We decided to let our high school son drive us out to Rise and Roll. Only driving through one red light (it wasn't his fault entirely) and 100 minutes later, we arrived. Based on the reviews I read earlier, we were on solid ground getting the cinnamon carmel donuts as well as cinnamon rolls. We actually ordered a dozen donuts ... no, not for the three of us to eat there but to bring home with us. The cinnamon caramel donut was heavenly. I'm not a huge donut guy but the texture reminded me of a Krispy Kreme (though not hot). The yeast raised donut melted in the mouth while making a mess of the mouth with the cinnamon caramel crumbs. The cinnamon roll was equally as delicious with cream cheese frosting. Yes, cream chese frosting is the right way to do a cinnamon roll. I'm not sure how often we will make the drive to Middlebury but I would say these are some of the best donuts I've had. We'll be back for more at some point... read more

If you're new to the area, you're bound to hear about it. And the greatest part is that this establishment with humble beginnings humbly delivers fantastic products, day in and day out. The baked goods speak for themselves. They are the result of a finely tuned operation that occurs during all hours of the night, made by hands of hard workers we never see, but are thankful for. The daytime staff is just as important. They are some of the friendliest, most helpful & hard-working individuals you will find under the same red roof. Someone is usually cleaning. If you like a clean establishment, Rise 'n Roll is the place to go. If you decide to have lunch, service is excellent and pleasant, and food is consistently good. It is easy to get lost in jams, jellies, breads, pies, and the vast number of items one can take home. Remember to breathe! Whatever you decide to purchase will probably be tasty. While staying on a mini vacation I knew we had to visit Rise and Roll since it was so close to where we were staying. It get so much hype and kuddos I was anticipating mouth watering pastries and great atmosphere. I am positive it was all the excitement lead to my extreme let down. It's a good size building with enough parking for everyone. Today it was pretty busy. Walking in I was a little confused. It's also a small canned food items like pickles etc. then there are dining room tables and then a cold case fridge that has cold items and then the small donut shelf and counter. I guess you come here to either have a meal or just order their all famous caramel cinnamon doughnuts. I've never tried one so when I saw they had samples I tasty a piece. I am not a doughnut fan but these were extremely soft, moist, huge? And the topping is pretty delish. But still not enough for us to order a dozen. The small donut display near the counter holds maybe 10 varieties of these circular morsels but nothing looked good to us. The line to get one is rather confusing because you place your food and doughnut or Oder in the same line. Here's the thing tho the menu is mainly salads soups and sandwiches. Two pages and that's all. It is more of a deli than anything. No one greets you to sit down so you just hope to find a good spot. Prepare to eat with strangers because these are benches there was a waitress but I believe she's just there to clean up. All in all it takes awhile to figure out the layout. It's a little on the crazy side and poor planning. There are too many people that are ordering that the other guests has to excuse themselves and chance people getting irritated. We didn't eat there because I have picky kids and we don't eat sandwiches. In my opinion I wouldn't go back but it does appeal to many midwestern folks. read more

First impression: very clean and organized, friendly staff, variety of items. Loved all the samples and your first cup of coffee is free (plus they have a variety of creamers you can use). My family stopped by here on our way out of the area and we're so glad we did! Ridiculously good cinnamon caramel donuts... the best I've ever tried! The donut is pillowy and extremely soft. It seems to melt in your mouth as you eat it. Somehow, it manages to seem like a light snack rather than a heavy dessert... Incredible. The store itself is great, too. Samples of crackers, jams, cheese spreads, toffee, etc. are available. So is free coffee. Everything is reasonably priced and tastes delicious. Would recommend!!! read more

Good food, great donuts. My biggest complaint is that they label some of their food as, made from scratch, or home made. My wife is a pastry chef and she pointed out that the ingredients label has many preservatives and such, indicating that they buy powders and flavorings to make the cheese dips as well as the pies. She said that when you label something, made from scratch, people expect it to be all natural. I know I did. This doesn't take away from the fact that the food is good and I would definitely go back. read more

Went back and tried the donuts again they are much better than the other two times we ate there. The yeast donuts were good as well as the glazed. We tried several others which were ok. We travel alot and eat donuts all over the country. While these may not be the best we have eaten they are the best in the Shipshewana area. The sausage rolls are still some excellent eating. If you are a tourist in the area and are enammered by the whole Amish mystique you will like this bakery. It may not be as good as the bakery in LaGrange ,it is the best in Shipshewana. read more

Okay, this is just stupid. My wife and I went to Indiana for a day and we HAD to stop in to the headquarters. Well, here is the problem, at the farmer's market they sell the donuts with the holes in them and they also sell the holes. Fine, no problem there. BUT, at the store they sell donuts with the same toppings AND a REAL Barvarian creme filling!!!!! We were like, "Ohh, these look good, we'll take 4." (2 frosted and 2 frosted and powdered.) We headed out to the car with them and decided to "try" them. This is where the stupid part comes in. THESE THINGS WERE FREAKISHLY UNREALLY GOOD!!!!!!!! We thought we would just have a few bites of one and move on...nuh uh, we killed all four in record time. There was powederd cinnamon and sugar everywhere, we were chugging water to get them down, wishing we had our hazelnut coffee, and basically making a mess of the car, our clothes and our faces. (Not to mention our waistlines!) We went to a VERY nice quilt shop just East of the bakery and were wandering around in a sugar coma. Bottom line: GO THERE!!!! Be ready for the sugar coma! Get some apple butter too! NOTE: We just had the sticky buns for breakfast from the market and I swear they must put a cup of sugar and cinnamon in each serving! YUM! read more

Tastes great but I will never buy from them again they use BHT in the cinnamon caramel donut holes I bought. BHT is a preservative banned in Romania, Sweden, and Australia. Do some research on BHT. For an Amish bakery I am surprised they would use an unhealthy and unnatural additive. read more

Rise N Roll is well loved in this area, but I can't say I care for the thick, doughy style of donut they sell. They're pretty bland tasting.

Rise and Roll has the most amazing donuts in the world. They are unlike anything you have ever had. If you are ever driving through IN on I-80 about 2hrs outside of Chicago, you have to stop there. The 20-30min drive into the country is well worth it. My husband and I also stocked up on jams, pickles, and amazing sweet pepper relish, and a few kinds of breads. It's close to my boyfriends summer home and every time we are out there I load up at this place for myself and the list of friends who want their amazing products.
