I frequent this location inside Van Aken Market Hall. This coffee stand is located right as you walk into the main doors of the market hall. You'll need to go to the counter, order your food and/or drinks, and wait for the order to be called (typical coffee shop experience). Wait can be a little long during peak hours but it's worth it! You can then select various seating options inside the market or outside. Various options are available inside - comfy leather-like couches, leather-like booths, individual or group tables, and high tops. Outside you'll find tables immediately outside of the Van Aken Market Hall or seasonally on the lawn. If you stop by during the right times, you'll find the district bustling with music and seasonal events. It's also always a good idea to pick up a cup of coffee then go cowork at AO or browse the local shops. The menu at this and other locations is concise and simple. You can get brewed coffee, tea, espresso, lattes, and seasonal drinks. The menu is straightforward and not confusing. My morning go-to's are usually perfectly strong iced coffees. I also always pick up something from the specials menu. All specialty drinks are very well made and consistently prepared. I have never had any drinks here that disappointed me. Small batch snacks are available at this location such as croissants and tea biscuits. I sometimes purchase a snack here or patronize other vendors at the market. All coffee beans at Rising Star are top notch. I recently learned that they have a dedicated coffee buyer who travels to coffee farms and brings coffee back to Cleveland. They're also incredibly serious about their roasting process and have a local roastery. How amazing is that especially for a local coffee shop?! You can pick up beans at their location that are named after regions of where the coffee farms are located. Each coffee bean bag has taste notes listed on the bag, choose your adventure! Coffee bean bag prices vary from $16-19. They'll roast them for you and tailor to your coffee preparation method (i.e. coffee press). If you purchase coffee beans in store, you can get free 12 oz drip coffee! You can also order them online and they'll be roasted within 48 hours of shipping. I love to explore their coffees, get something new every time. I highly recommend this location for your coffee cravings! Warning this place is always busy BUT the baristas work super hard. I have been coming here for the last 4 years and always find myself comparing other coffee shops to their vanilla latte. My personal favorite order is an Iced Lavender Latte. And being inside the Van Aken District makes this such a fun spot to yap with friends or go on a date (have done both lol). read more

I usually wouldn't spent $6.25 on a coffee but rising star coffee is top notch. My usual cappuccino (which is about $3.25) just wouldn't do when I saw that they had a Mayan mocha on special. Coffee + chocolate + cayenne? Say less! This has become a treat for me while it's in season. Once this special is over I'll return to my old ways. It's so worth every penny. I get it with whole milk. My friend and I ordered the cardamom bomb iced with oatmilk for mine and whole milk for hers. I was excited to try because the staff were sweet and I love cardamom in my lattes. It was very busy, however the lattes came out very quick. I thought the prices were reasonable, but the latte itself seemed to lack any and all flavor and just tasted very watery. I honestly could not taste the espresso, and I could not taste any cardamom or brown sugar like advertised. I added some cinnamon from the area where the sugar packets and stuff are, which helped a little, but I was overall very very disappointed in the latte. read more

I've been going here my whole life. When I was a 4 year old me and pops used to do espresso shots and now after my 5th divorce they're still just as good. We visited this Rising Star location twice while passing through the area on a road trip to the Finger Lakes. It's located in. Beautiful new food hall with ample parking, great outdoor seating and delicious neighboring businesses. We popped around to four stands to build the ultimate lunch. We ordered the cardamom bomb filled with espresso, steamed milk and brown sugar. It's hard to go wrong with anything cardamom flavored. The drink was a little on the sweet end for me but delicious overall. I appreciated that they don't up charge for oat milk. The only thing they were missing was a friendlier vibe from the staff to make it memorable. Nothing beats a great coffee drink paired with friendly and warm greetings. read more

I got a cortado while my friend ordered an iced latte. The cortado was...not good. The espresso just wasn't great. My friend's latte was decent. They have quality coffee and pastries. My biggest complaint, along with other customers I've witnessed in line waiting, is their work flow--specifically their system for making coffee. They can have 4 people behind the counter and one person pours the shots, one pours that into cups, and the cups sit and pile up in line waiting on one person to steam and pour in the milk instead of just making the drinks as they're ordered. Their process doesn't work--not efficient whatsoever. read more

This place serves the best coffee in town, and the location is simply amazing. The Van Aken Market Hall has one specialized vendor for everything, and Rising Star is the best at coffee. The coffee here is strong, smooth, and delicious. It's as good as the best espresso I've had in Europe, and pre-pandemic times they'd give you a little glass of sparkling water just like cafes in Europe. My fave is the latte, the milk froth is creamy and they even do latte art! The service here has always been superb, everyone is genuinely nice. Do yourself a favor and come here in the mornings for coffee, get breakfast pastries at On the Rise, or the Boro brisket sandwich from Lox Stock and Brisket, sit down on a bench, and people/dog watch. I love the atmosphere of Van Aken hall, and Rising Star is the perfect complement to this space. Whether you're studying or catching up with friends, a cup of coffee or tea from Rising Star fits the bill. The staff takes the time to make your lattes aesthetically pleasing and they also offer oat and almond milk alternatives. Pricing is reasonable at 3-5$ a cup. If you'll be staying a while and want the full coffee experience, be sure to ask for your order "for here" and they'll serve it to you in a nice ceramic mug with sparkling water. read more

This is usually a five star place but the robot woman making my breve cappuccino, when I asked for the lid which was ordered, blurted: "right there" with no eye contact and almost dismissive. It was surprisingly cold and unfriendly for a place I drive 30 minutes to reach. At a time when they were nowhere near busy. Register guy was fine as usual. We decided to stop into Rising Star and grab some coffee to actually drink and also lots to take home. Wow, we were impressed. I had no idea this little gem of a place was here and with so many locations. For sure, some of the best coffee I have ever had. We took home some of the Peacemaker and Los Regalos. While there, we tried the Direct Trade and Illuminator blend. So rich and so perfect. This review is for the 5-person "dream team" staff at Rising Star Van Aken this past Saturday, not for Rising Star itself or their coffee which is generally very good. The 5 girls behind the counter were neither friendly nor helpful as they stood together and yapped amongst themselves instead of starting my order and the orders of customers behind me. After watching this for 5 min, I finally approached the counter. I received a blank stare from one of them and they finally began working on drinks. She delivered my cappuccino wordlessly to me with a lame blob as "latte art." The owners should reconsider their staffing choices at the Van Aken location. I'll start with AMAZING, in every respect - especially the staff behind the counter Lou and Mero. You guys rock. After having had one my worst lifetime coffee experiences the day before in Little Italy (you probably know what store I'm talking about - gag), I had my doubts about another Cleveland Coffee Shop. Well, boy was I dead wrong. First of all you can (must) get your coffee in either glassware or ceramic - did you know that in the US we use 16 billion single use coffee cups a year? Not to mention it tastes much better. So A+ for that. Then, the spelling of all the espresso drinks is correct. Major pet peeve to see missing Cs and Ps in cappuccino, missing H or C in Macchiato etc. And they have Cortado! Two bean choices for espresso drinks including a single origin from Oaxaca?! OMG. And Lou speaks accentless Spanish? Oh, and the cortados and cappuccino were seriously top notch. Spoiled in LA with amazing coffee shops everywhere, but I wish we had Lou, Mero and Rising Star here as well. Well done Cleveland! Can't wait to go back. Gracias. read more

Nice counter at the Van Aken Market. Friendly server explained the different styles and sizes. I ordered a regular black for $3. I like the cup size and the temperature was just right. The coffee wasn't my favorite. It was different, and it wasn't a dark roast, so that was a good thing. I can't pin point my dislike, but I liked it enough to drink it with my meal from another counter. I'll try another cup sometime. Try out Rising Star Coffee, and give your review. read more

This location needs to improve their customer service. One, they don't make flat whites but instead of saying that when your order, they'll try to pass off a cappuccino as a flat white. If you tell them what you ordered they insist that it's the same thing "here". "Here" being Rising Star or Cleveland, not sure... I also requested a drink to stay , and got such attitude when I a cappuccino was served in a to-go cup instead, and I said I had asked for it to stay. The barista begrudgingly said they would make another one. I even said if you can just give me a cup to pour it in, I'll be happy. I don't need internal eye rolls from a barista especially when I I'm a paying customer and tip, especially when others can sit on their benches without paying or tipping. I stopped in to order some beverages on a recent (busy) Saturday and was impressed by the service and drinks! A line was wrapping around the market space, but the baristas moved through drinks efficiently. They nailed both of my espresso drinks - a cardamum latte and decaf latte. Both were delicious and very well-made. Excellent proportions of milk to espresso and not overly sweet. The way it should be. I wasn't the biggest fan of Rising Star's drip coffee though. May have been the last cup of the morning brew or something, but it tasted a little burnt. Overall though, Rising Star's beans seems high quality so I'd like to grab a bag to brew at home next time. read more

I still really wish Rising Star had soy milk, but the Promised Land latte is easily my favorite latte ever. That said, in my three visits to this new location, the baristas have never been friendly, like there's some requisite for working here that you have to be surly and/or disaffected.
