I hired this company to install some additions underground drainage pipes in my backyard right after Hurricane Harvey. Although the work appears to be done correctly, the price set was high at $5000. Because I did not compare his price to others before starting the work as the work was scheduled right after Hurricane Harvey and I felt that it would be a long wait if I took the time to do so, I won't know how high. After starting the work, his crew discovered a problem with the older drainage system that required a replacement pipe to be installed so that he could tie into it - the existing pipe was not lined up properly to allow proper flow-- so he came back to me asking for $1600 more. Since we were already in the middle of the work, I had little choice but to allow the increase. And at that point, he could basically set whatever price he wanted as he knew I didn't have a whole of options. I felt taken advantage of at this point. His comment was that I should take his offer because if he came back later the price would be even higher. When the work was finished, I discovered that he ripped out the plants all along the beds in the back of my house and he left bare soil there as well as where he had laid some pipe. What had a little grass and some plants and some shrubs now had nothing but dirt which will create a muddy mess when there is rainfall. I asked him if he was going to put some sod there or if he was going to just leave it that way, and his reply was "that's landscaping and that's not included." !!! So he fails to mention that he's going to rip out my plants and throw them out and leave me with bare earth and dirt which will create a muddy mess after a rainfall, and making it right will cost more. He offered to quote me an additional amount to add grass. I said no thanks. I did ask him why he failed to mention that he would be ripping out my plants and throwing them out and leaving me with nothing - he had no answer for that. I paid him VERY WELL and in my view I paid him much more than anyone else would have charged and he wouldn't even make it right for his failure to communicate. I will NOT be using him again. This guy has no interest in customer satisfaction and goodwill and fails to communicate. A little sod would have been such a small price for him to pay for his omission but evidently leaving a customer with a feeling of let down and manipulation so he can move on and cash the check was more important. I thought about paying him less than agreed since he failed to communicate - but I paid him the whole thing in full. He knew I was upset but didn't give a damn. Oh, and he talked about his clients in the Memorial area as his "high end" clients which felt insulting. UPDATE, 1 month later: when my perfectly functioning sprinkler system had a huge leak right where this crew had been digging and an electrical issue because of wiring that had been destroyed, I contacted the owner of Richter's Services, Steve Richter. He tells me that yes, they had relocated one of the pipes for the sprinkler system and may have damaged it. I am pretty angry that he never mentioned this until now. When I asked him to pay for the repairs of the damage he caused - and now I find out damage he knew about upfront but didn't tell me - he made a snarky remark and said he wouldn't without coming back to see if they could fix it themselves first. Problem is - I don't want this guy or his crew back on my property. No thanks, I do not trust them. read more
