As a second generation salvadoran american, I am a very strong supporter of both local businesses and salvadorean businesses in general. Today, I had a very strong craving for pupusas today and even convinced my puerto rican husband to order some with me. HUGE MISTAKE. As I was taking a bite out of my mixed pupusa, i noticed a large black something inside. I picked it out with my fingers because i thought it could have been a frijol and it was a huge fly!!! As a common item in Central America and Mexico, El Comal is widely known as the cast iron griddle pan for pupusas, tortillas, etc. Here in Jamaica, Queens, El Comal is one of the better Salvadorean establishments in all of NYC. It has the kind of simple, homey vibe that would be a hit in any neighborhood. As a pupuseria, their staple is pupusas and they do a fantastic job at it. When it's fresh, the pupusas are perfectly crispy on the outside with ample filling on the inside. I personally loved the mixed combo, which comes stuffed with cheese, beans and meat. The latter is mainly pork and the chicharron is the one to get. This is also a popular breakfast spot. Their central american plate (el centroamericano) is an ideal platter with two eggs, big plantains with beans and a dollop of crema. I also highly recommend springing for a tamale, especially the one with sweet corn and crema. Otherwise, its savory cousin has chicken and pork options for added indulgence. And of course, their menu is loaded with a number of other regional latin-centric foods (Colombian, Mexican, Dominican) that is clearly to cater to the NYC-demographic, but I feel their Salvadorean specialties are the better option. The interior is not spacious, but there are enough tables in here for a decent group of 4 or less. Service was a mixed bag in the past, but I think they've been pretty decent as of late. When in the area and especially during the daytime, this is a fabulous place to have a meal. read more

Great food! Excellent take out option! This is my go to pupuseria. The mixed pupusas with pork, beans, and cheese are my favorite! I typically order to pick up and my pupusas are warm and fresh when I get home. They pair so well with their tomato sauce and are just as tasty when reheated as leftovers. I will say, customer service could be improved. I've been here a few times to pick up my food and have repeatedly gone a couple minutes before being acknowledged. I'm not sure what table service is like, but they could be better about being attentive and greeting all customers who come in with courtesy. read more

Extremely dissapointed as last friday i made a run for lunch to my favorite Salvadorian eatery. I have noticed since a month ago that the quality of their pupusas has changed and not for the better. I will start by telling you that the chicharron pupusas have gone down the tubes. For one the masa utilized to make the pupusas has less fat, the thickness of the pupusas is thick, almost making it like a tortilla. The chicharron itself did not taste like pork, overall when i had a bite of my meal, the pupusas was tough, dry, very little pork taste. I will assume that the person making the pupusas has left the building..right along with Elvis..lol The cheese pupusa actually tasted better for tue mere reason that even if the masa has a lesser ratio of fat, the cheese still make the masa moist because it melt. Thus releasing a little bit of fat throughout. A month ago, i came in to have dinner and i could see that things in general were not the same. Service on a busy friday night at 730pm was horrible, slow and very disorganized. So after that i decided to just have take out. Now even the take out has been affected because i also order the stuff green pepper with rice and beans and they forgot to provide me with tomato sauce for my green peppers. The beans were refried instead of whole black beans. I regret to say that el comal will R.I.P. As i niw will beging another journey to find tge perfect pupusa in queens.. This is my go to pupuseria. Amazing, homemade pupusas. Always fresh and tasty. The women are super friendly. Great service , clean environment, and even has authentic Hispanic sodas and other drinks. Definitely going back because this is my go to for take out night. You can even call beforehand and place your order, which is so convenient. read more

After 2 visits to Tierras Centro Americanas convinced me that getting to Jamaica isn't a big deal, thought I'd compare the excellent beef soup there with the one at El Comal. Found the broth a bit sour tasting. The beef was ok, but not nearly as tender as at Tierras. As for the pork and refried beans pupusa, again a bit sour for my taste. Filling was a a bit mushy. So, not a destination for me in the future, but if I was in the nabe it would be just fine. Would try the roast chicken or steak maybe. Oh, impressively clean and the server was sweet and spoke perfect English. read more

Cheap and delicious pupusas. We had the mixed, cheese, chorizos and cheese with vegetables. It is hard to choose which one was our favorite since all of them were delicious. We also had the beef with vegetable soup and tamales. They were delicious too. The staffs were friendly and gave us a prompt services. The pupusas took a while to cook, but you know it is freshly made. It was worth to wait 10-15 mins for it. We recommend this restaurant. read more

I know a lot of people have complained about their customer service and their serving time being slow, however, I must say they have decent timing compared to other similar restaurants. 3.5 stars. Ordered pupusas to go. We ordered cheese, beans, chicharron and mixed? When we entered the place, one half is table service and the other is their take out. I would not have known they even had pupusas if I had not read Yelp reviews while standing around their take out side. I guess most people dine in for them so I told L to get a menu since he speaks Spanish. Pupusas are made from scratch so they will always take around 20 mins. I know everyone complains about the wait time but it's not something they can control unless you want them pre-made. Then we'd be reading complaints about how dry they were...we sat around waiting, it was much busier on the take out side on a weekday. We brought them home to eat and 4 is really quite filling even for 2 people to share. It came with the exact amount of sauce I needed. They put the slaws and salsas in separate bags which is how they do it in South America. Other countries bag their foods also. The cheese pupusa was pretty good but I really couldn't tell which one was the chicharron one or the other flavors apart. So overall it was good, but not great. I prefer the other place I've been to that has spinach pupusas. I think I'll just return to that restaurant since I prefer more variety... read more

The wait time was rediculus. And I saw the chef give me old pupusas from somebodys plate. People when you eat in and cant finish your food ask for a doggy bag to take it home or destroy the food so that they wont be able to resell it again. read more

Best Ever... We went there for Lunch... must try the pupusas de chicharon, revueltas, de queso. Tamales de elote are excellent with crema. You get to taste the sweet corn with the Salvadorian style creama, wow delicious.had the rellenos de pacalla with tomato sauce, black beans and rice and that rock for a lunch special. My wife happens to like the chicharron the pollo (with bone) so tasty and the chicken is so crunchy. The beef soup is very good... Totally delicious... Highly Recommend.... i went on a mini pupusa run today trying to find my favorite pupusa (i really only get revueltas). el comal in jamaica was probably the best pupusa i've had in the nyc area, crispy skin and good flavor inside with a good amount of filling. the curtido was good with no weird flavors, slightly on sour side. they make their pupusas fresh and it took a while to get mine (at least 15 min). one side of the restaurant is prepared hot foods. other side is seating area and full menu. 2nd best is probably el pugarcita de america in east new york. they had a nice spicy curtido, a little more fermented, and they were the biggest pupusa i've had. right under the "brown" subway line stop so it's convenient. once you hear the tracks rumbling, pay and book it up the stairs to catch the train. next might be el salvador restaurant in bushwick. the flavor was a little more bland than the others but usually the curtido helps with that. this place probably best curtido of the bunch, fresh tasting and you can get the spicy green sauce too. there was a weird drunkish man at the counter who blurted stuff in a language i didn't understand which made me want to leave fast. and when i left, 3 guys had someone pinned on the sidewalk with his pants half off just a couple blocks down. other pupuseria i'd probably not go back to: rincon salvadoreno in jamaica: maybe the cheese they use is the strange/pungent taste i didn't like. not that it should matter, but their pupusa looked a little sloppy. el continental in park slope: they put some weird oregano in their curtido and the skin is too hard. last time i went i found it very unmemorable which sparked me to try to find the best pupusa. el nuevo izalco in woodside: pupusa wasn't particularly memorable but they use light purple cabbage. the filling to skin ratio is low so not much flavor and basically eating a lot of skin. jollibee filipino fast food is a couple blocks down--probably a funner place to go! bahia in w'burg: i don't think they had revueltas when i went. i don't remember why i didn't like it, maybe it was too hard but never bothered trying it again. salvadoreno usuluteco in sunset park: just wasn't right. haven't bothered trying to figure out why. red hook ball fields: i went to two trucks. i was hoping this would be the golden pupusa cuz everyone raves about it. i think it's more for the experience. i wasn't impressed at all with either truck. maybe cuz it's hard to get the soft gooey texture i like when cooking out of a truck. both trucks served dark purple curtido. some place in the w170s: i think there's a couple up that way. i brought my pupusa newbie friend and he brought extra home. i feel like i cheated him cuz there's def much better pupusa out there. a guy wrote up his pupusa trip thru jamaica: http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-02-18/restaurants/central-american-masa-pancakes-rule-at-dona-mari-el-comal-and-many-more/ i'm not sure how salvadoran people feel, but i have issues getting pupusa at a pan-latin america place. to me it's like going to a restaurant that serves pad thai and sushi.
