Some months ago I went to Rising Sun and was not overly impressed, but this week I went back and ordered from the small, but wonderful, selection of items from the lunch counter. This is a very small cafe, with only 2 folks working, the cook and the wonderful overworked woman behind the counter. I ordered the Hot and Sour Soup. It's cold outside and this soup is Hot in a very spicy good way and sour in a wonderful satisfying way. I would go back for this soup alone. The chow mein wasn't fancy, but it was really good as was the BBQ Pork. Just remember, you might have a little longer wait with only 2 people working, but I am willing to wait a bit for really good food, and this is the best Chinese I have had here in Orange County for a long time. I finally felt that this was something close to really good take out places you can find near San Francisco. It isn't Tao Tao in Sunnyvale, CA or the Far East Cafe in Chinatown, San Francisco or even Ho Chows in Fremont, CA, but it is really really good and authentic and the soup will really warm you up!! So stand in line, be patient and kind (just two folks remember), because the wait is worth it. read more

Just had lunch delivered. Ordering on Yelp was fast and easy. Minimum order is $15 and the delivery is FREE! What a deal!!! Delivery was on-time and food was piping hot. And the driver was super nice too! Pan-fried Dumplings and Honey Walnut Chicken. Yum!!! The dumplings tasted good, but looked to be closer to steamed than pan-fried. No crispiness at all and no browning either. (Read the note below to find out what amazing thing the restaurant did!) But again, the flavor was good and I've yet to meet a dumpling I didn't like. ***NOTE: Shortly after I finished lunch, I received a call through Yelp with a recorded message that someone wanted to speak with me about my order. It was a very nice woman from Rising Sun. She had read my review and let me know that I had ordered steamed dumplings and not fried. In thinking about it, I had deleted the item from my cart once and when I re-added it, I must have ordered steamed instead of pan-fried. It was totally my fault! So, the dumplings were perfect - cooked just the way I ordered! The amazing thing was that the woman offered to bring me over an order of pan-fried ones anyhow! Now that is top-notch customer service! I was full and would not take advantage of the offer even if I wasn't, but that speaks volumes about how well they treat their customers! I've seen biz owners attack reviewers for leaving reviews, I've had biz owners apologize for bad experiences, but this restaurant actually offered to fix MY MISTAKE! And she was so nice about it.*** The chicken was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and well-coated. Lots of walnuts! (Yay for me) and it came on a bed of sliced cabbage with a good-size amount of white rice. The dish had a delicious and mildly sweet flavor. The meal had ample amounts, so for $15 and with no time to cook, I've got a scrumptious meal for lunch and dinner! I will definitely be ordering from there on a very regular basis! read more

The owners of Rising Sun are amazing. Their food was already our favorite around and the fact that they were willing to drive 20 minutes to deliver it is already outside the usual customer service. Their staff has always been friendly and helpful whenever we have gone in. However, they have gone above and beyond. When they were dropping off our order, my daughter accidentally dropped the bag. The delivery woman felt so bad and was very apologetic (although it was not her fault) and went back to the restaurant to return later with a couple of appetizers to apologize. I told her it wasn't necessary but they felt it was. She drove out of her way to give us an unnecessary apology (and our food wasn't ruined because of their excellent packaging.). Came here looking for some fast Chinese food on my lunch break. Didn't expect anything too crazy but boy was I wrong! I got the lunch combo which came out to like $7.50. The price is perfect and the portions do not disappoint. What I like was how fresh and healthy the food tasted. They were a little low on items, but that's because I came right after the lunch rush so can't complain haha. I got a mix of rice and noodles and teriyaki and mushroom chicken. Now normally, I always think teriyaki sauce is a bit too sweet and thick, but the sauce here was PERFECT. I'm still craving more. It wasn't too sweet or thick. You could tell they use their own sauce instead of that nasty bottled stuff. I also quite enjoyed the mushroom chicken. The mushroom and zucchini was fresh and cooked to perfection. Usually after lunch eating out, I feel full and gross which leaves me drowsy at work, but that was not the case here. I was full but okay because the god wasn't gross heavy. Salty salty salty! From beef and broccoli to Spicy jalapeños chicken (which was also extremely dry)To hot and sour soup. We couldn't even get it down with water. It felt like they accidentally emptied an entire bottle of soy sauce during cooking prep. They even screwed up rice which is almost impossible to do. 5 STARS!!! This place is my new go to for sure. I have lived across the street for several months, but kinda ignored this place until I got a menu in my mailbox and saw they have several vegetarian meat substitute plates. Went the same day and ordered the vegetarian broccoli beef and the vegetarian orange chicken. DELICIOUS! Everything was fresh and the flavor was amazing! Orange chicken can be super sugary, but this one was perfect. They also give you free cream cheese wontons with a $25 purchase, those were also excellent. Delicious Chinese take out. They have lunch special in the hot tray, and then for dinner they cook it to order. I walked in last night because I was craving curry. The Thai Coconut Curry Chicken was delicious! I received a heaping bowl of white meat chicken, cliched potatoes, onion and carrots. One bowl is easily two servings. So i got the bbq pork(fat) fried rice tonite. Huge portion tastes ok BUT, as you can see i havent eaten much of it yet and already have about 2.5 oz of FAT! UNEDIBLE FAT. I am extremely disappointed that the person who wotks there would put this into someone's take out. I am pissing and moaning but nothing will be done. I wont go back for a while. Wtf!! Delicious! I called in an order in the middle of lunch rush and our food was ready in 20 minutes. Everything was fresh and the takeout containers were stuffed full of food! They have been here for years. And for years they were excellent. Always a combo. Now? No signs, but combo plate is up at 5 pm and then u have to order off menu. But there are no menus out and not much English spoken. We stood there to put in our order, and three people who came in after us had their orders taken and filled before us. I think this shop is the most delicious Chinese food shop in Orange County. I ate Chinese dishes from Panda Express, Little Chopsticks, and Mr Wok , and I think that Rising Sun is most delicious. Took over an hour to get shrimp chow neon, sweet and sour chicken, wonton soup and cream cheese wontons...the lady gave us the wrong order, then we had to call back and when she arrived..our food was cold. My go to spot for a quick Chinese food fix. Simple and fast in and out if your looking for some carry out. If you are looking for a spot to take your significant other for a romantic experience this definitely isn't the place. The staff is always really nice and the food is great for a lunch spot when time is limited. The dining room has a TV and is always clean and tidy. For under $7.00 you get a healthy portion of either white rice, chow mien, or fried rice or even a mix if you ask. From this point you can choose 1, 2 or 3 sides and an egg roll or wonton. I always get the white rice with two sides of pepper chicken and egg roll. I'll also agree with the others that say Rising Sun is way better than Panda Express. Ive never had a bad experience here or have even had the slightest complaint. One thing I noticed while trying to check in on Yelp. The address is wrong unless there is another location at the address given on Yelp. The Rising Sun I go to is on Bake and Portola between Ralph's and Subway. New Owners! I've lived in this area for 17 years now, and have frequented this particular chinese fast food restaurant since it was attached to the next door donut shop. Basically it's entire existence. It's always been decent, but the new owners have really stepped it up, and the food is fantastic! My 5 star rating is based on Chinese fast food. It doesn't get much better than this. The new owners are super nice and friendly, and the 3 times I've been in since, the food has been fresh.. If you've never been, give them a try, if you've been before, you'll like it even more now. Cheers! Update: They now deliver within 5 miles! I was happy with the food when you go to take out, but ordering it is even better. Everything is made fresh and to order and is delievered very quickly. This is a neighborhood favorite for our family. Orange Chicken is great along with the honey walnut shrimp--every bit as good as the fast Panda place.
