This is definitely a family friendly rafting adventure. My whole family ( kids 11-18 yo) had so much fun. We went last Tuesday and went back again on Thursday. AMAZING TIME! Don't say there's nothing to do in Bakersfield when there are places like River's End Rafting! Made a special trip to Bakersfield just to go whitewater rafting and it was such an EXCITING experience! When we arrived at 1 pm, the weather was already blistering hot. The price is usually $40 for first-timers and $25 for repeat visits. We came in on a weekday with a Groupon so our first time was $25 per person anyhow. The meeting area was an open area with overhead roofing and water spray fans. The check-in crew were pretty friendly and we got to meet our guides, Carson and Faith. Able to pose for photos next to one of the buses and stack of large water rafts. I think we stuck around for at least half an hour before boarding the buses because there were a few latecomers who still were able to participate. Rode the bus to the Kern River and given safety instructions by our guides. If you swim in the water, you MUST point your feet toward the direction you are heading as if you are lying in bed reading your favorite novel. After putting on my life preservers, I treaded gingerly onto our raft! HERE WE GO! The raft started moving and it was a strange feeling to be paddling this unstable rubber boat. We approached another raft. We started splashing the other raft because it is the start of a friendly raft war! When we approached areas that were turbulent, we'd perform some special maneuvers like paddling forward on the right side while paddling backwards on the left side which would cause our raft to spin while going across the rapids! WOAH! That was HELLA FUN! When we got to calmer areas, we were offered to get out of the boat and float/swim with the current. Well, who can resist such an offer? I got out of the raft and floated with my feet leading the way. WOW! The water is pretty cold in this hot weather! We reached the halfway point where we did a couple water games. The first was a game like musical chairs except you hold onto your paddle. The guides will call a number - 1, 2, or 3. You leave the paddle upright on the ground and let it go from your hand. If the number was 1 or 2, you have to grab the paddle to the left or right of you from your neighbor. If the number was 3, then you had to spin around and grab the paddle you were holding before it falls to the ground. If you cannot grab a paddle before it falls to the ground, you were eliminated. I held on for a several rounds before being eliminated but it was still great! The other game was a makeshift water slide by flipping the rubber rafts over. You run towards the makeshift slide and jump onto the underside of the rubber raft and slide into the water. I tried not just once but twice! Some people didn't have enough momentum and was stuck in the middle. However, I slid in head first on the first attempt and also tried a fancier maneuver by sliding on my back head first on the second attempt! AWESOME! We were hesitant to go rafting initially but firm believers in this rafting experience! Next time I am in the area, you know where I'll be! RAFTING! read more

We were a group of 12 that did their signature 2hr The Blaster package. When I did my research, they were one of the more affordable ones on the Kern River. If you're more of a thrill seeker this package won't be for you. But it's definitely safe for the kids and beginners like us. It was an easy ride down the river with a few more exciting spots. It starts off with a short bus ride to the starting point where they do a safety briefing and then we get to take off with 1 guide to each raft .There were a couple spots we were allowed to jump off the boat and float ourselves. It was 110 outside and the water was super cold and refreshing. About midway through, all the rafts parked on a small sandy area and we did the "slip n slide". They turned a raft upside down and we ran and slid off it and into the river. At the end you hop back into the bus to the starting point. Everyone had lots of fun and it was definitely worth it. An amazing experience for some first time rafters! Bradon was our guide and made sure our group felt safe and had a great time. He even got in the water and swam with us and taught us a fun trust game with the paddles! As an aside, we got locked out of car, and the entire team stayed with us for *3 HOURS* while we waited for Triple AAA, and made sure we departed safely. Megan not only called Triple A for us and handled all the affairs (as our phones were also locked in the car), but also provided us with snacks and water. It was my first time white water rafting, and I decided to take my friend and brother along. I was looking forward to two hours of fun and excitement, but that wasn't exactly what I got. While the experience was pretty fun, it certainly wasn't as exciting as I was expecting. There was only really one short part of the river that was kind of thrilling, but that was it. Most of the it was just like going through a lazy river, except you had to paddle yourself. The safety talk was not very helpful. The guide that did it did not talk loud enough for all of us to hear and seemed very annoyed with the task. Our guide was Matteo and he was great. He did a good job keeping us entertained and it was easy to see that he knew what he was doing. Partway through the rafting experience we all pulled over on a lawn to empty water from the rafts and play some games. The game was pretty fun and I enjoyed the slip n slide that they made, but I certainly was not expecting it. It seemed like it was just a way for them to kill time. There was a bit of a mood damper that occurred there though. While Matteo was leading the game, another guide was helping him, but I guess it was supposed to be a one-man job. The guide that seemed to be the head guide or manager (the same one that did the safety talk) came over and grabbed the other guide by his vest and dragged him out of the circle to yell at him for not doing his job. I thought that this was very unprofessional and that grabbing him by his vest was completely unnecessary. They sell pictures once you return from your rafting experience, but they are extremely overpriced. Plus, they didn't really show the people in the middle or back of the raft. The girls working at the front were very friendly and helpful, however, which made for a great check-in experience. I won't be returning. I would much rather take my money somewhere else and get a more thrilling experience. read more

What a great experience! All the staff are knowledgeable, super fun, and dedicated to provide you with the best river rafting experience. This was my first time and I found the rafting and more turbulent areas to be easy, there were a couple families with kids. In total there were about 6 rafts with approx 6 people per raft (plus guide). Along the way there are areas where you can float, and engage with other rafters; great group of people on our trip, lots of fun splashing each other and just general hilarity. Recommend leaving a good tip for your guide, they are really hard working. Also suggest buying the professional pictures RER takes along the river. I can't wait to put another trip together! More fun than an amusement park rapids ride! Not exactly thrilling, given that the river was slow and lazy enough that you can float down stream on your back. There was a section of the river where they encourage you to jump overboard and cool off in the water. Still, the rapids were jolting enough to get your adrenaline pumping. The office staff is difficult to reach. Be prepared to do a bit of phone tag as you try to reserve your spot but it will be worth it. read more

Thanks River's End for a fun weekend adventure. I have to start off by saying thanks to Darron (owner of this company) for being flexible with this recent rafting trip. I purchased a Groupon last year for 2 people, but was not able to use it last summer due to timing conflicts and lack of dates/availability as the summer drew to a close. As such, I asked Darron whether it's possible for us to use our Groupon voucher for this summer and he gladly accepted. We booked our adventure for this past Memorial Day holiday. This was probably my 4th time white-water rafting and given that I've been on category IV-V rivers before -- this trip along the Kern River was definitely more of a level I-II. They set our expectations though when we booked our reservation by indicating that there was a lack of good currents / water conditions were poor because no snow in the mts. earlier this winter. :( With that being said, we probably only encountered 2-3 fun dips along the entire trip. I was a bit disappointed, but my husband enjoyed his time. It was his first time there and he was having a blast. :) We got stuck on rocks at least 3-4 times, but our guide was a super star -- he was able to get us off the rocks in the river and we proceeded on our way. If only there was more water in the river! Then, we wouldn't get stuck on rocks so much, haha... All in all - the trip was well planned and organized, everyone had fun and experienced a bit of excitement. :) Good way to end the Memorial Day weekend... Tip: if you're looking for a rather safe & fun adventure for kids, then this is a good bet for you... If you're looking for category III, IV, or V conditions -- this is NOT the river for you (at least for this season!) read more

I am really an adventurous person and loved how much effort the team puts into ensuring that we're having fun. I LOVE the enthusiasm this group of river leaders are. And I LOVE GROUPON for offering this one :) Heres the rundown: +Check in is smooth +Bus rides to and from the Kern River are filled with the team telling corny jokes :) That is so cute. +The current is strong but not life threateningly strong. +We got a chance to jump in and just swim with the current. +Loved jumping off the tree during our break. I think the only thing that caught me offguard was that I thought the rapids would be much stronger but it was ok. I wished it was crazier but we can't control the water right? If you have a waterproof camera like me and really have a strong hand with it, you'll be ok. In the beginning, they kept urging us not bring it because it might get knocked out... which really it might but you'll be fine if you're careful. SO MUCH FUN!! It was our first time river rafting and it's great for beginners!! Our group got the Groupon for the Master Blaster which takes you down the river TWICE!! We went on 09/10/11 and it was the LAST day of the season so it wasn't too crazy. They say the best time to go is around July-August so we'll keep that in mind next time!! Honestly, I was sooooo nervous thinking about river rafting but it wasn't scary at all!! I searched YouTube of a video of what to expect and all I found were CRAZY white water rafting videos so... I created my own and you'll hear and see how much fun we had!! The lunch wasn't bad at all... just your typical sub, pasta or potato salad, cookie & a drink. Wasn't much time between lunch and then having to go on the river again though.... I wouldn't advice eating the whole meal or getting super full cuz you might feel sick lol. Portable potty was SUPER clean so hooray for that... there was an area to rinse off your legs or feet so that was also nice. I didn't even bother going into the changing area after our two trips down the river cuz there were too many people... changed in the car!! :) Pictures were well worth the price!! BUY THEM ALL rather than buying just one... and it's so convenient that they put it on a USB thumb drive for you!! If you're sceptic about going... don't think twice and just do it!! Our first whitewater rafting trip was such a blast! I even bought a waterproof camera so I could capture fun moments in pics. During the bus rides to and from the river, the tour guides tell really silly jokes and are extremely entertaining! :-D We enjoyed rafting down the river with our tour guide Adam and the lively bunch of people who were on our raft. The tide wasn't very high so we hit quite a few bumpy rocks. One of our raftmates was very petite and ending up flying out of the raft and floating down the river a bit, but we eventually got her back into the raft. There's an area where you can get out of the raft and swim/float down the river with ease. It's surprising how shallow the water is throughout most of the route. The view is beautiful and it's fun to see other people in inner tubes and floaties hanging out on the river. Rowing gets easier throughout the tour and you almost feel like a pro by the end of the trip. Get more bang for your buck with the $20 Groupon for the 2-hour adventure rafting tour. Whitewater rafting is definitely an experience that everyone should try at least once! Can't wait to do it again! read more

Went rafting for the first time in June, courtesy of the $17 for two-hours Groupon deal. What to bring: -sunblock -extra change of clothes (they have stalls where you can change afterwards) -water shoes (I wore sneakers, and boy those things got destroyed!) -cheap sunglasses (we ended up stopping at the Target off the fwy to pick some up) The place was pretty easy to find, as long as you follow the instructions on their website. No need to arrive super early for your schedule time. Just show up when they tell you to, or else you'll just be sitting out in the sun with nothing to do.There's plenty of parking once you arrive. Check in. Turn in your form. Once you have on your life jackets, you'll be bused to the river, which is about a 5~10 minute ride. OH! And skip the safety helmet. You wont need it. The river is not that bad =) Not to mention, you'll look silly and end up with helmet hair :P We were all given instructions at the river and were split up and assigned to rafts. Our guide was great! He told jokes along the way. Real friendly. Knew the river well and he definitely knew what he was doing. We swam, play games, paddled hard, drifted down the river, did the slip and slide... They will also have a photographer placed along a section of the river to take your photos for souvenir. So make sure you paddle hard and put on a tough rafting face for the camera! The actual time spent on the river itself was probably 45 minutes, which is pretty good in my opinion. If it went too long, I think it would be too strenuous and leave a bad first impression of white water rafting. I had a fantastic time. Without a doubt, this is the company you want to go with if it's your first time rafting. I can't wait to go rafting again! read more

This experience was awesome! We went on on Monday which made all of the options cheaper. There were 8 of us and we all chose to do the Master Blaster. It's 2 hours down the river, break for a lunch in the deli and then another 2 hours down the same stretch. All of that on a Monday cost $65 instead of the regular $80. The water was higher than usual and the rapids were a blast. You even get the chance to swim and float down some of the Rapids outside of the boat of you want. The second round through it was just our group so our guide let us stop and swim, hang out and ever use a rope swing off a bank. Let me first start by saying that the owner, Darren, will go above and beyond to make sure you have an incredible time. He has hired staff that will make your experience a great one. I proposed to my girlfriend(now fiance) on this trip and the entire River's End team helped make it possible. My group was lucky enough to have Sarah as a guide. She has been competitively kayaking since she was younger and you can tell she really loves what she does. I went with another couple( in our 20's) and they had a blast as well. We did the Master Blaster(highly recommended). It came with a Deli style lunch which was delicious. We headed back for another 2 hour ride after lunch. This time around we felt more adventurous so we went down the rapids standing instead of sitting. It adds a little more excitement as I almost was tossed out. We will definitely be returning for another day trip and may even try out the Kayak school they offer. It looked like a lot of fun as well. This place is GREAT for families.
