After purchasing Dr. Henry's book, my girlfriend and I decided to go on the St. Charles Ghost Tour. We booked a reservation for Halloween night on 10/22 and made arrangements to free up our evening. Then on 10/30 we noticed a refund from St. Charles Ghost Tours in our account. My girlfriend called the contact number and was informed that our tour had been cancelled due to a "medical emergency with the owner". Mind you this news was delivered in the most monotone voice, no apologies given and without any offer of a make up date. Upon checking our call log we did notice a phone call on 10/29, however no voicemail was left describing the cancellation. Strangely this was just after the weather became unseasonably cold (upper 30's) and oddly enough tours were still sold out for the next few days (see picture). Definitely not a professional way to run a business. Needless to say the cancellation did a fantastic job ruining our Halloween as we could have booked a more reliable ghost tour. UPDATE #1: Once more I'd like to reiterate the fact that NO MESSAGE was left via voicemail (so much for a "professional") and again NO RESCHEDULING was offered what so ever. Classy. UPDATE #2: So upon further review we did receive a voicemail. At 7:59am on 10/29, Dr. Henry himself left a voicemail that the 11:55pm Ghost Tour on 10/31 was cancelled due to "not enough people booking". Odd I thought he was unconscious in the hospital. We wanted a more historical type tour than a Halloweenie type "boo! scary!" and that's what this is. 90 minute walking tour of Old St. Charles area, Dr. Henry describing historic buildings that have seen tragedy over the years as well as background on the area. The photos are from a reproduction of the first church in the area which is built on an old cemetery which still has graves on the location. Purchased Dr. Henry's book. My family and I enjoyed this tour, however it was not really what we expected. My husband and I went on a ghost tour in Orlando, Florida that actually allowed us to have our own experiences. This tour felt much more like a history lesson. It was very fast paced and very contaminated (since it was all on the busy road) there really is no chance to do your own investigating. That was disappointing. I have to disagree with some of the other reviews regarding the guide's sense of humor. It was a bit cheesy but I enjoyed it. He was very eccentric but that made the tour interesting. I do agree he may want to tone down the ranting a little, it was a bit uncomfortable. Overall it was an interesting experience just for the history alone. However if you are looking for a place to actually ghost hunt, this is not what you are looking for. read more

Well the first 20 or so minutes of your "tour" will be this angry man talking about how he hates the Mayor of St. Charles for "hijacking his spot on Ghost Hunters", then you'll have the pleasure of hearing him go on and on with what I call "anti-jokes" because they are so horrendous. Went on this tour a few weeks ago with my wife and a friend from out of town. The tour was much better than I expected. Our guide Michael was a great story teller and certainly had a lot of historical knowledge regarding Saint Charles. Keep in mind that half of this tour will be about the history of the buildings and the surrounding land. Would recommend. read more

Dr. Henry was awesome. He took just my husband and I on a tour at 9:30 at night. I felt bad that he had to just take the 2 of us. But it was really fun and great information, we learned a lot about the history of St. Charles and a lot of paranormal things too. I was actually glad it was just the 2 of us, that way we could ask questions and talk to Dr. Henry. After the tour he took a picture with us and told us about one of his books we could purchase, and the weird thing about that is, the day before I had actually looked at the same book at the book store not realizing it was his! He signed it for us and took a picture with us! I would defiantly recommend this tour and defiantly do it again if we travel back to St. Charles! read more

We had a great time on the tour. Our tour down Main Street was entertaining and full of historical tidbits that made us look at St Charles a little differently. This tour is all outside so dress for the weather and grab a coffee before it starts. The walk is about .5 mile down one side of Main then back up the other. With the numerous stops and stories it took about an hour and half to complete...and only cost $20, which I thought was fair for a fun night. Definitely recommend this tour if you enjoy the untold side of St Charles's beginnings. read more

This was honestly such a waste of my time. We went on this tour under the impression we would be seeing the inside of the buildings where the paranormal activity occurred. We did not and we barely even heard anything about anything paranormal. It was so bad, we left after about 45 minutes. The man droned on in the beginning about how the mayor took his 15 of fame when the they were featured on ghost hunters. This was not at all what it seemed to be and would never recommend it to anyone. Worst $20 I've ever spent. read more

What a disappointment ! A night of listening to a man with a grudge / chip on his shoulder ! This man who " wrote the book "& is the guide ....told us at least 5 or 6 times how much he hates children & how angry he is with the Mayor of St Charles ! The actual " ghost tour " could've easily been summed up in 10 minutes instead of hearing him complain & tell bad jokes ! His were anti - Christian or anti - children with swear words ( including the " F" word)! ... was tacky & offensive . He bashed the City's celebration of " Legends & Lanterns " which was very unprofessional & actually inaccurate ... ( he said that the merchants were upset because no one bought anything during the festival which I know was a complete untruth because there were lines every place we bought anything). I would say 75% of the tour was simply following this angry man around while he occasionally told his unhumorous jokes!! Hindsight I wouldn't suggest paying even five dollars for this to waste your evening ! I found it unbelievable that he even had the guts to ask people to give him a tip at the end of the tour! read more

Just my experience and opinion, but the owner/tour guide (one in the same), was foul-mouthed (using "f-word), appeared dirty and disheveled, and just spoke off the cuff with no formal map, stops or locations of interest. The guide would use the acronym "ADF", which he defined at the start of the tour as Adult Dumb F__k. There were children (14 and 15 years old) in the tour. During the tour, people would slow down to see, out of curiosity, why where was a group listening to a man with a speaker hanging on his pocket. He would rudely tell them they either had to pay $20 per person for the tour or "go away" (this is a public street) and call them an ADF after they left. Some people were merely walking on the public sidewalk and would be looking over at the group and he would tell them to either give him $20 or "move along". During the tour, you may be lucky to hear periodic information regarding the history of St. Charles (which was heavily focused on prostitution) from a speaker that he attaches to his pocket. Some of it was interesting, but probably nothing that couldn't be Googled. I'd say that about 50% of the time, we were merely walking with dead air time (guide not talking). I learned that he was divorced and his wife got the house and the car, that he has so-and-so college degrees, that the Ghost Hunters copied off of what he did, that he works with the architects in the area and other historians and how much they love him and respect him for all that he knows, how he worked at Lindenwood and was fired merely because he made so much money as a PhD that the college decided to replace him with 3 new graduates for the salary he was being paid, that he has written a book and would sell us one out of the back of his pick up truck, that he was going to be doing a book signing if we wanted to go buy his book and have him sign it, and that he was willing to sell us an EMF detector for $30 since they were "$60 online" (actually $10 on eBay) and meet us in a week or so on the street corner to get it, etc. The tour was basically walking up one side of one street, and back down the other side of the same street. Hindsight would have told me this was a low-quality tour. The website is rudimentary, with links overlapping, and no map of where the actual tour walks or any 'stops' of interest. You don't notice that he doesn't have any type of address, just a "how can you find us" FAQ. The owner/guide has a foam headstone that he stands up on the public sidewalk (the street corner of the historical society giving the appearance that they are one in the same) and parks his pickup truck in the adjacent alley. After collecting everyone's $20, he picks up his foam headstone, walks away and puts it into his truck. Several folks were looking around, thinking that he was leaving with our money. He noticed and mentioned that he would be back, that, in the past, he had someone tackle him because they thought he was leaving with their money. He spent about 15 minutes of the beginning of the tour talking about himself, explaining the definition of ADF's being "Adult Dumb F__ks" . . . such as people that stop to ask directions, people with loud cars or motorcycles who are "accommodating for something", or people that look over at the tour but won't pay him $20, etc., and then we walked down one street in St. Charles, turned around and came back. When a loud vehicle or when people that would merely look in the direction of the group, he would stop the tour and tell them to pay or go away. It became quite irritating as several of these people were merely curious and just looking over. I have gone on several of these types of tours around the US. Unlike this guide, the guides have always been professional, using clean, using family-friendly language, informative, and continuously talking about pertinent and unique trivia specific to the designated stops and the area. There have been maps provided that specifies the route, points of interest and stops. This is just the details of my personal experience we our group. read more

I was out with my boyfriend and some friends enjoying Christmas Traditions on Main Street when the St Charles Ghost Tours guide walked up to some of the performers and shouted that he had priority. As the performers continued to do their job (they are paid for this event and are not allowed to break character), he was belligerent, shining a flashlight in the face of a character and telling her to "shut up", in front of a group that included children. Although I did not participate in this tour, as a bystander, I was disgusted by the level of unprofessionalism that I saw by the St Charles Ghost Tours guide. When confronted about his behavior by another bystander, he was rude and dismissive. I would highly recommend visiting Christmas Traditions, as the actors were extremely professional and handled the situation with grace and tact, but I would never book a tour after seeing such a lack of respect. read more
