I've been on a bit of a Yelp hiatus, because, you know, life happens. But I had to drop a review for this business because they are THAT good. I have used Riverside Garage for a few things and they have always been fair and honest with me. Most recently I thought I needed new brake pads on my Rav-4, so I dropped it off for the guys to check out. They easily could have told me I needed new pads and sold them to me, I wouldn't know the difference, as I am not a "car person". They told me I still have a ways to go before I need new pads. I really appreciate their honesty. Then they found a nail that had been in my back tire and removed it and plugged it for a very reasonable price! Larry and Rick are the best. They are smart, skilled, honest and fair. But my most recent encounter tops them all. I have a Toyota RAV-4 that I was getting serviced at the dealer under a warranty that I purchased with the vehicle. Since I bought the vehicle, the driver's side windshield wiper hasn't worked well at all. Not only did it smudge the rain, rather than clear it, it made a rubbing noise that was driving me nuts. The dealer just kept changing the wiper blade, and charging me because it wasn't covered under the plan I bought. It didn't work. Larry solved the problem in an instant with his special frog hair steel wool. Wiper now works and unbelievably quiet. read more

As the name suggests the Riverside Garage is a mainstay in the city of Riverside Illinois and surrounding neighborhoods. I've been coming to them for years for general service, but Rick and Larry and the crew recently went out of their way to help me with a problem my old 2001 Nissan had with the emissions control testing people. I took the car there initially because my malfunction light indicated a problem with my emissions "EVAP" system. The Riverside Garage crew took care of that immediately with no problem. However, when I took the car in to be tested I learned that two of my eight On-Board Diagnostics sensors indicators were "not ready". There was absolutely nothing wrong with the car but it could not be tested. If anyone has ever encountered this problem then one would know that these sensors have to be reactivated by specific driving cycles and engine conditions. However, these same sensors can be VERY stubborn to come back on line. Now one might go to any repair shop and "throw money" at this problem, hoping that it would go away. However, Rick convinced me that my sensors actually were in working order and that we would have to work together getting the correct driving cycle and engine conditions to "wake them up". Rick then told me that it was "his goal" to have my car pass the emissions test. To make a long story short, Rick and the crew provided their "own time" and went out of their way to tweak the engine and complete the needed driving cycle until the appropriate sensors came back on line, thus enabling me to pass the emissions control test. Rick actually got on the phone with the emission control people to discuss the work performed on my car. My point is that the Riverside Garage crew seem to care about their customers. It's like the old community auto service center where the guys who work on your car are the same guys you might run into around town. They are like neighbors. And yet, their knowledge of the workings and repair of the modern automobile is second to none. Most importantly, these guys instill a feeling of trust in the customer. They sometimes might have to give you the "bad news" concerning your car, but based on my experience with them, I have always felt that their appraisals were unquestionably honest ones. As some other reviewers have mentioned, sometimes one has to pre-book a time slot a day or two ahead of time for an extensive repair. I view this as a reflection of their popularity, owing to their honesty and craftsmanship. A lot of people want to bring their cars here to be serviced regularly. On the other hand, I have seen Rick ask a member of his crew to interrupt their assigned work to take care of a customer with a more quickly resolved problem. So overall, I would have to say that I have had a good experience with the Riverside Garage crew, especially considering how unnerving taking one's car in to be serviced can be. They might give you "good news" or "bad news" but in either case you can believe that their verdicts are based on an honest intelligent appraisal of the problem. And besides this, they all seem like pretty good guys. read more

How does a garage with such great ratings botch a tire change? Brand new tires ($200 more than Costco, but we were in a pinch) had to be brought back to fix a leak the day after the change -- and it's still a problem! I don't know how you screw up new tires. Now I can't trust this place, have to get the job done right, pay again somewhere else. But, hey, maybe it's just my luck -- all the other reviews for Riverside garage are good, so idk. read more

I don't have a car, so I have never gotten my car repaired here. However, my parents have gone to Rick at the wonderful people at Riverside Garage for all car work since they moved to Riverside. They have sung the praises of Riverside Garage for years and always recommend their services to friends and relatives in the area. What makes Riverside Garage so special is because they are so honest and give fair, reasonable prices for work to be done. I can't stress enough how important that is for a mechanic! Rick is someone who you can really trust. Fun facts: Once I went to the Garage to fill my tires with air. I was a little confused on how to do it, so one of the workers came out and filled them for me. He was so friendly! Another time, one of the Riverside Garage guys drove our old '96 Previa backwards into our driveway because it was so close to hitting the 200,000-mile mark (and he wanted my dad to see the miles roll over himself). read more

I have been now going to Rick and Larry for the last 15 years and would never go anywhere else. Best service I ever found and so honest I never even ask for a quote anymore. As others have written a dealership will tell you need new brakes, water pump, etc.. You bring it in to Rick and he either finds out that you were given a sales pitch or finds the true issue and will fix for a very reasonable price. During my years of going here Rick has helped me out twice after hours with tire patches. I can't say enough great things about them. On top of being a great shop they give back to the community. I have been recommending them to anyone who lives in the area for years now and the folks who have taken my advice have also become loyal customers. I brought in our 2015 Acura after the dealer said new brakes were needed. Not unreasonable as the car had 50k miles. The guys checked the car and reported no brakes needed at this time; still had 10k miles left. They replaced the cabin filter for 1/2 the price the dealer quoted. The car does need tires. Going downhill. I've had 1 decent experience followed by 2 awful ones. Recently I needed an oil change, trans flush on my vehicle along with a wheel stud replaced. I Called and they told me they are booked a week out, I told them I'll wait as long as need be to get my car serviced and out by 3:30 the same day (I work in town and needed it right after work) they said no problem and I booked an appointment for over a week later. I bring the car in at 7:28 in the morning, come back at 3:20 with no calls or any communication and my car wasn't touched. "They were busy"... I wait for over a week for a fluid change and a wheel stud that should take 1.5 hrs total... all this after a coworker left a car with them and they proceeded with hundreds of dollars worth of work before getting an ok... do not go here, it's the only shop in town but just save yourself the headache and find anywhere else. read more

The best general auto repair shop there is. Rick is so honest, competent, and friendly that you almost want to take your car in for service. I do most of my own automotive work, but when I'm stumped as to what's wrong, or I'm too busy or lazy to do something myself, it goes to Rick. And it's done quickly, professionally, and usually at a lower price than I thought it would be. What a pleasure to be able to confidently go somewhere for a car repair and know it will be fixed right, the first time, with no unnecessary extras. And a pleasure to be able to recommend a shop to family and friends, knowing that whoever you send will be thrilled with the service they receive. I also have to mention that even beyond his shop Rick is a real asset to Riverside. He runs the Riverside Cruise Night car shows monthly in the summer - he's there personally setting things up before anyone else arrives, and he's still cleaning up long after everyone else is gone. He lets his lot be used for vendors at various non-auto-related town functions like art fairs, antique shows, etc., and he puts up his huge train set for the Christmas Walk and invites hundreds of spectators in to see it. A few months ago I was getting my car from Riverside Garage when Rick (Rick and Larry are to the best of my knowledge the two owners) mentioned his frustration with someone who just gave the garage a poor Yelp review. Rick mentioned the details and how he was put in a no-win-scenario [my words, not his]. My wife and I have lived down the block from Riverside Garage for 28 years, from our experience (again 28 years of it), Rick, Larry and their team have always been there for us 125%. We have taken all of our vehicles to them over all of these years and have never felt taken advantage of, ripped off, or not helped when we needed help. There have been times when they were so overloaded that we had to wait, but if it was super important (like me needing a car fixed before going out of state for business) they would try to squeeze us in, if they could. However, if they couldn't, they couldn't (life and business do not always fit into nice little boxes, complications do come up and are a reality of life), but from my vantage point, they have always worked very hard to juggle all the balls of trying to realistically meet all of their various customers' needs, at any given time. Back when their liability insurance would still allowed them to do it, they have even sent some of the team up the street to push our car down to the garage, when my wife didn't have an easy way to get it to them. There was even a time when our two oldest kids were about one (1) and three (3) [they are turning 27 and 29 this month] that we needed a new battery in the middle of winter, the Riverside Garage team had my wife pull up to one of their bay doors and changed the battery, with snow on the ground, while my wife and children (in child seats) waited in the car. I don't recall for sure, but very possibly one or both of the kids may have been sleeping. This great service really helped my wife out, so she didn't have to leave the car, and walk the two very young children home in the snow. Lastly, we had one family vehicle (to cart around 6 kids) we bought new and drove it until it dropped. As the vehicle got old, and we were trying to figure out if we should put more money into it, or get rid of it, at least once, and probably more than once, I had Rick say to me, this is want it needs, but "I don't want to take more of your money." "I think it is time to stop repairing and do a replacement." Having Rick, Larry and their team down the street from us, and feeling good about them not cheating us, and being on our team, has been a real plus in helping us to have less car stress in our lives. In the coming years, as Rick and Larry transition out, and let their team take over, I think they will continue to be customer satisfaction focused and more than fair with their customers. Most of the team have been their many years, one in particular has been their 33 years. This Yelp review was written because I wanted to, not because someone asked me to. My first experience with Riverside Garage: something was a bit off with my car, one shop wanted to charge me $150 to look at it and 'hold' the appointment. Luckily, I remembered a friend had highly recommended Riverside Garage, I called them, told Rick of my problem, he told me to come right in. He told me what it was-it was not a big deal-and sent me on my merry way for free. My second exerience: yesterday evening I put my keys and a quick note explaining what was off with my car. This morning about 5 minutes before 8am, I was called by Rick, who told me what was up as well as the price (very reasonable!!). About 3 hours later, I got another call-the car was done. Went to the garage to get brake pads and rotors replaced since the dealership had been recommending this for a while. Dropped my car off in the morning and got a call an hour later that brakes don't need to be replaced and only the shimes need to be put back in place. They fixed it and did not charge for anything!
