I went in for a tummy tuck revision and breast reconstruction after an infection from prior surgery disfigured my breast. He did an ok job on my breasts, though his heavy-handed and uneven sutures have left garish scars, and he failed to do the procedure as we had discussed. My biggest concern is the botch job he did of the tummy tuck scar revision. He destroyed my abdomen aesthetically and functionally, and when I spoke to him about it he assured me it would settle and improve. Years later, the problems and appearance have worsened. Instead of correcting the scar, he instead removed most of my belly below the scar and pulled my pubis up about three inches so that it now resides where my belly should be. In order to do this he had to stretch my perineum which has caused other embarrassing issues that have made my day to day life and exercising uncomfortable. I called for my complete records but after five or six requests, failed to provide everything and he did not want to send before photos, and for good reason. When I requested an appointment to discuss ongoing issues, which did not settle with time, he refused to see me because I "disparaged his work." More likely he doesn't want his new staff to see the mess he made of my once lovely abdomen that 1) no doctor should have touched 2) he made worse and did not improve as he promised. He also did a hack job on one of my eyelids which pops open and makes me look monstrous if I am not constantly aware of my facial expressions. I think Dr. Bartlett has a great bedside manner, but if you criticize him he gets nasty and retaliatory. I also question his fine motor skills, because some of his stitches look like a third-grader did them and the scarring does not go away. I short, I now have pubic hairs and what was once between my legs, where my belly should be. I think Dr. Bartlett hates women. Way to go, Dr. Bartlett. He should admit and address his error, and he should pay for a flap to relieve the unbearable tightness. read more

Do NOT reach out to this surgeon if you are a nonbinary person seeking a reduction instead of full top surgery. I called to inquire for a consultation they turned me away, not even willing to schedule an appointment simply because I was a nonbinary person seeking a reduction instead of top surgery. Before this call I was planning to do it with a surgeon who just specialized in reductions , but decided it was better to go to someone who both does reductions AND works with trans patients to feel more understood/supported through the process. The thing is... what I was asking for was not outside the scope of a "normal" reduction. I'm starting from a D or DD, so going to a requested B should be perfectly within reason for any doctor who does reductions and I still wanted a feminine (though small) breast. It was also not an insurance matter that made them turn me away. Though they said they would not be willing to bill insurance for a reduction for gender dysphoria (which some surgeons will do...) I already had significant paperwork together for back pain (doctors letters, PT, etc.) which I also experience immensely with my small frame. I even told them I was willing to pay out of pocket if insurance couldn't work! I was honestly taken back that such a renowned "trans friendly" surgeon was so closed minded to turn me away due to my slightly nuanced (yet quite common..) situation. He referred me to two young doctors who I had never heard of with no proof of their work online (I do my research when it comes to someone cutting open my body) and any reviews I did see were mostly bad. So I guess he'd rather just put me in harms way. Things NEED to change. So many doctors do not take the time to understand nonbinary patients, and it is especially important for doctors working with trans patients to do the work to understand things outside binary expectations. read more

I'm sorry to write a bad review, but Dr. Bartlett operated on a precancerous birthmark on my child's back several years ago and assured us the scarring would be minimal and even not noticeable within a year. First of all, he never shared the results of the growth he removed. I'm not confident he even had it tested. Second, it is now at least 4 years later and the poor child has a lumpy, bumpy, 8" -long scar that shows no sign of ever getting better. My child's pediatrician, who recommended Dr. Bartlett, was aghast when she saw the scar, and continues to comment on it each year when we go in for the well-visit. I would never recommend nor revisit Dr. Bartlett for any cosmetic surgery. read more

I have held this in since 1995... and I just have to vent because as I am looking for plastic surgeons to fix the job he did on me, I scoff at his 5 star rating!!! It is because of Richard Bartlett that I am afraid to ever allow anyone to touch my body... even to fix the hideous job that he did!!! But I have to, because I just can't live like this any longer. I was 16 years old, and while the surgery was somewhat of an emergency- he could have offered a little care and even offered to fix the job that he did once I was stronger and healthier. Instead, he told me to lose weight!!! When I had in fact already lost a significant amount of weight. I am sorry... losing weight is not going to fix the slanted fold you placed where my a$$ crack is supposed to be. In fact, I got down to 135lbs at my smallest and guess what Dr. Bartlett it was still there!!! I used to have a luscious round booty... granted there was celluite, but I am okay with that. But do you have any idea what it is like to have hideous deformities in intimate areas of your body??? The a$$ is supposed to be one of the sexiest areas on a woman, especially with our new sexy goddesses, Beyonce, J-lo and Miss Kardashian. My husband was an a$$ man, I am an a$$ woman. I haven't been able to wear bathing suits ever since this surgery!!! I can't even wear clothes without assets to shape my a$$et. Of course I have cellulite, but again I am okay with that... I am not okay with sporting a deformed a$$ for my entire life and I am certainly not okay with him having a 5 star rating... Dr. Bartlett, never apologized and never took responsibility for the horrible scar and for the horrible shape he left behind... and he never offered to redo the job. Which at this point... Despite my surgery being several years ago, I feel compelled to give a rating. I had breast reduction (Dr. Bartlett told me he did more breast reductions than anyone else in Boston). Well first of all to the people who gave him bad reviews: you have to do your research first. I went to the person that I thought would do the best job. My breasts 12 years later look amazing! For those people looking for a specific area of the body to change, it's important to check that a surgeon has done hundreds of those particular procedures. No doctor can be the best at everything. The procedure Dr. Bartlett performed on me was transgender female to male "top surgery". Dr. Bartlett was recommended to me from my Primary care doctor, who is also my endocrinologist. I did fully research Dr. Bartlett, and he matched the criteria I was looking for. It was very important to me to have a board certified plastic surgeon perform my surgery. Many trans men have surgery with a surgeon who has training in "general surgery" without training or certification for making the results aesthetically pleasing. It's possible to get a double mastectomy with one of these surgeons for a discount price, however I was not pleased with the results I was seeing. Dr. Bartlett is a board certified plastic surgeon. He had performed over 100 surgeries of this type, before treating me. He also provides many before and after photos with detailed explanations of the procedures and results on his website, as well as patient reviews. The website is modern and professional looking. I found some surgeons websites to look sketchy or outdated. Dr. Bartlett was also located near my home state, therefore I would not add to the expense with travel and hotel fees. The recommendation of my primary care physician in addition to Dr. Bartlett's credentials lead to me to book a consultation with him. Finding the building was easy, but finding the actual door was a little difficult, as it's tucked right in next to the door to a private condominium. The office was clean and comfortable, and the staff was wonderful. Very friendly and informative. The staff were very clear and concise about the financial costs and explaining them to me. They handled everything with my insurance for me and were very easy to work with when my insurance was being difficult. Dr. Bartlett saw me after a short wait. He has a reassuring and calming bedside manner. My first impression was that he could be trusted, and that he was excited about and loved his craft, which is always a great sign for me. I had a very good gut feeling. He did look slightly older than the photo on the website, I would not have noticed his age at all whatsoever if it wasn't for the 10 year or so difference between the photo on the website, so I would perhaps suggest that it be updated. Although I told Dr. Bartlett that I would rather have the type of procedure that he recommended, he ended up recommending the keyhole procedure saying I was an optimal candidate. My insurance did cover part of the expenses for surgery. I paid $6,200 up front as the surgeons fee, I was later reimbursed by my insurance for $2,335.16. And then I paid an additional $2,927.58 in hospital fees, pathology fees and anesthesia fees. So in total I paid $6792.42 out of pocket after insurance. Out of pocket costs were a little higher, but you absolutely get what you pay for, and I have no regrets. Your costs may be different than mine were, since each case is individual based on your body type and the procedure being done, different insurance policies can also be a factor. The surgery took about four and a half hours, and Dr. Bartlett explained afterwards that I was such a good candidate for a great result, that he had made the decision to spend extra time on the aesthetic part of the surgery. Again, his excitement and involvement was refreshing. During the follow up appointments, Dr. Bartlett took a quick look at my chest, and said that I was healing 10/10, the best results they could wish for. He did seem in a bit of a rush or distracted in the follow ups compared to the consultation, however he answered all my questions, and I was always attended to by the multiple kind and very informed registered nurses on his staff during every follow up. I am very pleased with my results. The scarring is solely around the areolas, so it will not be noticeable once they heal. And already, the contouring is so good, that I can go without a shirt, and I feel comfortable and no one notices. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Richard Bartlett to anyone looking to have this procedure done. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Bartlett and his staff, especially for anyone looking for a gender-confirmation surgery. I had FTN top surgery with him several months ago, and every part of the process has been great. The intake form asked about preferred pronouns, and I was never misgendered by the doctor or staff (pretty rare occurrence for they/them pronouns). The staff are very nice and have responded promptly to inquiries. From the initial consultation onward, I got the impression that Dr. Bartlett was a kind and capable person. He explained the procedure clearly and answered my questions in a straightforward way. At the hospital prior to the surgery, he was similarly clear and compassionate. The surgery itself went very well. I had no complications, and the healing process has gone smoothly. The results also look great--smooth incision lines (no crooked scars or dog-ears), very symmetrical, very natural appearance overall. Absolutely horrendous office with an amazingly rude staff apparently emulating an equally egotistical doctor with an amazing chip on his shoulder. Called them based on a referral from both another doctor AND my insurance company based on the need to have a modified male mastectomy; a harrowing experience for anyone but especially scary for a male where it is a less commonly performed procedure. Having had other procedures performed on my chest in the past and wanting this to be the last one and as attractive as possible once completed, I wanted a doctor who knew the male anatomy and was familiar with this procedure. Was summarily dismissed by an incredibly rude female at the desk who informed me that the doctor "does not do revision surgery". I tried to explain this wasn't revising a prior surgery but rather was the result of new growths discovered on my recent mammograms that were growing rapidly and causing concern given my family history of breast cancer and these growths. In response, I was told that the doctor doesn't perform "clean ups" and only works on untouched patients!!! What a horrendous response to someone facing this issue. I was in such disbelief that I decided to email the office in the hopes of reaching someone in a position of authority. I am now mildly deformed thanks to Dr Bartlett. He was very expensive, his demeanor indicated he doesn't care if he does a good job or not, and he did a bad job. The horrible thing about cosmetic surgery is that once they have their money, you have little recourse to make them actually deliver what they promised. In my case, I paid Dr Bartlett, approx 10k (for about an hour of surgery ), he did a bad job, and he takes no responsibility for his actions. I am a man born with gynecomastia. At one point I had a 32" waist (I'm 6'), a 6-pack, and about half of an A cup. I was teased as a child, wore baggy clothes to hide my chest, etc. I went to doctors to check for glandular disease, but I was within normal bounds. I just was unlucky in that my chest was my fattest part. Once I got a job out of college, I saved up and hired Dr Bartlett to perform a male breast reduction. His office was OK during the sales phase, but really showed no concern post-operation. I came in for a follow up visit and had concerns about the results and he dismissed me as quickly as he could, took no time to explain anything. He clearly didn't care one bit that he did a horrible job. Perhaps he's used to dealing with dissatisfied customers? Now, my nipples are horribly deformed. Once I removed the bandages, they were misshapen so that they really don't look like nipples anymore...which I fully blame on him. He reduced the fat in my chest, but not to the point where it looks good...just that it no longer looks like a woman's breast. Despite following his post-op orders as rigorously as a human can, I also got scarring to the point where they look even worse, which I don't fully blame on him. I can't go out without a shirt thanks to Dr Bartlett...so that aspect of my life hasn't changed. He didn't even do a great job sculpting my chest so I don't look great w/ a shirt on, either. However, I looked like a freak before and now look close enough to normal that no one notices...so it did change my life for the better overall. I am no longer insecure about my chest because no one ever sees me without a shirt, but I still have to hide at the beach. It's very obvious that I had the operation and it is also visibly obviously botched. My life doesn't suck thanks to Dr Bartlett. I just paid a small fortune for him to do a bad job. While I understand there are risks that things won't turn out, he behaved like an ass. Once he took my money, he didn't bother to even try to show concern or be helpful in the followup visit. He is undoubtedly obscenely wealthy thanks to folks like myself giving up huge sums of cash to have him treat us like garbage and perform his craft poorly. His arrogance, apathy, and lack of concern for his patients is atrocious, although I understand that's not rare among men in his profession. Once he has your money, he gives you the same dead-eyed unmotivated attitude you'd expect from the DMV desk (think Patty and Selma from the Simpsons) or the cashier at McDonalds does when they get your order wrong. I would tolerate his unprofessional behavior if he was talented. However, my one experience with him, he failed at his job pretty badly. In short, huge failure, I would never go back to him and I would recommend to anyone who will listen to avoid him. read more

To start off, his staff is amazing. The customer service I received really made this experience a pleasant one. I went to Dr. Bartlett for my FTM Top Surgery performed in June of this year. I had a keyhole incision around the areola with prime results. I had my consultation with him back in April of this year, and he expressed a small amount of concern about having a small amount of extra skin sagging because one of my breasts was a tiny bit larger/saggier than the other, and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that going ahead with the incisions around the areola would be fine. So a little over six weeks post-op I have a little bit of fold/a small skin fold I guess but it's nothing major or something to be upset over. It may even go down as the swelling retracts but it's not a huge deal. Dr. Bartlett said that it can be revised/'fixed' if desired in a few months but it's really up to me. Heads up that the small skin fold is not a surgeon error at all, and I'm not upset about it in any way. Because of the incisions I had, there is virtually no scarring. I'd be glad to show you a picture of my results if anybody is curious/messages me. Although my insurance (Harvard Pilgrim HMO) covered my surgery, I do have to admit that the total cost of my surgery, $9500, was a bit on the high side for most top surgeries. But I think that you get way you pay for with quality and care, and an overall good experience. After getting our reimbursement check from the provider, I think the total cost out of pocket for top surgery with insurance coverage will be about $2250, but I don't have the complete bill in front of me so I might be off by $100 or so. Still pretty good, though, for a surgery cost of $9500. But yeah, I have had absolutely no problems with his office and would highly recommend them for transgender surgical care. Dr. Bartlett and his staff are top-notch. My daughter had a rhino/septoplasty a year ago, and she looks beautiful - she had a severely deviated septum and her nose was pretty off-center. She has virtually no visible scarring and her confidence level has increased dramatically. Dr. Bartlett's pain-free approach is amazing - other practitioners and and patients should take notice. My daughter experienced very little, if any, pain. The swelling and bruising were minimal as well. We looked around quite a bit before we decided on Dr. Bartlett. He is highly skilled, and my daughter found him to be very comforting - it was her first (and hopefully last) surgery and she (and yes, me) were nervous. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Bartlett and the staff at his practice in Brookline. I am a 31 transgender man who sought top surgery (pre-T) in the spring of 2012. Prior to deciding on Dr. B, I researched all of my other options--mostly financially because I really had to scrape the money together to make the surgery happen. In weighing out my options to travel to FL or CA vs staying local (I'm from Maine), the prices were comparable. So then I really tried to research outcomes When I first heard of Dr. B, I could only find one youtube video and no other strong references via transbucket or other online information sites for FTMs. Although the informational phone session proved encouraging, I visited his website and felt like maybe Dr. B was out of touch with the trans community, or not actually advertising for folks like myself. My partner reminded me that he is a cosmetics/plastics surgeon and that his website caters to a different audience and is not specifically oriented to a niche community of hip, exciting trans people...it's a broad generalization, but you get it. Good point. I decided to make the leap and have a consultation. The office was immaculate, professional, and not what I was expecting (after spending over an hour on the website). Staff was exceptional; they asked all the right questions, and followed through respectfully. I really liked Dr' B's energy and elected to have my surgery with him at Tufts Medical, but I also liked that most folks have the option of undergoing surgery privately, in-house, in his own OR (for the same price). I had keyhole surgery completed with a nipple graft, and I could not be happier with my results (and I'm picky!). Dr. Bartlett was a total pro--at bedside and as a surgical artist. My chest looks....just like it's supposed to. A lot of other surgeons will do the surgery in 1-2 hours; Dr. B will do it in 4-5 because he will take his time to consider All The Things: body type, age, hormone therapy (or not), (a)symmetry, sag/skin quality, everything. He has a way of aesthetically maximizing one's gain. I thought maybe my experience had been abnormally good, but after watching my friend get the very same treatment, have a different procedure for the same issue and have a friggen AMAZING result (we're hoping to do a vlog soon to show/discuss it), AND have it all happen Right Here In Boston, I'm blown away. The bottom line is a process that each one of us researches and reaches in our own way. If someone hears something good, chances are, someone else will feel inclined to check it out. Fact of the matter is, safety and comfort is everything; even if a less-skilled surgeon makes a trans person feel comfortable and safe, the chance of that person seeking service from them is pretty good. Dr. Bartlett is not only a highly skilled artist, but he and his staff definitely create a safe experience. I went to see doctor bartlett for a consult and even went back for a second consult to go over what pictures would look like. I unfortunately had poor results with Dr. Bartlett. In August 2010 I had otoplasty (ear pinning) to correct an asymmetry in my right ear, caused by a malformed anti-helical fold, making right ear stick out about 50-60% further than my left ear. Dr. Bartlett performed otoplasty on both ears in order to ensure the best possible match and outcome following surgery. However, following the procedure the asymmetry persisted. Both ears were tucked closer to the head, but the right ear continued to stick out 60% more on the right than the left (left ear 15mm, right ear 25mm). Unhappy with the results, I requested a further correction, which was done six months later. Following that surgery there was no measurable difference, the right ear still protruded in an unnatural way. Dr. Bartlett's response was that it was a 'good' result, and that nothing more could be done. I went to Mass Eye and Ear, as well as my PCP, to get a second opinion and both said my right ear protruded far more than the normal population. The Dr. at Mass eye and Ear also offered to do a third surgery to fix the problem (I would also suggest anyone interested in facial surgery consult there, their prices are also quite reasonable). So now I'm left almost one year after the original surgery, still insecure about the right ear, and paying for a second surgery that should have been corrected the first time. Dr. Bartlett offered no partial refund for his work - with a very subjective 'I think it looks fine' response even in light of the other surgeons measurements. In addition to the poor results, there was also a lack of general concern for me as a patient throughout the process. I never received a check-in following surgery either the first or second time. I sent Dr. Bartlett and his staff appreciation emails after both procedures thanking them for their time and received no response (with the exception of his assistant to whom I wrote a personal thank you card, she was wonderful across the board). I also got vague answers to direct questions such as 'what's the normal left vs. right ear difference in the average population?'. Dr. Bartlett came recommended by a med school friend so it's possible I'm the exception rather than the rule, but a surgeon should be measured by how they respond to procedures that don't go well in the cosmetics field, and my experience on that end has been disappointing. I would suggest at least consulting with some of the highly rated doctors at Brighams or Mass Eye/Ear for facial procedures [and I'll write the appropriate review there following my third surgery ]. read more

My surgery (bilateral mastectomy, nipple-sparing/graft) was on December 3, 2015. The process of getting the referral and paperwork settled took from late September through early November due to a couple of paperwork SNAFUs on the part of Dr. Bartlett's staff (sent my pre-authorization to the wrong insurance company; misplaced my consent form, which necessitated signing again at the last minute; etc.), but I cannot fault them for kindness or willingness to rectify errors; they were absolutely fantastic. As for the surgery itself, I cannot possibly tell you what a conscientious and wonderful team Dr. Bartlett works with at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital. I also love Dr. Richard Bartlett. I have worked with Dr. Bartlett for 16 years as his Nurse Practitioner at Children's Hospital Boston and in his private Plastic/Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery practice in Brookline. I have stayed with Dr. Bartlett this long for several reasons, the highlights being his integrity, perfectionism and outstanding surgical skill. I have had several surgical procedures from Dr. Bartlett including: upper eyelids, chin liposuction and lesion removal. I am also very pleased in the use of Botox to my frown line between my brows and my crow's feet which have kept the wrinkles in that area very faint and stable instead of deep and progressing with age. I appreciate that he is well-known for his cosmetic surgery results, as well as his work with children with craniofacial abnormalities and those needing reconstructive procedures. Indeed, many of Dr. Bartlett's patients are referred to him from other regional plastic surgeons whose patients need his help. I refer my family, friends, colleagues, neighbors and more to Dr. Bartlett and am pleased when I hear back about how much they like him, his personality, his bedside manner and his commitment to helping them reach their goals with plastic surgery. I also like that Dr. Bartlett is conservative in the way he approaches cosmetic procedures. He likes his patients to look "refreshed", but not overdone. He puts in breast implants that are proportionate to a woman's body frame and does not put in 1000cc or 1 litre implants into patients as you might see on the West Coast. Dr. Bartlett is also a devoted family man with wife Dorothy, who also works at the office and four grown children and is grounded to the earth by his dedication to his family. His employees are very committed to making his practice run like a well-oiled machine to ensure that the patients who are being cared for by him receive all of the comforts needed throughout the process of having a first appointment for an evaluation and information gathering to follow-up appointments after the operation has been completed. Dr. Bartlett is also known throughout Boston and by his peers as having expertise in facial surgeries, eyelids and nose surgery because of his advanced credentials in Craniofacial Procedures. I had a consultation with this office about a month ago. I expressed to the assistant and Dr. Bartlett that this was my 2nd consultation and spoke clearly on the reason why I was seeing him on that day versus any other location. Long story short, this office kept a poor record of my consultation which caused confusion on their end and instead of trying to accommodate me, they required that we start over with a new consultation. They were ill-prepared and unaccommodating. I let the assistant know that I would not return and will find someone new. read more

This dr. Is incredibly deceptive. I understand he has pleased some patients and that is very lucky for them because he is ruthless when it comes to getting your money. He will say whatever necessary to gain your trust and then cause disfigurement and behave like its nothing- like its your fault when the bandages come off and you realize you've been mutilated by him. I even gave him the benefit of doubt while waiting in agony for six months before I judged but it never "healed". I even still thought he was a normal human being until at my six month follow up I had the courage to say this looks bad and at one point he doubled over on his little stool and turned red in the face and had a tantrum and looked at me with pupils the size of pin holes and said- how dare you. He also gets his assistant to lie for him. His behavior immediately after the procedure obviously indicated he was afraid to get sued and that was terrifying to me. What he has done to my life at times seems irreparable. His actions are beyond evil. I like to believe he can't do things like this to people without suffering the consequences at some point. read more

Dr. Bartlett is a very nice and understanding person and his office staff are extremely helpful and organized. He also uses digital imaging to show you what results he foresees, and to ensure that patients are pleased with the results that he has projected (which is extremely rare in this area, for some reason). I had a nasal surgery a little while back and although the results were not over-done or unnatural (which is a rarity for most doctors), I did not get 100% of my desired look, which could be the result of any number of reasons. My septum was beautifully fixed, my nose was given a very natural look, and although I will be getting a second surgery to achieve the desired results that I originally wanted, Dr. Bartlett really did do a great job. I realized after the surgery that a minor change was not all that I really wanted, but if you are looking for natural looking subtle changes, he is a great match for you. His bedside manner is amazing and he seems to care equally about his patients both before and after surgery. read more

august 2013, i had a breast reduction with dr.bartlett. great experience and life changing for me. my breasts were large for my build. i jog 3 miles a few times and wweek and breast size was not making this an easy task despite sports bras. of course, even worse with the monthly period. a very close friend of mine works with dr.bartlett and has seen multiple surgeries...noticed he was a perfectionist and took as much time as needed with patients and never rushed in or out of the oper.room. results were good. i got out of surgery, no drains. incisions healed well. never took tylenol never mind the prescribed pain meds i got. i feared nausea postop, never got that as he was aware and gave all the necess.nause medication during fthe case and before i woke up. i went from a full d cup to an easy b. life is good. insurance covered it. so.....needless to say, i highly recommend this dr.for any plastic or reconstructive surgeries needed. :) good luck read more
