Be the cheese to my papusa! Finally tried the El Salvadorian food papusas at Ricas Papusas & Mas. The papusas were pretty good and crunchy. They kind of had a nice tortilla crunch to it. I also liked how the food came with a side of raw beets. The sauces they provided also weren't too spicy and just the right amount of spice. However, the tamale I tried didn't have much flavor to it was kind of dry and flavorless. The flan also wasn't really sweet. It had more of a bitter cough syrup taste to it, I had much better flans before. The food also did kind of take long to come, it was around a 15 minute wait. But it could be because it was only two people running it. This place wasn't crowded at all and had a very simplistic aesthetic to it. Thank God for another pupusa place in Queens so I've been to a one other one called salavatoria but I won't compare I absolutely had a blast and this place was so so good as well I got 3 mixed pupusas and it was so juicy and and so flavorful. It's so hard to find any pupusa places in new York cause pupusas aren't really known much but the fact that I'm lucky enough to have tasted two good quality pupusas places. Makes me happy and honestly the atmosphere was great ricas pupusas seemed to be a like a small business and I'm so glad I had the experience. I definitely need to come back and try everything else cause the mixed pupusas were amazing and i don't know what tomato sauce they used it was so so good I highly recommend. Definitely my go to place to go before I hit up jar bar! The woman is so damn nice that helped us. One of my friends didnt understand how to eat the one so she explained it. Papusas are the bomb and can't believe I've only been eating them 6 years. I really missed out on some good eats. The bean and cheese is my favorite one! I do like just the cheese too. I love the wide variety of fillings--whether it's chicharron, chorizo, cheese, or something lighter like loroco, squash, and jalapeño. You can pick up to 1 meat and 3 other fillings per pupusa. Amazing hole in the wall spot. We came in after a long drive and made our own pupusas. I personally had a cheese and bean and a chorizo cheese and jalapeño one. They were both amazing. The cheese is a nice crispy layer allowing you to also taste the other flavors. I liked how thin and small, but still filling these were. Additionally, the beans are amazing and I wish I had gotten more. They have a dark red and an orange hot sauce. The dark red is spicier with the orange being thinner and lighter. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile as I live around the area and pass by it so many times. I tried it and I must say it was pretty good. I had no idea that pupusas are Salvadoran and Mexican food. Never tried Salvadoran food before so I didn't know what to expect. I asked what was the most popular dish at this place and the person at the front said the pork with cheese and beans. She said that each pupusa should have either cheese or beans in it. I chose different ones and all were pretty good and tasty. It was ready in 15 minutes, gave me some sauce and some purple coleslaw on the side for takeout. Randomly came across Ricas Pupusas & Mas wandering around Sunnyside. We actually thought the pupusas would make for an ideal quick snack, but they took some time to come out so I wouldn't recommend that plan. Luckily they were worth the wait!  The dining area was tastefully decorated, and the women who were working were especially nice. There was a 3 pupusa minimum, so you're looking at spending around $12 for the corn flour pupusas. Rice flour is a slightly more expensive alternative. I appreciated how at the counter there was a diagram depicting the size of the pupusa. You can customize your pupusas too, up to 4 ingredients though 3 is advised. An employee helpfully recommended two popular options which were built upon chicharron and chorizo as meat choices. Cheese was included because cheese. We enjoyed our pupusas. Nothing like eating them right out of the kitchen. The chorizo definitely had some kick to it. A cabbage slaw called curtido also came with the pupusas. The Ricas website has this description: "Cultured Salvadoran fermented cabbage slaw (similar to sauerkraut) with carrots, cucumbers and oregano. Traditionally served with Pupusas." I liked it a lot and ended up simply eating it by itself, like coleslaw.  I'd be up for going again and coming up with some different pupusa combinations! read more

Delicious pupusas that dare I say taste healthy? My order was fresh and delicious and not greasy like this fried stuffed dish could be and often is. Perhaps because I didn't order one with meat, so maybe that sways the assessment. But either way, my cheese-bean-squash-loroco order was fantastic and so filling! I could not get through an single order of 3 myself. I also ordered a large horchata and it came in a giant mug for dining in. Holy cinnamon! The horchata was one of the better ones I've tasted, and I have traveled to many a spot in the city to find the right recipe. Another pupusa eatery in Woodside, another win. Queens deserves many more pupusa options because there just aren't enough of them. Ricas has burst onto the scene to much deserved fanfare and folks are coming in by the dozen. Tasty food certainly has no limits. Let's start with the obvious: these pupusas are excellent. They are worthy from all the hype that has been generated via the NYT article. While they have a myriad of stuffing options, my favorite is probably their most popular: the mixed (revuelta), which consists of beans, cheese, and chicharron. All of them are $3 each. While the pupusas are fantastic, where I have docked a star is with their variety of Mexican fare. The tacos I've experienced were not all that great. I felt that my asada, carnitas tacos were a bit on the small side and definitely lacking in flavor. The same boats for their quesadillas, which certainly feel secondary next to their pupusas. I know it doesn't feel right to rate a Salvadorean joint based on it's Mexican food, but seeing as it's such a prominent part of their menu I had to see what it was all about. In addition to the pupusas, a significant part of Salvadorian cuisine includes tamales. The wet and soggy version that I ordered is not anything new to me but this one was somewhat more bland than when I was used to. Stuffed with a decent bit of meat, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of sauce I could use to give it more flavor. All in all I have every reason to recommend this place. Great spot to fill you Pupusa and Tamale craving. You can create your own pupusa combo (up to 4 ingredients). We went on a Saturday in August and it was open starting at noon. They have shaded outdoor seating. We got a carrot juice (4/5), mango tango smoothie (4/5), 3 veggie pupusas 4.5/5) and a corn tamale (5/5). Wow that tamale was perfect I could definitely go back and eat more. The pupusas were fresh, my favorite was a spinach mushroom cheese combo. Not many places in NYC proper where you can get great attentive service, a full on great meal for two with soft drinks for $20 bucks! Super cute spot and I believe family owned so let's get out there and support small local family businesses people! Four nice size pupusas filled with a variety of yummy things things mushrooms, cheese, chicken, chicharron, and beans all grilled to a nice crisp on the exterior and soft center hit the spot on this rainy day. Their tamales are not to to be missed either! Masa is nicely seasoned with an abundant amount of moist chicken inside. An xlarge Horchata to wash it all down with hit the spot, very different from Mexican horchata but still delicious in its own right. A very tasty meal. I had a chicken and pork pupusas, which were good if a little bland. The accompanying sauce tasted more vinegary then spicy. The chicken tamale was my favorite. It had very good flavor and the right amount of sauciness. Again, a spicy sauce would have been appreciated. If you can eat in because the food is meant to be eaten hot. Five star pupusa filled with beans and pork; I'm lactose intolerant so didn't order the New York Times lauded cheese filled version. Perfect with the tomato sauce. It was my first time having them so I don't know how it compares to other places, but they are pretty large in size (about the size of an aluminum container). They are $3 each with your choice of three fillings. They make it fresh when you order so it takes 10-20 minutes for the order to be ready. I had mine with chicharron with cheese and beans, and chicken with cheese and mushrooms. Two was enough to fill me up for lunch. They are like stuffed arepas. It was pretty good. It comes with a cabbage slaw and tomato type sauce. The pupusas taste great dipped into the sauce. I preferred the pork one over the chicken. I never knew this place existed! Its like a hole in the wall type of place. I decided to try their restaurant week lunch menu which was a drink, 2 pupusas and a dessert for $12.50. Great thing is you have a choice of rice or corn flour. I ordered a drink called the Jamaica which is a cold hibiscus tea. I had the chicken and spicy chorizo both with cheese pupusa made with rice flour. It came with Cole slaw and a mild and spicy hot sauces. They were delicious and filling! I seen this restaurant open for a few months, price for a pupusa is $3, trust me that is expensive. I walked in for lunch in sat 4/13, as i happened to be around the same area where i go get a haircut. I placed my order at the counter, waited about 15 minutes. By the way this is one of those places which does not make chicharrón pupusas. I asked if they could do only chicharrón and the lady at the counter said they can make revueltas only (meaning they mix the cheese and pork together) Ok, i went with it. I also ordered some ice cold orchata. $9 later i got 2 pupusas and a small orchata. Pricey lunch, the pupusas had more cheese and not enough pork, the curtido had a nice crunch but not a lot of taste. Could have benefited from some oregano, salt and pepper. The sauce was slighty hearty but not awesome. If i consider the fact that this is the most expensive pupusas i ever had in Queens, given the price, i cannot quantify paying this much for what would be a average meal. I've had better pupusas for less. Will not be coming back, as i can go somewhere and eat for less. read more

I tried a pupusa for the very first time today. They're like arepas but I very much appreciated the slightly crisp outside and the less bread-like texture. I got the chicharron mixed with cheese and beans and I would highly recommend that! It was a perfect ratio and very flavorful. I loved it with the spicy sauce they give you as well. I also tried the chicken tamale which was good but I do think the pupusa is the real star. Both are very reasonably price at $3. My only qualm would be the pickled slaw which was way too salty (I love slaw but this was too much salt so I could not eat it). Tip: they seem to make to order so I waited 5-10mins there for my to go order. If ordering takeout, I would call in advance. But the pro is that it's hot and fresh when eaten! read more
