I grew up with Chinese food in Chinatown Philadelphia. It was really good. I worried about getting good Chinese when we moved to NC. It was acceptable. I think that Rice does an excellent job and better than what I had come to accept in NC. I can stay in Middlebury! I have only gotten take out. There is frankly no atmosphere, or maybe negative atmosphere for eating in. However the folks are really nice, the food is prepared promptly and as I said, it's really good. read more

Was in the area last week and feel called upon to share that this (a tiny, very budget-friendly, no-frills operation) was the best Chinese takeout I (someone who's lived in NYC for almost 20 years) have ever had! Rice is the best Chinese food in Middlebury. It's a great meal for a reasonable price. I ordered off of the dinner specials menu and got General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, a spring roll, and two crab rangoons for $11.61. A fortune cookie was included of course. The food was prepared quickly and I was walking off with my order within 15 minutes of placing it. The chicken was spicy, sweet, and crispy underneath the sauce. The spring roll was hot and crunchy. I'm a vegetarian and they have always been very direct with what food has no animal products.

My friends and I crave Asian food, so this is a great change of scenery from the dining halls at Middlebury College (go Panthers!). The restaurant workers are all Mandarin speakers who probably feel out of place in homogeneously white Vermont, but they make a living, and I'm glad they're there adding just a bit more diversity to the state. There are tables so you can dine-in, though from what I've seen, people typically order to-go and probably go eat at home with their families. (Must be nice.) There was one day when table service was particularly bad. We had already ordered our food, but they didn't really get to making our orders until half an hour later, likely because of all the people coming in and ordering take out. I mean, I guess if people are in a rush, you try to make their food sooner, but that does not justify delaying other people's orders just because they were sitting down and this probably less pressed for time. (On top of that, I was supposed to go volunteer at a fund raiser but I completely missed the event because dinner was taking too long and my fellow committee members were mad at me... partially my fault, of course, but that conversation is for another time.) The food itself is satisfying. It's not per se top-tier Chinese cuisine (we're in Vermont), but when you're away from good "ethnic" food for half a year you take whatever you can get. And the food is still mighty tasty. The Sesame Chicken is always delicious. My friends likewise swear by the House Crispy Chicken, but that personally isn't my favorite, but it's still tasty! I usually get the dinner combo, which is a fairly good price and it's a large portion of food, so you're getting your bang for your buck. Also, probably an unpopular opinion: I love the cream cheese wontons included in the dinner combo. (I also like to bring the leftovers back to campus, and not have to leave my room for food, but someone is paying for my dining hall meals, so I should probably make proper use of those.) They have a lot of options, so you know we are definitely coming back to this place. I'm eating through the whole menu before I graduate. read more

So glad I finally got to try this place. Rice has restored my faith in local Chinese cuisine. My immediate reaction was how clean this place is. Next thing was a welcoming and friendly woman who took my order. She offered hot tea while I waited for my take out order which was perfect for this blustery first day of October. The food was not disappointing. These days, I expect frozen products at places like this. This is not one of those places. Eggrolls, rangoons and scallion pancake appeared house made and all were fresh tasting and made with perfect blends of the usual ingredients. Seasoned with the Asian essence I miss in most fast food places. But most obvious to me was the care that was taken to fold and roll each piece with technique, clearly not cloned by machine. Shrimp with lobster sauce had fresh zucchini, carrots, mushrooms along with baby corn, water chestnuts, and pork. I was so glad to see this version instead of the brown meat gravy and tiny shrimp that is most often served. So now I can add another reason (Lobby, Costello's and Nino) to visit Middlebury more often. read more

This was our second takeout experience. Second was just as good as the first. Food was still piping hot when opened up at home. Staff very nice. Kitchen looked clean. Only neutral comment, although the boneless spareribs were tasty and NOT all fatty, the sauce was a bit too sweet. Perhaps having it over white rice would cut that sweetness. While in Middlebury Vermont we were looking for a cheap decent meal and came across Rice. Sure enough this hit the spot. Rice offers your basic Chinese fare at a really reasonable price. The portion sizes are massive for the price you pay. If you eat in at Rice you will more than likely get to meet Eric (Owners Child). Eric is mentioned in many other reviews across the web and is slowly becoming an internet sensation in himself. We were in Middlebury for business and after we found out that our first choice for lunch was only open for dinner we decided on this place. It was friendly and the young 4 year old son of the owner was very attentive and showed us all his cars and delighted us throughout the meal. he really made us laugh. The food was good and well prepared but was just ordinary. Nothing was special. But also nothing to complain about either. It seemed to be doing a good take out business as well as eat in. Love this place. HUGE portions and I normally will eat half for dinner and half for lunch the next day. Sweet and sour chicken is great as well as basil chicken and basil tofu. For the vegetarians out there try the general tso tofu. Huge pieces of crispy tofu cooked perfectly and a great sauce over rice. We spent $45 on a huge meal to go thinking under new management we would get a delicious meal. WRONG. The General Tso's chicken was more breading than chicken and was bland and not spicy at all. The House Rice was tasteless as hell. The beef sticks were over cooked and more like beef jerky. The egg rolls were terrible and tasteless and the wrappers soggy. We ordered crab rangoons and they were barely acceptable but they gave hardly any sauce with them. The dumplings were overcooked and the sauce was not good either. We were so disappointed and would have gone in and complained but they spoke such poor English I don't think they would have understood or done a thing about it, either. We will never go back. I recommend if you want decent Chinese food in Middlebury you head down Route 7 and go to the other place. They put real effort into their cooking. read more
