I have past by this place all the time and finally stopped by since I was in the mood for Mexican food on a Friday night with a friend. Started off with frozen margaritas (double) which was really tasty and huge. Kicked it off with guac and chips, which was solid. Ended up getting the 5 tacos, which you can get a mix flavor of. They kinda messed up on my order for the tacos but they fixed it after it was addressed. Tacos were muy delicioso. Also got the ice cream dessert with fresh chips covered in sugar and syrup. We've been overcharged twice by more than $10 per order per person. Both times, the waiter claimed that GROUND BEEF in tacos, for example, is an extra charge -- like shredded beef and shrimp are extra. We did not have shredded beef or shrimp. The first time, we overlooked it in hopes the waiter would get it, but twice means it's a standard scam. Last year we stopped going here after a horrible meal served for Cinco de Mayo, but things have turned even worse. The water in the plates turned everything soggy and the food was mostly tasteless. The ambiance hasn't changed and a television was blaring out baseball games of yore. They should stick to music, but don't care because we'll never go there again. OVERCHARGED repeatedly and food isn't great any more, therefore, cannot recommend the place. read more

It was very busy when we passed on Saturday night, got the chance to visit when they opened on Sunday. Vibrant, lively space with awesome lights on the ceiling of the main dining room. Birria tacos are a new addition and my husband's choice of taco. They serve 5 tacos, with onion and cilantro on top. Ask for extra napkins- very wet with birria sauce. I tried the appetizer miniChangas which is mix of shredded pork, chicken, beef in a lightly fried thin flour tortilla. Very tasty. Great homemade salsa and chips. read more

The food was decent. A couple things were really good like all the salsa and the guacamole. However, the tacos were just OK. I had steak tacos again. They gave you smoky sauce which was delicious but the steak seem like it was frozen. It was tough and tasted strange and the tortillas or just those corn tortillas you buy in the supermarket, the ones that are really bland and rubbery. They really need to make their own tortillas or the whole thing isn't worth it. Those tortillas really bring down the stars. They need to make sure they only cook with fresh ingredients and never frozen because we can tell. I would've given it 3 1/2 stars if it wasn't for the prices the place is very expensive. Came here after a long day of hiking and swimming in a nearby park. Nice outdoor space for dining, we were a group of 8 in total and that was the largest party size they could accommodate at a table. We ordered a ton of food because we were ravenous. The guac was pretty good. The chorizo queso was more chorizo and not really queso, but still delicious. The house sauce for the chips were also good. The main dishes weren't the best though. I ordered chicken enchilada with mole sauce and a carnitas enchilada with roja sauce. The mole sauce was way too sweet, it had a weird aftertaste as well. The enchiladas roja was really good though. Beans were a bit on the salty side but it was mellowed out with the rice. Staff was overall extremely accommodating and got us what we needed when we asked for it, though it did take multiple asks. Overall, it had some hits and misses but if you're really craving Mexican food, this hits the spot. read more

Food quality has gone far down. The soups had no taste and appeared to have the same ingredients just a different sauce. A couple of spoonfuls and we were done with these. lackluster soups. Then there was the fish ceviche that appeared red and translucent which is not supposed to be. The fish or shrimp are supposed to marinate for hours in order for the acid to "cook" the fish flesh to a white opaque consistency. We were afraid to eat it. Nevermind that the yummy lemony salty taste of a good ceviche was not there but replaced by a sweet orangey flavor. We have family members that make ceviche and were confused by this sweet marinate. Needless to say, no one ate that either. The entrees were ok, nothing special. The rice and beans were good; that's about it. The flan was yummy. Almost $200 worth of food and most of it was not palatable. The food was for a party, afterwards we were hungry and had to stop and pick up fast food. The place has potential. As a formal restaurant consultant, this place needs new management and proper training for staff. ( I see management because as a formal restaurant manager, there are just some things that should be noticed and handled with proper management. I went there for the first time since I am a new neighbor and for it being a local spot I was disappointed in its appearance and lack of. As a Latina and a connoisseur of Mexican food there are staple items that should already be executed. Aside from the rundown appearance on the exterior, that really just needs a nice paint job and power wash The inside is super cute def feels like a Mexican Mayan restaurant a definite ambience, but the Tables are so warn that the table murals are down to woodchips which was a complete turn-off when your food can't even lay flat on the table because the table is so chipped and water warped. As a big supporter of local community business, I have no desire to tear this place down or provide it with negative feedback to harm the establishment but I would love it if somebody could reach out to me so I can voice my concerns and opinions in hopes to have them corrected to help this establishment especially that it is now my local spot ( no I am not looking for any type of payment etc) I'm just a new neighbor who loves Mexican food and has years of restaurant service Who would love to help I also have no problem with updating my reviews ) read more

Not a good experience and cannot recommend after an early weekday dinner. Decor looks really cool in photos but in person the place seemed dingy. Lots of flies, which was offputting from jump. Restaurant was out of Coke, so instead I got warm flat Sprite with some ice cubes. Our server was great and the 2 stars are mainly a reflection of the good service we received. Tableside guac was OK, but we received about half of the portion you see in the photo here on Yelp. Al pastor street tacos were nothing special but not terrible. The meat was stewed in a tomato and onion sauce that was kind of bland and just didnt do it for me. My wife got the fish tacos which were bland and served with soupy black beans and a scoop of rice studded with what looked like frozen mixed vegetables from the grocery store. My daughter got a shrimp quesadilla and was satisfied. Ultimately this meal and experience was a disappointing miss, and at around $64 without tip it was an expensive mistake as well. read more

This was my first time at Riviera Maya Restaurant and I loved it. We called ahead of time to try and make reservations but they told us to come after 7:00p . We actually ended up getting there around 8:20p and they were still very busy. We didn't wait that long to be seated because the crowds were thinning out. They get a really good crowd. I started with their free chips and salsa. The salsa was good and spicy, plus I ordered a bowl of their home made Mexican cheese Dip as an appetizer. I should of ordered a cup because it was way too much. My drink of the night was their hypnotic Margarita with a sugar rim. It was blue and delicious, plus their pitchers of Sangria were really tasty. My family ordered their Ceviche and they loved it, plus their soup special for the day was a chipotle corn soup. I had a few spoon full of only the soup special, and it had a unique flavor, a creamy, smoky sort of cheesy flavor made with fresh sweet corn served in a large bowl. All of the flavors in this soup tied in really well together. I kept scooping the corn from the bottom of the soup. They have a pretty large menu with some of the basics, taco, chimichanga, burrito, enchilada, tamales, etc. I totally by passed all of that because I knew that would be really boring. I was looking for something different and I was in the mood for steak. I ended up ordering their Bistec Azteca from their favorites section which was a shell steak sautéed in garlic, topped w/green sauce & melted cheese. I ordered my steak medium rare. My steak was so tender, cooked perfectly, covered in yummy white cheese with a tangy slightly spicy green sauce with rice and beans. For dessert, that was beyond amazing, we ordered their Churros which included a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce and whipped cream drizzled with a raspberry sauce, plus their sweet chimichanga, a crunchy flour tortilla topped with sweet bananas and honey. The combination put me into a complete sugar coma. After reading some of the mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm glad I gave this place a try. My meal was delicious and fresh! I started with the Sopa Negra - simple black bean soup with onions and cream fresca- tasty and warm! I followed this with a perfect huitlacocha quesadilla - it was nutty and creamy! and was served with a big salad that had radishes and avocado slices in it! Great spot for a date! My husband and I live in Dingmans Ferry where our food choices are limited. We decided to come into NJ to try it out. As Latinos we were really excited to have some good ol' seasoned eats!. We ordered the guac ( made in front of you), steak fajitas (large portion) and an array of street style tacos. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. The drinks were done right and the chips and salsa served when seated are AMAZING. The only "complaint" and I use the word lightly, is that we weren't given a heads up about how spicy the sauce that came with the tacos was. I love me some heat, my husband not so much. It was a shock to him when he tasted it. Coughing fit, red face and a slight loss of taste buds. I on the other hand LOVED it. It was spicy as hell but ooh so flavorful. ( The bright orange color should've been a dead giveaway) Over all, good food, fast service and decent drinks. Can't ask for more than that. We'll come back for sure. read more

A great experience all around. The restaurant is decorated with an authentic Mexican flare. The ceiling covered in twinkling stars is beautiful. We started with the chicken tortilla soup and then had the shrimp fajita salad. I enjoyed my meal and loved the homemades salsa which I added to the soup for some kick! In one word - horrible. I don't know how other people are giving this place more than 1 star. Maybe because there is almost no other restaurants nearby so at least it's some place to eat. Went here a couple days ago and was surprised it was this bad. Food wasn't horrible but I have had better frozen meals, atmosphere is sketchy. We sat near a window and was freezing the whole time. The wind was coming right through. They had to know so not sure why they would sit people by the windows. It's dark inside and must be purposeful because it's old old old. Not old in a good way, old as in falling apart. We had tres leches cake for dessert and it was inedible. Hard and crumbly tres leches??? They had some nerve even serving it. People wake up about this place. You're just enabling them to continue doing business like this. They won't see my business ever again. read more

I been going here for 10 years , unfortunately the quality of the food as been declining ever year. I went there today and service was horrible. Waited at bar for 5 minutes and no service. I couldn't even get a drink. But the helper brought me chips and salsa. That why the 2 star, also chips and salsa were not fresh but old. Also there was a older women tell one of the servers about specials and items she wanted taken care of. So they ignored me and did not ask if I needed a drink or food. Very disappointing and show a lack of caring. The training of staff needs to be addressed!!!!!ASAP!!! So I walked out with not eating or having a drink. Unacceptable!!! read more

Beware of scanning the checks QR code, it tried charging an escort service on 2 different credit cards I tried. After warning the restaurant about the issue, the owner called me and seemed concerned at first and wanted to work with me to ensure it doesn't happen again to his customers. I needed to cancel two credit cards because the escort service kept trying to charge them. Jesus the owner has been ignoring me since this happened 2 weeks ago. Obviously it was no inconvenience for him or his business, only for me to have to cancel two credit cards during Christmas time. This is sussex county NJ. Can't expect much out here. Food was ok. I ordered the garlic shrimp dish. It was pretty ugly but flavor was good. My mom ordered the nachos - it was basically 5 large chips with all the fixings grilled on top. Hers came with pieces of skirt steak. Again - not the prettiest dish but was tasty.
