I work in downtown Birmingham and this location in the Financial Center is one of our favorite places for lunch. My coworker and I ate here Thursday, 02/01/24 for lunch. Soon as you walk in, you see packaged desserts in both full cakes and slices. They had several King Cakes, so we immediately decided to split a slice. Decided that first before what we're actually eating. #priorities Last time I ate here, I got the Chicken Quesadilla and it was so good. But a couple of my coworkers got the Marilyn Monroe, a sandwich with "turkey, pepperoni, mozzarella & marinara sauce on cheddar bread". So I went with that this time, same as my coworker. Concept here is that you order at the counter, they give you a number to display on your table, then another server will bring your order. Service was fast. The sandwich looked a bit small at first, but it was stacked with turkey and pepperoni, so the portion size was actually just right. It comes with marinara sauce on the side for dipping, which is good, because it keeps the sandwich from being too messy, but it was a bit odd because it was cold, in combination with the warm sandwich. I kinda wish the sauce had been warmer. It comes with a bag of chips and your choice of another side, which I chose fruit. I don't care for melon, so I picked around that and ate the grapes out. Next time I might get another side. And finally... it was King Cake time. We had picked a cream cheese slice and it was SO good. Had a cinnamon taste mixed in, but to be fair, this was my first King Cake so I actually have no idea what to compare it to. This dessert made me so happy. I came in during a busy time but the place still looked clean and orderly. There were no spills or crumbs on the floor, which says a lot. I tried their almond tart and it was delicate, buttery, and had a perfect crunch. The filling was smooth and tasted fresh. I watched the staff change gloves before handling new orders. I came here to get a quick slice of cake on my birthday as I've heard very good things about Edgars cake. When I walked in and looked at their selection there was quite a lot of flavors to choose from (red velvet, carrot cake, vanilla, chocolate, German chocolate, etc) but they also have tons of healthy breakfast options and pastries as well (the incredibly delicious looking orange rolls and sticky buns will have me coming back to try them). The service: The lady at the counter was very sweet and even gave me my "Jazzy Java" coffee free which was a blend with pecans/honey/cinnamon. The food: I choose a slice of German Chocolate cake and it was extremely filling and decadent. I dont have anything bad to say. I really enjoyed the icing it had on it. This location is a wonderful option for a quick bite and coffee. My latte was prepared with quickly and the portion was generous for a small. There was minimal wait for our food to arrive. The sandwich was lightly toasted and the perfect size for a filling breakfast. The potato salad was yummy with large slices of potatoes which was nice. Yum! I've always loved Edgar's Bakery and for years have only ever had their delicious cakes. I finally tried some of their deli items this last week. They do a great job! I had their pimento cheese sandwich and their pimento cheese is almost as good as I make them! They also put it on sourdough bread. Game changer! I also tried their fruit and chips, which were good as well. For dessert, I had one of their chocolate chip cookies. One of the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had, but of course they are a bakery so I'm not too surprised how delicious it was! It's best to preorder your cake but sometimes you can just pop in and they will have one available. They will write what you want on the cake on the spot free of charge. The service has always been prompt and friendly. There are lots of other cake and cupcakes flavors as well as other baked goods. The pound cakes are a delicious option. They come in various flavors. Stopped by here on a whim while driving through town and was super surprised and pleased! The staff was incredibly nice and welcoming. They told us that Edgar's is known for their cakes, especially strawberry so naturally I was sold. Between the strawberry cake and the orange roll I can't decide which one is better. The cake had icing to die for, and I'm not usually an icing fan, but the orange roll? It had little coconut shavings in the middle which turnt the flavor wayyy up! (I even mixed the two pastries together which was a total game changer, try it.) Other than pastries I had the cheddar biscuit with egg and sausage. When they say cheddar biscuit they aren't messing around. It was a perfectly warm and delicious breakfast sandwich and was completed by a nice blend of their Christmas and Regular coffee. Stuck downtown for jury duty so I thought I'd treat myself to a nice lunch. Walked in and they were busy but not more than any other place at noon downtown. Placed my order and had a seat. I love the size of this restaurant and the fact that there were outlets at the big tables. It was very clean and had a nice decor. However- the wait was unbelievable. I waited 35 minutes to get my food and my friend was another ten after that and she had to ask for her food. The group next to us had ordered well before us and got their food fifteen minutes later. They had one lady serving the whole restaurant. I don't blame her at all but it seems like they were incredibly short staffed. I ordered the "T" sandwich which was turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a sweet bread. The food was great and is definitely order it again but I hope todays service was just a fluke. read more

I was pretty underwhelmed by my experience at this place sadly. I was excited because they had a breakfast wrap but ended up being disappointed. I asked if I could get the bacon breakfast wrap with the breakfast potatoes added into the wrap -- sure thing, they say. The wrap then comes out to our table and first off, looks like it was thrown onto the plate. There were pieces of bacon that had fallen out (I'm assuming) and were left on the plate, and the wrap was on the edge of the plate looking a little precarious. Maybe this was an attempt at plating, but it looked really thrown together to me. I also got the breakfast potatoes... on the side. I would've asked for them to correct it, but after trying one of the potatoes I was alright with it not being in the wrap. They were pretty hard like they hadn't been cooked all the way, so I was okay just eating the wrap. The wrap, itself, had SO much cheese in it. This might be a bonus for some people but really not for me. I realize that cheesiness is personal preference, but I always trust a place won't go the extra-cheese-route unless they note it on the menu. I wish they would have so I could have asked for easy on the cheese or no cheese (since the cheddar has a strong flavor). Overall, the service was nice and the interior was nice. I enjoyed the pastry samples. But I probably would just stick to the baked goods/coffee if I came back here. read more

First of all, let me say I've been going over in my mind what type of shindig I could plan just to use this new location. I think it's so posh and adorable! And the patio is quaint and intimate. I'm sure you already know how famous and delicious their strawberry cake is, so I'll review something else. I've tried their quesadilla here, and it's rather yummy. It's a nice serving size and it comes with your choice of a side, which I always select the fruit salad. That's the pro side. The con: I've ordered a strawberry floral birthday cake from this location on two separate occasions. The first time I got what I ordered. The 2nd time, I did not. The 2nd time I received only a strawberry cake with white writing on it. Huge difference as you can see in the pictures. I wasn't able to pick the cake up personally, so a friend did it for me. After I checked it out and saw that it wasn't correct, I immediately called them. To make this short, after being asked to drive to PELHAM just so that store could fix the problem(downtown location was getting ready to close) and after telling the lady on the phone I wasn't doing that, she offered a $10 gift card or a $10 refund on the wrong cake. While I do truly appreciate the lady trying to help, a $10 gift card was not going to fix my cake. Sorry. What has disappointed me recently is during this time of year during Fall and Winter holidays 2022 they have decided to start closing at 4:00pm on weekdays. I usually only pick up a nice salad for lunch here since it's a convenient walk from the job. My favorite is the Cobb salad which is always really fresh and filling. I've also tried the Crabcake salad and it was pretty awesome as well. The service is always really fast and friendly no matter who is over the counter. Also, all of my small requests are always honored and remembered which is a big deal for me. I've recently caught on to how great their breakfast is and life is much better for it. My last breakfast was the Southwest omelette adding spinach and mushroom and it is the best one I've had in a very long time. I just would have liked a little more salsa but it was outstanding and enough to share with a coworker. Their homestyle potatoes as a side should not be overlooked either. I work across the street and love a more healthy option being in walking distance. So with that being said... Love the food but not a fan of the service (breakfast time seems to be the worst). Just not the friendliest. They have messed up my order on more than 1 occasion and seemed to get aggravated that I didn't just say " ok, it's fine. I'll eat it". When you HATE EGG... it's just not an option to have it on my sandwich. If you go, go during lunch time. Quesadilla is great! Now mind you, the website showed these delicious golden fluffy pancakes - and I absolutely love pancakes - so I decided to give them a try. I mean it's pancakes - how hard is it to make golden fluffy pancakes? Well apparently it's not something they're good at because they were very thin - almost like crepes and the bottom overcooked to being almost burnt. Jury duty is never fun, but the highlight is always lunch! This is walking distance from the courthouse and really nice. The dining area is very clean and the service is prompt and friendly. I dined outside as it was a beautiful day and the patio area has umbrellas for shade. I ordered a fried green tomato BLT. It was delicious!! The bacon was crispy, the tomato was fresh and the sauce had a little kick to it! It was definitely a great experience. My love of Edgar's is pretty long time - way back to my high school days! Needless to say I was thrilled when this location opened. I have had tons of items on the menu but my favorites are the Marilyn Monroe (essentially a pizza sandwich on swirly cheddar bread) and the grown up grilled cheese (pimento cheese with bacon.). The only thing I don't like that I have tried is the house chips - maybe too spice-doused but always make me feel bleh. I always sub them for another side instead! Every single one of their homemade treats is to die for! I recommend the cinnamon or orange rolls, red velvet or strawberry cake, red velvet cheese cake bars, ok I am admitting I've tried too much! I'm a big fan of Edgar's bakery downtown for lunch. They have a great array of sandwhich a and entrees prefect for the lunch crowd. There meals are not to heavy, not to light they're just right. I got the new chicken melt. It was scrumptious. A great peice of chicken, with the perfect balance of avocado and peppers. A delicious sauce and the bread was grilled to perfection. The bread was also infused with peppers giving it that X factor. There is plenty of seating however it can become crowded so just be aware. There is outdoor and indoor seating which is perfect those those sunny dayzzz or to get some fresh air on your lunch break. They also do to go perfect for the busy bee in the office. This place is very uneven. I've had some food that wasn't so good and some food that was decent here. However, that's where it stops - I don't really think I'd go so far as to say I have had anything good here. I'll start with the positive. The lines can get long and they do a great job of serving people quickly. They also have killer outdoor patio which is perfect for dining outside on some of these lovely spring days we've been having here in town. I'm not a sweets person. There, I said it, so I won't hold that against them. I'll just say the strawberry cake and the chocolate chip cookies taste like something you'd make from a prepared mix or get out a of a frozen food section to cook yourself. The veggie sandwich was very bland. Salt helped a little, but it was still lacking flavor. The Cranapple Turkey sandwich was just disappointing. I suppose the roasted turkey lacked flavor - a smoked turkey may have helped. The cranberry walnut bread was dense and cold. The bacon lacked flavor. The apple butter was a star but somehow the sandwich still manged to be bland. This fact that mediocrity just won't do downtown is exacerbated by the existence of "Brick and Tin" a few blocks away. They do a smoked turkey sandwich on a light airy wheat bread with a cranberry mayo sauce that kicks this sandwiches ass. It's not even close. I've also tried the egg salad here. The egg salad was dry. I'm talking arid - It's literally almost like they mashed up a hard boiled egg with a fork and forgot to add anything to bind it together. On a bright note my boss reported that she really enjoyed a ham and turkey sandwich from this location. However with Brick and Tin in the area - along with two other sandwich shops - I just don't see myself going back to verify this claim. read more

I wasn't crazy about my lunch here. Maybe it was what I ordered. Visiting the area for a work meeting and broke out for lunch. It was quite busy so thought it would be a good spot. I ordered the avocado chicken wrap, while others ordered other things. My wrap was pieces of chicken with lettuce and a side of ranch. There was no avocado or much else to it. The chips were half crisp and others chewy. The chips that were crispy were very good! The chicken quesadilla looked delicious and wish I had ordered that. The flavored pound cake was very good. We had a variety at the table and it seemed to go over pretty well with the group. Overall, this place is great but they have a pretty large menu to go back and get something else. The service was great. Everyone was friendly and the food didn't take long to come out, even with the high traffic. If I could I'd rank this place as a 3-1/2 star. I ate here with a friend this weekend and it was delicious! I ordered the challah french toast, a side of bacon, and a cup of coffee. Shortly after ordering, an employee came to inform me that they only had two pieces of challah left. I let her know that was fine with me. She then insisted I order something else, free of charge, to go along with my meal. I told her that fruit would be nice. She was so nice about it and the food was wonderful!
