For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

This place is great! We moved to Portland from Texas, where we lived all around in the state, from Houston to Brownsville to Austin to Lubbock. One of us did missionary work in Mexican villages, and our families took vacations in Mexico very often. Needless to say, Mexican food is a staple in our diets. Taquerias abound all over the Austin area, our last home; taco trucks were more prolific than Starbucks; the major grocery store had tortillerias; michaucanas were on every other corner. Last summer, we made the decision to come to Portland, for better weather, better people, and the general atmosphere, but sometimes we still pine for "home", mostly because of food and family. Our first night in Portland, we were taken to Por Que No? on the promise that it would be great food and satiate our craving for good tacos. Well, that didn't happen. The food, while, I suppose, an authentic attempt, was badly seasoned, served with weird sauces and exorbitantly priced. It still escapes us as to why that restaurant ends up on top 10 lists in Portland for great food, much less great Mexican food. We were left wanting. The next day, we were going to look at some apartments in the Mississippi Avenue area, got lost and ended up near Rico's Burritos. Frustrated with the roads and hungry, we decided to give tacos another try. This time, we were looking for quick, cheap street food. Orale! Ricos Burritos provided! This place lifted our spirits and gave us hope at the possibility of good Mexican food in Portland. The food: We got al pastor, carnitas, and chicken fajita. Simple ingredients, extremely tender and flavorful. The carnitas and chicken were both tender, very flavorful and nothing was used too much or too little of. Nothing fancy. It is cheap. Tacos done the way they are supposed to be done. We were, we are so very thankful. Since then, we've tried to find places all around Portland that could match Ricos or have some semblance of goodness. We've tried a lot of the 3 to 5 star Mexican restaurants on Yelp, and none of them have been up-to-snuff. It's rather disappointing, actually. We settled in Aloha for a bit and now we're in Tigard, and though there are a lot of taco trucks (many we haven't tried, admittedly) the ones we have tried have been discouraging. Were it up to us, we would visit Ricos as often as possible, but, alas, getting over the river is a massive pain. read more
