Cannot recommend Sundown more highly enough! First and foremost, they're a family business and…read morethat comes through with the friendly and attentive service no matter what you're shopping for. Our most recent visit was for a new set of skis, boots, and poles for my wife. Admittedly we were lured in by the Black Friday deals, and despite the store being a little bit crowded, Jonathan was extremely patient and helpful throughout the entire experience. We were on the fence between seasonal rentals, rent to own, or just outright purchasing, and Jonathan explain the math and available equipment for all the scenarios. We started off with an advanced boot fitting, complete with a 3-D foot scan, and then Jonathan whisked out a few different boot options (one for each foot) asking my wife to walk around in them for 5-10 mins each. After going through the exercise a few terms, she zeroed in on a nice pair of Nordicas. From there, we went to the skis, and they were running a great deal on brand new equipment from last season, so we bagged 40% off for Blizzard skis paired with Marker bindings, then grabbed a set of Leki poles to complete the set. Their prices are competitive to begin with, but they do price match in the off chance you find something cheaper that's in stock (same size, year, etc) elsewhere. From start to finish, it was a great experience, and we both learned a lot through all of it...Even got some great tips for layering so don't be surprised if we're back in a week or two for some new base layers! PS, and just as a heads up, they charge you a $50 fee upfront for the advanced boot fitting they do (3D foot scans, etc) but that is applied towards any boot purchase, or if you decide not to get boots, you can still walk away with a $50 gift card to the store to use towards something else, so no matter what, there's no loss. I presume they do that so people don't come in, spend a couple hours of an associate's time, and then not purchase anything, and it makes perfect sense.

We have our two daughters in the trade up program and have sent all of our friends with kids here…read moretoo. The trade up program is far more cost effective than renting each season and no other ski shop (that I know of) offers anything remotely like it. Before I detail this program, I want to shoutout Garrett and all the staff here. They're knowledgeable and really great with kids too. Also, realize that "warehouse" is in the name to help manage expectations. You're not in a Bloomingdale's or super upscale resort shop here, but the prices are great and reflect that lower overhead. Here's how the trade up program works: -You *purchase* a pair of skis and boots for your kids when you first sign them up. That equipment is yours forever. -As your kids grow, you have the option of trading up for bigger skis and/or boots for $25 each. An annual tuneup costs $25. This is a fixed cost and guaranteed for the duration of the program, until your child turns 13. So for us, for one kid, we paid $200 at the start, then $50 the next season, then $75, then $50, then $50 (this all depends on whether you need bigger equipment each season or mid-season). By comparison, to rent each year, you're looking at $150+$150+$150+$150 and so on (assuming no price increases). And the skis aren't yours to keep at any point. So depending on how quickly your kids grow, you're coming out ahead after just a few ski seasons, plus a set of skis and boots to walk away with when you're done (remember, you purchased at the beginning). This is a NO BRAINER! From the service to the prices and the unparalleled trade up program, I cannot recommend Actyve Ski Warehouse enough!!

When searching for 'ski shop NYC' on Google, you'll find several outdoor retail shops, but only one…read moretrue ski shop: Panda Sports. After making the 65-minute trek to Bay Ridge, I can confidently say that Panda Sports deserves its unique status. The entire team is incredibly knowledgeable about the products they sell and passionate about their work. They maintain the classic family ski shop vibe found in New England ski towns, but with a uniquely Brooklyn personality. I had the pleasure of working with Duke. I brought in a pair of boots for retrofitting that were a full size too small. We had a straightforward conversation about the necessary augmentations for the boots and discussed the cost-to-success ratio. After two days of work, despite the odds not being in my favor, Duke managed to make enough room in my boot for a perfect fit (albeit a little snug, but that's to be expected). During those two days, it became clear to me that for the team at Panda Sports, this kind of work is a craft. This is a refreshing change from typical employees who are just working a job to sell you a product they aren't confident in. For as long as I stay in the city, wherever in the city that may be, when I need ski equipment, I will make that trek again. (My suggestion to any new patrons coming in, be honest with yourself and with them about your abilities and your knowledge. If you put your trust in them they will be very helpful)

They treat you like gold and never try to sell you something just to make a sale. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and has been there for years.
