Headed here after going to the Shipshewana Market today. We got a heads up from a lady we met a church last Sunday and wanted to try it. The place is a very large building with a small area designated to sit down food consumption. We ordered our drinks and sandwiches and had about a 5 minuite wait until it was in front of us. The sandwich tasted good but it was very lean when it came to the amount of meat that was on them. For what they charged there should of been two and a half times more meat on the sandwiches. The Ice Tea was good and the small bag of chips served with the lean sandwich were very good. The store was clean and neat and very organized. The lady who cleaned our table and was working the cash register was a super nice person. I'll tell y'all to take a pass on this spot. I kinda feel bad for all of these spots because they can't compete with Hobo's down home. Sorry!! Hobo's set a standard in my mind and for my tastebuds that has to be met. read more

Had samples around small shop. The samples were all good but the doughnut samples are right at the cash register causing a cluster of people making it confusing where the line is. I picked up some smoked cheddar and ask for six doughnuts. The young man at the register said I could get a box off the shelf in the store, the doughnuts are literally in a case at his knee. I paid and went to get the doughnuts, the boxes are not marked you just have to guess. Of course I got the wrong doughnuts, some of the doughnuts look alike. This could have been avoided if he had just put 6 doughnuts in a box, he had to get a box to ring it up. read more

It's an impressive bakery discovered by all the tourists out of the area that come to Shipshewana to have a taste of what we who live in the area call the "Amish crack " donut! They are like angels on your tongue- very fine cinnamon and powdered sugar on a raised donut. Since failing to secure whoopie pies at Rise N Roll (Middlebury) in March 2010, I did finally get some at both of their Chicago locations later that spring. Sadly, both locations have since closed, cutting me off from the only source of authentic whoopie pies west of central Pennsylania. Therefore, if I was to fulfill my heart's desire--to serve whoopie pies at my wedding reception--I would have to get them from the Rise N Roll in Middlebury. Which is exactly what I did. I was willing to wake up early the day before the wedding and drive the 5-hour round trip to fetch them, but happily my family offered to pick them up on their way from PA to Chicago. Thanks gang! I dealt with Chrissy on three separate phone calls to set everything up, and it was the most painless bulk-bakery order I can imagine. (I actually could have done it with one call, but I had two additional requests which occurred to me later.) Six dozen whoopie pies didn't even make them blink. Chrissy took no information besides my name and phone number. When my parents arrived to pick up the goods, no one in the shop knew whether I had paid, and they were willing to take my parents' word for it if they said that I had. Wow, talk about old-fashioned trust and good will. Plus, they gave me a deal and charged only a dollar apiece. You don't get customer service like this anymore. Delicious as always, the whoopie pies were a hit at the reception despite a 142-mile road trip and 48 hours in cold storage. Why, oh why, did I only get one of the cinnamon caramel doughnuts and one cinnamon roll? I am back home now and have tried a bit of each one and they are absolutely incredible! I'm generally not a doughnut kind of person, but I tried a sample of what they had out and liked it, so I thought I'd indulge. Unfortunately, I did not indulge enough. Even a day later and after being in the refrigerator, this doughnut is nothing short of amazing. The cinnamon roll (good ones are my downfall) is pretty good, too, with a nice amount of cinnamon and none of that pre-fabricated taste that cinnamon rolls so often have. And the cream cheese frosting is like a taste of Heaven. The cream cheese flavor comes through loud and clear and puts all other cream cheese frostings to shame. At the end of my transaction, I was offered a free cup of coffee, which was also very good -- much better than the swill I got from the hotel. I don't understand why this place is so packed all the time. Perhaps it is because I do not have a sweet tooth and don't eat any of the items for sale? The husband does, however, and so every time we are in town, we head over for his fix. They need more space, because people act like choosing a donut is their largest life decision and block the area for everyone else. A woman buying 6 took 15 minutes to make these choices. And, the parking area has NO room, so people double park or have someone else wait in the car and make a mess out of the whole area. And seriously, people, they are NOT Amish anymore - it says it right on their website....."In early 2009, the young Amish couple decided to sell their business to a non-Amish family and moved it to a new facility. The original founders of the bakery are still employed by Rise'n Roll and are active in the day-to-day operations. The BEST donuts I have EVER eaten! What can I say about this place? One word: Delicious! The caramel donuts are one of the best (if not THE best donuts) I have ever eaten in my life. We came at prime time Saturday morning to grab some road snacks. It's very easy to stop at off SR20. There was a long line but it went quick as there were 3 registers. Pies, cookies, and donuts of all kinds are available. We got a package of 3 oatmeal raisin, a dozen peanut butter and a single Whoopie pie. We did get a couple donuts from the case and some homemade cheese ball. Everything is fresh. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Cute shop out in the country which sells a variety of Amish baked goods. Samples of everything, including the fantastic caramel cinnamon doughnuts, are readily available. Besides the donuts they also sell fresh bread, cookies, candy, granola, and surprisingly a decent selection of gluten-free items, including their own scratch-made granola bars. The pecan crisp, which is kind of like peanut brittle, is fantastic. It's sweet and just a little salty so it really does a number on your tastebuds. Plan on buying some doughnuts-it's around $4.50 for a half-dozen, and they're just awesome. They're huge, fresh, and uber pillowy. The flavor Rise n Roll is known for is caramel cinnamon, which sounds a little odd but is mind blowing. The caramel-iced doughnut with sprinkles is right up there in my top 3 doughnuts of all time. If you are going to go here, and have some friends who like to eat, plan on bringing home a sausage roll. This is a rich two pound creation of bacon, cheese, egg, and of course sausage tucked inside of bread dough and baked. It's fantastic. I have a plan for one of these bad boys involving at least 4 friends and my birthday. Some of the other treats are soft granola bars, snickerdoodles, sugar cookies, ranger cookies, chocolate crinkle cookies, and whoopie pies (kinda like Moon Pies or a giant soft Oreo). On the savory side they sell relishes and a handful of farm-fresh items like eggs. Also, free coffee should you want to enjoy some of your fresh-made treats on the hand-crafted tables and chairs. Besides, I like to top off a gluttonous Thanksgiving weekend with- you guessed it, more gluttony! ;) Listen, I'm a Yelper through and through, so if I see a rating like that, I'm going to stop and try it out. So we walked in and ordered the bavarian creme filled caramel cinnamon donut, that way I get to have a creme filled donut which is my preference, plus it would be like getting the 'regular' highly touted cinnamon caramel donut...without buying too many donuts or breaking the bank! I also wanted to try the chocolate coconut someone mentioned. So we decided on those two, then noticed the samples of the regular cinnamon caramel on the counter and tried it. "John! Get the cinnamon caramel, too." I said. Heavenly, light delicious! The sweet and funny clerk said, "Shall we just round it out to 12?" Haha, NO, but I like the way she thinks! So, 3 donuts for later, that's not terrible. And now we can check out the rest of this cute Amish shop of food (jarred condiments, snacks, meats, breads and cheeses, oh my). Oh, and with that donut purchase, they offered a free small coffee- nice touch! This was AFTER we found out they stop making sandwiches at 3, and it was about 3:30. Wah wah. Our intent had been to try "the best sandwich I've ever had", as written in one of the other reviews, and of course the donuts. So instead, we bought a loaf of the bacon cheese and onion bread the particular sandwich comes on. We are going to try and somewhat replicate it at home. :) Now, this is a decently sized store, very inviting with its beautifully carved (oak?) wood tables and a multitude of arranged jars of items like spicy mustards and sweet and hot habenero bread and butter pickles, and a bazillion flavors of jam and jellies, notably, a lot of seedless varieties and more unusual flavors like pineapple and so on. Even better, there are samples everywhere-- and that's how they get you! Every sample I tried was something above average, truly. I ended up buying those habanero pickles as a gift for a friend (wish I could've gotten my own), some Amish egg noodles (for us), that loaf of bread, 3 donuts, and a tiny jar of the seedless blackberry jam; my hubby likes jam but hates seeds like in strawberry, raspberry and blackberry. (He has texture issues. I also call him "no-nuts." I'll let you guess why. Haha) they offered a great little gift assortment set of 6 "pick your own" 1.5 ounce jellies for a very reasonable price which escapes me. There was also an amazing 2 POUND sausage smoked sausage and cheese roll loaf for $10. It sounds pricy, but was huge, heavy and OMG, tasted sooo good, smoky savory moist deliciousness! On another trip, we will definitely pick that up. Suffice it to say, there's so much to choose from here. It's a visually appealing store. The prices were low to average for undoubtedly a better product than comparable products, and the staff was friendly and efficient. It is officially a must-stop for us when traveling this route. I can't wait to try more in the deli and bakery, and snatch up more products as gifts and for just us. This establishment is conveniently close by my out-laws new home. Thank The Lord cuz otherwise the area is a Yelper's nightmare, a desolate wasteland with practically no place to check in other than the occasional gas station- the horror! Wow wow wow, so delicious I tried their pecan brittle and cashew brittle. So fresh and crunchy and delicious. What really surprised me is that the brittle did not have that hard to bite toffee like-taste but rather I could taste the generous cashews and pecans embedded in delicate and velvety chocolate. It is so good you just want to take the whole container and eat it all in a corner by yourself. read more

OMG!! We were told about this place in Shipshewana, IN. (Yes, that's the real name.) After leaving Auburn, IN. after attending the christening of the granddaughter of my wife's best friend from the Nazarene college, we were told that if we had the time we should definitely check out a little Amish community in this town and especially a doughnut shop called Rise and Roll. Well, doughnut shop is a misnomer to put it mildly. Yes, they had doughnuts, but so much more. One could sample nearly all of the hundreds of salsas, apple butter, and chips. A beautiful young Amish gal by the name of Sarah served us and told us that since we'd gotten over $50 worth of stuff (really easy to do), that we were entitled to a special tote for our things. She freely answered all my questions about the difference between Amish and Mennonite religions. It didn't really matter that the tote would only have cost three dollars to buy it outright because we got this one for FREE! LOL Of course they had an assortment of cheeses (except for my Limburger that I like). Don't curl your noses up! If you could get it past your nose, with a dill pickle, onion, mustard on rye bread, you'd like it too. I grew up on this stuff at home as a kid. Good stuff! LOL They had a wonderful complete deli with individual sandwiches or meals and SOUP. I was really hoping to have some old fashioned pork and bean soup, but they only make two soups a day and this was not the day for bean soup. The two choices were green pepper soup and a new one, creamy cheeseburger and potato soup. I chose the latter. When I took it and the rest of our goodies out to the car and went back in to use the restroom before continuing the rest of our four hour trip back to Columbus, I discovered that my wife, Marsha had gotten into my soup and wanted to go back in and get some for herself. The soup was creamy like potato soup, but had chunks of flavored ground beef or chuck with potatoes and onions throughout. We also picked up a brand new bag of veggie chips, but unlike the normal dry cardboard taste, these were seasoned and quite tasty. WE LOVE THIS PLACE! Best caramel cinnamon donuts ever made, and other delicious baked goods, jams, jellies, and pies. We often eat lunch there. The turkey bacon wrap is delicious and they give you a coffee sample free. My husband had a BLT which was also good. You have to get there early as they are always busy and the lines are long, but move quickly and efficiently. We always stop there when traveling to Shipshewana. read more

The bakery goods at Rise n Roll are exactly what I think of when I think of Amish cooking. First off, fresh, fresh and fresh! And that is easy to understand as they likely sell out of most of their donuts, breads and the like daily. We had a couple of breakfast items, very limited menu, but everything was very tasty. There is absolutely nothing like Rise n Roll donuts. This is the first time I stepped in their bakery but not the first time I've experienced their heavenly concoction of donut amazingness. The cinnamon caramel donuts are frequently called Amish crack and it's pretty appropriate. The moment you bite into one of them you literally sigh. I was thrilled to find all the goodies in the bakery besides the donuts. Rise'n Roll is a nice place to go for breakfast if you're just stopping in quick and leaving. I was here the day after thanksgiving for some biscuits and gravy. Also had to get a chocolate sprinkled doughnut and black coffee. Everything was very good and the employees were very nice. They also have a lot of products to purchase right of the shelves like a grocery store. So while you're food is being made you can stroll through the store looking for good eats.
