Had a nice meal here last saturday night! Got the melted cabbage, a bao bun, and the char siu pork. The food was delicious, the bao bun being a highlight. The pork was served with a little asian slaw that was good, but definitely could've used more of it to balance the pork, and maybe some rice? Didn't feel like a complete meal. The waitress was also a bit cold, especially after we told her we weren't ordering drinks (we don't drink). She then asked if we'd looked at their mocktail section. Felt a bit pressured to buy something else and a bit like she was trying to run up the bill. I totally understand waitstaff wanting big tips, but it was a bit pushy. The vibe of this spot is immaculate. We went and sat at the bar. There was a little tv and we watched the bills lose in the playoffs (loved that). The bartender was hilarious and provided great service. the food was fire!! The green beans were randomly my favorite. the salt level was perfect. I also got the red curry dish with tofu which was very yummy - perfect amount of spice. and cookies were the perfect finale ! I preferred the ginger one but the ubbe was interesting too. My family and I came here close to close on a slow Sunday. We were seated at the bar. I ordered the plum wine spritz and it was delicious; not too much of the tang that I find comes with most wines. My sister ordered a gin hibiscus drink that was complex in flavor yet still felt light. The space is small but cozy, and the subtle ocean theme is really nice. The service we received was exceptional. The cooks and bartender were very personable and answered our questions thoroughly and with ease. Since it was a slow day, the cook even prepared us an extra little dish (that was delicious by the way). The owner catches a lot of the fish they serve, so it is the freshest you will get in the valley. Their menu changes frequently, so some things you see online may not be available. We ordered several dishes to share: the smashed cucumbers, the tuna tataki, the inari nigiri, and the dry fried shiitake. You can tell the food is good because I forgot to take pictures before we started eating. The cucumbers were very flavorful and had the numbing heat associated with Szechuan cuisine. The tuna tataki had a perfect sear on it. The inari is hard to mess up but was still very good! The highlight dish for me was certainly the dry fried shiitake. It was very flavorful with some heat to it and tasted smoky as it was cooked with bacon. The rice portion was a good size so as not to drown out the mushrooms. We left full and happy. One thing to note- the spicy yellowtail roll is actually spicy, so if you can't handle your spice you should opt for something else. My family has lived in the valley for more than 20 years and my mom says this is the best restaurant in the valley right now. We will certainly be back and will be telling our friends about it. read more

Our friend introduced us to this place. I find it very hidden and cool spot to be. It seems like only local people hanging out there. This place is not that big, it has 2 separate sections which are bar and sit down table area. We got different cocktails from the menu, drinks were pretty good and not water down but the price was on the steep side for sure. The bartender definitely knew his stuff and made very tasty cocktails. We got some appetizers which were Hibachi, Tuna Tataki and scallop sushi rolls to snack on. The taste was ok good, except for scallop sushi rolls that we thought was way too pricey - 2 small pieces for $12 and we didn't taste much of scallops. We might go back for more cocktails when we are in the area again. Not so sure about food. Nice vibes and friendly staff though. read more

What a gem! I was so excited to find the perfect mix of cozy, ececlectic , and unexpected at Scrag & Roe. Nate, Jack and the whole team were a welcomed chat. They had reccomendations, humor and a knowledge of their craft. We enjoyed a few items : prawns, spicy cucs, tuna taki as my main, and pork belly as my husbands. All were delicious, but I must say the tuna was some of the most delicate and flavorful I have had in a while. My spicy Paloma was the perfect kick too It sounds like Nate has some great sushi events the pipeline and a patio that screams summer date . We will be regulars for sure. read more

It seems that the menu changes depending on what chef Nathan Davis feels like cooking, but as of December 2024 / January 2025, Scrag and Roe is serving the most authentic pan-Asian food in the Mad River Valley and, I suspect, for a good many miles around. It's not just authentic; it's beautifully made with well curated ingredients and extremely delicious, the kind of food that warms you from the inside out in the cold, Vermont winter when the snow has been coming down all day. The four of us tried a good portion of the menu, comprised of small and large plates that are all meant to be shared, family style: - smashed cucumbers (sesame, chiles, garlic, cilantro; $7) -- simple, fantastic, very garlicky quick pickles that are exactly as you would find in Taiwan or China. Spicier than what we are used to, excellent. - tiger salad (leek, carrot, cucumber, peanuts, cilantro; $11) -- We've had this dish frequently at northern Chinese restaurants in and around Hangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai. I don't remember seeing carrot in versions we tried there, but there are many variations. This one was true to the flavor profile, only a touch spicy by our standards, absolutely delicious. - grilled prawns, smaller portion size (chili-garlic-scallion oil; $12) -- three to the small order. I liked, but did not love, these. The prawns were a bit tough, but pleasantly seasoned. There was a wee bit of heat, but not much. - tuna tataki (soy, ginger, citrus, sesame; $16) -- Tuna was a high enough grade for the task and not overly fishy. It was perfectly seared, pleasantly dressed. Primary consumer, a newly minted 13 year old who is big on sushi / sashimi / raw neta, but not cooked fish, enjoyed. - spicy dan dan mian (noodles, ground beef, Sichuan peppercorn, sesame, peanut; $22) -- This dish packs serious (pleasant) heat, which definitely creeps up on you. I have a high tolerance for spice and this (eventually) made me sweat in a very pleasant way. Noodles were springy, sauce was well balanced. - coconut curry (chicken or tofu, carrot, spices, carrot, potato; $22) -- This is a lovely dish that comes into being at the convergence of many cultures. Fish sauce is often used in this dish if it's Pinoy (from the Philippines) or Thai. There wasn't any that I could detect in this dish, which I'm sure my wimpity wimp family appreciated. It was more similar to versions you might find in Hong Kong and Japan. Lovely wait staff (our server was tag teaming as the hostess and bar tender -- wow), pleasant cocktails, interesting sake list. Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options are clearly labeled on the menu -- very cool. We were so very delighted by this cozy new restaurant (in the space that used to be Peasant). I suspect that authentic pan-Asian food is kind of a risk in these parts. But it's so darn good that that we really wish we could support it year round. I hope we can keep this place open, Friends! Ate at S&R twice in the past month. The first time was with family, eight of us, and it was one of the best meals I've eaten in VT in the 20 yrs. that I've lived here. the pace, quality, service and flavors were all amazing. My wife and I went to celebrate our anniversary and the menu has completely changed to pan-asian and was also amazing, tuna tataki, tiger salad, steam buns w/5 spice pork, prawns with chili all amazing! We had the best meal here ! We come from Portland Oregon where there are a lot of creative dining options and this topped them all. We loved the fusion influence of owner Nathan's travel experiences across the world. The Dan Dan noodles were out of this world and so unique, the flank steak was completely fabulous and the Tuna Tataki was delicious. We loved the craft cocktails. Prices were reasonable. This place has nice atmosphere good service and an interesting menu. We ordered four dishes, all of them were nicely prepared with good ingredients. However, three of the four were salty to the extreme. The server did instruct us to be sure to buffer the ma po tofu with white rice but that did little to reduce saltiness. Between us, my wife and I have about 100 years of restaurant dining. We don't mind,even like saltiness but this was by far the saltiest food we have ever been served. This is the second time we have gone to this restaurant to get the snapper, and they have been out of it. A third time they had one snapper, not two, for four of us. The snapper is why we go there. Also out of the mussels, which is the other reason we go there. This after we brought 3 other couples to the restaurant to show it off. And the restaurant confirmed they had the snapper and mussels by telephone. The server was extremely rude. Three members of the group are hard of hearing and there was a large music speaker right over our table so we could not hear each other. We asked her to turn the speaker off, and she said "I won't do it." She said "it is a loud restaurant." Seeming to suggest we should not come there if it is so loud and we are hard of hearing. We said that we understand you cannot do anything about the loud talking in the place (it is very loud), but at least you can turn off the speaker. She again admonished us: "I won't do it." Her voice was raised and other restaurant patrons looked over and wondered what we had done to warrant this. It was embarrassing. Then she returned to the table to inform us there was no snapper and no mussels. Not a good start to the evening. What food was left on the menu was good, but our mood was not. The server later did turn the speaker off, but never apologized or showed any remorse for treating us like we had done something wrong. Very disappointing. We had high hopes for this place and have been sending so many people there. No more. read more
