The RISPCA is a wonderful shelter that truly cares about the dogs and their potential adopters. They want to make sure it is a successful adoption and provide all the tools you need. I adopted Mischa almost two years ago after my sweet senior died suddenly. I was originally interested in another dog but we put it off because we decided to remodel our bathroom and wanted to make sure our new pup could have time to decompress without stress. A few months when it was completed we reached out again and the dogs we were interested in had a daughter that was being fostered at that time. We met her and fell in love (even though she lunged and barked and was trying to be scary) after she gave me her little paw. Rihanna is a shelter worker there and is dedicated to helping rehome these animals. I honestly can't say enough about them. The review that says shelter is dirty and dogs euthanized rather than adopted out are liars. It's very clean, animals are well cared for and are adopted out to the right fit so they are not returned. read more

Their new facility is immaculate. Clean, individual spaces for the animals, with the kindest most caring staff and volunteers. As a former foster mom for them, and adopter through them, they helped from beginning to end and beyond. Their medical staff and vet techs are phenomenal, and we still travel just to see them. Having adopted a cat that needs ongoing medical attention, they help find the most effective and reasonably priced solutions for us. I've never adopted from here, but I have fostered some kittens here and the staff that I dealt with were all great. I mostly interacted with Lisa who is the foster coordinator and she was always very quick to respond to any inquiries I had at any time of the day. RISPCA provided me with all the supplies including litter and food needed to care for the kittens I was fostering. The place itself also looks clean. I especially like the little room they have near the main entrance for some cats to roam around. You can see the cats through the glass. I can't speak on the adoption process as I've never adopted from here before so this review is just based on my fostering experience alone. read more

I adopted my two kittens here at two separate times and they have been very organized throughout my adoption process. Every single person I interacted with at this place were very welcoming and receptive towards my concerns as a prospective cat owner. My kittens have been great since I adopted and they have been great with keeping me updated on their needed vaccines post-adoption. When I adopted, they also provided me with coupons to local businesses as a new cat parent which shouldered a significant portion of the cost of buying cat-related necessities (e.g., cat towers, cat scratcher posts, cat litter, etc...). I arrived at the location on-time 10 AM, they were a bit delayed in opening the cat section, so I waited few mins until they had the whole place cleaned up. The wait was worth it since the cat facility was very clean and the cats were very content in their little cages. They had their dry and wet food, water, blanket, and litter. I will recommend this place to anything who wants to adopt a cat :D read more

We really had a great experience with RI SPCA. We adopted what we should have called,Hellboy, Roman from them a few months ago now. He was in a cage for 9 months of his life and when we got him he was 9-1/2 months. But he's a wonderful dog now, not perfect but who is. My Ruby died April 2,2021. We had been looking at the adopt a pet, and petfinder which turned out to be a horrendous bunch to deal with.All done on the phone. I sent out 10 apps or more, and saw,met only 1 dog. They are surely not interested in adopting dogs, just having the 501c3 status is all they want.Money money money!! Their applications are uttely ridiculous. for instance, if you should separate from your spouse have you plans in place who gets the dog/cat? Seriously? We got a free collar and leash from UpCountry inc. They are beautiful! We are thankful for them and the SPCA. read more

My beloved cat Marshy passed away suddenly and I was scrambling to find a place to cremate him that wouldn't cost $180 like most places. I called here as a last resort and I'm so glad I did. Not only were the staff super friendly and supportive but they took paw prints of my cat, and let me pick the urn at no extra cost. I was a wreck over losing my fur baby but I knew that he was in good hands when I passed him over to get cremated. Very kind words and actions from this place. If you ever lose your pet at least bringing them here gives just a tiny bit of piece of mind knowing someone actually cares and not just doing it for the money. Highly, highly recommend. read more

This is a case of love what they do but dislike who does it. Have visited multiple times and each time I feel I was met with hostility and impatience. I donate to SPCA's all through New England and will not give this place a dime until I can walk in and be treated with respect and dignity. During one of my visits, I even inquired about volunteer opportunities. The clerk at the front desk could not be bothered to give me any details. I adopted two animals in the past. A beautiful dog and I still have my cat. My dog died of old age and I was searching to adopt. the volunteer was absolutely wonderful. I filled out an application and obviously, and so rude,, I was denied. The person who looked at my application is stand-offish and rude. She was curt with me with a bad attitude. I will never go back. I do not have a fence but I walked my dog five times a day. So, I guess you want to euthanize a dog before giving a chance to live. I have a will that if I pass away most of my money would go to the SPCa. That is what I wanted. Not any more. It is shame that I am complaining about the help and not the dogs. I would love to give this shelter 5 stars but I cannot because they are extremely rude and judgemental. I put in to adopt a medium size lab that was clearly abused, he was very underweight, and had not been socialized. Whom ever had him before was a terrible owner and treated this dog like crap. I put the application in on a Saturday. I was told someone would go over my application and I would be given a call either way. I called a week later after hearing nothing. I was told that the dog had already been adopted. When I asked why I wasn't informed the woman on the phone told me that I must not have been suitable for the dog. I was miffed! I am 100% suitable to raise an abused dog, My parents ran a freaking dog shelter for crying out loud! I had no other pets, I lived in a great neighborhood with yards... I was the perfect person for this dog and I fell madly in love with him when I first met him. Fine.. I dealt with it. Went in again and fell in love with a little poodle mix, put an application in.. same thing happened. This time my mom called up and wanted to know why... the person on the phone told my mother that they take the first application they find that meets their needs and they didn't even go over my application. I was so hurt, All I wanted to was to rescue a dog and take great care of him/her. Unfortunately I won't go here again, I have found other shelters in RI that are far more organized and pay attention to the animals needs. ALSO, the cat room.... there was a very sick cat, he was having issues breathing, foaming at the mouth, eyes are gunked up.. you could totally tell that the cat was in incredible pain. I told the woman at the desk and she said oh, he just has congestion. No that cat was very ill and needed attention. The people at this place do not take care of the animals from what I can tell. I am sure that they have great credentials and have a lot of success stories and do truly help a great deal of animals, but I was treated like crap and disappointed one too many times. If you google animal shelters in RI there are plenty of kill shelters that are really great at finding placements so animals are not euthanized. read more

My family and I went adopted a dog from there recently. We are very happy with how everything went. The employees and volunteers were very nice and care so much for every animal in there. The only complaint would be the kennels are alittle small for some of these dogs. I wish I could take them all home. Also what was stated in the dogs bio. Wasn't accurate.....hes been around other dogs and cats a few times now and loves them. So i guess dont always go by their bio. When deciding if their a good fit for your family! To be honest we had no intention of adopting a pet when we decided to stop by. We wanted to go && help out by playing with/walking some dogs. They have a new policy that you have to submit an application/have it approved to even see a pup outside the cage. I understand why this policy was created but it is still disappointing. The conditions for these animals are as best they could be given the limited space available. The biographies for each dog/cat are a great idea. They even try to promote the more "taboo" breeds so they have a chance. The woman working (even after knowing we wouldn't adopt that day) continued to tell us a stories about each animal. She seemed to really care about them. I really wish that they would let pet lovers come in && volunteer to help with the animals. I realize that there are a lot of psychos out there but I'm sure they could use the help. Even if it required an interview with the potential helper. read more

The visit to the RISPCA was not an easy one. I had to bring our family buddy, Orange Cat Olsen, to his final resting place. Everyone was kind, despite my never ending tears. They made my short trip very easy and were very professional. When I checked my mail a few days later, I received a card with OC's paw print to give to my daughter as a keepsake of her 18 year old buddy. Was looking to adopt last year and visited them on a whim one day. The place is very clean and they have a large selection of animals to adopt. However, after falling in love with one of the animals they had I was super excited to fill out an application. After filling it out I spoke with the receptionist who told me it's not first come first serve, which is more than fine with me! I was concerned on being chosen though since I had just finished my undergrad degree and am a bit young (23). I asked her what I could do to prove I cared for this dog already. She gave me no answers. I called he trainer, offered home visits and vet references, and visited every day for two weeks. I was told again and again the dog was not ready to be adopted and on my last visit they told me they already found someone. It was just really disappointing they weren't even willing to work with a potential adopter. read more

I visit this shelter quite often because I live close by and I like to go visit the cats, dogs and small animals. The animals are great, its the staff that needs work. Upon entering I have never been greeted with a "hello" or "how are you today". I find the workers to be very cold and non social, which when going to a shelter wouldn't the staff want to be warm and welcoming to encourage adopters??? I would much rather visit PARL where the staff always greets me with a smile and a hello. read more

I had wonderful experiences adopting a dog and a cat from the RISPCA. When I went in to adopt my cat in 2006 they were helpful, but because we were pretty open we did not need much help...or so we thought! The initial cat we adopted was my mom's favorite, but did not quite fit in our home. We returned the cat and asked to adopt the one that had initially caught my eye. Perhaps it was because they see similar situations all the time or because the cat we returned was still a kitten and the cat we wanted to adopt was a senior tuxedo cat, they were more than accommodating and actually encouraged us to do what was best for our family. We essentially exchanged cats which a lot of organizations would frown upon or make us feel badly about--not the RISPCA. In the end it worked out beautifully, ten years later our beautiful cat is still going strong at 16! The best experience we had is when we adopted our amazing dog Bailey. My mom and I went to the shelter every Wednesday for a month or so looking for the right dog in 2004. We visited various shelters around the state, but none of them were as HELPFUL and HONEST about their dogs as the RISPCA. When my mom fell in love with a Rottweiler puppy they were honest about his early onset hip-dysplasia and the costly vet bills associated. They offered to help with some of the bills, but at the time we thought it would be too difficult financially for us and logistically (we have a lot of stairs in our home) for the little guy. A staff volunteer--I believe her name was Katrina--really LISTENED to why we were interested in the rottie puppy, and asked if we would be interested in an older dog they had out back in the outdoor kennels. It was truly love at first sight for me as far as it comes to dogs, but my mom was skeptical. Katrina was UPFRONT about Bailey's separation anxiety, about his habit of jumping on people to greet them and that he was not good with other dogs. She offered me the chance to come in and volunteer for a few hours so I could take him for walks and see if I could handle a dog his size (60lbs at the time). The truly amazing part was when the day came to pick up Bailey I went to the shelter with my dad, who upon seeing the size and breed of dog for the first time was totally against adopting him in the most passive-aggressive way possible (we thought the adoption fee was $40, instead it was $60 and he refused to give me the other $20). From my personal experience I know a lot of volunteer/staff at animal rescues would have seen my dad's attitude as a red flag or maybe would have thought we just did not have the money to care for the dog. Once again the RISPCA was awesome and worked with us (me). Bailey immediately became a "Marvin's Friend" dog and his adoption fee was reduced to $40. This speaks volumes to the organization because they did not rush to judgment, assessed the situation and made the right call. He went home with me that day. We had him for over 10 years and he was a treasured member of the family. I am really sorry to see so many negative reviews about the RISPCA. I know volunteers and staff can become jaded. To the public it comes off as cold and judgmental, but I think its a protective mechanism because they see so many tough situations and terrible owners. I suggest visiting often, talking to volunteers and staff and not just expecting them to bend over backwards because you think you are doing them a favor by adopting from them. read more

I understand and respect their "best fit not first come-first served" policy. However, I went yesterday to see a dog that my husband and I were interested in adopting. While we there, there was a phone call about the same dog. Imagine my surprise when I heard her tell the caller "Well, if you know So-and-so that will definitely give you an edge. Send your application and I'll go tell the trainer to be on the lookout for it." And today the dog is gone from the website, after we were told just yesterday he hadn't been evaluated yet. We went their and looked at a dog to adopt, since we had a great experience the first time we adopted at ANOTHER shelter. This place has the Worst communication ever. Went on a Saturday filled out an application for 3 dogs (2 were to be adopted together). Followed up a few days later, told to contact the trainer, we did. Days later found out the dogs had been adopted, okay fine. One of dogs we had put an application for had just gotten their the day before we completed an application. Again, no follow up, the dog had already been adopted out. Apparently you have to put in a separate application for each dog you are looking to adopt. They do not contact you if you haven't been selected. They either just take him down off the website or you have to call them to find out. And the women answering the phone is RUDE!!!!! I can't believe she works for a animal shelter. My experience with them even though my contact with the trainer was diligent, was awful and turned me off of the adoption process. I've had several great experiences here and this Saturday was no exception. They take great care to match you with an animal who will be right for you. The dog adoption process was simple. I filled out an application and sent it to the trainer, specifying the name of the dog I was interested in. She determined that we might be a good match, so she called me to set up a meet and greet with anyone who might come in contact with the dog. I brought in my parents and their dogs because they live next door and I wanted all people involved to be happy. The trainer came out with the dog and met the people first. After that, they took the dog on a walk with my parents dog to make sure they were compatible. Everyone got along great, so we went back inside to the meet and greet room to spend more time with the dog. After all parties were satisfied, I was able to adopt my new dog friend and take him home. I would advise everyone looking into adopting a dog to be patient. The timing has to add up - other people who are a match for the dog may meet him before you do. It's nothing personal. The workers here always have the animal's best interests at heart. That's what makes it such a great place. read more

When I adopted a kitten there was no issues until the kitten came home. When I brought the kitten home he started itching from fleas and had blood in stool. Then when bringing the sick kitten back I was given attitude and judged. I never felt like such a jerk in my life and when adopting I felt like I was scammed and lied to. Bizzare experience. I came into this shelter looking for a companion cat for my remaining cat after his sibling died. I walk in, speak to the front desk lady, and she points to a room where the cats supposedly are. I walk into the room, there are a bunch of people crowded at the entrance, just staring at me. No "hello," no "how can I help you," etc. I smile at them, anyway, and start looking at the cats. Maybe it's because I used to volunteer at a animal shelter myself, but I start playing with a couple of cats through the cages. One volunteer hovers over me while I am playing with this cat. The cat gets his nail caught on the cage and is upset (obviously). Naturally, I reach over to assist the cat. The volunteer reaches out in front of me and basically yells "Okay, you're done!" I explain to him that the animal is caught and I was trying to assist. "Oh...next time, get a volunteer!" He says, and walks away. Distraught over the loss of my cat and having all these cute kitties in front of me, I ignore these remarks and decide to keep looking. I play and coo other kitties through the cages. The same male volunteer stomps over and yells that I am supposed to look at the list on the door to see which cats I am allowed to interact with. The list is alllll the way at the end of the hallway, after you pass all the cat cages. Gee, maybe they should have told me this when I walked in?! When I peek at the list, there are hardly any names on the list. So 90 percent of the cats in the cages I can't interact with??? SO, SO odd! Mind you, I am extremely nice despite the behavior of the volunteer, somewhat due to my own grief over the loss of my cat, and somewhat due to disbelief! I ask a different volunteer if we can open a cage so I can get to know a cat better. She says I have to fill out an application first. Uh, what? I have to fill out an application to play with a cat? ....Before I even have a chance to understand fully if I want to adopt an animal? Okay....so I go fill out an application. The front desk lady says that they will call me in 2 weeks max because it takes time to review the applications. Fast forward 2 MONTHS later....I never received a call! This application wasn't even to adopt....it was to meet a cat outside of the cage! What the heck?! How do they operate this way?! It's okay, though, because I ended up finding the perfect kitty. I adopted from a shelter with nice volunteers that allow you to spend quality time with your potential kitty before filling out an application....and they respond within a reasonable amount of time! I adopted from PET REFUGE in North Kingstown, RI! I just feel bad for the poor cats at this RISPCA shelter! read more

This is my first Yelp review and was so unhappy I had to do one. I have been here twice once today and once in the spring and have not had a good experience either time! The front desk lady (blonde baggy sweatshirt) is rude and cold I can't believe she works at an animal shelter! I went in looking for a kitten knowing it must be a long shot with Christmas coming up she said they have none I said do you know anywhere that does to which she blankly stared at me and said idk you have to ask places! You would think a place like the RISPCA would have contacts and could help me out. Back in the spring I came in looking for a kitten after my cat of 14 years snuck out of the house and was killed by a coyote. I tell this same woman and Instead of an I'm so sorry all I got was a scruff like well it's your fault he got out.
