At that point I started going to a Naturalpath, as it was obvious I was not on the right path. She ran many many tests at a lot of $$ since neither she, nor the tests, were covered by insurance. The tests gave me a lot of great information and I was able to continue with the supplements she had recommended. It helped immensely that one tests identified 5 major food sentivities and removing them from my diet help alot. But a couple years after that, my gut got really bad again and I was always in pain, exhausted and sick. I had 4 friend who had been seeing Dr Varon and at their recommendation I finally made an appointment with him. His healing protocol for my leaky gut, the cause of my belly pain works. It isn't cheap, but it is way cheaper than getting cancer and digestive cancers run very strongly on both sides of my family. Again I am feeling much better and evey time I have another followup with Dr Varon he makes a change in my morning shake which makes my feel a little better still. The only thing I can figure on why he has so many bad reviews are due to preconceived expectations. Just because another doctor, or your own research shows other supplements may help, they are not generally part of a full protocol for healing. If you see him, are open to what he says, respect his knowledge and ask questions at the end of your appointment you will find healing without big pharma and a wonderful doctor. If you just want surgery and/or pharmaceuticals, he is not the doctor for you. I was scheduled for late May at the Concord Surgery Center. This was my 2nd colonoscopy. The first was after I turned 50. The staff at the surgery center was kind and humorous (I needed that). The anesthesiologist, Dr. Kim, was prompt, all business and effective. Dr. Fang was GREAT. Both during the initial consult and during the procedure. Every single time you make an appointment, they take it upon themselves to move it back. Not ONE time in the two years I went here did they ever honor the appointment time I made. So you make an appointment for 10:00 AM and you're driving in and get a text saying "don't forget about your 10:30 appointment." So every time you're sitting in the lobby for 45-60 minutes because these people think it's okay to change the appointment. Go to the office and look at how many pissed off people are sitting in the lobby. I make my appointments I put it on my calendar right away and put a post it on my monitor. Every time. The last time I made an appointment I did this and said if they move my appointment again, I'm done and sure enough they did. This is unethical in every way. People have lives and work and don't time to have their appointments moved around with out telling them. So every time I'd go in I was there for an hour and a half. This is NOT acceptable. Again, Dr. Jue, great. The people who run the office, the worst. It sucks because I had to go through a lot to find someone else, it's hard finding good doctors but the two doctors I've been to since both said this practice of moving the appointment time like this is not right. When he gets there he reminded the staff he had to wait in pain for two weeks before he could see the doctor and he would appreciate keeping the appointment but understands if he is unable to, he just wants a referral to a specialist. They said "fine, the doctor isn't sure if he will see you", but took him back and the nurses took his vitals. A nurse came in and said his next appointment came in early, "so Dr. Lam said he might just see him instead." Well, my husband waited another 15 minutes waiting for Dr. Lam or a nurse to come back. Nothing. After 40 minutes (from vitals to waiting time) my husband had to leave for work. He would have much rather them said they couldn't honor the appointment because my husband didn't show up on time. How rude.

After several phone calls, and Lam's office passing the blame to my insurance company (I have a very rich PPO, and it was not the problem, nor have I had any problems with them) I had enough. I contacted my insurance compay, and was again assured that because I had a PPO, no referral was necessary, just the authorization to go. So...who wasn't telling the truth? My specialist was tired of the run-around and simply authorized it himself, telling me, "You're right. Because you have a PPO, you do not need authorization..." Simple as that. And that last (of several) frustrating experiences was the deciding factor that I needed a new PCP. Thinking back, this could be a John Muir internal controls problem?...in any event, I have switched to a an Internal Medicine doc closer to home who is affiliated with Sutter and Alta Bates. The difference is night and day. It's too bad after being one of his first patients, over 10-years ago. He was a fantastic doctor and I always enjoyed seeing him - his bedside manner was always kind and compassionate. I don't enjoy switching doctors and hoped the office service-level would improve, but it seemed to only get worse. Rather than Dr. Lam's practice receiving 5-stars, which is what I would have provdied them a when I first started, a 4-star is all I give them. I really wanted it to work, and enjoyed his care for the first few years. I didn't think I would ever leave his practice, and am sad that I had to. I really like Dr. Lam, his bedside manner was always great and he spent quality time with me; however, the office administration was really lacking. Hopefully things have improved.
