Very nice restaurant. It was very quiet and quaint. The drinks were great. Their calamari is delicious, crispy and light. All of our entrees were good. The service was great and we recognized our server from many years ago. He said he has worked there 13 years. We definitely are returning.

3.5 stars From what I was told, when Carpaccio first opened many years ago it was pretty popular. It was one of the first modern-style Italian trattorias on the Peninsula. Now the clientele has settled into the....more mature crowd, and the menu needs updating: typical Italian-style salads, pizzas and pastas. Still, the food is consistently good, especially the lasagna and the signature dish, carpaccio. Have the cappellini with tomatoes, basil and garlic or the gnocchi with meat sauce. A nice size bar and a decent wine list makes for a fun evening. Make reservations if it's the weekend and ask to seat next to the open windows in the summer evenings.

Carpaccio's is more traditional in restaurant ambiance having been around for over three decades. Sometimes I want that classic feel with simpler Italian food. The fancy interiors aren't always necessary. My friend brought me here the first time. We had an enjoyable dinner with a reasonably priced bottle of Stag's Leap wine but not before a couple martinis. It was kind of cool that they bring reserve martini in a little vile on ice. I appreciate the novelty! She strongly advised ordering the Bombetta di Parmigiano which was a warm parmesan soufflé served in the center on a bed of baby spinach, arugula, and shaved asparagus. The dressing was a perfect light champagne walnut oil vinaigrette. This is definitely a specialty here. -different tastes and the souffle is soooooo good making it an exciting salad. The entrees are pretty simple classic Italian with light sauces and modest seasoning. I had branzino the first time and trout the second time. Both fish were tasty with simple seasonings and lemon. I knew my mom would enjoy this place! I made reservations for her birthday and my bf and I before leaving. Dinner with my mom and bf was great! The service was as attentive and friendly as the first. We all enjoyed our food. Mom liked her chicken and the bf enjoyed the veal marsala and of course I did too! -loved the light wine sauce not heavy... We topped our evening off with cordials and sharing a delicious blueberry panna cotta adorned with a mint leaf. Neither my mom or I like desserts with excessive sugar. This was perfect! My bf is an easier pleaser with desserts. It would be easy for him to find an enticing dessert. The crowd was older. So the atmosphere is quieter for audible conversations. Carpaccio's is an old gem but a comfortable, pleasant experience to the plethora of hip, modern trend of restaurants and food out there. I would definitely return!

I haven't been to Carpaccio for a year but I am headed to Menlo Park next week. I heard recently that the restaurant has gone downhill in the past six months. Anybody have any comments either way?

We were there last month for a birthday. Food and service were great. Five stars.

Our happy hour appetizers of shishitos with tonnato aoili and the fontina arancini paired delightfully with the lemon spritz, $10 on happy hour, a good deal! Rounded out the dinner with the luscious budino and glasses of chilled! Light red wine curated by the wine manager. Service, by our first night waiter, was seamless and warm. The items were delivered to us in the order we requested. No rushing, fussing or slip ups. The interior is cozy, comfy and visually intriguing. So why a 4? I would say it wasn't che fico's fault but in a way it was because of the lack of a response. A mom and dad with 3 children, probs 6,5,4 maybe, terrorized the restaurant with running, standing on the chairs, and literal shrieking at the top of their lungs. Not once, twice, three times but constantly through their 1.5 hour meal. The dad shushed, mom seated herself as far away From the kids as the long table as she could get. Note to parents, if your kids cant sit at a table and eat dont bring them to what is arguably a fancy restaurant. The staff never intervened despite the hazard to their own staff and patrons, with the running and standing on chairs. The shrieking thoroughly Distubed conversation and an appreciation of the dining experience. On the way out, i told the manager they need a 3 strikes rule, 3 behaviors as above and family Needs to go. He said that families such as these are a big part of the clientele so no response. No other dining groups behaved in such a disruptive manner. I have dined at che fico san francisco and never experienced such outnof control children, nor literally anywhere else. If this is ok in menlo park i wont return although i really love the food here.

Our waiter was Octavio, who, like his expertly holy name suggests, was an amazing waiter with a big smile. Every dish we ordered, from simple bread to Linguine Mare Chiaro was surperb. Their affogato is quite a spectacle, something everyone (except no-caffeine enthusiasts) should try. All in all, I hope everyone visits this place to experience the same experience we had.

I would 100% order both again. For mains, I ordered the ravioli lucana, which was probably the best dish anyone at the table tried. It was the perfect level of spiciness, and had a lot of garlic. I ate the leftovers for lunch today and they were still delicious:) A couple others in our group ordered the rigatoni alla vodka, which I really did not like at all. I've had it at several other Italian spots, and it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but I was shocked at how much I disliked it. That was a bummer... The martinis here are crisp, cold, and delicious! I also tried their version of a Moscow mule with elderflower, and it was great. I'm obsessed with crushed ice, and they had the perfect crushed ice in their mule! For dessert, the chocolate lava cake was great. I did not love the caramel gelato but I'm not a huge caramel fan, so a little biased there. The restaurant itself is beautiful, vibrant, and full. I loved the overall vibe. Service was also great all around.

One never really knows when any restaurant will close, really, but this place just felt like such a Palo Alto institution that it couldn't close, but it did. I had been here at least once before, in the 1990s, when I was in college and my brother worked in Palo Alto. That era feels like the zenith of this upscale chain's cultural relevance, which made my most recent return that much more interesting. I expected things to have changed or at least to have felt different, but my experience in 2025 was eerily similar to my previous experience in 199x: I was expecting to be annoyed by pretentiousness but was instead wowed by the food and the service, which was excellent. But because it felt exactly the same, it didn't feel timeless; it felt dated in a way that I know rationally things are dated, but I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so I love old things. But Il Fornaio felt too dated either to catch up with the times or to care that they were passing it by. Our large party was originally seated in a cramped area, but they were happy to re-seat us in the patio, which was covered and had heat lamps. That change made all the difference in our experience, because I know my mom, brother, and I would have been itching to get out of here as soon as possible if we had eaten inside. Instead, we enjoyed our leisurely meal, and even though my nephew (a Stanford student) had to bike back to campus, we took our time and relaxed. I can't say I'm sad Il Fornaio is gone. I didn't come here for almost thirty years, and it's not as if the entire chain is closing--at least I haven't heard that it is.

The waiter even helped us take a group photo. Bonus points for taking our photo in focus. The only minor nit was pizzas were not available. I wanted to order some pizzas to share. They had some really good looking pies online. Perhaps next time.
