Everyone associated with this clinic was great. Dr. McDougal is top notch. Followed him from Williamsburg.

I can swear up and down that any Vet you find at either the Rutland/Mechanicsville locations are…read moreprofessional, patient, and will give you the knowledge you need if you just ask and show concern for your pet. Dr. Kilgore took in my 3 year old German Shepherd and was able to reset my dog's dislocated right hip from a car accident a few days ago and we took him to a vet ER immediately. It was apparent they was less apt to listen to my requests for checking his hearing and accommodating his need for another person when they kept him overnight for monitoring after resetting his leg, so I was almost not surprised when his hip failed to reset. Dr. Kilgore, though, you can definitely trust, he listened to me, my concerns and allowed more of an outpatient appointment instead of keeping him overnight AND went above and beyond for us! He wanted to see old x-rays of my dog and compare how his hips were then v. now, talked through all options to me, offered to have my dog's recent x-rays sent to other dog ortho specialists better versed in one of his surgical options. I was even called to receive an update from him personally, discussing how it went and what time (same day) I could pick him up. He was able to successfully reset my dog's leg, placed it in a sling, gave me an extra roll of wrap, should I need to do it myself, and told me what to watch out for/how to alleviate some paw swelling should I find it. The vet techs here were also incredibly patient, optimistic, and great listeners to the both of us, even though I'm sure I was a bit of a rambling mess worried about his leg. My dogs are not just pets to me, they're a part of my family, and I have learned time and time again that I can trust the people who work here.

I had made an appointment to have an ultrasound done on my older goldendoodle to determine what was…read morecausing her symptoms she was having. I chose this center because it was easier to get to from Williamsburg versus the one in Richmond and Midlothian. 1st complaint in my opinion was I had to insist on meeting the Doctor wish I will refer to as Dr A who was performing the basic examination and ultrasound. I was told by the tech it wasn't their policy for the vet to come into an exam room and talk to an owner upfront. I found this very unprofessional not to introduce yourself and to personally explain the procedure and exam she was going to do & not to rely on just the info provided by the technicians. Ultrasound came back with two large masses meaning cancer and at her age there wasn't anything one could do for her so I decided at that moment to have her euthanized. This is where my 2nd complaint starts. Putting a beloved pet to sleep is one of the most difficult experiences a pet owner can face. I expected a level of compassion and empathy which unfortunately in my opinion again was lacking. It appeared there was little effort made to acknowledge the emotional difficulty family members were going through. I understand veterinarians handle these situations regularly, but for pet owners, this is often a devastating and deeply personal experience. A few kind words, patience and genuine compassion can make a significant difference, something as simple as I'm sorry you have to go through this. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. After I decided on euthanasia they took my dog to the back room to insert a port into her leg to provide the drugs to euthanize her. They took so long in doing this making it even more painful & agonizing for us waiting in the exam room, it must have been a good 20 + minutes to insert this port. I've had many dogs in my lifetime and when they had to be euthanized it only took like 5-10 minutes. The only one who said sorry I was going through this was Ashley the receptionist who was extremely kind.

I also had both cats in one smallish carrier, which I know isn't ideal, and I didn't feel any kind of judgment. They also assured me that I did everything right for my cats - exactly what I needed to hear. One of my cats was determined to not have ingested anything, so they told me I could take him home. They also offered to keep him there for monitoring if I was worried. My other cat was definitely exposed. He was disoriented and agitated, with potential for a number of serious complications as the meds made it through his system. I believe it was Dr. Grant who cared for him, and he told me he had to be kept for 24-72 hours and explained everything they could and would do for him. All of the potential care options and prices were very clearly explained to me, and it actually ended up costing less than the initial lower estimate. Still a lot, but they didn't just pump my cat full of all the drugs on the list. Just before 9 PM that day, he called and updated me. He was incredibly informative and calming. It made me feel good to have left my cat there. Also, my cat hates vets with a passion, and no one was mad that he was such a terrible patient. They just modified treatment as needed and kept me updated. The ER doc called again the next day at 10 AM and explained why they wanted to keep my cat for a little while longer. He told me to call back at 4 PM. When I did, I only had to wait a few minutes and then he updated me again and said everything was 100% fine for discharge. I've never been more panicked before, and I don't think it could've gone any smoother than it did.

After I waited 2 hours, I went to the receptionist and was told that it could be another 3 hours my cat would have to wait. And could even be longer than that. They just leave you waiting in the room. Nobody comes in while you are waiting. You just sit. Was told that we had to wait just like a hospital for humans. I have never waited in the emergency room 5 hours or longer. There weren't that many cars in the parking lot. So thoughtless and inconsiderate. After I was told that it would be 3 hours or more, I called Virginia Veterinary Center in Shortpump. They told me to come right over. As soon as I got there, they took my cat's vitals and told me they would take us back. One half hour later, they brought us back. We waited another 20 minutes for the doctor. He came in. Did an exam and 10 minutes later my cat got fluids in her for about an hour. It took 3 hours tops. I have to be honest with you. I wish I could have given a zero star to Blue pearl. There is absolutely no reason that anyone should have to wait 5 hours or more for an emergency pet hospital to be seen by the veterinarian. Unfair and scary, worrying for your pet around people who obviously don't care if you are there or not. A total waste of time.

Dr. Stratton makes sure to take as much time as is necessary with every patient, explains things very thoroughly, and is just all around a wonderful person. Dr. Hall is also super nice, patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. The front desk workers and the vet techs (I'm blanking on names right now, though I think one is named Chelsea and one is named Emily) are all wonderful. I've legitimately considered going in either by myself or with one of my cats just to say hi and chat and share kitty lovins. Their prices are also incredibly reasonable. Even for bigger things, like a cat dental cleaning with extractions and X-rays, is less than $2,000, while the same thing at other places I looked was $4,000-5,000. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
