I needed to pick up a Valentine treat for my husband and heard about this place last month. Something came up where I would not make it to another bakery in time before they closed. I asked a couple of people if they had tried it, but neither of them had. Yelpers had great reviews of this bakery, so I decided to give them a try. This bakery is located off Inverness Parkway on 280, a couple of doors down from Chuck-E-Cheese and in the same shopping area as Aldi and Full Moon. When I walked in, I was greeted by delicious smells and a friendly smile. She asked me what I needed and I told her that I was there for cupcakes. She said she had one 4-pack left, unless I wanted different flavors. I ended up choosing my own cupcakes, and settled on Cookies and Cream, Caramel, Coconut, and Italian Cream. I went to the register to check out and I saw the cinnamon rolls, looking absolutely decadent. I decided to wait for another time to get cinnamon rolls, so I will definitely be back! My husband had the cookies and cream cupcake, and I had the coconut cupcake. Talk about amazing! The cupcake was pillowy soft and so flavorful. The icing was not too sweet like you would find on lots of other places. It was excellent. We still have two other cupcakes to try, and we are excited about them. We were eating at Pho Place (which has fabulous Pho). When we finished, my nieces birthday was in a few days so I saw the bakery a few doors down. We went in and I ordered a carrot cake cupcake, and my niece ordered a cake with strawberry, vanilla and Key-lime. The bakery items were a very fresh and in the cake she said there was fresh vanilla beans, fresh strawberries, and fresh lime. She said it was fabulous. My carrot cake was soft fresh and delicious with the cream cheese, frosting, and nuts on top. I would highly recommend this place. Everything was wonderful authentic and fresh. read more

Cute little bakery. Came in near closing time so there wasn't a ton of stuff. Not sure if there is a lot more in the morning since this was my first time here. I decided to get the four remaining scones to take home. The scones were a nice size and had glazed icing over them. I forgot to take a picture but they looked really good. The price was reasonable too. Once at home, we got to try them and they were perfect. They were really really good. Hope I get a chance to get back here again to get more and to try something else. I was so sad when the bakery that was formerly in this location closed. So I was super excited to see something new when we were in the area for an appointment. I am a sucker for a local bakery! I decided to get several things: a slice of chocolate pie for the spouse, some petit fours for the kids, a sugar cookie because I wanted a little snack, and a key lime cupcake, because that cookie would be gone by the time everyone else got to eat their goodies. Someone had just been telling me about getting something at the nearby hospital that had been catered/ordered from here, and they had good things to say. The cookie was good. While it was decorated with sanding sugar, the icing was not too sugary in its consistency. The rest of the family gave thumbs up, too. The petit fours were as good or better than the Homewood bakery's where I first introduced the kids to them. The key lime cupcake was good, though in my personal preference, I found the cupcake color to be a little more bluish-green than yellowish green than I'd prefer. HOW IS THIS PLACE NOT MORE WELL KNOWN??? My husband likes chocolate cupcakes, and since we moved here he had slowly has tried them from grocery chains and bakeries all over the Birmingham area. On a whim, I decided to stop at Rickey J's to pick up a couple. Instead I went home with chocolate, strawberry, and key lime cupcakes, as well as a couple of cookies. First of all, their prices are terrific, which is saying something. AND THE BAKED GOODS I GOT WERE SO GOOD. Everything was fantastic, and my husband said the chocolates cupcakes were among the best he's ever had- certainly the best in the area. He is now obsessed with their chocolate chip cookies. I was back within a week to pick up more, which is definitely out of the norm. The second time I also picked up coconut, vanilla, and chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Again, everything was wonderful. Whether you're in the Bham area for a visit or you live here, it'd be a shame if you missed out on Rickey J's! read more

My visit to Rickey Js was a spur of the moment. I stopped at bank and as I walked out my radar saw a sign that said bakery. Quickly checked the Yelp reviews and decided it was worth a stop. I lucked out with parking and got a space right at the door. Woohoo! Ok yes I probably should have parked further away to walk off some calories in anticipation. But lately safety and awareness have become a priority for me. When I walked in the door my smeller knew I had made a good choice. It smelled delicious! I was greeted by a lovely lady who helped me make some choices. I tend to get overwhelmed when there are many choices. Everything looked good. I left with a cinnamon roll, carrot raisin muffin, and an eclair. Mom was excited when I got home. We shared the cinnamon roll. It was moist and there was no skimping on the icing. I loved the hint of almond flavoring. Mom had been bugging me for an eclair and she loved this one. The filling is light unlike most eclairs that have more of a pudding-like filling. The pastry is moist and light. It took two days to get to the muffin but oh my it was good. Great flavor, moist, lots of raisins, and the walnuts on top added a nice little crunch for this "lady of crunch". Again Mom and I shared. Half was even plenty for me. I'll be stopping there again whenever I'm in the area. read more

A hidden gem! I happened to stop in on a whim when my husband called me quick to pick up something for his friend's birthday. I spoke with one of the owners who was incredibly friendly, helpful and professional. The shop is spotless and has a great variety of items to choose from. I ended up selecting vanilla, Key lime, and carrot cake cupcakes to try a few options. They were priced very fairly. There was something very warm and genuine about the shop. I even considered going to a grocery store, but did some online research for a good local bakery and saw reviews for Rickey J's. The reviewers are spot on. Again, I got cupcakes to sample, and the owner/baker was so nice & helpful. She even gave me a free slice of cake to help me decide. I chose the key lime cake for the party & it was a huge hit... very flavorful, really moist, & great texture all around. The guests wanted to know where I got the cake.
