Chinese and sushi! Love it!! Love sitting in the sushi bar with the colors and lighting!! The other best spot is by the koi pond or at the long table on the other side of the koi pond lol There is a sushi roll that has salmon pesto and an olive and it's bomb! Fun flavors and really enjoyed it! There are some other great rolls too! The spicy salmon was simple yet yummy! Mom usually gets vegetable chow mein with crispy noodles it's loaded with veggies! We love the bento boxes! The mu shu pork is amazing and enough for a few meals!! Get extra wraps! The dumplings seem to be homemade which is a bonus! Service is usually great! We went in and were in a hurry and of course the service was a little slow but I think there were only two servers and they did a great job considering how many patrons there were!! The last time we were in the sushi chefs must have been in a bad mood the didn't say hi or acknowledge me when I went to the bar to check the freshness of the fish!! I'm in my sixties now and i've been going to the Rice Bowl since high school. I love their new Sushi room. It's fun to eat sushi in the tatami rooms. A real Japanese meal at a local Chinese restaurant. Lots of delicious choices of both Chinese and Japanese food. This is my go to place to suggest to new people. read more

Amazing how much my review of this business has changed since my original post four years ago.... Overpriced and expect to wait 30 minutes longer than your estimated pick up time. There are many other fantastic establishments in Chico and while the food at Rice Bowl is not bad they unfortunately have gotten multiple orders wrong and again the wait time is pretty rough when you get to sit in their lobby for additional 30 minutes. It's too bad. They could be so much better. read more

I chose this restaurant for my birthday and I'm so glad I did!! It was a beautiful experience and the food was exceptional!! Very worth the price. My son William got full. He never gets full! He said the orange chicken was the best he ever had. Our waitress Molly was wonderful!! She made my birthday experience positive and fun with her smile, kindness and professionalism! Once again, rice bowl does not disappoint. I probably order once or twice a month delivery from rice bowl snd every single time it is absolutely phenomenal. The food arrives hot. The food arrives delicious the food arrives by the kindest people. I think they're probably part of the family today I got to give it tip to a sweet little girl who I assume is a granddaughter. Anyway, we ordered the sizzling rice soup, cashew chicken and don't judge for this but I love Mushu. But I make my mushu with the cashew chicken so I order pancakes and extra hoisin sauce and don't knock it till you try it cause it's fabulous. Anyway, we got also some wontons which were hot and crunchy and just fabulous. we got some spring rolls and Jacob who took my order was an absolute dream what a charming, young, sweet service person seriously just a gem. anyway just wanted to give some shout outs to the rice bowl read more

Sorted by best to worst Orange chicken was shockingly the best thing I had. Didnt try the sushis too much, but had enough orange chicken to deem it worthy. Rice was really good too, maybe I've been eating poor man's rice for too long but this was nice and chewy rice. Sushi looked better than I thought, and tasted pretty good too for a cheap roll. Chicken egg fu yung, the one I chose, it looked good, tasted passable but it didnt live up to the hype. My fault cause I didnt know what egg fu yung was. All the egg is at the bottom, its like an egg pancake. Covered in basically a soup worth of sauce with other veggies and chicken. Mining a piece of that egg was mildly annoying and the flavor wasnt much to right home about. It was there, the sauce carried and I personally didnt like the flavor of the sauce. Ice cream mochi, very fancy looking, cream at the edge. Mochi sliced into quarters. I've said this before, mochi was good but the same quality can be found in stores for way cheaper Extra We went thursday right before closing (9-9:30pm) Lighting was weird, it was directly above so when I put my head over the table, I see my shadow Building looked like a shrine, really cool Had a thick chinese atmosphere to it, even smelled like a traditional chinese restaurant. Every time my gf and I go here we get the Family Deal of sushi and ITS SO GOOD!!! Comes out picture perfect and has great flavorful rolls they add onto it. Great ambience with nice dark lighting and friendly staff. Every time I get my paycheck I know where I'm going for dinner! read more

It was not good. Everything had an odd taste. Sweet and sour chicken a mushy texture inside most pieces. Like maybe the steam from the chicken and the breading made like a mushy layer between the crispy outside. I don't know but it was gross. The beef in the broccoli and beef also had a weird texture. it was so soft and not in a good way. Gummy bears are more chewy than the beef it really through me off and made me think the meat was fake or something. Won tons were stale. Thumbs down read more

I called in and placed an order for chicken breast and string beans in black bean sauce as well as Howard's special fried rice. They made a mistake in the back kitchen and gave me chow mein and chicken breast and string beans without the correct sauce. I ordered my food at 9 o'clock and picked it up at 9:20 right before they closed got home and saw that my order was incorrectly made called and notified them and then they remade my correct order and drove it all the way out to my house. This was such a nice surprise! Rice Bowl is located on the outside of downtown, in the suburban part of Chico. The front of the building is the original 1959 building and does not look like much. Then as one enters the building, it is so beautiful with Japanese and Chinese themed seating and decor. There is also a koi pond with 7 turtles . Adorable and fun to look at while waiting for our dinner. . On this Monday night, we got the Family Party Boat which is good for a hungry family of 4, The miso soup is a nice way to start the meal. The gyoza and dipping sauce was very nice. The tempura tower was also great! The teriyaki chicken was very good too. The chicken had a nice subtle teriyaki sauce (NOT a salt bomb). And the sushi, we were surprised at how pretty and fresh it was. We both really liked the salmon sushi with a very thin slice of lemon on it, which just elevated the experience of eating the salmon sushi. . Our waitstaff was quite kind, and has worked at the restaurant for 5 years. His grandma used to work there too, back in the day when the big back room was a ballroom/ dance floor. Now the big back room is dark red wood Asian themed seating. This restaurant is great for large parties, and they did a great job during Chico graduation week. read more

My friend an I had a tradition involving going to sushi for his birthday at Rice Bowl, this year was no different, except that the service was so terrible that neither of us will return. We were 2 of the only people in the restaurant; after being seated at the sushi bar , the chef did not acknowledge us for what must have been 5 minutes. Finally we put our 1st order in, and the food was fine, but we quickly got the impression from the chef that we were an inconvenience to him. Great food, decent atmosphere, but really lacking on beer choices. No draft beer, only bottles, and they want pint prices. Chico is the home of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Can't believe any restaurant in this town that serves beer doesn't have draft options. read more

My husband and I were so happy to order our anniversary dinner from The Rice Bowl. Boy, were we disappointed. It used to be fresher. The prawns were like cardboard, our favorite Howards Special Chowmain is not what it used to be. Very little flavor to all of the dishes and the Honey Walnut Shrimp was absolutely flavorless. We got Won Ton Soup. It had almost no liquid, it was all vegetables and chunks of meat. Again, no flavor. All in all our dinner was a disappointment all of the way around. With all of these changes and flavorless, overcooked food, we won't be dining there any longer. read more

I ordered Shrimp In Lobster sauce and it was absolutely disgusting and distasteful. There was a total of 7 pieces of shrimp but the plate was packed with gumbo mushrooms and hard carrots and potatoes to hide that. What an absolute disgrace. It was obvious that everything was frozen and not fresh, nothing about it tasted fresh at all. Almost $20 for a plate of slob and snot. Rice bowl is the last place in town that I will ever recommend. Stopped in today as a usual when back in Chico, my family had been going here since it opened in 1959. That ends today, absolutely garbage, it's clear they are cooking ahead and serving as they get orders. Everything was cold, egg rolls, paper wrapped chicken, only thin Gh warm were fried prawns. Which we're obviously some type of premade frozen product. Entrees we're all cold as well, we only ordered off the Chinese menu. And the entrees all substandard I'd say Panda Express was better. Owners have a nice Maybach parked in back should be putting that money into their food quality. What was once a really good place is now horrible. Service was great, the young guy who waited on us was courteous professional and did a good job. Feel bad for him as the food is what will cause people to not come back. I hate slamming a business, but as a business owner you never fix what isn't broken, and these new owners have destroyed this place. Shame on them!. read more

Great servings for the price, especially the chow mien. Unfortunately, it was some of the worst food I've had in a while. The general tso tasted like gas station food, which isn't that bad but the chow mien and soup was pretty much inedible. I ate here once about 5 months ago and thought it was pretty decent that time, not sure what happened but will not be returning. read more
