I visited Thoroughbred auto for the Maryland inspection and was greeted kindly and had a wonderful experience with the employees. They were quick and didn't take long at all for the inspection. They gave us copies of the quoted repair work needed to pass since they failed us. They gave us two versions- cheaper parts ($1,800) and more expensive parts ($2,400). We needed work done on the steering column which honestly I never noticed had any problem but apparently there were tons of issues. We took the quotes to another mechanic we heard about and told them what needed to be done (without giving them thoroughbred's quoted prices) and the other mechanic quoted us at half the amount. So needless to say we took the repair work elsewhere. I took off a star because it seems Thoroughbred is pretty overpriced and price matters a lot to me when it comes to work on my car. read more

Have had serval cars in this place for repairs over the last couple of years. Only once did I not have to take it back in seven visits. Vaccum lines were not hooked up, tools found in engine compartment, car would not run more than 15 minutes before it died and the list goes on. Making matter even worse, they up sale you and repairs your car doesn't need. Cabin air filter for a Toyota $152. 00, can you believe that? I think they are more expensive than the dealers repair shop. Stay away!!! read more

Would not recommend. Took our car in for Maryland Safety Inspection and it failed because the parking brake did not hold the car. Was informed it needed new rear brake rotors for it to work, so we authorized $576 in work - $209 in parts for two new rotors and $354 in labor to replace rotors and adjust the parking brake cables. They informed us after that this did not fix the issue and that they adjusted the cables as much as they could. They said it would be an additional $876 to replace both cables - $176 for parts and $700 for labor. I asked what cables they are using and they confirmed they were the Febi Bilstein cables which you can buy a set of for $27.38 online. 530% parts markup. I asked them about this and they said they could drop the parts price to $140, which is still a 400% parts markup! The situation felt fishy so we did not authorize the work and picked up the car. I Googled how to adjust the parking brake on the car, clicked the first link, and followed the instructions. Cost me $0 in parts and was extremely easy and now the parking brake held. Took the car back to the shop for re-inspection and it passed. Either they are incompetent and do not know how to adjust a parking brake cable, even though I was able to do it myself quickly by following the first result on Google, or they are trying to make a quick buck, which seems very possible considering the 530% parts markup on the cable. At the end of the day they made $576 off of us (plus $110 for the inspection) replacing rear rotors that likely didn't need to be replaced to fix the issue anyways. Very glad we didn't authorize $876 in a "fix" that was not needed. At least they were very friendly... can't say I will be bringing any of our cars back here. read more

Went in for a front and rear brake assessment. I was charged $189 to have my brakes looked at and then an estimate provided. Their estimate of cost was $2,300 for front and rear brakes and rotors. I took the car to another shop who told me my front brakes and rotors needed replacement, but that my rear brakes were only at 50%. I Noticed just a little bit of squeaking sporadically with my brakes in the last week or so. For convenience sake I brought it right next-door to Thoroughbred Transmissions & Auto Care, Inc. As I stated my brakes only just started squeaking randomly... Not all the time. And I figured I would get a jump on it in case I needed front and rear brakes. I drop my car off, And was told a short while later that I needed front and rear brakes, rotors, a new battery, a new air filter as well as I my fuel system flushed, because... And I quote them... "Because of Covid and because my car has likely been sitting around developing a lot of rust, this would be necessary" However for anyone who knows me and knows that I lost my job this past spring and I have been door dashing just to survive, and driving my car for nearly 10 hours a day consistently every day since July... My car hasn't been been sitting, to develop rust.. my car is being driven more than it ever has! I drove to Advance auto and they checked my battery which tested at 12.7 V which means my battery is perfectly fine. I got my oil changed three weeks ago, and the air filter was replaced at that time... So that wasn't necessary either. As I said before my car had only just begun squeaking randomly... NOT EVERY TIME I BRAKE, only RANDOMLY.... However ever since I picked it up from Thoroughbred today, My car is now pulsating and it is chirping EVERY SINGLE time I brake. The gentleman at Advance auto who tested my battery, also told me, That it's very likely that they simply pushed the little tin indicator Closer to the rotor so that it would chirp a lot more and louder... which it is definitely doing and to top it all off, my car is now pulsating where it wasn't doing that AT ALL before. So I would recommend anyone who wants to bring their vehicle to this shop, please think twice. I will never trust them again. read more

I wish I could have actually found out if the work these guys do is decent or not. I scheduled an appointment with Jon for an inspection 4 days ahead of time. He told me they could fit me in at my requested time, no problem. He then asks me if I am going to stay and wait for the car, because "it would be about an hour and a half inspection." I knew that it was a big process, so I said no, I'll go home after dropping it off. At this point, if they had decent customer service, he would have informed me that if I don't stay and wait for the car, they'll just keep it all day and fit it in whenever they want to. But I had to find that out the hard way...I dropped my car off exactly at my appointment time on Friday morning, he asked me AGAIN if I was staying and I said no. (AGAIN, did not inform me that in that case, they were going to keep it until who-knows-when.) I pay for a Lyft back home, and then 2 hrs later I call them asking if my car is done because I haven't heard anything. I find out it hasn't even begun to be inspected yet, and they're probably going to get to it around 1pm!! That wasn't going to work because I had a commitment in the afternoon and only one car, so I figured I'd have plenty of time to get it back by then. At this point, on the phone, he FINALLY tells me that if I had stayed, they would have gotten to the inspection right away. Unbelievable! That would have been great to know, and I probably would have worked it out so I could have stayed. So I had to pay for a Lyft again to go pick up my car and cancel the whole appointment. Waste of $30 for rides back and forth, and waste of a whole morning. Make sure you know UP FRONT when they're expecting to get your car done by, because they won't give you any kind of heads up. Very disappointing and I will not be returning here. read more

I went to Thoroughbred Auto Care in May 2021 because I needed a Maryland Inspection and because it is within walking distance of my community- Cheery Tree Condos. They did the inspection and told me my Rack & Pinion steering and right front strut were leaking, and I needed tires. Well, that was ok, but when he gave me the estimate of over $4,000 dollars for the tires and work, I was completely shocked!! Then, he proceeded to tell me that the struts were $350 ea. and labor for strut replacement was $540.00. The rack & pinion would be $1500- $2,000. I guess he thought I was an idiot, and he must not have heard of google. Long story, short, I got the work completed at AAA Auto for $1,750.00 and the tires at Costco for $721.00. Bottom line is I saved over $1,500.00 by using a little common sense and google. Folks, especially my senior citizen friends, do a little googling and save herself a ton of money! By the way, I thought I would get an oil change while at Thoroughbred- I was charged $10.26 for a quart of oil= $61.56 just for the oil and almost $100.00 for an oil change. I paid $4.80/quart of oil for my previous oil change at AutoNation in Laurel. I usually pay $50- $60 total for an oil change. Bottom line, these folks will never see me again and I'm going to inform all my neighbors in the community. read more

I will preface this by saying that this review is ONLY in reference to their Maryland State Inspector. We did not have any work done on the car there so I can't speak for their quality of work or pricing. My husband took my car to Thoroughbred to be inspected for Maryland registration. While the inspector found important things that needed to be addressed, he also failed us for tiny chips on the windshield. He said they were greater than 3/4" of an inch which was definitely not the case. However, the report indicated we could repair it so I contacted my insurance company and had a windshield company repair it. (The inspector also said my brakes failed which we thought was questionable but decided to change them ourselves just in case.) Not only that, he also said he wouldn't pass the car if I still had my Virginia State inspection sticker on my windshield. It's ridiculous because you need the inspection sticker on your car while you still have Virginia tags. And you can't get Maryland tags until you pass Maryland inspection. So after having the windshield repaired, we returned to Thoroughbred to get it inspected and the inspector still would not pass it due to the chips and sticker. We had been to 3 other inspectors that said they would pass it. We were trying to avoid having to pay the full fee again but because of this unreasonable inspector we had to. The car passed inspection elsewhere and is now registered in Maryland, no thanks to this place. read more

These guys seem to know what they're doing, but they Consistently over sell labor costs. They tried to charge me close to $300 for an alignment on a lifted 4Runner, got it done for $35 (friend rate). Not the first time they've over estimated labor time needed on me. Took 2 hours labor to replace an O2 sensor, took me 30 minutes to replace the crappy part they used. Maybe I just look like a sucker but I'm done with these schmucks. read more

I was referred to Thoroughbred by a friend after taking my car to the Honda dealership and being told I needed $800 worth of work (+$128 diagnostic fee) to fix a rumbling sound. The staff at Thoroughbred were gracious, honest, and attentive. They promptly identified the true cause of the rumbling sound -- which Honda could not -- and assured me it wasn't a safety concern. Turns out, I didn't actually need any of the work the dealership said I did. DISHONEST. My husband asked me to post this review as he does not have a Yelp account.. He took his truck to check out transmission. After "looking it over" and charging him $397 they said the truck definitely needed a transmission and it would cost him $4,500!!!! As he did not want to spend that on a 15 year old truck he took it to Aamco for a second opinion. Aamco (the transmission experts) they told him NOTHING was wrong with the transmission, and the truck only needed some other minor repairs costing him $250, which did intact address the original problem that Thoroughbred said was a transmission. When my husband called them back to ask them why they said it was the transmission they were extremely rude, they blew him off and said.. "we are standing by our diagnosis". We will never go there again! My husband's blood is still boiling! read more
