The answer is the local dump referred to Solid Waste disposal. It shares an entrance with the recycling center but has a separate driveway where your vehicle gets weighed pre and post drop off. The charge currently is a reasonable 3.5 cents per pound. Even though all my items were weighed down and ruined by water the charge is still reasonable. Thanks Shelby County for providing an alternate to recycling when the items can't be sorted for recycling.

It means that we can reliably dispose of large pieces of construction debris in a responsible manner. The Waste Reduction Center is nothing great to look at but again it's a place to dispose of large garbage. When you pull up with your truck, you're directed to the appropriate area for the waste you're wanting to offload, such as electronics, tires, appliances, tree limbs, construction debris, and furniture. You pay depending on the size of load and type of items. For one pick-up truck load, it costs $60. You then pull up to your area, and that's when you really get to let loose any pent-up energy. My husband and I unloaded the truck by flinging the wood and debris into the large heap. We created a game where we tried to see who could fling the wood the farthest. (He won.) My only wish is that they were open later. Their hours are Tuesday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Rather than wait for one of the semi-annual junk pick-up days, this is a great alternative.

The annual Shelby County Hazardous Waste Collection is held the first Saturday in October. Early in…read morethe summer we were cleaning our garage and looked for options in getting rid of car batteries, a tractor battery, 30+ yr old road flares, 5 gallon containers of deck sealer, transmission & hydraulic fluid, as well as a variety of bug sprays and dormant fruit tree sprays. We found there are few affordable options so we held all the items for this annual drop off event. For a full month before the event our local newspaper had weekly ads with precise information on items that are accepted, a definition of hazardous waste and a list of items that are not accepted. The ad also had contact information should you have any questions. The date, time and location was clearly stated. The date of the event we loaded up our station wagon and went to the drop off. There were probably 30 cars in line ahead of us and I thought it may take hours for us to have our turn to unload our car. I was wrong. The event was very well organized with plenty of staff in all the key spots. As you approached the actual drop off there were city employees verifying how you heard of the event, that you were a resident of Shelby County, the types of things you were dropping off and how far you travel to get to the site. This information helps them file for the grant that pays for this event. Then we proceeded to the actual drop off area and employees brought carts to the back of the car and rapidly unloaded our very full car. Start to finish the process took less than 1/2 hour.
