Very nice restaurant. It was very quiet and quaint. The drinks were great. Their calamari is delicious, crispy and light. All of our entrees were good. The service was great and we recognized our server from many years ago. He said he has worked there 13 years. We definitely are returning.

3.5 stars From what I was told, when Carpaccio first opened many years ago it was pretty popular. It was one of the first modern-style Italian trattorias on the Peninsula. Now the clientele has settled into the....more mature crowd, and the menu needs updating: typical Italian-style salads, pizzas and pastas. Still, the food is consistently good, especially the lasagna and the signature dish, carpaccio. Have the cappellini with tomatoes, basil and garlic or the gnocchi with meat sauce. A nice size bar and a decent wine list makes for a fun evening. Make reservations if it's the weekend and ask to seat next to the open windows in the summer evenings.

I haven't been to Carpaccio for a year but I am headed to Menlo Park next week. I heard recently that the restaurant has gone downhill in the past six months. Anybody have any comments either way?

We were there last month for a birthday. Food and service were great. Five stars.

Menu joy seeing Arancini - Sicilian rice balls - as an appy. Spectacular taste, texture and filling. Order of spinach and cheese handmade ravioli - OMG - perfection! Also popped for meatball appy to add bulk to my planned leftover. Service was attentive in that perfect team way: server, busser, second server stopping to check. Bonus for after dinner back at my hotel was the light and sweet tiramisu. If I lived local this would be my go-to.

We love Italian food, and I can't believe we haven't tried this spot yet, so we took it to go as I wanted Pasta. We tried their Arancini di Riso - it was delicious but acidic due to the tomato sauce, reduced 1.5 stars for heartburn from it. Arancini di Riso - 3 stars as it was pretty acidic, good tomato sauce is not supposed to be acidic Cesare - their Cesare dressing is great and delicious - 5 stars Gnocchi Tartufati - 4.5 stars, I did like the sauce, it's delicious, the Gnocchi was a bit mushy hence reduced it by half a star, the taste was good Kids Penne Al Burro - 3 stars stars, it's basic, their "butter sauce" is just plain butter, super light and not much in it Mezzelune Di Ricotta - 4 stars, it was okay for me but my husband loved it Can't comment on the service or the ambience, as this was a to go order. Will definitely try it again and update the review

They set up our table in a beautiful indoor-outdoor space, and with the amazing weather, the whole atmosphere felt special. The staff was incredibly warm and hospitable, and once our full party arrived, everything flowed smoothly from appetizers to the main course. Every dish was top-notch. The highlight for me was the carbonara. It's the only place I've found that truly makes it the way they do in Rome. A few years ago, I visited Rome and, like a classic tourist, ate carbonara nonstop. Ever since then, I haven't been able to find anything that compares--until now. One bite honestly took me right back. Highly recommend. We'll definitely be coming back.

I had visited once before and also remembered ordering take-out from them a few years ago. I wasn't super impressed by them back then, but was open to seeing if I would have an improved opinion of them. Roma ITALIAN CUISINE is a casual dining spot that serves authentic dishes at Menlo Park's main drag, Santa Cruz Avenue. They offer both indoor, comfy quarters and sidewalk seating options equipped with heat lamps. Their warm, neighbourhood vibe with white-tablecloth comfort provides a relaxed atmosphere ideal for unwinding. Mom called Roma shortly after 7:30 PM to see if they had a table for five available for us. No problem, so we headed straight to the restaurant and arrived around 7:45 PM. We were quickly seated and served iced water. Unfortunately, we had to return 1.5 rounds of the water because the glasses were dirty. Mom asked our waitress/server #1 for sliced lemon for our water to which she was told that the kitchen ran out of lemons. Interestingly, our waiter/server#2 brought out the requested slices. This was the waitress' strike #1. Roma's cuisine is more traditional than trendy, serving an array of classic Northern Italian inspired dishes. In addition to the warm, soft complimentary bread, below are what we had for dinner: GNOCCHI ($27) + grilled chicken ($11) - The green pesto looked richly tasty and the potato dumplings looked plump and pillowy. V was a fan of his dish. SQUID INK PESCATORE ($38) - Both Mom and Z ordered this PASTA, but Z requested to substitute the clams with more of the other seafoods. Initially, we were told by the waitress/server #1 that there would be an extra charge for subbing the clams, but our waiter/server #2 ensured that where was no such surcharge. Strike #2 for waitress #1. Initial misinformation aside, Z and Mom were happy with their orders. LASAGNA ($30) - Substantial in size. Chaz finished every bite with enjoyment. POLLO MARSALA ($32) - Very good. I was pleasantly surprised to finally enjoy a dish at Roma. Service kicked off with major disappointment due to our waitress'/server#1's falsifications. Mom was extremely displeased by her which was completely understandable. Thankfully, our waiter/server #2 was much more helpful and friendly. He saved our dinner experience...and my opinion of Roma did, indeed, improve.

HAPPY HOUR! 4.2…read more One of the perks of early retirement is that Happy Hour can happen whenever you want... at least in my mind. At this Il Fornaio location, Happy Hour runs daily from 3:00-6:00 p.m., with Mondays offering Happy Hour pricing all day long. The bar and lounge area features three seating options: cozy sofa-lounge seating, a long communal table, and individual seats at the bar, complete with two TVs mounted overhead. We arrived with just 30 minutes left to enjoy it. The Happy Hour menu includes Italian and domestic beers ($7), Italian and local wines ($8), nine different cocktails ($9), plus a selection of antipasti and pizzas for snacking. One thing I appreciated was that the drinks were served in full-sized glassware; nothing scaled down just because it was Happy Hour. I ordered the Tiki Taormina, made with Don Q Piña rum, peach purée, pineapple, lime, and mint. It was absolutely delicious. My husband chose the Margarita Italiano, featuring Herradura Silver Tequila, Lucano Limoncello, Cointreau, mango purée, lime, and a salted rim. Naturally, I had to conduct my obligatory taste test; his was quite good as well. For food, we started with the Polpettine ($13): three flavorful beef meatballs in tomato sauce, topped with creamy stracciatella cheese (the soft center of burrata). Served alongside were three slices of crostone, or toasted rustic bread, perfect for soaking up the sauce. We also shared the Pizza Fradiavola ($14), topped with mozzarella, Italian sausage, tomato sauce, mushrooms, bell peppers, red onions, and spicy peperoncino. It was tasty, nicely topped, and ideal for sharing. Service was good with at least two bartenders working throughout our visit. Between the quality drinks, satisfying bites, and good service, this spot has earned a place on our growing list of favorite Happy Hour discoveries.

One never really knows when any restaurant will close, really, but this place just felt like such a Palo Alto institution that it couldn't close, but it did. I had been here at least once before, in the 1990s, when I was in college and my brother worked in Palo Alto. That era feels like the zenith of this upscale chain's cultural relevance, which made my most recent return that much more interesting. I expected things to have changed or at least to have felt different, but my experience in 2025 was eerily similar to my previous experience in 199x: I was expecting to be annoyed by pretentiousness but was instead wowed by the food and the service, which was excellent. But because it felt exactly the same, it didn't feel timeless; it felt dated in a way that I know rationally things are dated, but I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so I love old things. But Il Fornaio felt too dated either to catch up with the times or to care that they were passing it by. Our large party was originally seated in a cramped area, but they were happy to re-seat us in the patio, which was covered and had heat lamps. That change made all the difference in our experience, because I know my mom, brother, and I would have been itching to get out of here as soon as possible if we had eaten inside. Instead, we enjoyed our leisurely meal, and even though my nephew (a Stanford student) had to bike back to campus, we took our time and relaxed. I can't say I'm sad Il Fornaio is gone. I didn't come here for almost thirty years, and it's not as if the entire chain is closing--at least I haven't heard that it is.

The location is perfect - nearby Stanford - and has a great patio for hosting larger parties like ours. Great table layout options, good amount of outdoor heaters to keep everyone warm from 6-8pm in early March. Beautiful upscale setting perfect for wining and dining the candidates. We always get one red and one white wine poured. For basic cheaper wines these are always solid - which is great considering the wine focus of the venue. For food, we get a selection of pizzas and charcuterie to start and then a full buffet dinner. The food seemed even more elevated this year and was fantastic. The caesar salad had whole anchovies on top (a very nice touch), the appetizer bites are bite sized and good variety, the pastas are yummy, and the desserts are delectable! The tiramisu was so so so great! Service was very friendly and as fast as possible with so many. The bartenders pouring wine were a bit distracted, but still did the job.
