This place is awesome! The campus is huge, the staff are amazing, and the rivers and rafting guides are world class. We did the Upper Gauley (pretty much all class 4 and 5 rapids) and it was quite a thrill. I've stayed in the rustic cabins (which are indeed pretty rustic) when we did the New River; but this time, we treated ourselves to a luxury cabin. They are very nice, and it definitely makes for a more relaxing and fun experience. read more

Pretty campground, but the unfortunate reality was some subpar customer service. Thunderstorms and lightning woke us up and my family didn't feel safe to go out on the all day rafting trip, but no one was available to talk to us until an hour before the trip departed. When we asked for a rain check or refund, the woman at the desk replied bluntly, "we're going," and proceeded to neglect our request for clarity about other options. Some policy changes might change my outlook, but the unfortunate reality is this place is not flexible about planning for customers' comfort. read more

This was a great experience. We had never been to west VA or went white water rafting before. We were looking for something and exciting and fun to do outside. River Expeditions delivered. We went on the lower new river full day trip. The instructions were clear, the rapids were a blast and the memories made here were priceless. We even had opportunities to swim some of the Rapids. There were extras such as jumping off of a high rock. Porter was our trip guide and we would definitely recommend him!! We can't wait to return for a second trip in the fall! read more

I was so pleasantly surprised at the amenities here I can't tell you. We stayed in the tent cabin- a wooden deck platform with a 1 room "house" on top built from rainproof fabric and complete with windows and tin roof. Great for night time rain. The room had 4 nice CLEAN mats included and set up was a complete breeze. The pool, bar and hot tub at RE were perfect. Staff was friendly and knowledgable and we had a great time. My first trip down the New River white water rafting was incredible! I stayed in a Deluxe Cabin with my friends at Weekend ReTweat. We loved having our own rooms, full kitchen and a hot tub. Our guide, Brad, was so professional and fun! He had his hands full with our group and was a great sport! All of the guides seemed to be fun, but very serious about keeping everyone safe. Everything from the dining room to the pool with hot tub was well maintained. I highly recommend gathering a bunch of friends to take the trip to WV for a white water adventure with River Expeditions! If you don't want to stay in a cabin, try the tents on platforms or the smaller cabins. The tent camping looked good too. Great base camp for what ever adventure you choose. read more

We made a boys weekend of rafting and zip line adventure. The cabin we stayed in was clean and had a fridge, bbq, coffee pot, microwave and bathroom with shower. On Saturday we rafted the lower New River gorge. Awesome experience. Our guide, Zach, was professional, knowledgeable and spun a good yarn throughout the trip. All of the guides were professional and friendly but I have no doubt that Zach tailored the experience for our group. Next it was the zip line. It was so much fun! The employees there are so kind and helpful. The camping site was wonderful. They had showers which was great and the bathrooms was so clean. The rafting guides were so helpful and so nice. The trip was very organized too, they did such a great job. The food that they had on our rafting trip was great too, I was just expecting sandwiches but they had so much more for than that, even desert. This is a great trip for any type of group, highly recommend it, so much fun! read more

This is my second time here and my wife and daughter's 1st time. We went with a group of friends (15) rented two cabins. The only small complaint was the hot tub, needs to be cleaned a little more or provide the chemicals to keep clean. My wife and daughter (17) would much rather be on the beach in Turks and Caicos and they are not the outdoors type. They were very nervous about the white water rafting. THEY HAD A BLAST!!! Carla was our guide and we had mostly (So Pretty) women on the boat who had never done this before. She was very firm and got the attention of them when she needed to, made the trip so much fun and made them fell so safe that they wanted to go back. Great place to stay when you are doing this type of stuff. Not a bad drive up from North Fla (Jax) about 9 hours and once you get past NC/VA line you will have a great scenic trip. I hope they have the same special they ran last Black Friday... awesome deal not expensive at all. We will be back next year. read more

Our raft guy Darr was super knowledgable and absolutely hilarious. If you are going to raft with this company I would recommend doing everything in your power to request Carla as your river guide. She is clearly a person who is comfortable with herself and the river, and will make sure you have one of the most memorable trips of your life. We started out as two different groups put together but by the end all of our faces hurt from laughing so much, and Carla was the glue that brought us together. Our church group (ages 71-19) had a great time!! Staff was great, professional, knowledgable and personable. Accommodations adequate (Rustic Cabins). Only dings were that the bathrooms were pretty far for middle of the night runs and no protein options at breakfast. Other than those quibbles, it was fantastic. read more

River Expeditions is ETHICALLY CHALLENGED and PREFERS GREED TO TREATING CUSTOMERS FAIRLY. There other outdoor adventure outfitters in the New River Gorge area that you can easily find on the internet. Give your business to them. My family is out the considerable sum of $921 to River Expeditions (RE) for a rafting trip never taken. Below is the story of our most unfortunate experience with RE - you can judge for yourself. - I made a reservation with River Expeditions (RE) for a rafting trip for July 3 2012 for 10 members of my family as part of a family reunion July 1-5. - A derecho (wall of severe thunderstorms) occurred in West Virginia the evening of June 29, causing major power outages and long lines at gas stations in the Fayetteville area. It also necessitated the relocation of my family reunion because our reserved lodging facility lost power and could not accommodate us, as communicated to us on June 30. - We tried to contact RE by phone for two days, June 30 and July 1, to discuss their status and ours and could not reach them; it was unclear whether they would be open by July 3; and even if so, it wasn't clear it would be wise to travel into the area. - We resorted on July 1 to informing RE through their web site and by email that given the situation we wanted to cancel and felt a refund was appropriate and asked them to confirm back. - RE did not respond to us until the morning of July 3, indicating that they were still expecting us, at which point it was too late to show up for the trip (a 3 hour drive). - RE afterward offered us a rain check that is simply not feasible for my family group because we come from all over the United States, our reunions only occur every three years, the same people don't come to each one, and the location of a reunion is determined in part by who is coming to share the burden of travel. All of that was explained to RE, yet they maintain that their offer of a rain check is a 'fair and equitable resolution". How disingenuous! - RE is keeping the full price of the trip, $921. Given RE's lack of response before July 3 and the ludicrousness of a rain check 'resolution' in our case, I regard RE's behavior as ethically equivalent to theft. If RE responds to this review, they may politely say that they regret our dissatisfaction, which would be mere lip service compared to our loss of $921. And they may refer to their strict adherence to their 'no refunds' policy, as though it is inviolable. But will they acknowledge that they always have the option of making an exception when it's the right thing to do? Will they take any responsibility for being non-responsive? Will they admit that there is no practical way we can utilize a rain check? They may also cite the outcome of my credit card company's dispute resolution process, which decided in favor of RE, with the reason "the merchant was willing and able to provide the service but was prohibited from doing so as a result of circumstances beyond their control"; but that puzzling assessment merely indicates to us the limitations and mysteriousness of that process (i.e., a half-hearted pseudo-legal evaluation, rather than the credit company advocating on behalf of the customer for what is actually fair). read more

I can't overstate how disappointed I was by the camping experience here. Even after trying to avoid memorial day crowds, we apparently picked a "bad weekend". Unbeknownst to us, and unlike virtually all the other campgrounds up there, River Expeditions allows major parties (talking 150+ people), of which there were two the night we stayed. I was out there with my brothers and sister, and we'll drink a few beers and stay up with music after midnight, but the campground was an absolute mess. Someone was blasting a train horn periodically all night, people were yelling and doing kegstands, and despite camping as far away from all of this as possible, we still had a blackout-drunk guy slam into our tent at 3am. I had to get up to pick him up and chase him off and nearly kicked his ass. There was no campground management to speak of. Needless to say, we got no sleep. The next day we took a river trip with an apparently experienced but overbearing guide who seemed like she just didn't like the rafters under her charge. I've been a kayaker and a river runner for the majority of my life and she'll stand out as the guide who made me feel the most uncomfortable. Fortunately, the weather was great, and our guide did nail the lines, and with no injuries you have to say hellll yeah after a beautiful day on the river. A+ to the New River, D- to River Expeditions. The next time I take my family rafting up there, we'll use a different company without question. read more

We loved rafting with these guys! Got the groupon 2 night, 1 day lower new river package. We are definitely going to do it again! There were some positives and negatives with our experience. We camped, where we pitched our own tent. We inadvertently camped next to about 30 college kids, who decided the entire area was going to be there personal frat house for the night. In the regular camping areas there is a 1am quiet time, but that didn't stop these guys. With 4 hours sleep we went for our full day of rafting...that was painful. After talking with some staff members, we were informed if it happened again, the quiet time being ignored, to tell them and they would speak to them. A little inconvenient but ok. Thankfully the college students were tired the second night... There is a designated 10 am quiet area that we may utilize next time. And believe me we are not old farts that don't like to have a good time, nor do we have children, we just like to sleep when we have to wake up early. Rafting was awesome, it was a few of our first times! We had Eric C. as our guide, he was friendly, informative and professional. We are going to request him for our next trip! Don't forget you can tip your guide!!! The included small breakfast is not worth the walk up the stairs. But the river side lunch was perfect and filling, bread, sandwich meat, cheeses, sides, veggies, chips and dip etc. Very filling! Dinner was surprisingly great! Large steak (you made your choice (fish, chicken, pasta or steak) upon reserving the package) cooked to order, large potato, green beans, roll, side salad and brownie. Perfect meal after a long day rafting! We are tired, sore and so happy with the memories that were created this weekend! We love this place and will definitely be back, we just will have to choose our camping area wisely! read more

Went with Living Social. Wide variety of camping options (from no-alcohol to anything goes), and we went with a middle option with an 11 pm quiet hour. Campsite was clean and well-kept with a steel fire pit. Bath house and toilets were clean. Camp store had various camping sundries, without attempting to gouge you. Located right across the street from a large shopping center with a Kroger, so they can't overcharge anyway. Food was good. Bands were good (one bluegrass during dinner, one 80's rock/Johnny Cash during happy hour). Pool and hot tub were clean. Living Social's free beer from 4-10 was a nice perk. Saloon had cheaper prices than places in Fayetteville, with the same beers on tap (and more). Our guide (Jake) was fantastic and hilarious. He drew us a detailed map for a hiking site for Sunday. This facility obviously does a lot to try and keep you on-site to keep using their amenities (paint ball, cornhole, horseshoes, etc.), and we did so not only for convenience, but because the prices were great and the Living Social crowd (including the two LS staffers) were fun and engaging. I'd definitely recommend as a weekend getaway for the 20-35 crowd. read more

We just got back from rafting and it was great! Very clean camping facilities including the showers. My only complaint is the gross porty potties in the tent camping area. Totally gross with no toilet paper. But we just made the drive to the very nice shower houses. Breakfast served could be better but it was quick and that is important. Our dinner (we chose steak) was very good, came with salad, baked potato, green beans and brownies. The saloon is totally cool, got free drinks to enjoy with our DVD viewing. We got a free CD with our package of the pictures and that was good enough for us. Our guide "Big Josh" was the best! Really knew the history of the area, gave us some tips on other things to do in the area and most importantly got us back safely. We would so totally do this again and highly recommend to all! read more

I love their camp site. This is the second time we've camped and rafted with them this year. They are prepared, organized, and it doesn't compromise the experience. The guides are great, know the river, and treat each raft trip to the people taking the ride. Really liked the trip today with Devin. Great rafting/camping experience. I camped 2 nights and rafted the New River with Jake and had the best time. He's a great guide and a riot, so it was a very entertaining rafting trip. The campgrounds are pretty nice too. Breakfast is ok with ok coffee, a couple types of donuts, and english muffins with jelly/butter. Lunch on the river was pretty nice considering we were eating it on a flipped over raft. It was a make your own sandwich bar with pasta salad, potato salad, carrot/celery sticks, chips, salsa, and chocolate chip cookies. Dinner was pretty nice too if it was included in your package. Everyone gets steak. I don't eat steak so they were able to find me some chicken last-minute to cook up for me. I think I saw someone get salmon as well. You also get a roll, baked potato, green beans, and brownies. Overall, the place is pretty nice and the people are great. You can pitch a tent pretty close to your car or there are tents on platforms, cabins, etc you can rent. The showers weren't bad either. They had hot water which was much appreciated. We also swung by the convenience store to buy firewood (which was $3-something) and they threw in matches for free. And the saloon had a pretty good selection of beers. This was a great way to spend a summer weekend. I'd highly recommend it. read more

Went for a birthday trip fall of 2016 on the Gauley River. We did the lower Gauley one day trip. We arrived full of excitement and thrilled to be going on a first rafting trip. Due to the fall season, we rented wet suits and jackets, I highly recommend getting both for any weather below 75 degrees. We were 100% satisfied with our trip! The company was great at adjusting for your needs or providing recommendations based on what you wanted out of the trip. If you wanted to get wet, you could. If you wanted to stay dry, that was fine too (although not as fun!). Our guide, Carla, was extraordinarily knowledgeable and kept us interested throughout the trip. She was very good about informing us of upcoming rapids and how to swim to safety if necessary. We were in a 6 person raft and chose to sit in the front. We loved it but would not recommend it for anyone not wanting to get wet. I am planning on going back in the spring and with a larger group! We purchased a 2 night camping and one day rafting expedition on the Lower New River. While we thoroughly enjoyed our rafting trip, our camping experience was a nightmare! We traveled all the way from Michigan, which was over a 10 hour drive. We set up camp at Bear Claw, and enjoyed the pool and dinner. We returned to our camp site about 10 pm to start getting ready for bed, since we were exhausted from the heat and the long trip. One group of about 20 campers was just obnoxiously loud. They were all in about their early twenties, and even late teens. By loud I mean they were playing their music so loud our tent shook, playing drinking games, and at one point screaming at each other until 4 IN THE MORNING!!! I would compare this experience to camping at a fraternity party. I reported this to the attendant that was on night duty, to which he informed me several other campers had complained as well and he had talked to this group four times already. He mentioned he had threatened to kick them out. My frustration is that he had talked to them 4 times and they still did not stop until 4 in the morning. It seems like after the first warning action should have been taken. I believe that some type of rules and protocol should be implemented to save other campers from this disappointing experience. Our rafting trip check in was at 8:30 am, so we had to get up at about 7, which left us with less then 3 hours of sleep. This lack of sleep could have been detrimental to our safety when attempting to white water raft. I found this group of campers to be extremely disrespectful and rude. We were so severely disappointed in the experience with lodging at your facility that we did not stay our second night, and opted to leave instead. We will never go through the lodging and stay through your company. While my husband and I enjoyed our rafting experience, and will most definitely raft again with our friends in the future it will not be through your company. In the future we will look into competitor's expeditions. read more
