The house itself is that last remaining piece of the original neighborhood which originally stood outside of city limits. The docent was knowledgeable, welcoming, and gave what felt like an insider's look into the Campbell family highlighting original family belongings. My favorite pieces include a gas lamp that illuminates beautifully (seriously stunning) and massive portait of James A. Campbell with his dogs. Oh -- and the ornate toilet. I recommend a visit at Christmas time. The house is beautifully decorated for the holidays and you might just get to see and HEAR a special Christmas tree stand/music box!

The snow was coming down before we began our trip. Cindy our driver, and Glenda our concierge, were not only a fantastic team but made even the nervous passengers feel at ease. Glenda came around with candy for everyone and had a little trivia to pass the time for the up'ing travelers. Traffic was so backed up, because of the weather, but Cindy maneuvered around the traffic and got us to the show on time. It was wonderful to be dropped RIGHT at the door. The snow continued while we were at the show. When we came out, she was again Right at the door. How convenient! Especially with all the little "Elsa's" not completely dressed for the weather. We had to wait to start the snowy trek home. There were 3 passengers missing for quite a while, and Glenda went on a hunt for them. She and Cindy were patient and polite to the absent passengers, and Cindy attended to us waiting patiently on the coach. Cindy was an EXCELLENT driver and made everyone feel very safe. The driving conditions with crazy semi's zooming by was nerve wracking, but Cindy handled it with ease. Glenda brought the Frozen DVD to watch on the way home. It was a great distraction for anxious passengers and the tired young uns. When we arrived back, Glenda helped people clean off the 3+ inches of snow mounded on their vehicles. Cindy waited in the coach with passengers while their cars warned up. WOW....these ladies were impressive!!! If I could give 10 stars I would!!!

Seating around the perimeter makes for easy drink sharing/dancing as does the great sound system and cute lights for nighttime trips. This is a small business that makes connections with their customers and we can't wait to use them in the future!

"We don't go in there"'or "we can't go in there"'was a common phrase. The tour could have been at least an hour shorter, since the stories all started to sound the same, given that we didn't actually see any of the interiors of the buildings where things supposedly took place, with one exception ( a tunnel used for hiding escaped slaves using the Underground Railroad ). I wouldn't go again unless they change it up and let the group go inside the buildings or rooms. Way too expensive for an evening walk around downtown Alton.

We took the guided tour ($8 for seniors) and had a phenomenal tour guide. He was a recent graduate with a degree in history. His tour was very informative and he tried hard to dispel some of the myths surrounding Daniel Boone and some misconceptions based on the Festus Parker protrayal of Daniel Boon on TV. He was great. After the guided tour of the house, we did a self guided tour of the historic village. This was well worth the visit.

However, we went to a wedding rehearsal after they told us over the phone we could, as long as it was between 3-5 people. When we showed up Nancy threw a total fit and would only allow one person inside the church at a time. We asked her if this is really how she wants to be remembered, as this was the first wedding, she didn't seem to care. Maybe this place should offer therapists, seems some of the work force is struggling at home...
