Stopped here for lunch with a coworker while just in town for the day, and this turned out to be a good place for classic Mexican/American food. I ordered the chimichanga lunch special, and the chimi was crisp on the outside and filled with tender and flavorful chicken inside. The portion was quite small, but it was a lunch special so I wasn't expecting much larger. The sides it came with were fresh and paired well. I also liked that they provided separate bowls for salsa so double dipping was not an issue! The service was very prompt and attentive. Our food was ready within 5-10 minutes of ordering. This was a great stop on the way home to Ohio from Baltimore. It's right off the highway, the food arrived five minutes after we ordered and the staff went above and beyond. The kids meals are huge. Nice restaurant tucked into a strip mall. Service was crazy fast and it was a fairly crowded late covid restrictions Saturday afternoon. They have a unique way of serving salsa in a glass decanter with a warm basket of chips. The cheese enchiladas were excellent if not a little small. That's the good news. I stopped by here this past Sunday afternoon with my wife, sister, newphew and parents for lunch. We were all visiting my sister and she was the one who chose Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant there was a entrance area with a hostess station on one side and on the other side were human sized characters with faces cut out so you could put your face in them. They were against the wall and so weren't able to be used but I will admit that I was amused by them. We were quickly taken to a booth which fit the 6 of us just fine. My only complaint about it is that the table was quite close to the booth itself which made getting in and out quite difficult. As the menus came, so did complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were your garden variety chips but the salsa was pretty tasty and had a nice kick to it. For dinner on this day I was between the fajita rio grande and the burrito bandera before ultimately choosing the burrito bandera while my wife went with the special Lilliana. The menu described my burrito as grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, pineapple, onions & tomato all stuffed in a burrito with sour cream salad. Whenever the burrito came to the table I have to admit that I was surprised at the size of it. It had ample amounts of all of the advertised meats, all of which had good flavor. I especially appreciated the chorizo which had a good texture and really brought some spice to the dish. It was countered perfectly by the sweetness from the pineapple giving this whole dish a sweet and spicy flavor. The chicken, beef and shrimp were all cooked nicely and I really enjoyed them. After being only half way through the burrito I ended up giving up, partially due to the number of chips I ate, and took the rest home for part of another meal. My wife also enjoyed her meal but had leftovers as well. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. Both my wife and I enjoyed our meals and we thought that the portion sizes were more than fair for the price. read more

We ordered takeout from here and we were very pleased with the food, if a little irritated by the menu. We called to place our order and of course reviewed what should be their latest menu right on the website and made our selections but my brother's pollo ranchero wasn't available. No problem, he asked for pollo la Mexicana. Also not available. Ok...he asked for pollo Yucatán. Also not available. Finally he asked what was available (pollo loco) and ordered that simply to be done with the process. Menu clearly needs to be updated or, if this was a one-off sort of thing, tell people upfront what isn't available that day. Mom and I ordered our vegetarian no. 1 platters (our fav when we dine in person there). Food was made fast and tasted just as good as when we dine in, no problems at all with our orders and everything was seasoned really well. Little brother ended up loving his pollo loco and we all enjoyed the nachos with beans so the food isn't a problem at all here. We have enjoyed all of our meals here since they opened, but maybe we will just stick to dine in since they seem to have a limited carry out menu but don't actually provide a separate carry out menu on their website. I love Mexican food. After living in San Antonio 2 times, I hungered for authentic food south of the border. My wife however, is not into anything different when comes to food, so it took me a while to go to this place. My son went there about 2 weeks ago and said he loved the place. Well, my wife decided to surprise me, and drove us there this evening (just her and myself). We were waiting on immediately. The fresh chips came just as fast. There were so many, that it made me wonder what happens to them all if you don't take them. Are they thrown away or recycled. Ehhhhhh. Had to force that thought out of my head. We both ordered taco salads. She likes to copy me when trying something new. So I had to order something easy. she ordered the salad with chicken and mine had beef. In about 3 to 4 minutes after taking our orders, they showed up. It was topped off with one half of a slice of tomato and a giant scoop of sour cream. I started to mix the salad up, and found it completely drenched in liquid. It was more like a soup. My wife's salad was the same. I took a picture of it. Once I get it switched over from my phone, I will upload it if I can figure out how. We finally got two people to ask us if we wanted our drinks filled (literally 15 seconds apart), after waiting there for about 10 to 15 minutes not doing anything. You could not eat any of the salad. Luckily there were chips and our soda. I asked the THIRD guy if we could just get our check. I also told him we could not eat any of the salad because of what it looked and tasted like. His response - to walk away to get us the check. He cared less whatsoever. I had really had high hopes for this place. Well, they are even lower than I ever thought they could go. And I guess the thing that got me to thinking even more was the people that came and sat behind my wife. Immediately after placing their order for steak fajitas, the lady got up to use the bathroom. It was not even 3 minutes when her food was delivered. She had not even gotten back yet. To me, if the food is that fast, (and I told my wife when we first walked in, "Remember, it is not fast food, so be prepared to spend a little and wait." - I was completely wrong on the waiting part.), then that means they already cooked it a while ago, and are just scooping it up and slapping it on a plate. I am writing the first review of this place. It's only been open for two months so has lots of time to get better. This is a typical strip mall resturant hard by old Route 40. The place is well lit, reasonably quiet, and has spacious booths and tables. There was no alcohol at the moment as he said it take a while to get the license. So, if I were running this place here is what I would do and you can surmise my review from these suggestions: 1. turn down the light. It feels like a department store in here. 2. ditch the tv or turn down the sound. Who needs cnn while I'm eating dinner. 3. halve the portion of meat and chicken served with the Fajitas and double down on the quality. The meat was tough and the chicken stringy. It didn't taste freshly cooked and was WAY too much for any three people. You probably should offer a less spicy option. 4. Add some appetizers to the menu. When we ordered a separate set of guacamole the waiter behaved as if we were from mars. But it was good as were the chips and salsa. Kudos for making it yourself. 5. rework the whole menu; it's way way too complicated and full of duplicates. Make it simple and you'll probably do more business. 6. Send your waiters to charm school. It felt like I was being waited on by a convict. I was more than a little intimidated by him. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what others think as this place gets some time on itself. read more
