Some years ago, I'll say about 5 or so, I went with my friend Jeremiah to try one of the places that had been in Derby for some time that we just hadn't gotten to. We sidled up amidst a lazy midday sun and got ourselves seated. The place was eminently local and had a long menu with a lot of options. We, being the ornery high schoolers we were, were enamored with two things: hush puppies and something called a "pickle and onion sandwich". I couldn't, for the life of me, tell you what else was supposed to be on it, but I could, for the life of me, tell you it was supposed to have had more than just pickles and onions. We ordered the puppies and the sandwich, both of us intrigued by the idea of pickles and onions as a central sandwich theme and the waiter, in their horror, agreed to deliver. I cannot understate our shock at the plated monstrosities that landed before us. What had been delivered to each of us was a centralized mound of raw onions and pickles carefully sandwiched between two slices of bread. Jeremiah, smartly, had at least asked for his to be toasted. I, stupidly, did not. Nonetheless we ate our sandwiches and puppies in full and I have to admit that neither of us really minded our odd meal at all. I still wouldn't recommend you order a pickle and onion sandwich, anyhow. The psychic horror inflicted on us at the restaurant that day is something we all might carry to the grave. Horrible experience, order for pickup was missing a major food item and had to return to the restaurant a second time. Staff seemed put out having to wait on me a second time. Upon returning home, both orders of children fried steak was pink and very under cooked. As always, a great breakfast! Plump well cooked sausage, perfectly cooked eggs over easy and the best service anywhere. The quintessential home town dinner. I usually eat at the Derby location since the 13th Street location was closed due to a fire. At one time I ate at the West location which was the worst meal in service I've ever had but I believe that that was sold to someone else and was only using their name thank goodness. We stopped here on our way home from camping for the weekend. We usually eat at the Riverside Cafe on 13th St in Wichita. This location has the same menu options. I ordered The Slop. This place looks like the average store front of a strip mall until you get inside. This is a mash-up of old-time diner, divey eatery, yet it is clean, cheery and looks huge with those high ceilings. Surprise! The proprietor was sitting toward the back, leaned back in a chair at the end of a booth. As we stood in front of the register counter, he hollered at us, waved his arm and told us to sit wherever we want. Just casual, like you walked into a friend's kitchen. We selected a roomy booth. The place was mostly empty, so I took a few pics. Up on the far wall is a chalkboard that runs all the way across the room, loaded with daily specials. Then, the waitress brings us a menu on top of that, so I took a few more pics. We asked for water. There are drinks, but I can't review them because we always drink water. The Saturday special was chicken fried steak and all-you-can- eat spaghetti and meatballs. I was going with that until hubby pointed out the giant burgers. There is a 3-patty Farina burger ( named after someone, no doubt) and a 4 or 5 patty. Hand parties, 1/2 pounders, no squished up pre-pattied things here! I tried the smallest, since I hadn't seen what the patty looks like and didn't want to overload myself with 1 and 1/2 pounds of meat on a big bun. That came with fries, also hand cut. Nothing frozen here! Worth every bite! Everyone kept walking by to see me tackle that behemoth! Hubby said the chicken fried steak was hand battered, so that is good in our book. This is one of those places that serves liver and onions, meatloaf, good comfort foods. You can bet we'll be back! A word about the bathroom. Charming! It looks like one at your friend's house, too! Has a window with a curtain in it, and the toilet paper was on a little metal stand. There is a long hallway down to it that has little wire racks full of local free magazines chock full of sales, advertising, pictures and other good reading material. I don't mention a bathroom unless it is charming and homey like this one. Hubby said the men's was " nondescript". He's lazy. Lol! I'm sure it was just as cute. Almost gave 4-stars because they can be slow to serve your food at times. That said, we go there once a week for breakfast. Staff is friendly, owner is involved, nice, and welcoming. One of my favorite places to grab breakfast in Derby. There's a nice counter to give a true diner feel making it my son's favorite place to sit. The waitresses are all very friendly and make each experience fun. Tucked into the old strip mall where the movie theater was when I was a kid, it's conveniently located within walking distance for me. Since it's located on K-15 it's a an easy stop for almost everyone. The portions are by no means small so bring your elastic pants. I'm looking forward to trying the pies in the future. read more

Every time I take my family there the staff is always friendly and goes above and beyond to make sure we have a good time. I was pretty unimpressed. I had heard good things about Riverside Café here, and it was busy the day we visited... But the service was poor, and the restaurant was extremely dirty. Whatever you do don't look at the floor or the ceilings... Especially the air vents- Unless you wanna lose your appetite. All of the light fixtures and everything we're just nasty, covered with dust. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. We had coffee and due to another appointment, and waiting so long to have our order taken... We had to leave. Good service and atmosphere but the food did not hold up its end of the bargain. Maybe better for breakfast. Home town pride is oozing from this little spot which I adore. The walls are decorated with WSU memorabilia, photos of Wichita thru the years as well as planes that have been built right here in the air capital of the world. I visited the Derby location with a party of 4 on a Sunday morning just after noon. The service as quick and courteous. They brought our drink orders out within mins and they had our food out in less than 10. I had the chicken fried steak with a side of hash browns. My other half ordered the 1/2 lb hamburger steak with eggs. We both walked out with left overs and were totally stuffed. The tab came to a total of $22.00 with tip.
