Visited for lunch on 12/21/2023. Ordered the two-meat plate of brisket and ribs with sides of cheesy potatoes and baked beans. The brisket was weirdly a combo of a couple of slices and chopped/shredded. The sliced was sort of moist but the chopped was dry. Cheesy potatoes were definitely cheesy and tasted okay. Baked beans had a really good smoked/bbq flavor. The ribs were tender and tasted pretty good. Their sauce was good too. The banana pudding was pretty good with sliced bananas and full nilla wafers. It was worth a try but I don't think I'll be returning. There are more "my kind of meats" and closer to me BBQ joints but others might like Rick's. I ordered over the phone, first time trying it out. I've seen it many times. Gentleman took my order and said my order would be ready in 15 minutes. I glanced at the sides since it was a cafeteria style, ensuring did look amazing. I ordered the baked potatoe with brisket and a rib basket. I have to say I enjoyed the food very much, the potataoe was huge and delicious. The ribs were on point, tender and not too smoky. The service was good, the ladies and fellas that were in front. I had a great time at Rick's. We went because we heard great things about the place from some locals. And by locals, I mean businessmen/working professionals in the area- this restaurant is smack dab in the middle of an industrial complex in Garland. When we walked in, the place was semi-packed with a line of people getting food to go and others wanting to dine in. That should tell you how popular this place is despite the lack of reviews. I think that might have to do with the fact that most of the customers appeared to be over the age of 60 or were eating during their work lunch break at one of the several business nearby (not the typical foodie reviewer crowd). Let me start by saying I didn't get to try many of the BBQ meats and I don't usually give 5 stars to a BBQ joint if I haven't tried their smokehouse meats. But here's to supporting our local businesses! I do plan on going back trying the meats out, but I really enjoyed my experience even without them. The mac and cheese was amazing- I wish they put a few more macaroni in the cheese sauce as the ratio is a bit off with more cheese sauce than noodles but wasn't watery by any means. The cheesy potatoes were cooked perfectly and have that "stick to your insides" quality that you want when you want a hug from the inside. I completely understand why they're the popular sides. I also got to try a piece of my friend's plate who got sausage and chicken breast meats. Both were really good. Next time, I'd like to try their stuffed baked potato with brisket meat. Also want to try their peach cobbler and banana pudding, oh and their potato salad... and their coleslaw. Really the combinations are many and I will be going back to try more. Amazing portion sizes...I always get at least 3 meals out of a 3 meat plate or catfish meal. And they are the most reasonably priced bbq joint by far. However, their lower prices in no way mean lower quality or quantity. Super fresh vegetables too. And the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. You won't be disappointed. read more

Honest review here. First of all let me give the reason for my 1 star. Dining area was clean and the pickles were good. Now, the food. Ordered two item combo plate with ribs and brisket, grabbed my tray and slid down to the sides. I went with the beans and fried okra. Slid down further to deserts (pass on that), grabbed some pickles, and paid the man $15 bucks which I'm not complaining about ... at that moment. Sat down and was immediately hit with a raw meat smell. Disregarded that smell and told my Nose to shut up I'm eating the damn food because I was hungry. Drove the fork into the brisket and although I put their house BBQ sauce on it, it just made it worse. Brisket had zero evidence it was BBQ. To be honest I was really skeptical if it was a bottom roast or something that had been charred and cooked in an oven. It didn't have a texture like brisket. Anyhow, moved on the beans. Cold. That was a fast one bite test. Moved on to the pickles. Awesome. Took a bite of Texas toast. Well. It was toast. Moved on the okra and it was .... yup fried okra. Crossed my fingers and took a bite of the ribs. As I picked it up I got a whiff of that faint raw meat smell but... I took a bite anyways. Oven baked ribs at best. Color and texture of meat didn't not show evidence of BBQ. Hell. The place didn't even smell like BBQ. Sorry Rick. The food needs some work unless that is the standard. I guess I'll just get some Bucees and call it a day. Not disappointed because I have never ate at this establishment so this is just an honest first bite review. Small old bbq joint on jupiter and miller. When I walked in the first thing I saw was how old the place looked. Like not even close to being somewhat formal. You walk up to the front and order from there. There are some sides but not all were the usual stuff. They did have mashed potato and baked beans. I ordered the $8 brisket sandwich combo with fries and sweet tea. The brisket was tender and nicely cooked. The sandwich comes with a 1/4 lb of your choice of meat. Pretty filling for lunch. The fries were the crinkle cuts and came out fresh. The drinks were free refills so thats good. I noticed a lot of the customers ate the baked potato. Like I said this place is not a formal dining restaurant. You'll see the deer heads off the wall. The antique tables and chairs. Old western themed deco but friendly service. Quick BBQ place across the street that helps Raytheon employees gain weight. It's cafeteria style, so just go down the line and pick what you want. I like the brisket sandwich here. Some of the sides don't look as desirable as some of the others, so you're gonna have to be the judge of that. Definitely inexpensive, and probably a place I'll visit again. read more

Holy Crap!!! Where do they get potatoes this big??!?? I swear... my baked potato was as big as my head (which incidentally, is rather large and gourd-like). Once again, I was drawn to this particular menu selection because of the outrageously bad for me items included in the toppings (how am I to resist such temptation?)... I'm starting to believe this excess is standard in Texas. So on top of my freakishly large spud were the following heart cloggers: butter and sour cream (what looked like an ice cream scoop of each), cheese, bacon, 1/4# of chopped up bbq beef... and a giant ladle full of bbq sauce. I generally stop at the butter and sour cream. How was I to know the delights I was missing?? Delicious and so very wrong!!! I was only able to eat about 1/3 of it, but I saw obviously practiced veterans eat a potato like the one I got right along with other meat product like hot links, mac-n-cheese... and a big gulp size glass of sweet tea!! Impressive I say! And a little gross. This appears to be quite the popular lunch spot. The day we went, there was a line nearly out the door. I'm reading these reviews and scratching my head. This place is so average that I assumed the BBQ never saw the light of an actual log. I don't want to sound like a snob but I'm the reigning champion of BBQ at The State Fair of Texas 2012(see my pic for proof) and I'm not saying that I'm an expert but I have a fair idea as to what good BBQ is. Honestly the BBQ and sides at this place could have been from a hospital it was so average and bland. No rub on the brisket or the ribs and everything was overcooked and dry. As to the service when you go through the line...they are total "Honey Badger" (if you get my joke...They don't give a sh_t) We asked for fatty brisket and if we could get some and the guy did not give a rat's as_ for our request. We made jokes to the cashier and maybe she has a personality or sense of humor but she was in a total daise and was only thinking about when her shift ended. The decor is great. It's just what you want in an "Old School" BBQ place to look like on the inside but these people working here are total zombies simply going through the motions to get to work, put some bland food out in some catering pans, and served some meat that is quite questionable if it's actually been smoked with real wood. I suspect that they have an electric oven cooking that meat and they are too lazy to use much of their wood. Furthermore, regarding their wood I checked it out. There's a bunch of NOT split very seasoned pecan, hackberry, and live oak piled up in the back. My point is that this wood was not split. Someone is going to need to go to the effort of spliting it for them to use it in the smoker/oven...well...I don't think anyone is taking the time to split it. Anyway...the food was not good, we were not impressed, and Rick needs to wake up and see what places like Lockhart's and Pecan Lodge are doing. Heck, Rick needs to see what Dickey's is doing even! My favorite BBQ spot in Garland was closed today so I found Rick's by using Google. I wanted ribs but after looking at their ribs, I decided to get a sliced brisket sandwich. When I got back in my car with the food, the smell just wasn't right. I broke a piece of brisket off to taste it and it tasted like absolutely nothing...no seasoning and very bland. The best part of the meal were the spicy carrots. Dang it...I had high hopes but as usual, was let down in Texas. Im convinced that Texans just can't BBQ. By FAR the best BBQ I have found on this side of town. What makes this BBQ 4 stars? The meat is smoked perfectly and nice and moist, but what sets Ricks aside from every other place is the sides. They are wonderful. Every last one of them. They aren't gross like they have been sitting there all day. They are both fresh and tasty. The CON of Ricks: Only open for Lunch! Food: I had the brisket with cheese potatoes and baked beans. The brisket is moist and falls apart, very good texture. Although the brisket did lack the smokey flavor I enjoy o' so much. The cheese potatoes are delicious, and the beans well baked beans are baked beans. Overall I'd give the food a 7.5/10 only because I am very picky about my BBQ. Looks like it took over an old Dairy Queen or existing restaurant, both in structure and interior decor. Really could use a cosmetic makeover. Single serving line, almost empty on a Saturday lunch. Had the two-meat dinner plate, brisket and sausage, with sides of baked beans and mac and cheese. Brisket was dry and plain, sausage was fine, but the sides were either out of a can or not far from it. Couldn't tell if the sauce was house-made or out of a bottle, although it did have just a slight orange citrus taste to it. Came with a limp piece of buttered toast, separate bar for onions, peppers and condiments. Price for the meal was fair but overall it's just a sad little BBQ place. Okie dokie...so yesterday I chose Rick's to cater for an important dinner for my work. The BBQ was great, the sauce, amazing as usual and the pinto beans and peach cobbler were fantastic. Those cheezy potatoes. Gross. The amount of pepper in them was very unappetizing. They looked like a hot mess and were too peppery for most of our visitors to enjoy. They complained that thy would have had potato salad. (lesson learned from someone that organizes the catering for my company.) First off I the ribs were bland, small, and had no flavor. The brisket was very dry and did not have any flavor as well. The sausage was the best meat that I selected. The only way to eat the other meat was with the sauce which was pretty good. The onion rings were ok but you have to eat them as soon as you get them before they get soggy. Came at end of lunch hour. Obviously a contractor favorite as most clients were in pickup trucks or company logo-ed vans. Ordered combo plate w pork ribs and brisket, sides were broccoli and potatoes au gratin. Let's start with the meat since this is a BBQ joint. Brisket was dried out, hard and tasteless. Doused in BBQ sauce (okay flavor but a bit bland) but still dry and hard. Pork ribs had a nice burn on the outside, came off bone without falling off but were also dry. Potatoes au gratin was tasteless with only flavoring being the large amount of pepper. The broccoli was the best item, bright green and not over cooked but still devoid of flavor. Had the chance to take my wife out for lunch the other day. She suggested Rick's and it was worth the visit. We both had the rib basket. The ribs had twice as much meat on them as I normally see at other places. The sides were good and the price was right. For $8.95 I felt that this could have easily been a meal portion. It has all the things a good bbq place should have. It is not a sterile environment and the pitmaster definitely knows his temps. The meat was very tender without being mushy. I will return. read more
