This was an awesome find. We went on a Tuesday evening, without reservations, and were lucky that we could get a table for 3. We had 3 different meals: the Thai broiled haddock in a coconut curry sauce, the black sheep bistro steak, and the duck leg confit. All were served at the same time and were outstanding . I'm still in awe of how 3 totally different meals came out the same time and all cooked to perfection...Especially as fish can be overdone or underdone in less than a second. We shared the maple creme brulee which was also very good. The bread on the table was fresh and the family style French fried and garlic mashed potatoes were a nice touch. Disappointed in service and food quality after we were recommended to try this place. Server was rude bringing sugar for Iced tea which tasted awful. Pork medallions with asparagus were cold and server didn't even check on us once. Then we received a voicemail during meal that we missed a reservation even though we ate there? They also introduced us to a local brew...a Scottish ale from Drop-In Brewery called Heart of Lothian. Liked it so much we looked for it at the local supermarket and bought a few. We drove up from Albany, NY to meet friends visiting from out of state. We both agree that our experience was so good, we'd make the trip again just for us! The food was delicious, using high quality ingredients, and the portions were generous. We started with waldorf salads and enjoyed the cranberry chèvre chicken and Thai haddock, savoring every bite! Great spot in Vergennes, Vermont. A quaint and cozy French style bistro, with a good ambiance so absent from the soulless "modern industrial loft" setting so many places have today. This is a great spot for a romantic evening, a small family dinner, or other occasion, in addition to just a nice dinner just because. In pandemic times, a reservation is currently required for in-dining, and spaces are limited, so that reservation is definitely recommended. They did a great job managing the space and applying sensible COVID19 precautions. None of that detracted from an incredible meal. The food and service were both on point. The Duck Rillet appetizer was good, but I had regretted not having the escargot instead, just because the garlic aromatics coming off that dish made it seem all the more superior. The brie and bacon chicken was a perfect blend of flavors, as were the sides of mashed potatoes (with heavy cream, butter, and garlic), and the French Fries, which were nice and warm and crispy. Of course, Vermont maple syrup makes most things better, and so maple all the things! Which is the maple custard of the maple creme brûlée for dessert, which was also yummy. I do not understand how this place has such high ratings. We went for a special occasion dinner seeing the reviews and were very disappointed. We were sat at a table next to the stairs, so the servers were constantly walking by. It took about 10 minutes for anyone to greet us after we sat down. The bench I was seated on was up so high compared to the table that I had to hunch over to eat the food and could barely fit my knees under the table. We ordered two appetizers which came out alarmingly quickly. The goat cheese dip had clearly been pre-plated and refrigerated as the entire plate was freezing cold including the bread you were supposed to dip in the cheese. Our entrees were very mediocre and the steak had a weird texture to it that was unappetizing. I think it's strange that the meals all come with mashed potatoes and fries, however they were one of the tastier things we ate. Dessert was alright. We were in and out in 50 minutes (!), due to the clearly pre-cooked apps and entrees, for what was supposed to be a romantic dinner. Starry Night, albeit more expensive, is just down the road and is a million times better. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Oh my, how divine. We loved everything about this place (except for the appetizer we ordered but even that wasn't enough to knock off a star). The ambiance is adorable with tons of framed prints and cartoons. Drapery masking the kitchen door. We were seated in one of the cozy corners on the upper level. Service was friendly and impeccable. We started with the butternut squash ravioli, which was underwhelming. But the bread and butter was fantastic. Our entrees, chicken and Brie and steak with creamed spinach were both delicious. And who doesn't love mashed potatoes (so creamy) and fries (served with ketchup and two aiolis)? We most definitely would frequent this place if we lived in the area. read more

My husband and I dined at The Black Sheep Bistro one evening during our short vacation in Vergennes in late October. We made reservations to dine there, which was a good thing, because even with some outdoor seating, dining space is limited in this small restaurant. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the bread that was served before the dinner was hot, crusty and delicious. For those who are counting calories or have a small appetite, beware that each table is served garlic mashed potatoes, and French fries (family style) along with their entrees. Enjoyed a pre-concert dinner at Black Sheep. Despite being quite a bit early for our reservation, we were warmly welcomed and seated. We had great cocktails and an appetizer of homemade chips and a sweet potato dip. Once we were ready to order, two of us chose the steak entree, one a fish entree and I had a roasted beet dish. I had heard about this place as a college parent and reservations are hard or impossible to get so when we got one, we took it. We really liked the service, however the meals were disappointing. We ordered the calamari ( lukewarm) and waldorf salad ( cold) . The thai haddock with a bit bland and mild curry and i liked it but only half eaten by my daughter. My husband was disappointed in the recommended chicken dis. The mushroom fritters were good but the stuffing in center was odd combination . The creme brulee was okay. My husband and I dined here on our 54th wedding anniversary. We both really enjoyed the food. I had the halibut and my husband had the duck. The fish was very well cooked, flavorful, and tender. My husband loved the duck confit which was tasty and fell apart on touch. Our server was very attentive and engaging. She immediately fixed me an amazing old fashioned cocktail on ice. Unfortunately, the ambiance here needs an upgrade. We were seated in a very small alcove in front of the door of kitchen. Waitresses and other employees were constantly coming and going by our table. This was our first time to Black Sheep Bistro and boy was it worth the hour drive to get there. It was a Wed evening and they were booked inside, so we sat out on the patio. We were lucky the October weather cooperated, so it was fine. The meal and service were fabulous. We had the Charcuterie board to start, the Haddock in coconut curry sauce and the Salmon. All delicious! Everyone we interacted with was super nice and friendly. We will definitely go again! If you should decide to sit on the patio, the road out front is pretty busy and includes large trucks. If that is going to annoy you, then you might want to rethink the patio. Really enjoyed black sheep bistro! I appreciate that the menu has set prices for starters, mains, desserts and the wine menu- it makes it easy to share dishes when going with friends or family! Each meal comes with French fries and an assortment of sauces, warm bread, and garlicky mashed potatoes. We ordered the Brie & Bacon Chicken Breast, Duck Breast, Waldorf Salad and Pork dumplings with maple sauce. It was all delicious! For dessert, we got the flourless chocolate cake with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream and the maple creme brûlée. The maple creme brûlée was heaven!! A small romantic bistro with very well made high-end entrees. I had the Waldorf salad appetizer, and my wife and I shared the haddock and the chicken breast, and we were fighting over who got the last bites! It was New Years Eve so we splurged on dessert too - the crème brûlée, and the flourless chocolate cake, which was very smooth and fudgy (actually not really cake, but yummy!). All dinner entrees on the weekend menu start at $25. I had the Haddock which comes with their staple mashed potatoes and fries (with special ketchup and two awesome sauces). As a starter, I had the pork dumplings. Everything was delicious. The servers were conciencious and friendly. I go back to the Black Sheep Bistro about once every year or two, just to check it out. I used to go much more frequently, but the food quality took such a turn for the worse that I stopped. I love Vergennes. The town is small but has a very quaint and cozy vibe. The first time I went to BSB it had just opened, and the food and service were both very good. They used high-quality ingredients, the food was served hot, and the special little touches (fresh-baked bread, frites served in a paper cone with their own house-made dipping sauces) won me over. I'm not sure why the food quality has gone downhill so much. I first noticed a deterioration in quality just after the owners opened their second restaurant, The Bearded Frog in Shelburne. I theorized that perhaps they were focusing more on the new restaurant and the people left in charge of overseeing the BSB did not have similarly high standards. Now a days, more often then not, main dishes come out of the kitchen cold or luke warm. The quality of the food itself (lower grade steak and other ingredients) just isn't as good as it used to be, and hospitality is lacking. Don't get me wrong, this is still a pretty good restaurant, especially for Vergennes where there aren't many options, but many of the things that made it truly special in the first few years have diminished or disappeared. The owners have gone on to buy out and take over other restaurants in the area (The Bob Cat Cafe in Bristol and the Lobby down by the river in Middlebury). I haven't tried the new Bob Cat yet, but the Lobby in Middlebury is just ok. The decor is quite nice. The food is just so so. In some ways, the owners of BSB are upping the food game in Vermont as they are moving into markets where the food offerings were already quite mediocre and giving people ok places to eat out. But given what the BSB used to be and what it is now, I find myself wishing they'd put the same focus and attention into food quality at all of their other restaurants as they used to at the BSB. When they are really trying and focusing, they can produce very good food. Now a days it seems they are more focused on ambiance and less on food quality. read more

From the same owner and chef of The Bearded Frog comes Black Sheep Bistro, a more casual French-style bistro in the heart of Vergennes. The food is very similar in style to the aforementioned restaurant, but done better and at a fraction of the cost. The atmosphere is also more inviting with a very European outdoor patio, which is perfect for dinner on a warm summer night. The menu rotates on a seasonal basis and while some items such as the duck confit are the same as The Bearded Frog, Black Sheep Bistro also features some very original and creative dishes of its own. Appetizers and entrees and all priced at $7 and $19, respectively. We started with a grape & almond white gazpacho and the tuna cucumber tartar with wasabi creme fraiche and falsely advertised taro root chips. The chilled gazpacho was a refreshing starter for dinner. The tuna cucumber tartar had a lot of acidity and flavor, but the cucumbers were difficult to eat and there was no real need for the iceberg lettuce. We were also given crostini instead of taro root chips. For the entrees, we had the coriander crusted bistro steak with sofrito sauce and the applewood smoked bacon and brie stuffed chicken breast with balsamic cream. Both entrees came with a large complimentary side of mashed potatoes and a large cone of french fries. The french fries were perfectly fried and came with the most delicious sweet basil, garlic, and ketchup dipping sauces. The sofrito sauce was very much like a salsa verde, but went well with the steak. The stuffed chicken breast was outstanding and was a wonderful twist on chicken cordon bleu. The balsamic cream was definitely the highlight of the dish. We ended with a delicious housemade chevre cheesecake with black currant sauce. Black Sheep Bistro is a great example of a restaurant that can translate great food from farm to table. It's definitely worth the 40 minute drive from Burlington to try. read more
