I needed to get my engagement ring appraised for insurance reasons and was told by where we got my ring (Emily Warden) to come to Richmond Jewelers. I brought it in and they told me it would take about a week and they were done appraising it in about a day. I think it helped that I had all the paperwork that mentioned what kind of stones and metals were used in my ring. When I brought the ring in, I was helped immediately and given a yellow piece of paper to bring in when I returned. They asked for my full legal name and address. They gave me a call when they were done. When I returned, I showed the slip, got my ring back, and an appraisal sheet. They had me review the sheet to make sure everything was written correctly before getting the Appraiser's signature. This cost me $90, which after some research seemed to be the cheapest and most affordable cost for an engagement ring appraisal. It's a tiny shop with Carytown style parallel parking out front. The only downside about this shop is that it smells like cigarettes, but I was in and out of there so quickly this didn't affect my experience. Plus I got great service! They didn't seem to care about the stones (I know one stone was a sapphire) because it cost more to clean and refine the stone vs buying it new. Five star service! I was mortified when I rammed my engagement ring into a cabinet at work. I looked down and my prong was bent waaay back. I freaked (and the jumped on Yelp to find help!). I work in Carytown so this literally could not have been more convenient! I bent my ring on a Monday and walked in with it Tuesday. Mike bent the prong back in a matter of SECONDS at no charge. I had been meaning to get my rings cleaned for months but just hadn't gotten around to it. I had Mike clean and inspect them and picked them up the very next day. Ring cleaning/inspection/tightening of stones is a fair $25 per ring. I'm sooo grateful I didn't have to go any longer without my rings and was given some great advice about soldering the rings together which I'm going to consider. read more

One of my friends recently got engaged and went here to get her ring - she came back and told me about her experience and I decided to give Mike a try as well for my own engagement ring. I could not have been happier with my experience. The storefront itself is very unassuming and humble. Inside the store is the same. Everything you see is hiding a secret though: Mike is the best in the business. He *actively* listens to you and validates your thoughts on such a huge purchase. Then he'll inform and educate you on your options, based on a budget. This was my favorite part: I learned so much, so quickly, in such a memorable way. 12K white gold is much more malleable than platinum, and more affordable too, for example. Wooden rings and trendier metals are extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to resize. Etc. I never felt pressured by Mike. Truly an incredible guy and the rings we ended up getting were absolutely worth every penny. I have suggested to my other newly engaged friends (I guess it's that time in my life!) that they only need to talk to Mike. This man saved my wedding day. Cannot recommend enough! He was the only one in town who was able to remove a diamond infinity band, and I mean the only one. He resized the infinity band, for a different finger and with a nice BIG gap that can be cut through if needed, and it is gorgeous!! I would and have recommended him to everyone I've met. The company my fiance bought my engagement ring from was going to take 2-3 weeks and have to send it away to have it resized - no way I was giving my ring up for that long. I called Mike based on the great reviews here (thank Yelpers!) and went to see him that night. He resized my ring within 30 minutes. It's the simple things that a lot of places take for granted. Mike at Richmond Jewelers remembers that. We had to have a watch battery replaced and while he was doing so, I asked him to check a loose clasp on the watch. In less than 5 minutes, he was done with the replacement and repair. He could have charged us for the repair but only charged us the $12 for the battery (1 year warranty).
