I adopted my first feathered soul from RIPR in 2020 after starting to volunteer in 2019. The staff and volunteers are wonderful and always put the needs of the birds first. Owning a bird, like any other animal, is a commitment and the rescue does a great job of educating potential adopters on what it takes to be a parront. RIPR is a wonderful group. They accept birds from people who either don't want them or can no longer care for them no matter what shape the bird is in and rehab them by getting them on a healthy diet, working with them to make them more sociable, and getting medical care for them when needed. This is a daunting task. My avian vet speaks highly of their work and they deserve more credit than they get! read more

I never imagined myself possibly leaving a bad review for a rescue organization but 3 days after the fact I'm still brooding over what happened with the organization that got the boys from. It was a long process to bring the two cockatiels home. It was 4-5 hour there-and-back drives to pick up the boys and tons and tons of talk and information about taking care of them. I found their requirements to be pretty weird, but whatever, we prefer to adopt rather than to shop and we were already attached to the boys. So after we bring them home one of the staff at Lazicki's friends me on facebook and invites me to join a group of other 'parronts' from the same rescue. Since we brought the boys home I've talked to her at least once a week. I would ask advice, update her on how the boys were doing, send her pictures etc. We weren't 'friends' but we were friendly, I thought she was nice, and it was nice to have her within message's reach whenever I wanted to talk about Pip and Geoff. So about a week ago Pip and Geoff both decided to come out of their cage. This was a big moment because they only do this once they've become comfortable with their new home. I was sitting down there with them and I really didn't think anything of letting them walk around on the floor getting treats. They both walked over to my dog and I snapped a picture and posted it on facebook. (Again, totally not thinking anything of it.) Anyhow, a couple days ago I get an angry message from the supervisor person of the rescue. She "just happened" to see the picture of my dog with the birds and I ASSURED her that the dog would never be around the birds when they were out. Ok, I guess it's possible even if I don't remember that particular part of the conversation. I went home with A LOT of information, being a new bird parent. I told her that I don't remember saying that in particular, but if she felt it was best I'd keep them apart. But I did let her know that she didn't "just happen" to see that picture, which she attached at the end of her message. This person, btw, is not my friend on facebook. The image was set to private. I never had second thoughts about friending an employee from the rescue because I would never allow, let alone post about, any kind of activity that I felt would put my pets at risk. I wouldn't even be upset about a note from the person who saw the picture. If you feel like I'm doing something wrong, please let me know. I don't want to put my animals at risk or disrespect the wishes of the people who allowed me to adopt my pets. Instead of just talking to me directly over the picture of my dog, the employee/spy passed on my personal photo to the woman she works for. It is incredibly unnerving to have someone who does not have access to your facebook page send you back your private family photos. The facebook friend was someone who I had talked to on a regular basis and I was stunned to find that she couldn't just talk to me herself. She claimed that she was not 'allowed' to message me herself and could have been asked to leave the rescue. For one, when I pointed out to the supervisor didn't 'just happen' to see a private photo and that I would have preferred if the employee would have just messaged me herself, she said, "I must have just got to you first," implying that they were both going to talk to me about it. The supervisor also never would have known about the photo if employee hadn't sent it to her, so why would she get in trouble for messaging someone she regularly talks to about a photo that her boss should never have seen? My complaint comes down to this: I was being spied on. My family's privacy was invaded. I got an angry and condescending message from a stranger over something easily remedied and neither of the people from the rescue had any intention of being honest about how the supervisor saw the photo or why the employee was sending my private photos to the rescue rather than discussing things with me. In her last message, the supervisor told me not to be mad at facebook spy/employee because she was just "doing her job." There ya have it. Her job apparently involves spying. While I do believe that these people take good care of their birds and I obviously believe in their mission, I still can't get over the juvenile and dishonest behavior of their staff. If I had any idea what type of people were running it, I would have found another place to adopt. It's a shame, too. I still talk to the group I adopted my dog from and it's been great to have someone to ask for advice and share updates with, but there's zero chance of that happening with this group. Best advice: Adopt, don't shop, but don't adopt from here. read more

I really love this place the adoption was very good, they care very much about the birds they rescue, thorough about who they allow to adopt so the birds receive a forever home , I am very impressed with this organization I will recommend going here if you are thinking about adopting a parrot, I have had my Donan boy for 2 years and he was a blessing from them . Let me start by saying that I think the work that they do is noble and needed. These are complex animals and they try to give them a new life. The place is clean (very!!) and the animals are well cared for. THAT SAID, I have owned parrots for more than 25 years and when one of them died recently, I tried adopting from them. Over the course of 2 months, 7 on-site visits to 'bond' with the bird in question and over 1000 miles driven, things seemed to be going well and I was on target to have a home visit as one of the final steps. However, out of the blue, with absolutely NO warning, after 3 weeks of silence from them, I got a terse txt saying they had 'issues' with how I handled the bird (mind you, they only saw the first couple of visits. The manager wasn't there for the remainder and the executive director was never there nor did she communicate) and that they were rejecting my adoption. An email was sent requesting more information but that was promptly ignored. Their lack of professionalism was very disappointing. My point is that they did absolutely nothing to facilitate a successful adoption. I found the two women (the facility manager and the exec. director) running the place to be extremely self-righteous and sanctimonious as though their way was the only way. Fair enough I suppose, but to my mind, they could/should have exerted a micron of effort to guide a 'parent' in their way to conclude the adoption vs. passing judgement and disposing of the entire affair, leaving the bird to spend even more time in this foster home. It's not like they were particularly busy. On every visit day (every Sunday), I was the only 'parent' bonding with *any* of the birds. If this sounds like sour grapes, it is but it was my experience with them and if you should engage them in order to adopt one of these wonderful animals, just be aware of the BS you'll go through and be ready to have *your* heart broken if/when they reject you. UPDATE: 12/2016 - After the above debacle, I reached out to another parrot rescue organization and eventually, they alerted me to a situation in New Jersey where the elderly owner of a 19yo bird had died and the widow was going to 'drop him off at a pet shop'. We all coordinated and within a few days were able to get the bird and save it from that fate. That organization is fosterparrots.com and I'd definitely recommend them. read more

I adopted a bird here in 2015. The process was pretty straightforward, although it did involve an inspection of my home. After I got the bird, the online community gave me a lot of help with her care, and offered lots of emotional support. There is no doubt that this group has the best interest of the birds in mind. read more

I just went through the adoption process to get a beautiful Amazon named Kali. The staff were so friendly, knowledgeable, and they made my experience very rewarding. They take exceptional care of the birds and know how to match you with the right companion. I highly recommend going to RIPR if you're looking to give a loving home to a parrot that really needs it. read more

I volunteer at RIPR and would like to address some of the negative comments below. First off the adoption process HAS to be stringent! Many of these birds have come from deplorable conditions, some are struggling with the loss of their owners, along with a variety of other situations that wouldn't even fit here. They are very complex, sensitive, intelligent creatures, and are completely different than other "pets." We work countless hours to rehabilitate and socialize them. So yes, not every applicant is accepted. We watch the required bonding visits to see how the interactions go, and we do a home visit. Thousands of dollars are spent keeping them healthy and properly fed. If we see things we are not comfortable with, that bird is not leaving the rescue. We work too hard and love these birds far to much to take any chances on sending them into a situation where they may be unhappy or potentially in danger. That's not to say the applicant would mean to do these things, but having a parrot is a HUGE responsibility and you DO have to adjust your lifestyle to own one. No Teflon pans, candles, ceiling fans, adjusting to new environment, other animals, family members, out of cage time... I could go on. Personally I tried to adopt a Cockatoo and was rejected. And I work there!! They need someone who is around more than I am or they could physically harm themselves!! So no we do not demand that you quit your job, but different birds have different needs. I adopted a parrot that can cope with me working full time. We do not require that you have a garden, or any of the other ridiculous things listed below. We do teach you to feed them what they need to keep them healthy. And it's different than other pets! And we go over a lot of things because there is a lot to know. If you don't want to bother with learning and adhering to safety, behavioral, and health advice for owning a parrot, then you shouldn't own one, period. This is not like adopting a cat or dog, this is adopting a permanent toddler with very specific and unique needs, who will live a very long time in many cases. It's not for everyone and we make sure we explain that to everyone who comes through the door. I have personally seen what happens when someone adopts who didn't take these things seriously. The bird is returned and traumatized, and we have to start from square one again. Our job is to get these birds into the RIGHT home. And sometimes people who come in don't get what they want. But many many people do. They take their time and wait to bond with the bird who wants to be with them. The birds choose who they want to be with, and we make sure that person is the right person. Lastly, when you adopt you sign a contract. And if we see on social media you have broken that contract, yes we will say something. I know someone at a cat rescue who does the same. You think once they leave we just don't care anymore?? Wrong. We love them always. The Parronts page is not meant to spy on people, it's because we love these birds and always want to know how they are doing. When they are happy it fills our hearts with joy. It's also a place to get advice from other Parronts. But if you post yourself doing something inherently dangerous with your bird yes we are going to address it. Come spend a week at the rescue and see how much blood sweat and tears are poured into it by everyone who works/volunteers there, and maybe you will have a better understanding of why we take this so very seriously. read more

This place is amazing. They take in and rehome parrots that were given up by their previous owners. They rehabilitate them when needed and then adopt them. The people dedicate their lives to these beautiful, sensitive and highly intelligent creatures. They always need help and donations. If you visit please do not arrive empty handed. When I visit them i always bring something-check the wish list. Even paper towels, vinegar or spring water is helpful. read more

This is a response to the two reviewees who had unpleasant personal experiences with this rescue. I have volunteered at several rescues and do grant writing for sanctuaries. Unfortunately, "people skills" i.e.tact, patience, consideration et al., are not always universal. People who work with animals out of compassion often do not have as much as would be preferable, I know because i and other volunteer acquaintances have often experienced this. I try to keep in mind that, after all, it's all about the birds; their happiness, their well-being. There are so many birds in need, and too few people who even care or try to help them. It is a huge responsibility to take them in. Enjoy your adoptees and try to forget the unpleasantness you experienced. You sound like great "parronts"! read more
