First time staying here. The rooms are reasonably priced and very clean. The couple that own and run this hotel could not be nicer. They will go out of their way to handle any problem that you may have. They always ask if you need anything if they see you in the lobby or hall. This is an updated older hotel which still has the old time elevator with the metal grate doors that you need to shut. I will definitely recommend and will stay here anytime I'm in Monte Vista. read more

I actually really enjoyed our stay here. There are definitely some quirks, but what a cool hotel. Check-in was good. The staff actually walked me to the elevator to show it to me. It is old, but works fine. There are so many cool spaces to hang out from the lobby to the old bar, the cafeteria, even every floor has an area with chairs and tables. It's an old but beautiful hotel. Our room was small but renovated. The curtains were so high it was tough to open and close them and the sink was rather tiny. However, the bed was comfortable, plenty of pillows, decent amenities, good water pressure and hot water. Good Wi-Fi. The breakfast had some tasty surprises like slices of kielbasa and apple juice in cartons. Not something we often see in our travels. I would definitely stay here again. read more

OK let me start with the negatives. Shower head broke off while showering. Limited front desk. I am so scared about the 24 access door. OMG please put a card reader on that door. Otherwise, this is seriously one of the most inquiging hotels i have ever stayed at. The potential is so massive! I wish I could quit my job right now and come help you guys out. One of the best hotel experiences I've had in a long time. The owner could not be nicer or more helpful. I was there with my 93-year-old dad and the owner went above and beyond to make sure my dad was well accommodated. Staying here is like stepping back in time. It's an historic hotel and it has the perfect mix of keeping its original charm and the upgrades to make your stay more enjoyable. I loved the old-fashioned elevator!! So fun to operate. There are also convenient stairs nearby. It's located right in the main part of town. You can easily walk to several really good restaurants less than a block away!! There's also a bakery that's just a two-minute walk away! Location, location, location! It was really quiet. I heard zero noise from the hall or from other rooms. Didn't hear people walking above, nothing. Just peace and quiet and a very comfortable bed. There's also a good-sized refrigerator with a freezer in the room! Yeah, a freezer!! What a great perk. There's also a microwave and a coffee maker with coffee. Our bathroom was really well organized and the shower fixtures were upgraded. The Wifi was good and fast. Easy connection. They have a really nice free breakfast. It's simple, and it's perfect. I forgot something in my room without realizing it and had a call within 30 minutes of leaving that they'd found it. They really care about their guests! You can stay at a boring standard-fare hotel on the edge of town or in Alamosa, or you can stay here and have a much more memorable experience. Needed a room for the night and this hotel was the most reasonably priced I located on Expedia along Highway 60 between Cortez and Alamosa, CO. The hotel is quite unique and historic with interesting items on display or still within the hotel (elevator, cash register, etc.). The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Parking is behind hotel and was secure. Breakfast was included and very good (real scrambled eggs, potatoes, Portuguese sausage, toast, cereal, muffin, etc.). Overall, I have very good stay for a decent price and more breakfast than I should have eaten. read more

we stayed there two nights and the hotel is in shambles. The owner was not helpful when we ask to change rooms. the rooms were dirty and depressing. in the room I shared with a friend there was bird poop and feathers on the insi ledge. They has not cleaned under the bed and overall the room was dirty. No glasses or plates or silverware available. There wasn't any pictures on the walls and really dark. No mirrors except a small one in the bathroom. I would recommend you stay somewhere else until they give this hotel some much needed TLC. read more

What a great find? Not at all what we were expecting?! We rounded the corner and honest to gosh it was a real hotel. What a treat to discover that it is rightfully historic too. It is on the the National Register of Historic Places awarded by the US Department of Interior! It is well managed and the lobby, factor in Covid, reads very 2022. Which was efficient and appreciated. Thereafter, you get the tour and get ready to walk back in time in a great way. We chose a smaller room, tucked away from the street (super quiet) but still had epic AC, fridge, microwave and coffee pot. They still offer a cooked breakfast. It was our little haven for a few days while we rested and enjoyed exploring their local restaurants. Special shoutout for the elevator - very fun; it's not often you'll have the opportunity to experience one this old?! Also, we learned there is a Sandhill Crane festival in March where there is a remarkable number of birds during their migration. We will be back! read more

It may be a FINE, even a GREAT hotel but I wouldn't know because I couldn't get past the front desk. I love old hotels instead of the alternatives. I had paid already through an internet deal and sent the hotel a message asking about dogs. I received a message saying no pets. That was Ok for me because my dog and I travel a lot and she has a bed in the car and we hadn't gone too far. I could walk her and then say goodnight to her! She is a super relaxed, very easy dog. However the woman at the desk was telling me in a loud voice, "no dogs in the car or in the parking lot!!" She added that a person wouldn't leave children in the car either! NO! No! and on...it was sort of a verbal assault. She was threatening and mean and I ended up asking her why she hated me so much. That's how bad it was. I wanted proof of my reimbursement. She threw down 2 papers that had no-show written on them. Maybe she was having a terrible day and I was the one in her way but this is not a person that should be working with people. I am sorry to write this but what else to do? read more

This is such a 1900s amazing hotel. All the decor was so welcoming and amazing. The hospitality was very sweet as well. On regular days prior to Covid they have live entertainment, bar, and area downstairs. Due to Covid, they gave us a breakfast baggie with water, fruit, muffin, and juice. The bathroom is tiny but adorable. The entire layout is rustic and antique. Perfect location near DQ. WE LOVED IT! And there's tv and air conditioning. And key locks. read more

I previously stayed at The Comfort Inn because my daughter needed a pool after hours in the car. But I like unique and/or historic properties...I'll chose and independent hotel over a chain hotel anyway. The owner Jeannie was super accommodating and gave us a clean, quiet room. The bedding and mattress were lovely. She clearly cares about guest comfort as she has installed portable air conditions in the rooms. The restaurant was closed, but continental breakfast was included. It was good value compared to an expensive chain hotel room. read more

We stayed in the Monte Villa Historic Inn on Wednesday night, September 25, 2024. We came in at dusk with no desire to continue into the setting sun. We had no reservation, just by chance saw the vacancy sign. We were welcomed graciously by the owner?? We were given a very fair rate and further offered a senior discount. I interrupted her as she explained how the heating/air conditioning worked in our room. I requested a room with a screened window, because we prefer the fresh night air to running an air conditioner or fan. Our request was honored. She graciously changed the room she had already booked us in and moved us to the third floor, away from the street noise. Yes the heating unit was awkward to move around, but this hotel is historic in nature and you have to expect some things are not going to be like a brand new Hilton or even a brand new Super 8. The decor was beautiful, the bed was a King and had a brand new mattress...slept very well with the window open and fresh mountain air cooling the room. The decor throughout the hotel is spectacular and the elevator is an antique that runs smoother than some of the newer motels/hotels that I have been in. Enjoyed a wonderful home cooked breakfast and conversation with the cook the next morning. Left feeling refreshed and renewed to continue our journey home. Will have no problem staying here anytime we have the opportunity. Maybe in March for the Sandhill Crane Festival. read more

We had a terrible experience . we got there little after 10pm and the owners reprimanded us for being late. The room is musty and there is a one unit in the room for air conditioning makes loud noise and hardly cools the room. on the second night I woke up at 1am feeling sick and can't breath I realized we have no power and no air. I tried to call the front desk but no one answered, I went down to look for help but couldn't find any one. We recently spent one night at the Monte Villa hotel in Monte Vista. We are very forgiving considering Covid related issues with a business, but this was just plain bad management. The manager told us at check in about all of the issues, including hard to find employees to run bar/restaurant, supply chain issues, etc. She then told us how to operate the free standing heater in the room. The heater was vented out the glass window (yes, they cut a hole in the window glass). The King size bed barely fit in the room. We asked to be moved immediately due to the loud TV and voices directly across the hall. Ok.....fast forward. The next morning we met a friend in town for breakfast. We knew checkout time was 11am. We went up to our 3rd floor room at 10:20 or so. Our key cards did not work in the door. We were locked out and we had one bag left in the room. We walked down to the office. There was no one to be found, not in the 'Office' and not behind the desk, and no where in the hotel. I called the two different numbers to try to get ahold of the owners. After 5 phone calls, and a half hour of calling and waiting, the woman called me and said they had gone to Walmart....in Alamosa! They were on their way back to the hotel and it would be 10 minutes. A woman from the Chamber of Commerce office next door was sympathetic to our issue, not something they want to see happen to people visiting their town. As the owner arrived, the situation got worse and the police were called, not by us. We just wanted our bag and to get on with our trip. The owner was beligeret with others and she tried to explain herself to us over and over. We told her that she is responsible for her business/establishment, and she was in the wrong. This couple has no business trying to run a hotel/service business. Period. read more

Nice old hotel which has been well kept, and renovated somewhat. The hotel used to be called El Monte Inn. For me, the best parts of the hotel are the first level and the old fashioned Otis elevator. The 2nd and 3rd levels are similar and aren't very unique or historic or even furnished with antiques. They have modern (1960s through 1980s) furniture and carpeting instead. There are no actual rooms on the 1st level, so expect to use 1 of the 3 stairwells or the finicky elevator. The rooms are small, for the most part, they do have a few larger rooms, but I got stuck in a smaller one, since I needed 2 beds and it was the only layout that was available for all 5 days I was staying. Since I was on the 3rd floor, I preferred to use the elevator but it got stuck on the 3rd floor the last 2 days I stayed. The magnet on the outer door wouldn't release, so you had to go back down to 2 and then walk over to stairway and go up to 3. Not a big deal though. It is a decent alternative for the Alamosa area, but I will probably try to stay in Alamosa next time. I was able to get a rate of $54/night online, so it's much more affordable than most options in Alamosa. All you have to deal with is a 15 min drive to Alamosa. The desk clerk was a young Hispanic boy and he was very nice and accommodating even though I had initially booked a single with 1 bed, he switched me to a double bed for no extra charge. I ate at the coffee shop (restaurant) on the first morning and found the food to be average. Prices were a bit high for a small town and my bill for 4 people was $41 for breakfast. On the next two mornings I just ate in Alamosa since it was better food and better prices. For 5 people in Alamosa, my breakfast was only $39 to give you an idea. read more

Booked last minute and we are really enjoying it our stay. The rooms are small but very clean and comfortable, plush carpet, great mattress. The old building has thick walls so we didn't hear anything from outside our space at all. The owner is friendly and helpful and it's obvious that she wants you to enjoy your stay and she's proud of her hotel. It was refreshing to get direct communication after dealing with hotels that only book through reservation companies. We'll definitely stay here again. read more

On the positive side: Clean room, firm bed. The downstairs area showed off the best part of the hotel as a land mark site. On the negative side: Pictures on line are very deceiving. The rooms are small and cramped. You can sit on the toilet and reach the sink. There was no place to put a suitcase in order to open it. They say you can request a fridge or microwave, but there is no place to put them. Glad it was only one night. The waitress in the cafe was was friendly but my breakfast was poorly done. Small, clean room. However, no one is ever here. Impossible to get ahold of the front desk. The cafe never opened- ever. No continental breakfast even tho it says there is. The bar is only open a few hours a couple days a week. If you need something after check in, good luck. From what I saw, there are two people running the place. I am giving 3 stars because of the hotel history. It's really old and has great historical charm. And because no one was there, we had the run of the place. Kinda spooky at night, has a great antique elevator and old world fashionings. Probably will stay in Alamosa next time I visit. Mints Vista (the town) completely shuts down after 9. I've seen many negative reviews for this place that I feel fail to take into account the fact that the place was built in the early 1930's. Its quirkiness is its charm; its age is its appeal. If you want bland, standard rooms with "updated" aesthetics, this might not be your best option. But if you want a truly interesting stay with one of the most fabulous elevators around, this is it! Despite its age, it was exceedingly clean, and had enough modern amenities like wifi and flatscreen TVs to please. You may not be able to fit your ball gown in the weirdly narrow closet, but the super comfy bed and interesting hallway carpet make up for it. Yes, it was a bit eerie, especially in the middle of the night, but the staff was gracious, the towels were fluffy, and it's super conveniently located. Besides, eerie is fun! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would ... my sister n I traveling alone arrived late ..we absolutely adored this place . the ambiance the vibe everything was wonderful .all antique which we loved but the service was the worst of my life .. we ate breakfast breakfast employee was also wonderful! Food was decent then while we were dressing in our room at 9am check out at 11 am the owners husband decided to just walk in our room without knocking... I was naked and my sister was in her underwear . He claims he saw nothing n was apologetic but his wife however was rude irate and obscene. When I expanded what happend she told me "o well sue me" n hung up ..she then came yelling and screaming to our room. Calling us names ... we had to be escorted out by police just to feel safe. I recently flew from the UK to attend my bestie's wedding in CO. It was held at the Monte Villa and everyone stayed there as well. We had a great few days. ------ As an events venue: the hotel was staffed very well and everyone was incredibly helpful. The bartenders were especially friendly, welcoming, and generally awesome. At one point late in the reception we asked for a particular drink that they didn't know how to make. One of my friends told them how and they were very sure to check that it was "right." That wasn't something a lot of places would care about. 4 STARS for the event stuff! ------- As a hotel: the room I had has been partly remodeled recently, I think. The room had an updated feel, but the bathroom needed work (the shower/tub had a leak and the ceiling tiles needed replacing). The room had 2 giant carved wood beds (one a queen or larger and one a king or larger), which was really unusual, but I slept very comfortably. The heat on the 1st night was so hot that both myself and my friend melted. One of our friends clued us in to the strange dial in the closet that controlled heat (it looked like a safe lock). A sign about that would've been helpful. My friend (the bride) was in a fully updated room and it was super gorgeous. It seems like the management is slowly working through all the rooms with updates (as to be expected with a large-scale makeover). Breakfast was very good and, as with other elements of our stay, the management were very keen to make sure everything was just right. As we were leaving very early in the AM (pre-dawn), we asked to settle our bill the night before and the desk clerk was happy to oblige and happy to split the bill for us. 3 STARS for the sleeping facilities, etc.! Overall, it's a 3.5, but not quite great enough for me to give it a Yelp 4 Stars rating. It's really lovely to see a historic old hotel in a small community being brought back to glory. It's certainly not easy in this day an age as an independent business. While I don't think I'll find myself back in Monte Vista any time in the next decade, if I do happen to be there, I'd happily check back in to the Monte Villa Inn and see what's new! read more

I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone! Apparently zero stars is not an option, but that is what I wanted to give. I was looking forward to staying at a cute period hotel but this was not it. There was not one era in time represented and all of it was cheap and dirty. The picture if the bar area on the website was a great photo, but not a true representation of the space. It's not used. Hotel AC is awful. I wouldn't call it AC. Rooms are tiny. The furniture in my room was easily 70/80s. I don't want to think about the comforter after seeing how filthy the curtains were. The restrooms were an ok size but it's almost like they made an installation mistake as your legs are under the sink while you sit on the toilet. A strange dance ensues while trying to do your business. The elevator would be neat except again, filthy. I hated having to touch anything and the smell was foul. I gagged the whole was up three flight. Rather than take it down I lugged all my luggage and cooler down the stairs at check out which couldn't come soon enough. The bed was comfortable. It was the only bright spot and the only reason I didn't check out immediately as I felt like I had been baited and switched between the online profile and real life appearance. The worst part was the noise! The walls on all sides are paper thin. Street noise is bad but luckily traffic was very light that night. Our neighbors were in and out of their rooms all night. There was a group of people sitting at the tables right outside the elevator until 3:30am. Finally another guest asked them to go to their rooms. While the noise ceased from the common spaces the noise picked up from the walls. You can hear everything very clearly! My stay was scheduled for two nights. If they had on duty staff past 10pm I would have not even made it one night. I checked out first thing in the morning and asked for the manager to call me. I've called two more times and still no reply from the manager. I'm told his name is John Nelson. Don't expect any customer service from this hotel. Please save yourself the headache and avoid the Montevilla Inn. read more

The customer service at this hotel is unmatched. I got lost on my drive and was arriving after the office closed. The owner realized I was flustered and a bit frightened driving on such dark roads alone. She stayed open for me, upgraded my room, gave me water and snacks, and was just super kind. I am in Monte vista for work and will stay at this hotel...and recommend it...any time I'm in the area. Doesn't hurt that the room is spotless and the mattress is so comfortable. And a ceiling fan....YESSSS!!!! read more

Stayed in this "historic" hotel 2 notes ago. It was the worst hotel experience of my life.1) historically filthy 2) king room had maybe 2 feet of room around the bed. 3) could not stand in front of the sink. 4) showrhead won't tilt below 6 feet, I am 6'2". 5) a/c was broken so they brought an $80 fan up. Here is where the experience went really bad. Day 7 of a road trip and I get a text 2 days later,(today), accusing me of stealing her $80 fan. So far 40 text messages from her after I called her. She threatened the police and her attorney. I said check your video and omg her employee stole the fan.digusting way to treat guests. And of course she pulls the God card. Be prepared if you book the historically filthy hotel run by an owner who will interupt you every sentence without thought or logic. read more

A wonderful, old time hotel. I booked here because of it's cleanliness, my first outing in a year. We were upgraded to bigger beds, and the owners were most, most gracious. Because of the virus, breakfast was in a bag. The bed was comfortable. Only issue was noisy being on main street and someone coughing next door. We stayed for two days, were upgraded to a suite and were allowed to take our dog and two cats. It is not your average squeaky clean low budget hotel. It is like an adventure in a time capsule. It reminded me at the place where I got dancing lessons. Where the community gathers for a local wedding. It is old, it is on the national heritage list and we should cherish it. The staff tried the best they can, but it is still a work in progress. Keep going there, such a place should not be lost in oblivion. read more

I picked this hotel because of the nostalgia of an old hotel that appeared to have been refurbished. It was a wonderful yet quirky experience. We were upgraded to a room with a larger bed at no additional cost. The room was very small and with the king sized bed it was difficult to get around. The room and the bed was one of the nicest I've ever stayed in. This was May 2021 and Covid concerns were still lingering, so she handed us a breakfast in the evening of check-in for the morning. Walking around the hotel was a riot with the nightclub in the lower level which was gorgeous, but unused because of covid. The hallways were all decorated in early 20th century furniture. I wasn't expecting a 4 star hotel, this is a small town. I was, however, expecting something that was from at least the last 2 decades. Unfortunately this wasn't it. The rooms reminded me of staying at some crazy distant aunt's house. It was furnished like they cased out the local flea markets and thrift stores. The rooms were beyond small, and had the crazy musty smell to them. The upstairs landing is decorated pretty oddly. It's a cross between the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland and the Amityville Horror. So creepy and strange. They did offer a funeral rate, which was nice I guess. The less you have to pay for this place, the better. I barely survived the one night we were there, the next day we moved on down the road to the Pecosa Inn. read more

We stayed 2 nights too many during our bowling tournament weekend.The pictures displayed on their web site are very misleading. The majority of their rooms are so small they barely fit the queen size bed. The bathroom was so small you can practically take a shower, use the pot and wash your hands all at the same time. This hotel is a historic building and the common areas are nicely decorated to time period with beautiful antique pieces and the lady at check in was very nice but here's my issues. The TV channels were very limited. CNN & MSNBC are the only news channels. No ESPN or sports channels of any kind and no childrens channels. The bar was never opened. The coffee shop was only opened from 7 am to 9 am. Coffee, oranges, toast had jelly but no butter and individually wrapped danishes was all they offered. The beds were horribly uncomfortable, the pillows were dollar store thin and the headboards weren't attached to the frame. The windows do crank open but there are no screens.Theres no security at all. The doors remain unlocked 24/7, No lobby attendant after 10 pm. No cameras and no assistance in cases of emergencies. There are no ice machines anywhere. Ice can only be given by an employee who gets it from the locked bar. The Inn was to host our rooms and have our annual club meeting catered in the lobby area on Saturday night. Bowlers booked every room to capacity. The night before our meeting our President upon her arrival after driving 3 hours from her home is informed they will not be hosting our dinner/meeting. Thankfully the bowling alley stepped up and went above and beyond to host both the tournament and the dinner meeting. Instead of hosting our meeting the owner pushed us out to host his "Democratic" political gathering where he served drinks behind the zebra bar. I later learned this owner has a habit of canceling events at the last minute. I wouldn't stay here again even if the room was offered for free. read more

This hotel is amazing! I recently went on a week long road trip from Colorado to California and stayed at this hotel. It was by far the cheapest of all the accommodations we were staying in that week and therefore I was not expecting much. I was happily mistaken! The hotel while not much on the outside is so beautiful and antique yet clean on the inside. The owner was so helpful and accommodating. Due to covid the continental breakfast is closed but the owner made sure to go above and beyond and prepare little sack breakfasts for each of us! It was so thoughtful and well done. I left my computer in the room much to my dismay as I work from my computer. I was so afraid something would happen to it, the owner contacted me immediately and worked with me to figure out a way to get the computer safely and in a time efficient manner. She truly was an amazing and caring host and I reccomend this hotel to anyone planning to stay in the Monte Vista area!! read more

This is a historic hotel in the Wild West. This is not one of your cookie cutter hotels you find along the interstate exits. This is not one of the old grand hotels you find in New England. That being said, we enjoyed our stay. The people are very friendly, the area is quaint, and the beds are solid. Don't expect the latest updates in appliances in the bathroom, but everything is clean. read more
