I have taken almost a half dozen or more informal French language courses. The best French course I have ever had was Berlitz, which is rather intensive but you learn some French. Of course, the cost is a factor there. I once took small group and privately with a French teacher who used what was at that time the Alliance Francais text book. It was very satisfactory in that you got into learning the language very soon. Now, the reason I discuss my experiences is that a few years back I took two sessions of the introductory French at AF. I was vastly disappointed in the text although the instructor was sincere and gave it her best. The reason is that we spent too much time learning the names of fruits, the colors and how to say" one thousand three hundred kilometers" in French instead of learning real conversational French. Perhaps this has changed but I notice on their website they are using the same material. Be warned before you sign up.. She served as my younger brother's tutor for a month up until the day before the actual STAAR reading test. Within the first meeting, she assessed my brother and determined how many hours per week he required to gain maximum help. During the tutoring sessions, she tried her very best to make it fun and interactive for my brother to learn new reading and writing skills. She also communicated with the teacher in order to accommodate her lessons with his reading performance in school.
