As we sat down, I was first struck by how quiet it was in the middle of a dinner service, then by how warm and inviting the interior was, and surprisingly so. Granted it wasn't chockers, service was quick and attentive and we got complimentary warm bread with three spreads in no time after putting our order in. Since I wasn't too hungry, we only ordered the walnut crusted cod to share. The food came out quickly. The cod was tender but the beurre blanc sauce just didn't add anything to the dish, which is a shame. The steamed fresh veggies (carrots and broccoli) were spot on and the mashed potato was nice. It was already getting dark outside by the time we arrived so we didn't take full advantage of the lake view, so that'll be another reason to go back. This looks like a family owned business which I have a soft spot for. I hope they continue to improve/innovate and stay open for many more years. read more

I'd been here previously when it was a different restaurant. The location is on Culver Lake with a beautiful view from the tables in the back room. There is also outdoor seating, but it was too chilly for that when we were there. The inside is airy, spacious and nicely decorated. The Carriage House is now owned by a couple along with a different restaurant in Barryville. The husband manages one, while the wife manages the other. They are Hungarian and German, so the menu at the Carriage House is an interesting mix of the two, along with some continental choices. Bonus: they have a liquor license and a nice wine selection. We had the pork paprikash and Hungarian Goulash. Both were delicious and came with spaetzle, though I think I'd choose the Paprikash next time...it was outstanding. We shared a carrot cake for dessert...also yummy. read more

Ok as I've said before staffing issues from COVID doesn't help BUT the only actual waitress was killing herself to wait tables and work bar she had three underutilized underlings that kept getting lost. Good looking facility with a resident mildew odor. Nice view of lake. It took a full 48 min to get appetizers the pretzels were good! Mushrooms were heavily breaded with not much flavor the chicken tarragon soup was bland and the crock was Cracked. As an entree I had the fish n chips there was so much oil that a gentle squeeze would leave a pool of oil on the plate very unappetizing they need some help! read more

Went here a week ago for our aunt's 70th birthday. The place is not huge, but it's very nicely done up. Everybody is super friendly, and we had a wonderful time. First off, the food was incredible, they have an amazing chef. We had baked brie, homemade salsa and chips, coconut shrimp, and an array of other hors d'oeuvres. Dinner was served buffet style and there was chicken franchise, goulash, fresh roasted vegetables, penne ala vodka and codfish. All of the food was expertly done and absolutely 100% delicious, my compliments to the chef. The bar service was quite slow though which prevented this from being a full on five star review. However, I will definitely go back here again as the food was beyond excellent. If you haven't been to this restaurant, I strongly suggest that you go and enjoy a wonderfully prepared meal read more

I received a gift card and during Covid, I called to get takeout. The girl on the phone advised I could only use it for dine in. So we were finally able to go this week. We went on a Friday for an early dinner. Four stars for several reasons: the server was nice, the food was great. I am conflicted on the rating because of several reasons: very few people working there so drinks didn't get refilled and food took longer than we are used to. However, the real issue was bugs. Yup, bugs. While it sounds terrible, it actually wasn't. The restaurant is located on the edge of a lake and outside dining is available. A couple moved their table from outside to inside and the woman told me it was because of the gnats. Those same little gnats were on the inside of the windows at every window inside the place too. They didn't come onto the table or near the food but they were there. It didn't seem to bother anyone but me. So tables didn't get cleaned off and service is what it is with so little staff. There was a flyer on the door looking for help so hopefully that gets better. The food was great, huge portions, perfect temp, etc. Before dinner came, a bread basket (after the app was brought) came with 3 little dishes, one of whipped butter, one of seasoned oil for dipping, and one of cheese spread. Perfection! Starting with the Moscow Mule, everything was delicious. I had salmon stuffed with crabmeat that was one of the specials with red roasted potatoes and balsamic vinaigrette dressing on my salad. Everything.was.perfect! The bread came out with a little platter of 3 options: oil for dipping, butter, and an unbelievably tasty mixture of a butter/cream cheese mixture with lots of spices mixed in. Been meaning to give this place a shot for a while now and now I wish I had sooner! We went for dinner on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty. The decor is very nice and warm and literally everyone said hello when we came in. Our server was new but very friendly abd attentive. We ordered the potatoe pancakes and shrimp brushchetta appetizers which were both excellent but the weiner schnitzel and goulash entrees where outstanding. Both the veal and the beef were very tender and the portions will satisfy the biggest appetite. Not only was the meal incredible but the prices are very fair. We were a group of 6 and we decided on this spot for a nice formal dinner to end our trip. The location is quite beautiful. We got a reservation to sit outside but unfortunately since the weather was a bit chilly we decided to stay indoors and they were very accommodating. I do believe they are short of staffing. There was one waitress running around doing a lot while there were a few young kids probably high school age just doing bus boy things but they never interacted with the guests. Due to this situation, it took a while for our order to be placed and for the food to arrive. However I do have to say, the wait was with it. The food tasted really good and their menu was well curated. A few of the guys wanted to get the steak but sadly they were out of steak which I thought was a bit odd. Overall, a decent place. The lady who was waiting our table was stretched thin with work but she was still very courteous and professional and did her best which I highly appreciated. Three adults for dinner looking to sit outside on a nice night w a beautiful view. Hostess says she cant sit 3 outside because she only has a table for 2 ( must be no extra chairs) and it may be awhile. No suggestion on wait time ( what does awhile mean?) or a suggestion to have a drink and sit by the lake, enjoy the view, and we ll let you know when a table is ready. Simple but nope. Lost revenue. Our waitress was great (our orders were perfect and drinks were always full) and location is top notch. The restaurant over looks the lake and offers a casual and peaceful dining experience. We came for lunch which came with a soup or salad, sandwich, along with fries or sweet potato fries all for a great deal of $10. Everything was delicious. This place is an atrocity. I would say it was the worst service I've ever received in my life, except there was NO service. After we were finally sat at a table after standing around for several minutes without anyone coming to greet and seat us, we finally made our way to a table. We were at the table for 5 minutes before anyone even bothered to come over and ask what we wanted to drink, at which point the waitress realized we'd never even been given menus. After we were given a round of waters, we then sat at the table for 20 MINUTES without anyone coming over to take our drink order. We really enjoyed this place. We went in the early afternoon and I ordered an open-faced grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese and fries and my husband ordered the pork schnitzel with spaetzle. For the appetizer we shared a stuffed mushroom that had bacon in it. We were presented with I believe three small containers that had Hungarian cream cheese, whipped butter, and seasoned olive oil. We also received a bread basket with delicious bread. The restaurant is very large with high ceilings. Music was classic crooner 40's Style music. I was teetering between 4/5 stars but went for 5 because well, covid and I will always support a German American business after living in Germany for 3 years. I loved this place when it was the blue ribbon and the owners kept everything exactly the same, except the menu, which brings some culture to the lake! They have a little bit of everything, German Hungarian American and Italian food. We dined outdoors on a Friday night and the tiki bar was full so we sat on the patio. They are running on a skeleton crew, so service is slow but be patient it is worth it. Our server, Noah, did a great job working alone with the owner to help the customers. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was awesome, I could have eaten 3 more servings. Bread was stale but the cheese and olive oil they served it with was good. But the real star here is the jager schnitzel sauce. OH MY WORD! They need to sell it! Absolutely spot on authentic German sauce! My chicken alpine was delicious too, yummy spatzle too (even though I was supposed to get a potato I was happier to have the noodles). I saw this place many times, and would like to give them a try. Yes, I did on Monday, 09/26/16 around 8 pm. There is not too many table there, cause it is late for dinner time for this neighborhood. Decor is OK, simple, not good or bad. They also have the table outside by the lake which is cool, and romantic. Variety of menu is not too many choice, but it is ok. We are order French Onion Soup, and Soup of the day which is Seafood Chowder, and Fried Calamari. Then our main in Face Up Grilled Portobello, and Jack Daniel Burger. You know what the food is not bad at all, and reasonable portion. Service is great. Nothing I can complain for the service. But, just food came out a bit slow of the first course. Great location. So nice to sit outside by the lake. But the positives end there. This was our 3rd time here this summer. We keep trying it because we WANT so badly for it to be good but the staff just isn't trained well. We had to wait 10 minutes before anyone gave us menus or brought water and silverware. Delivery of food was SLOW! When we got the apps no plates were brought and tables around us were getting bread but we never got ours. Our kids were hungry! Finally got our meals and goulash and paprikash were quite good but spaetzel was bland. Burgers well done (ordered medium). I really hope the owners read the reviews and fix the mistakes because we love having a restaurant on the lake. I just don't know if it will survive. Not many options on this side of the DE that aren't pizza, so because we used to frequent the Blue Ribbon (the previous restaurant that this restaurant was before), we decided to give it a try...that and the Flatbrooke Tap House was packed. Service was a bit...off. A couple of waitresses came to take out drink orders and requests for water and one came back with the water while a third waiter had to ask the manger if he should 'stay with us.' After getting our drinks from the bar, there weren't any more service hiccups. Good wise, we went with clams casino (special) and Bavarian soft pretzels with cheese dip...the clams were great and the pretzels and cheese were some of the better versions I've had (TGI Fridays, etc). Mains were also solid though this place bills itself as having Romanian food (it does), those items appear alongside Wiener and Jaeger Schnitzel, and right above Chick Parm...with Swiss cheese! That all said, I went with what was called a 'Deleware cheesesteak, which was a nice hoagie roll with really tender roast beef, with cheddar and horseradish sauce, and maybe some jus...countless places have ruined this basic and simple offering but this on was very solid and I would order it again but I might get the Jaeger as my friend got it and it was good. Only downside is this place closes at 10:0, but I think that means they stop serving at 10:00. Past that, good beer selection and nice portions of above average food. read more

I'm a big fan of the Carriage House in Barryville, NY, a restaurant that presents as a badly aging dive, but is home to the best burger I've ever had. The Culver Lake location is far from a dive--it's a great location with lakeside view. We ordered Bavarian pretzels and fried swiss appetizers. Both were stellar. I ordered a cheeseburger for my meal, and was a bit disappointed. The burger was served on a toasted Kaiser roll, which made the sandwich very dry overall. Fries are homemade with good flavor, but they weren't at all crispy. They tasted very oily. What was weird were the 3 sagging, wilting, rusted ceiling fans hung outside the entrance. Take them down. That's lazy. Also, the name of the former business is still on an etched glass door inside the restaurant and on the tables on the outside deck. This gives me the impression that Carriage House isn't planning on being here very long. I'll go again just for appetizers and to order my burger roll untoasted and my fries crispy. If that can't happen, I'll revise my review. read more
