    Maple Creme Brûlée.
    Mark B.

Great spot in Vergennes, Vermont. A quaint and cozy French style bistro, with a good ambiance so absent from the soulless "modern industrial loft" setting so many places have today. This is a great spot for a romantic evening, a small family dinner, or other occasion, in addition to just a nice dinner just because. In pandemic times, a reservation is currently required for in-dining, and spaces are limited, so that reservation is definitely recommended. They did a great job managing the space and applying sensible COVID19 precautions. None of that detracted from an incredible meal. The food and service were both on point. The Duck Rillet appetizer was good, but I had regretted not having the escargot instead, just because the garlic aromatics coming off that dish made it seem all the more superior. The brie and bacon chicken was a perfect blend of flavors, as were the sides of mashed potatoes (with heavy cream, butter, and garlic), and the French Fries, which were nice and warm and crispy. Of course, Vermont maple syrup makes most things better, and so maple all the things! Which is the maple custard of the maple creme brûlée for dessert, which was also yummy. Many thanks and respect to all the staff for working through such difficult times. Will definitely be returning in the future!

Oh my, how divine. We loved everything about this place (except for the appetizer we ordered but even that wasn't enough to knock off a star). The ambiance is adorable with tons of framed prints and cartoons. Drapery masking the kitchen door. We were seated in one of the cozy corners on the upper level. Service was friendly and impeccable. We started with the butternut squash ravioli, which was underwhelming. But the bread and butter was fantastic. Our entrees, chicken and Brie and steak with creamed spinach were both delicious. And who doesn't love mashed potatoes (so creamy) and fries (served with ketchup and two aiolis)? We most definitely would frequent this place if we lived in the area.

The ambiance and vibe of the this gem in Vergennes remain welcoming and tranquil. The service was exceptional, as well as the food. From the complementary bread to the corn chowder and duck entrée, everything was well-seasoned and wonderfully prepared. The cheesecake was off the chain as well.

Wonderful French bistro in the heart of Vergennes Vermont. we've been coming here for over 15 years every time we visit Basin Harbor. The food is absolutely wonderful and the prices are amazing for the quality and portions. all of their appetizers are delicious but my family and I especially like the Kalamata olive Caesar salad. The serving staff is extremely friendly and add so much to the dining experience. I highly recommend the dining experience at Blacksheep

I had heard about this place as a college parent and reservations are hard or impossible to get so when we got one, we took it. We really liked the service, however the meals were disappointing. We ordered the calamari ( lukewarm) and waldorf salad ( cold) . The thai haddock with a bit bland and mild curry and i liked it but only half eaten by my daughter. My husband was disappointed in the recommended chicken dis. The mushroom fritters were good but the stuffing in center was odd combination . The creme brulee was okay. Glad i checked this off my list and perhaps we went on an off day, but i have had better in Vergennes

    The most beautiful, intimate setting!

We celebrated our 20th anniversary here a few nights ago! It was the best decision we made!! The food, atmosphere and service were phenomenal! We actually cancelled our next nights reservation at a different restaurant to return to Black Sheep! We can't wait to come back!

Split chicken breast entree- this and the Waldorf salad were delicious. Our server was so kind also! Best meal I've had in months!

Don't miss a meal here! We are in town for just one night and hit the jackpot! Waldof Sald and chicken breast were perfect!

After checking numerous reviews and website menus, It appeared to me that Twisted Carrot was one of…read morethe most interesting restaurants in the area, in terms of menu and atmosphere. My dinner experience there certainly lived up to expectations. The restaurant is small, seating maybe about 30 people. I wouldn't call it intimate, but I would call it friendly. The menu items are enjoyably named, with some interesting ingredient and flavor combinations. Service is fast and friendly; 3 servers can take care of all the tables quite nicely, with time for fun conversation as you go. The cocktail list is small, and the drinks are simply garnished, but everything we tried was quite flavorful and reasonably priced. As an appetizer, the Moo Moo Dippers, filled with shaved ribeye and corned beef and combined with the remoulade sauce for dipping. were addicting. My salmon filet came atop a bed of roasted sweet potato and corn hash and a sauce on top to give it more interesting presentation and flavor. The pork medallions were similarly appealing. We passed on dessert, because most of the offerings had some form of caffeine in them (e.g., boozy affogato), but I'm certain they would have been equally delicious. I was surprised the restaurant closed so early on days they're actually open, i.e., 8pm. So if you want convenient dining, get there early for dinner, because it does fill up.

The delectable dishes more than make up for the limited number of offerings; there's something for everyone at Michael's On The HIll. My partner and I visited Michael's On The Hill on a Saturday evening in mid-March; we reserved a table for two after we finished skiing at nearby Stowe. If you want a table during the high season, reserve it early--space is limited. Andrew greeted us at the door and after escorting us to our table, handed us off to Heather, our server. Heather is a Professional Server and it shows: Throughout our two+ hour meal, she was available but never intrusive and conversational but never too familiar: She's worked at Michael's for more than two decades and knows the menu perhaps better than the Chef--her recommendations were excellent: Rather than pushing the highest-price menu items, she suggested dishes based on her knowledge, experience, and guest preferences. We started with the local Artisinal cheese plate--three generous cheese selections accompanied by apricot chutney, sweet red grapes, pickled vegetables, candied walnuts, and toast points. The balance of sweet and sour was superlative; the appetizer presented tastefully on a cured wood bark platter--two or three people can pick their favorites and mix and match flavors. The tasteful teaser was a trailer for the main attraction. For entrees, I had the Maple Glazed Duck Breast with Cider Duck Glace accompanied by sweet potato hash, Orange and Arugula salad, and roasted baby carrots; my partner had the special: Beef Bourguignon on top of a cheese polenta with sauteed spinach and a delightful Mirepoix ("meer-PWAH"). Beef Bourguignon is a classic French stew of tender beef braised in red wine--hearty, flavorful, and filling, this French dish is perfect after a long day of skiing. Executive Chef Hess' flourishes transformed the traditional dish into a magically delicious medley of complementary flavors. The duck was cooked to perfection: Soft, warm, and tender on the inside with a hint of smokiness--balanced nicely by the maple glaze and the cider glace. The sweet potato hash was actually small, sweet potato "cubes" mostly hidden below the citrusy salad. When I finally forked the sweet potato cubes, they'd soaked up the cider duck glace, detonating a cluster bomb of flavors in my mouth. We paired the smokey duck and stewy Beef with a succulent bottle of Andrew Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, whose rich cherry-cassis notes and silky tannins enhanced the sauces and spices of our entrees. Micheal's wine list reads like a Great Novel--long, engaging, occasionally intimidating. Here's where Heather re-enters our Micheal's meal story: In addition to letting us taste an alternative or two from already-open bottles, her familiarity with the menu made our decision much easier. Finally, because I just can't say no to Tiramisu, we were presented with a generous slice of sponge cake soaked in espresso (beans cured down the street), layered with whipped Moscarpone cheese, topped with cocoa powder. We cherished a couple bites and asked to take the remainder home (by the way, Tiramisu is part of a healthy breakfast). Yes, Michael's On The Hill is pricey--with a 23% percent tip, our meal was about $275--but every bite was worth it. Find out for yourself.
