I have a deep love of the smell of bread so, smell-wise, this place is heaven. I popped in here with with a friend and left with a number of things. Baguette, red fife bread, cheddar clove scone and a mocha. The bread buts were crusty and beautiful. Since it was around lunch we also got a pork banh mi to split and it was full to the brim with pork and a decent amount of pickled veggies. Awesome day... Awesome neighborhood... Awesome bakery! I just happened to be driving on Fairmount Blvd today around lunchtime and low and behold what do I see...? "On the Rise Bakery". Well, I don't mind telling you, I pulled over as fast as I could, parked and ran in. There is NOTHING that smells as good as fresh bakery. I thought I died and went to heaven. All the different breads and pastries and brownies and cookies and coffee. Oh my goodness! What do I buy first. Well I settled on a great cup of Jo with a marvelous raspberry croissant. And a loaf of sourdough crown. I munched down the coffee and croissant as soon as I walked out the door. Now I can't wait to get home and get into the sourdough. Servers are nice, but don't expect to be able to sit down, as it's rather small and there's no table space. The breakfast sandwich I got was superb, and rivals the one from Martha's (another Cleveland breakfast joint). On the Rise is a quaint European-style bakery in the Fairmount Taylor neighborhood of Cleveland Heights. Cleveland Heights community really raves about this bakery. The bakery has large assortment of fresh baked breads, croissants, sweets, and other flakey treats. There are breakfast options (such as a breakfast sandwich) and lunch selections. There are also coffee choices aplenty with iced and hot drinks including lattes and cold brew. Bread and treats inventory was very sufficient during my morning stop at on the Rise. No line, it was a pretty slow morning. The baked goods case contains a lot of interesting and unique choices. I treated myself to Pistachio Snail, Apricot Croissant, Ham and Cheese Croissant. I also enjoyed a cold brew. Instead of Apricot Croissant I erroneously received what tasted like Everything Croissant. The baked goods tasted very fresh and tasty. The coffee tasted very diluted. The service was just okay, I felt like the employee at the bakery was annoyed at my questions about cold drinks. All I was asking is what drinks can come on ice. The bakery does not have much space inside to enjoy the baked goods. There is one high table with chairs by the window. Other tables (3) are available outside which is amazing for warmer months. Parking is mostly street parking so you can enjoy a walk in the picturesque neighborhood. Plan for extra time during you visit to On The Rise to visit all the nearby boutiques and shops. read more

The breads here are good, don't get me wrong. But for a place that entered and placed in a baguette contest in France, I was perhaps underwhelmed. The baguette was reasonably crispy, but the flavor was nothing special (this might be true for a baguette ordinaire in France, but not for the "baguette tradition" implied by "traditional baguette"). Fougasse was heavily seeded and had a nice flavor. Pastries were pretty good with nice-quality pastry cream but maybe more chocolatey than I'd expect. It's definitely a great option in the neighborhood if you're around, but I don't think I'd make a special trip from out of town. read more

I frequent their stand at Van Aken because they are consistently great. But when I saw a post that the regular location had an orange cardamom latte, my dream drink from a vacation that I've been pining over for years, I had to stop by and try it. Always delicious. I drive 30 min to enjoy their breads and pastries even though I have a bakery about 2 miles from my house. The Chocolate Strawberry croissant was delicious and retained its outer crispness and inner flakiness even with the strawberry filling and chocolate drizzle. I also recommend their monkey bread, the ancienne baguette and the regular baguette and their lemon merringue tart. All their croissants that I have sampled have been delicious. The front team is always polite and takes the time to answer questions even when they are deluged with customers. This is a great neighborhood bakery (they serve coffee, too!). Was in town and looked up bakeries for a little post lunch sweet. Tucked in a cute little neighborhood this adorable bakery was worth the off path drive. Old bakery feel with modern kicks. I tried the chocolate rye cookie with salt on top because the girl told me it was like a gooey brownie cookie and you don't taste the rye flour. Okay!!! $2!!! And one of the meatiest yummiest chocolate cookies I've ever had. I debated buying more to bring home but knew I wouldn't be able to resist. This place is hands-down my favorite place in Cleveland Heights. Parking can be a bit rough sometimes, so I go at off times, like Sundays, and order ahead on the website. The ham and cheese croissants are delicious - and just as great as the ones I enjoyed in Europe when I lived there. The pastries are amazing, and that is why they placed in the French Mondial du Pain 2025 pastry competition recently. I love the breads, especially the Scali, chocolate cherry bread (Wednesday special) and the Honey Oat Pullman (Sunday special). It reminds me of Europe as well - just quality bread. The sandwiches are also great. My favorite is the ham and gruyere, but the bahn mi is a close second. Everyone is always friendly, and they handle the lines with panache (giving out hot apple cider on holidays). This place is truly a gem in Cleveland. read more

I tried Leavened & their bread was leaps & bounds better & I later found out the head baker at Leavened used to work for OTR. I wish it was on par since I live close to OTR. I can't believe I haven't stopped by to visit this Cleveland Heights staple sooner! I visited on a Saturday morning, and while there was a line, it moved very quickly. I could tell how excited everyone was to pick up their carb fix, as the lady in front of us remarked how everything was delicious when she heard that I never been here before. I picked up a sourdough batard and an almond croissant. The sourdough was incredible, and I've been slowly making my way through the loaf with some warm winter soup. almond croissants are my favorite croissant, so I always have to get kone to judge. The puff pastry itself was incredible: the lamination was immaculate. However, I do wish that they were more of an almond flavor. I'm used to there being almond paste in the middle of the almond croissant, and I felt like I kept eating at hoping that it would appear, and it never did. Still, I definitely hope to be back soon and try more items off their menu! read more

On the Rise is my go to place to get the best bread and pastries in Cleveland. Located on Fairmount Blvd. near Taylor, about the only issue you will have is finding parking on the street, since there are times when all of the parking is occupied since it is so incredibly popular. Even if there is a long line, the staff do a great job of getting everyone what they want. During the pandemic, OTR has instituted an mandatory online ordering system that works very well, you order and pay online, set a time for pickup and get an order number; when you arrive you give them the order number and they put the bag out for you, simple and easy. The different variety of breads, loaves, rolls and specialty items is outstanding, with added specials each day. There is display case of tarts and sweets, plus more cookies and bars. Everything I have tried has been excellent. The bread is hearty with crusty exteriors and flavorful middles. My favorite item is the Rosemary Focaccia, a nice sized round loaf with a perfectly exterior and pillowy interior, the taste is simple but delicious, with the rosemary accented by a high quality olive oil and salt crystals which result in little bursts of flavor. While I have tried and enjoyed the other focaccia versions they have, the simple version is just so perfect that it is hard to pass up. I have also enjoyed the Fougasse, which is a flatbread that looks like a mega pretzel, with crispy bread topped with a seed mix, great taste and a great snack. The multigrain and sourdough loafs make great bases for whatever you want to use them for. The Chocolate Cherry Bread is unique, with just a touch of sweetness and then really high quality chocolate bits and cherries throughout. The pastries are also well worth your time, from deep rich brownies, tart lemon squares, crispy croissants and stickybuns, to the best scone I have ever had. The baked goods are sweet, but balanced with clean flavors and great bases. The food menu is also very good since it is based on the great breads. The Mushroom sandwich was an extended special, a crispy Baguette split and then spread with soft mild cheese, filled with marinated mushrooms and onions and then topped with arugula. The mushrooms are awesome with a great flavor and massive umami, the onions add a slight sweetness, the arugula adds some freshness and the cheese ties it all together. While all of the ingredients are excellent, they blend together perfectly to make a sandwich that is even better together. On The Rise is extraordinary, making the best bread and baked goods in the area, with each item feeling hand crafted, hearty and wholesome. In addition they have Fairmount location in the Van Aken Market Hall. I strongly recommend giving them a try. This is carbohydrate heaven. read more

Also a nice study spot for whenever I wanna switch out that Starbucks coffee smell for the heavenly aroma of freshly baked bread ~ This location is better suited for solo study seshes though, as their seating and outlets are limited. I just moved to the Cleveland Heights neighborhood recently and immediately began exploring for the best spots. On the Rise has quickly become one of my favorite places in the area. Every time I have gone, there is a line, but it moves quickly. On my first visit, the staff was kind and helpful, pointing me to their best sellers and favorites. So far I haven't had a bad thing - all of the food is delicious and fresh. I look forward to trying all of the breads (and there are a lot to choose from for sure!) and working my way through the pastries. My top pastry recommendation so far is the Kouign-amann, which is buttery and has a crisp sugar edge to it. On the Rise is an adorable neighborhood spot. There isn't space to come in and hang out, but there are benches and picnic tables along the sidewalk to enjoy your breakfast! read more

Everything here is so fresh and delicious, it's hard not to get carried away and order a bunch of things. I stop by weekly for a sourdough loaf, their croissants (poblano cheddar is my favorite), and usually many other various things that catch my eye. Their coffees are way better than Starbucks and their lunch sandwiches are also fantastic when available (the banh mi and turkey sandwiches are my favorites). I'm a sucker for the almond croissant and often times the croissants filled with either raspberry or apricot. There's warm seating inside or outside of the vanaken District with ample parking in a covered garage, if it's raining or snowing. Space is dog and kid friendly. They also offer orange juices and other light refreshments that can be bought to complement the fresh baked goods of your choosing. This place is the bomb! My uncle lives in Cleveland so on a visit recently he suggested grabbing lunch here. I'm always down for a good sandwich and recently have been on a bit of a banh mi kick so this was perfect for me. My wife and I actually ended up splitting the banh mi and the roast beef sandwiches and really enjoyed each one! The bread was fresh and crispy, the fixings were plentiful, and the aioli/sauces on each were flavorful. Next time I'm up this way visiting you can bet I'll be stopping back in! read more

Wow! There's so many many kinds of bread and pastries, the bakers were still there at 10:30! Croissants, (chocolate, almond, plain) Kouign-amann, three kinds of scones, at least half a dozen kinds of cookies; coconut macarons, at least ten types of bread. Their latte is nice and strong, like European coffee. Really good. And the guy who made it listened to my ordering it from the cashier girl, so he had it ready by the time I finished paying - incredibly good service! All the staff were friendly and patient and were working hard. The inside's organized well, so pickup orders (there were a lot!) go to the right side of the shop.
