Beware of scanning the checks QR code, it tried charging an escort service on 2 different credit cards I tried. After warning the restaurant about the issue, the owner called me and seemed concerned at first and wanted to work with me to ensure it doesn't happen again to his customers. I needed to cancel two credit cards because the escort service kept trying to charge them. Jesus the owner has been ignoring me since this happened 2 weeks ago. Obviously it was no inconvenience for him or his business, only for me to have to cancel two credit cards during Christmas time. I ordered a grilled chicken taco and a ground beef chimichanga. The food was very good. The service on the other hand was lacking. Pretty much ignored the whole time. The worst was the amount of flies inside. Couldn't continue eating it was so bad. You would have thought I ordered a side of roadkill there were so many flies. We had to hunt the waiter down for a drink refill and the wait forever for a menu and for the check. He was pretty quick to come back for the money though once we were done! Totally unexpected, but absolutely loved this place. The food is original, creative and not your typical TexMex fare. I've had very good Mexican food all over the place, and usually New Jersey is not one of the first places that comes to mind when thinking great Mexican, and Sussex County in general lacks in truly great restaurants. However, Riviera Maya completely delivers. It is delicious, the staff is attentive, the prices are extremely reasonable, and it's a place I actually thought of and craved while traveling in Arizona recently, a place where Mexican restaurants are like Italian places in New Jersey. We have been coming here regularly since Riviera Maya opened. Their food was always consistent, and the drinks well served. Now, the building, furnishings and seating are all run down and not cleaned well. The regular, long time staff is no longer there. Our server last night must have asked us 15 times " do you need anything else?" , not " how is the food, would you like dessert?". The food is now mediocre at best, and the sangria, which was typically our "go to", is now watered down, seemingly without any fruit juice, brandy, or liquor added. It's sad to see this restaurant go downhill. It seems as if the owners attentions are on other locations. I would have rated less, but wish this place were better. read more

Loved this place from the minute we walked through the door. Really interesting decor and lighting. Sit at the bar and order a house margarita - they pack a punch. The guacamole served table side is fresh and tasty, and you can even make it spicy. For dinner, I enjoyed their enchiladas with mole sauce. Their house salsa is also delicious. The food is decent but way overpriced for Mexican food, and especially for Branchville, NJ! Nice that they are doing takeout during Covid-19 but when we called in our order and added a 20% tip to support local restaurants, they failed to mention they also add an automatic 20% "service fee" during Covid. Very dishonest and we left with $70 of food for 2 adults and 2 young kids (way too expensive for Mexican food - come on, it's beans, cheese and ground beef!) for an actual price of $100! $100 should've covered 100 tacos! We were shocked and will not be returning or supporting this business again in any way. If you're feeling like you have to support local restaurants, be forewarned about Riviera Maya - they are taking your money without telling you. read more

This restaurant is a great little find on 206 in, what feels like to me, the middle of nowhere NJ. In our travels to PA, we stopped here for a quick lunch. Decor was bold and festive. Taquitos were freshly made and came with a salsa verde. The taco salad was stacked with chicken, so much so that I couldn't see the salad beneath in the taco shell. The fiancé ordered the steak fajitas and while he claimed that the steak was not great on its own, it worked when made into a proper fajita. The server was attentive with drink refills. read more

This used to be our FAVORITE place. Even during COVID. WHAT HAPPENED? If I wanted fast food Mexican I would go to Taco Bell. The pork was way too salty tasted like it has been in a chafing dish for too many hours. Not fresh like I am used to from this place. . I had to send it back which is something never do. In the near empty restaurant on a Tuesday night, I never got the guacamole and pico. It took so long for the waiter to check on us that it was too late for me to order so something else. Meanwhile the table behind me was told they were out of tomatoes for the guac. Really? ShopRite is 10 min down the road. Send someone. I am so sad that under new mgt this place has gone down hill. This is my favorite go to Mexican food place. The restaurant is decorated wonderfully. The people who work there are very friendly and attentive. As soon as you are seated you are given a basket of fresh chips and salsa. My go to entrée is the tacos placeros. You get 5 street style tacos with your choice of protein. Had a Mexican food jones on earlier this month,so I stopped in here on the way home. I don't know if it was post Cinco de Mayo letdown or something else but the service was lacking. The ambience is cutesy, all tiles and bright colors but the food didn't stand out. Not that it isn't good, it is for its location, northwestern New Jersey, but I lived in Texas for over 25 years so honed my taste at the altars of Tex-Mex cuisine and this ain't it. But admittedly I am biased. There isn't a large number of Mexican restaurants in the area so most likely I will be back. There is one other in the area. More on that another time. read more

Really nice to see some Mexican food in Sussex county, NJ. The wait staff was friendly and the ambiance is warm and festive. The margaritas are solid as is the fresh guacamole. I think some other reviews mentioned that it was overpriced but it seemed like we got a pretty decent amount for the price. One big problem that a lot restaurants have is that they think you need to put thousands of vegetables in the vegetarian options. This works for things like soups and salads but when it comes to burritos it's definitely best not to overdue it-- a classic bean and cheese burrito works perfectly. That said, I'm a vegetarian and my burrito had carrots and zucchini in it even though I ordered a bean and cheese burrito. It just didn't make sense. I don't think I'm wrong in saying that most people don't want these vegetables in a burrito. My husband also ordered a meal that was bizarre in its combinations. I think it's probably best to just do the classics well. That said, people seem to really love this place. read more

We've dined here many times. The food is great as is the service and atmosphere. My only complaint is that on the weekends it is crowded with customers waiting to be seated. We often can't sit at the bar while waiting for our table because there are too many children sitting at the bar. So we end up standing outside or in the entrance. Although it's not always enforced, I believe it's illegal for kids to sit at a bar. Better to go later if you'd like to sit at the bar while waiting for a table. read more

This is our absolute favorite Mexican restaurant!And we love Mexican food and have been to all the Mexican restaurants around here. The atmosphere is awesome with lots of lively decor. The food is outstanding. We always order the Nachos Locos and the tableside Guacamole. My favorite entree is ground beef tacos but I've never had anything here that didn't taste good. Fried ice cream for dessert (which comes flaming). I almost forgot to say how delicious their margaritas are! Juan Carlo is our favorite waiter. He will make sure you enjoy your time here. After today's adventure in the vile pits of hell that is the Newton Walmart, we finally hit up 'the Mexican place' that 'isn't the one in Netcong.' Glad we did. We went with the basics, not sure what to expect (no offense, locals, but some of y'all think HoHos is acceptable Chinese). I got the taco/chimi platter, ground beef and shredded chicken, respectively. BF got enchiladas suizas. By the time our food came, BF was practically drinking the salsa out of the bowl. He was a big, big fan. That set the tone: everything was fresh and homemade. BF asked for hot sauce, I, for sour cream. Instead of a bottle of Cholula and a dollop of Daisy, we got homemade hot chipotle sauce and...actual crema! Who ARE these guys?! Bottom line, pretty blown away. This time they get 0 stars (not an option unfortunately), but when they do answer the phone and take our order, they deserve 5 stars. Ok folks, let's think of one place you wouldn't expect to find fantastic authentic Mexican food? You got it...Branchville, NJ. Home of the farm and tractor. But, that's exactly what is there. I've eaten here twice now and the food is magnificent. The decor leaves a little to be desired as it looks like a Chili's on crystal meth, but that's neither here nor there. Actually, a nicely decorated Mexican place would probably be horrible. I've had the enchiladas and the Birria de Pollo. The enchiladas were astounding, but I can't stop thinking about the Birria de Pollo. It's a slow steamed chicken in a red, slightly spicy, broth with carrots. It completely rocked me. I couldn't believe the flavors and the perfection in this dish. The drinks are also spot on. The only gripe I have would be that they could be a little quicker getting the food out, but that's it. If it means the food quality would go down, than disregard I said that. Go here. read more

A TACO SHELL OF WHAT IT WAS AT ONE TIME. I visited Riviera today after work with co worker. This restaurant has never been great, but the food and service was always good. Pulling up I was surprised to see how run down the place had become. Peeling paint on what was always a warehouse looking building. A bent lamp post and broken tiles along the entrance. Our problems did not stop there. I expect a few fruit fly's this time of year, I even have them in my very clean kitchen at home. However the thousands of house fly's all over the restaurant and crawling all over the bar was disgusting. SERVICE.... All of the employees on cell phones just texting away. I watched two different tables get up and bring the check across the restaurant to pay. our drinks were never refilled and we asked for water two times before it was sent to us. Before you think they must have been busy, keep in mind this was a Monday at 5:30 ( 12 people in the place.) The apps took 30 minuets to come out and the entrees were about 25 minuets after that. FOOD. If the food took that long to come out it must have been made fresh.... Said no one who eat there today. While they do make there re fried beans in house, the dish much like most of there food was under seasoned and tasted like they sat all weekend. our shredded chicken had no flavor. I think they braise it in chicken stock and not much other then that. The rice was dry and over cooked. OVERALL. I feel bad for the people who think this is Mexican food. Take a short trip to Netcong NJ for a much better experience or if you travel to Montclair you will love the food. As far as this place is concerned. Yuck. Bland food, and very poorly made. I asked for a medium rare steak and it came out burnt, with the flavor and texture of shoe leather. Sussex county has terrible restaurants in general, so I have to assume that most of these 4 and 5 star ratings are grading on a curve. This was my second time eating here. The first time was very good. Guacamole is good and margaritas are OK (except they barely salt your rim smh). Today I went with my boyfriend for his birthday lunch for just some apps. We got nachos- which I wish I took a picture-Nachos de La Casa which were 2 TACO SHELLS split in half with microwaved cheese on top!!!!!! A pinch of iceberg lettuce in the middle and a pinch of red onion and tomato diced and literally 4 slices of jalapeno. It was pathetic in presentation and taste. More like desperate nachos I could make at home in a drunk stooper. We also got fried calamari which the sauce was good yet the calamari, weve all ordered calamari places before and every time you say WOW I'll never eat all of this! But at Riviera Maya they literally gave us about 15 tiny, soggy pieces on a bed of iceberg lettuce. This place needs help. Also the lights were pretty much so dim and they dimmed them more while we were there at 1:30 PM, I guess they need help paying their electric bill. Candles maybe? It was good, no doubt. Our server was attentive and hilarious and totally cool about splitting the check a million different ways. The atmosphere was fun and my group had a really good time here. The men in the group had also come here for lunch on the day of our visit, and I'm pretty sure they said they saw a bear in the back of the restaurant. Branchville/Newton/Sparta are not exactly meccas of cuisine, so I'm sure this place is phenomenal considering what's around. Truthfully, though, South Jersey has Mexican food on lock. read more

I had a frozen Margarita and it was just right, not heavy or light, just right. I had the ENCHILADAS DEL MAR which are two enchiladas filled with sauteed shrimp and topped with roasted poblano peppers onions mushrooms tomatoes and melted cheese. It was very different but good, the poblanos were hot at one point and I had to get more water but other than that, it was good. I also had a chicken burrito another time I went, and it was huge and delicious. If you are in the area and want something that is not expensive and love Mexican food, I would highly suggest you go in and have a drink and an entree. I have long sought good--even passable--Mexican food all over the east coast, to no avail (the best? La Tolteca in Delaware, but I digress). When Riviera Maya opened, I was skeptical but intrigued. I made a point of visiting early on, and I have been back many times. The layout and ambiance are mediocre at best, but the food; oh, the food. When it comes to Mexican food I think I have a pretty good handle on it living in San Diego for over 10 years and visiting most of the Mexican establishments there. As for this place, it is ok. The food is certainly not bad. Of all the different Mexican food I've had this place is average. Where this place completely fails is service. It took us 2 hours to have dinner here for a party of 4. We are talking Mexican where no plate takes longer then 10 minutes to prepare. Understaffed and they know it, yet this place perpetuates the problem. They simply do not care enough to do anything about it. If you are understaffed, the first thing you don't do is pack to capacity. The service here will really ruin your dining experience. Either way, if you go here you will get descent food, just plan on putting aside over 2 hours for dinner. 3 stars for the food, 1 star for the service, 2 stars overall. read more

Finally tried this place out a couple months ago..I live so close, so I've been meaning to check it out. The only "Mexican" food my hubby enjoys is Taco Bell..and Taco King way over in Manhattan.. so I decided to grab some takeout lunch one afternoon First, I wish they'd finally get some takeout menus, because last time I checked their online menu doesn't have prices. Speaking of prices, this place overpriced- especially for just grabbing lunch. Finally, I realize I may be the only vegetarian in Sussex County- but geez! The only thing I could find without meat on the menu was a cheese quesedilla appetizer or a vegetable burrito (reading the burrito description, it just sounded kind of gross!). Part of the reason I enjoy Mexican food, and most other ethnic foods, is because there are usually a variety of meat-free dishes. Not at Reviera Maya. As for the service, it was quite speedy and friendly. The quesedilla was soggy, but on the flip side they did give me TONS of tortilla chips and salsa, which I didn't expect for a takeout order. Second time here and this place never disappoints, their margaritas are OMG! They bring out fresh nachos with this salsa that's spicy BUT ADDICTING!!!!! I literally couldn't stop eating it! My daughters got the street tacos with grilled steak and a hard shell taco. My husband and me both got the pick your own combination I got the taco and chimichanga, very authentic and tasty. He got the burrito and chimichanga and you can pick which meat you'd like, I got the Barbacoa and grilled steak. He got the grilled chicken and beef.
