This location of Rising Star Coffee Roasters was such an unexpected treat that I had to come back a second time during my conference trip! I tried both the Promised Land Latte (cinnamon and honey) and the seasonal special Cowboy Cold Brew (cold brew with milk and sarsaparilla syrup). The Promised Land Latte was good, not too sweet, a little thin on the mouthfeel but overall good flavor. The Cowboy Cold Brew was such a treat: a combination I have never tried, but it worked surprisingly well. It was like a root beer and a cold brew were mixed together for a refreshing drink with very familiar yet unique flavor. It was also such a treat when I turned the cup around and saw the "yeehaw" written on it :-) I also tried the everything bagel with honey brie walnut cream cheese, and whoever is supplying Cleveland with these specialty cream cheeses knows what they're doing! I enjoyed the honey brie walnut cream cheese so much that I made a third trip to this location, just to get a side of it to put it on extra pita I had laying around. Ohio City or bust, the perfect location. I'm sure whatever I have to say has already been said before. I typically go to the Rising Star in the Colonial Arcade, proximity to work and all, but the weekends lead to Ohio City where the sunlight poors in, the baristas are busy taking orders, making spectacular concoctions and working the ever growing line. I'm partial to a chai, whole milk extra hot with cardamom to punch it up, it's perfect every time. I love that the green and go fridge is always stocked and that they have local bagels and Jeff's Candy! Parking is a premium so be ready to walk the neighborhood on a busy weekend. read more

I'm a coffee shop gal, and I'm a definite sucker for a tiny one, so I was happy to see that Rising star was located on the street level of the hotel I was overnighting in. It's unassuming, and everyone moves really quickly inside, but don't let that deter you! The baristas are happy to assist with the menu, or provide suggestions. I love that it's vegan-ish, and they make sure to ask of your like whole milk, or a substitute. I ordered a matcha latte, which comes unsweetened, but there are several choices if you aren't a fan of the bitter taste of matcha. Those choices were: honey, lemon, & lavender. These are an additional charge (noted on the menu, but no price listed). They also have a variety of vegan baked goods, such as chocolate, vanilla, or blueberry lemon scones, poppyseed bagels, plain bagels, cookies, & brownies. I opted for the blueberry lemon scone, but if I'm being honest, it had zero taste. It was like eating... dried tofu. I wasn't a fan, but I'm sure someone else would like it! First time at this Rising Star location. Drink: I ordered the Vanilla Bean iced latte. If it's iced, you'll get it in a 16 oz cup. They don't fill the cup with too much ice, which I appreciate. Not super sweet but I can tell that the flavor is in there. Price point is around what I have paid at other coffee shops. I would get it again. Aesthetics: I love earthy toned decor with some plants and windows. If millennial pink was the color of the 2010s, I feel like coffee shops having green plants is the post-Covid cafe aesthetic. If you are a recovering millennial hipster, you might like this place. It is the kind of place where a manbun could unironically thrive. Environment: some coffee shops are set up for folks to work, and some are set up for folks to sit and chat or to stop by for the caffeine. This is definitely a sit and chat neighborhood spot coffee shop. If you do come here to work, the round tables are not near any electric outlets so come fully charged. I personally don't like sitting on a stool to do work, but if that's okay with you, there are two side tables with metal stools for seats. The chairs at the table may have a size limit, so be aware of that if you or someone in your group might desire more room in a chair. There is also outside seating too. This is my kind of coffee shop in Downtown Cleveland. I've tried their cappuccino, pour over coffee, non dairy almond milk mocha, everything bagel w/ vegan cream cheese, and their croissant. One thing they could do is come up with more interesting seasonal drinks and flavors. I usually end up ordering a standard vanilla latte. It can get quite loud in this location given the crowdedness in the small space. The line also gets long on weekend mornings. This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Cleveland, from the vibes to the people to the coffee. I absolutely LOVE how it's in an old firehouse. They still have the fire poles and garage and it's literally the cutest. The people who work here are so like and funny. I also love the unique way everyone dresses here. Hipster vibes are my favorite. They also make great recommendations here and are straight up honest about it all. They have indoor seating which is super cute and outdoor seating to enjoy the views of the area. There's also a cute little museum across the street and another area to sit with chairs and tables along with a teeter totter and slide. The coffee is pretty good. Very friendly staff, nice space, quality coffee and a good selection of pastries. I had a cortado and an espresso. The espresso was a little sour, but generally tasty. The texture was great and there were hints of fruit flavors as well as some nuttiness and brown sugar-y sweetness. The in cafe service with the demitasse, sparkling water and tiny brass spoon on a bamboo tray looks really nice. Same goes for the cortado (except replace the demitasse with a Gibraltar glass). The cortado was delicious. The sweetness in the milk brought out something like a graham craxker and marshmallow sweetness--it made me think of Golden Grahams cereal. Delicious unique lattes and roasts. We had the cardamom latte and the vanilla bean latte with almond milk and they were perfectly flavored. We also had the Vegan maple pecan scone and the blueberry lemon muffin (which my husband really liked because he said it was similar to the consistency of a coffee cake) and they were delicious and satisfying for a good price. It's definitely on the smaller side, and there aren't a ton of tables, so be forewarned if you are seeking out a study spot on a busy weekend. These folks really know what they're doing. I've tried about half of their roasts and many of them have been really good. Even their basic Peacemaker blend has always given me wonderfully flavorful cup. I often buy this whole bean roast and use it for AeroPress brewing at home. I visited Rising Star coffee shop during a weekday morning in May 2019. I don't drink coffee so I came to work on my laptop (apply for new jobs) and to simply visit this shop. I arrived before 8am so the early morning work crowd was starting to pile inside a little bit. This is a small location in an old fire station building in Ohio City. The coffee shop has great natural light coming through from the garage. I'm assuming that the garage door is probably closed during the winter months so depending on when you visit, you may not experience the wonderful natural light. If that's the case, sit outside the coffee shop where some tables and chairs are set up. I love the charm of this old firehouse. TEA -- This is almost strictly a coffee shop with only about 3 different tea options. I don't drink coffee so I can't comment on the types pf coffee drinks that they have. The tea I bought when I visited was expensive especially for such a small cup. I ordered the matcha green tea and it costs about $4.50 a cup which is pricey for such a small cup. INSIDE -- The inside space is tight but there is one long table in the center of the room and then there are a few smaller tables. The chairs are not super comfortable but it does the job. There is also one bathroom at the back of the building next to a small office. PARKING -- Street parking only. Overall, this is a good coffee shop but seating is limited. I'll probably come back to try some of their sweets such as brownies and pastries because they look delicious.
