This is a very interesting place. You are met with a putrid smell. It wasn't very inviting - they should really do something about this. Keep an eye on prices, most of their products are good fairly priced. It's not the cleanest place around - which is concerning for me messing around with all that raw meat. I appreciate that they cut and handle and wrap their own stuff - but not convinced of their handling practices. It wasn't clean and they used the same scale for weighing different cuts of meat. They didn't use a plastic or paper for the scale. Their ground beef and pork shoulder was what i was the most interested in. I'd come back but with a discerning eye. read more

I actually just called the business to check to see if they had a certain type of meats for my holiday dinners. I can't believe how rude the gentleman that picked up the phone was!! I asked if they had a certain type of meat by the case. He said I didn't know I then asked him if there was anyone else that was working that would be able to answer my question he screamed at me and told me that he has no idea no one is on the floor he doesn't have time for this. I then asked him if there was anyone else they could help me and if he wasn't there at work? And if he couldn't help me was there a time that I can call back? He continued to yell at me and then hung the phone up I live about 49 minutes away with no traffic so I was just checking to see if they had the items before I took the drive and apparently I won't be going there. If you are looking for a place where you can communicate with knowledgeable people, this isn't it. Most of the people who work here speak very little English. The ones who do don't seem to be interested in helping. I saw some sausages and wanted to ask about them. My question was simple..."What are these?" Answer - $5.99. Me - "Not 'how much'...what?" Answer - "per pound" Me - "Can you get someone else to help me?" New guy comes over. Me - "What kind of sausages are these?" "Pork" Me - "pork and what else?" "Vegetables" Me - "Thank you" I just took a chance and bought some sausage and some hamburger. And, yes, the place smells like bad chicken. So, I took the sausages and hamburger home and cooked them. The sausage was gristly. The ground beef, on the other hand, was excellent. So...I'll go back for the hamburger but trying anything new would be too difficult to communicate. read more

There are only a few places where I will buy meat. Let's face it, after reading about the Meat Industry and "Pink Slime" you need to be very careful. Now, there are two option left. Whole Foods or a local butcher. Whole Foods meat is great and they assure me it is great, but this great feeling comes at a great price. Yeah, I want to buy some nice filets, but for that price I could easily order it at a halfway decent restaurant. I have student loans, iPhone bills, and sports apparel to buy. I can't waste my money on meat! Absurd! This is where Rl Beef and Veal comes in. They have the quality meat products at prices I can afford. I'll take a break from work and head over. I drop $50.00 and walk away with a months worth of grillable goodness. 10 pounds of Chicken Filets for $20.00? Awesome. Grill some up and lunch for me & the wife is taken care of. Put it on salads, in sandwiches, in burritos, etc. Lunch is fun again. The beef is fresh. You can literally smell the cows as you walk in. Skirt steaks, filet mignon, flank steaks, and ground beef right before your eyes. The personalities behind the counter are great too. You can tell a lot about the product by the people selling it to you. The people at Rl Beef and Veal liek what they do. They know meat. This place has excellent meat, great prices friendly staff and always give us freebies. If you are not used to what a butcher shop looks like and smells like because you have only ever seen one through glass at a big chain store and never smelled what decomposing flesh(which IS what you are eating) looks and smells like you will run back to your big chain store and buy your bleached radiated meat. Death smell and looks like death. A butcher shop has dead meat and blood and your meat that is white washed and bleached at big chain stores comes from way grosser looking places. Luckily there are only a few reviews on here, and I"m not trying to insult anyone's comments, but this place needs to be shut down due to cleanliness. First off, they had many issues with the town of Johnston, i've personally been to a couple of the town council meetings and they have had massive problems with storing and refrigerating the "waste" of the animals properly. In addition, they have had issues with delivery of animals outside of business hours which, whatever... not that big of a deal, but the underlying matter is they don't do things the right way. Lastly, I actually looked at their website, prices, etc, and decided i needed to put all that shit behind me and check this place out. No offense to anyone who has been there, but you must be blind if you didn't see the amount of filth and unsanitary issues in this place. The scale for meat was covered in DRY blood... the f*ckers don't even use plastic sheets when weighing their cuts. They just throw it on, and let all of that blood and raw chicken juice marinate. Gross. The smell... lets just say, its bad. I get it, any place that butchers pigs, cows, and chicken, especially chicken, is going to have some sort of smell to it. This place smelled rotten. The kicker of this joke of an establishment, is that they were giving bags of chicken away with your order the day I walked in there. I believe they were giving away drumsticks. These drumsticks were in a large, thin, plastic garbage bag behind the meat cases. Out in the open, not refrigerated, nothing. Just a disgusting garbage bag full of raw chicken legs. God know what the surface temp of the chicken was, and god knows how much bacteria was on there. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble... but I am not exaggerating here. I'm not one of those hippie animal lovers who protest against butchers and slaughter houses... in fact, I encourage it because market prices are going through the god damn roof. But this place is disgusting, and i would NEVER buy one piece of meat from this piece of shit business. If they are dumb enough to keep bags of chicken out in the open, not properly refrigerated, and they have steaks touch the same thing as chicken (perfect when i love med rare steaks)... you think they give two shits if they cut a piece of steak with a knife that may have just butchered a chicken?
