First time visiting Rio Grande. It was recommended my our friends. Who said it was one of the best Mexican restaurants in Greensboro in their opinion. Upon arrival I loved all the bright colors. Excellent service, good food and a nice/clean/comfortable environment. A very typical menu in many ways but they have a dish, Jalisco tacos, that I had not seen anywhere else. I had the carne asada version and found them to be excellent. The steak was nicely cooked and the toppings of onion and cilantro were fresh. The corn tortillas were excellent and the tacos were much larger than I had expected. It was served with rice and beans...the beans were flavorful but the rice seemed a bit cool and did not have a strong flavor. Now, they're up to $2.50, but nothing has changed about them - they continue to be delicious! The service has been a bit less attentive lately, but we also tend to order multiple rounds of tacos. This was my first time at this Rio. I've been to two others. Their salsa wasn't my favorite but it wasn't bad. The queso was good. My taco salad was good. I do like a taco salad with guacamole but I've found only one of the Mexican restaurants I go to does that. Our service was good and the restaurant was clean and spacious. My friends and I like to meet for Taco Tuesday specials every few weeks. We normally meet just before the lunch hour to be sure we get a good table. This place packs them in on weekdays. They have some good prices on other items besides the tacos. The staff is friendly and attentive to us and gets our orders correct in a fast manner. The portions are good and I never leave hungry. My husband and I love Mexican food. We probably go out to get some on average at least once a week. We have our tried and true places, but recently both admitted that we think Rio Grande is hitting the best right now. Their flavor is always on point, the service is attentive, and they have a full bar. A lot of Mexican restaurants only have beer and Margaritas (made from mix), neither of which are really my thing. But here I can get a mixed drink to enjoy with my meal. Cheers! We usually go to the New Garden location, but this time we tried out the Friendly cantina as we were on that side of town. First thing we noticed was the interior/exterior. This location has a lot more flare. It is very decorated with bright colors, road signs, cactuses, and other fun things on the wall. It all just kind of added to the ambiance. They have a couple different seating areas. We were on the side by the large bar. Their chips and salsa always come in fast and flavorful. I like the we each get our own big bowl of salsa. They are happy to refill it as many times as you'd like. We are a sucker for the Elote Corn Dip (Grilled corn, cheese dip, queso fresco, cilantro, and pico de gallo, served hot). First it is just huge. You could be full from just eating all of this. Sometimes I am. Who doesn't love Queso, but add in some grilled corn? Yummy. Highly recommend. My husband noticed that the inclusion of the cilantro, pico, and Queso fresco on top is like colors of the Mexican flag , pretty cute. For my entree I got the Chicken Fajitas. It came out sizzling baby. Lots of chicken, peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Nicely cooked and seasoned per usual. Got a tasty side plate of rice, beans, and salad as well. Only strike against them is you don't get guacamole with their fajitas, unless you pay the up charge for the supreme. I get the corn tortillas as I believe they make those themselves. I had enough left over fajitas for another meal for sure. So also think they are a good value for the money. read more

If you're in the area, you need to eat here. The place is clean, the food is hot and fresh, the people are friendly and the service is fast. Because we live on the are we are here often. But today, I had a new dish called Special La Casa. It's two burritos with only beef tips inside, covered in melted cheese. Though it normally comes with a side of rice, I had beans instead. For me, nothing beats a simple meat-filled tortilla with cheese. To help wash that down I had a nice large mug of ice-cold Dos XX's lager. Our young granddaughter was with us and she had a kid's quesadilla. She opened it up and ate the cheese inside of it like a boss. Good girl, you do you! My wife had the quesa birillas. They are basically a taco. You need to try them. Not on the menu, but they are readily available. She had a frozen mango margarita with her meal and liked it a lot. I went to this restaurant to purchase lunch for my associates. I first tried to place the order with door dash, but the delivery time available from door dash wasn't until 3pm, which would have been too late. So I printed the door dash order and went direct to the restaurant to order in person. When I arrived, the associate at the front desk said that he didn't know 2 of the items from the order that I created from door dash...so I called my 2 associates to change the item. Not a big deal. The associate asked me if I wanted the meals today...and I said yes sir. Then I tried to order. He kept answering the phone and took 2 phone orders before placing mine. He finally took my order, $154.00 and waited for the order. It took about 20 minutes to complete. I picked up the order, took it to my office then realizing that 2 meals were missing. I went back to the restaurant to report the situation. The associate called several associates up to his desk. They were all speaking hastily in Spanish. I don't know what all they said. He then summoned a female...maybe a manager...to speak to me. He said that she spoke English better. The female came...and I explained the situation. She wanted to argue with me that the order was complete. I told her that I didn't want to argue. The items were not there. My 2 associates needed their lunch...even if I had to pay for the items again. Without remorse or anything she said that there was nothing that she would do. I had to rebuy the 2 missing dinners. So I had an overnight in Greensboro and this place was recommended. I'm always down for Mexican food! Walking in we were greeted by the host and seated right away. No waiting!! Not even a minute and our waiter was coming to welcome us and provide us with menus. The restaurant wasn't too packed it was just right. Light music playing. The lights were dim but hey I enjoyed it. Salsa & chips came out first and those chips were nice and fresh and warm. Next we ordered some guacamole and that was good too! So we ordered our drinks and what's Mexican food without a MARGARITA! I got the blackberry margarita and baby it was delish!! I forgot to snap a picture of my Mahi Mahi Fish tacos but they were amazing as well. The food seemed pretty good while enjoying it. Unfortunately, 7 of the 8 in my party were pretty sick later that evening. The 8th person didn't like Mexican food, in any shape, or form. We all had different entrees, so not sure what caused it. Plus, the salsa wasn't up to their standard salsa that night. There were a few annoying flies, as well. The service was almost non-existent. A young man took our orders, brought our drinks out, then disappeared from our table. He frequently visited a booth five feet away from us, but, ignored us when we tried to flag him down. There were no drink, salsa, chips, or napkins refilled. Another gentleman brought us our food, and we had to flag down the hostess, to request the checks. A friend of mine invited a few of us here and we said why not. I'm not going to lie, I was very skeptical of this place. As based on some of the reviews, it didn't look like authentic Hispanic food. Wrong. I was so so wrong! It was AMAZING! From the tacos to the rice and beans. It was delicious. But the Carne Asada fries were the star of the whole place! Holy cow! I've never had asada fries like this, ever. California asada fries have nothing on these. Our server was ok, but every other employee interaction was great. And if you're a spicy eater like me, they have a great sauce for you; habanero sauce! We did wait quite a bit for our food, and filled on chips and salsa. Rio is a frequent after-work and I'm-not-cooking-tonight spot that's quick, easy and flavorful. The pick 3 combination is my go-to, typically loaded with two protein-filled quesadillas and a wildcard of chalupa, enchilada or burrito. Can't eat here without the Rio dip (beans and beef, topped with cheese and fresh pico de gallo) or the Elote corn dip-- grilled corn, cheese dip, queso fresco, cilantro and lastly pico de gallo. We just left. Service was bad. The waiter was talking and hanging out at other tables while with us it was drop and run. We had to wait and ask for everything. My daughter was looking forward to dessert but decided against spending any more money there with the waiter more interested in other guests than us. A bit of a hidden gem here; well worth going a couple miles from the Wendover Place shopping center. We were going to try a different (Mexican-style) restaurant on Gate City Blvd. that looked really cool from the street, but recent reviews of bad service led us here instead. Pretty standard decor; mix of old world and modern, with Mexican music playing and futbol on the TVs. For 7pm on a Saturday, they weren't very busy, and we were seated immediately. Chips and salsa followed soon after seating, and did not disappoint. I also ordered a side of guacamole, and my girlfriend, Barb, order some white cheese to dip her chips in. Our dinner choices were Arroz Southwest for me with a glass of Rose wine, and chicken Chimichangas for Barb with a glass of tea. Following is a breakdown of each dish and how I arrived at an overall 4-star rating. Keep in mind, for a couple of gringos, our palates are well-accustomed to good Mexican food after 8 years in Los Angeles. Chips and Salsa Perfect thickness and crunch on the chips, and just the right amount of heat on the salsa. Guacamole Really nothing more than a partially mushed avocado with one small chunk of tomato and a leaf of cilantro. Where's the jalapeños, onions, lime juice, and more tomatoes and cilantro? White cheese dip Good, but could also use a few small jalapeño chunks. Arroz Southwest Rice Tender, good portion, but underseasoned Black Beans Similar to rice Corn Same Chicken Tender, juicy, but also could use more flavor White Cheese Sauce This had some heat, and totally made the dish. Chicken Chimichanga Chimi itself Perfectly crispy, chicken juicy and flavorful Refried Beans Pretty standard, could use a little flavoring Rice Same as mine. Needing more tomato flavor and spices. Included sour cream and pico de gallo. Barb welcomed the sour cream, but really not necessary with the heat level. I added the pico to my dish. Tea (unsweetened) per Barb. Good flavor.
