Wish I didn't have to be the bad apple... I was received wonderfully actually, very nice people. The end result was just not good. Granted I came in for a color correction. So who knows if the prior color was actually the culprit. but...I walked out, the color was nice. The damage was not. It's been weeks...and my hair is falling out every time I wash it. And no, my hair has never fallen out before in my lifetime. I went to another stylist, since the stylist here never got back to me regarding a protein treatment to help the hair follicles. He said the bleach was probably left on too long, at a high number and my follicles are suffering because of it. Obviously, ESPECIALLY, with no answer back from the stylist - in which there are great reviews of on here - I will not be going back. Even Further Result - my hair is now grown out 1-inch on my scalp and because the follicles are breaking from the root...do you think I can color my hair for a while? Nope. Did I freak out? I followed Chris here from another place. He gives me a great no-nonsense guy haircut, and he's very good at communicating about hair and understanding what I mean when I talk about hair. He is always able to adjust my cut based on my needs without messing it up (like if I need my hair slightly longer or cleaner for an interview). He also makes for great conversation. The staff are very welcoming and nice, and the wine they gave me was very good (I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted it). I can't really comment on other stylists, but I highly recommend Chris. read more

I am sorry to have to write a bad review of this place because it's s nice salon, but I need to be fair. The staff is friendly, they offered me a cup of coffee. The girl who washed my hair did a great job, but come on, how hard is that? Then I had Ava cut my hair..... I realize that this is her first time with my hair, and everyone's hair is different, but she definitely failed to follow very simple instructions, and it has resulted in the worst hair cut in my adult life. I wanted a trim. This is what I said to her: I had a long bob that had grown out for a few months, I wanted to continue to grow it, and it was unhealthy, so I need it cut. I told her half and inch to and inch. She asked if I wanted layers, I told her a few were fine. I told her I wanted it to be easy to maintain. Here's what I got: She cut more than 4 inches off. My "layers" are 4/5 of the top of my hair is at my chin, and the bottom layer" about 1/4 of my hair, is long and stringy and almost two inches longer than the top layer. It looks horrible, and it was $80. I might as well cut that nasty bottom layer off and start back over with a bob. She was nice, I know she didn't go it on purpose, but she is not very good at cutting hair. This was a simple cut, nothing jazzy or fancy, and she did not do a food job. Sorry Ava. read more

I think this is a great salon for me. The owner and stylists have a friendly and professional attitude, without pretension. In fact, based on the conversations I had with the owner and my stylist, Maria, I get the sense that they pride themselves on being an establishment concerned with making anybody look and feel great, not just the rich and elite. Most of those sorts just want boring long layers that create horrible ennui and career dissatisfaction among stylists (as far as I can tell). Maria was a joy to talk to and has an interesting story. She is who to go to if you want a bob. She listened to what I wanted and was explained to me what we could expect the outcome to be with the amount of length we had to work with. She gave me great advice about products, styling technique, and color. The music was pleasant and very eclectic. At one point everyone in the salon started laughing because the John Williams Star Wars theme on. The girl who did my shampoo brought me some green tea. It was all very enjoyable and I'll definitely be back when I'm ready for a trim. read more

if it wasn't for the fact that my hair color came out okay, I wouldn't have much nice to say about this place. I booked through lifebooker.com because I'm looking for a new salon. First, I waited for 30 minutes for my stylist and was never offered an apology of any sort... and then told the assistant that I was "in a hurry." Well of course! You ran 30 minutes late! The rest of my experience there went pretty downhill- the owner (I think) smoked cigarettes right outside the door, which made the whole place smell, the washing area was dingy, there was a sign near where they mixed the color (apparently only for the stylists to see, but was fairly visible) that read: "People make money first, things second." Or something along that line. I would have rather seen a more customer-service philosophy, like "A happy client is a lifelong client." But that's just me. Anyhow, the stylist (who never introduced herself to me so I don't know her name) was nice and polite enough and as I said, my hair color looks fine. And because it was discounted, I didn't mind the bad service as much as I would have had I paid full price. (Or maybe that's why I didn't get good service? Not sure.) I've been to other salons with similar rates (Paul Labrecque, Dop Dop, Pepper Pastor...) so it's not like I'm a cheapo. I just know what experiences come with that price tag. Anyhow, for cuts and colors at $100+, I'll definitely take my money elsewhere. One last thing: The assistant there was incredibly hard working. He should get a raise! read more

She said she knew of a place that would not only deal with my neurotic hair issues but do a great job. She was right! First off, I love the style of this place... It's warm and inviting, and unlike most other salons, it's SMALL and cozy! A lot of other places I've been to feel like corporate salons with a slightly more stylish feel than Supercuts. This place has character, which I feel is very important to the overall experience. There's art work from local artists hung on the walls, a very friendly staff, and a great receptionist. And of course the location is top-notch... It really doesn't get much better than the West Village. Yes, the spa is wonderful, and yes I go back time and time again, but it's mainly due to my stylist. I've lived in New York City for over three years now, and I can honestly say I haven't found any stylist better for me and my haircuts than Pamela Canzano. I was lucky to find her here. She really knows what she's doing, always has a vision for how she see's my next cut, and works with me to figure out the best style for the upcoming month. More than anything though, she specializes in PRECISION. I've been to many stylists who are careless in many ways, but Pamela really takes her time every step of the way and always gets it right. Plus, she's fun-loving and a LOT of fun to talk with - Always puts me in a great mood! I'm a very easy-going, laid back, straight male in my 20s who has always gone to a barber (I don't normally get my hair cut at salons)... But the mixture of the low-key, trendy, and cozy atmosphere AND Pamela really makes for a wonderful experience at Rizza Salon. I would highly recommend BOTH. read more

After 8 years with Angelo Rizza, I finally decided it was time to write a glowing review for my friend and favorite hair stylist. I have followed Angelo from Robert Kree to Chris Chase to finally his very own salon. The salon is clean, friendly, and has a great casual, laid-back vibe. Pricing is great as well. Angelo has transformed my look many times from a long layered cut to an asymmetric bob and finally to a cool, new ombre look. The couple of times I was lead astray over the years, I learned my lesson - But Angelo always saved me! I have never had a bad experience at the salon. My review is really based on my experiences with Ava, but honestly-- the whole staff here is just great. I've been going to see Ava for over 5 years (I've lost count), but I consider her to be a friend at this point, as well as a dang amazing stylist and colorist. This girl works magic on hair. I have baby fine, medium brown hair. With Ava, however, I'm a gorgeous shade of blonde mixed with various shades of light brown and it actually WORKS. It looks like the shade my hair was supposed to be / should be, and it really brightens my face. As for the cuts, she does an amazing job layering and adding volume to lifeless locks such as mine. She is a GEM. And like everyone else there, she is super gracious and just wants to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I've actually broken some toes prior to coming in for a hair cut (and didn't want to miss my appointment- I know- insane), but they propped my swollen foot up on a chair for me and iced it while I got my hair done! Too funny! Other times, I swoop in stressed about work and about 5 min in, I have wine in my hand and I've completely decompressed. Rizza is my monthly sanctuary!!! Everyone at the front desk is also always warm and welcoming when you pop in and immediately ask you if you want something to drink. Bariola is usually in the back washing hair and she's so lovely--always friendly and takes a lot of time to massage your scalp and ensure you're comfortable. The atmosphere of the salon itself is also very calm and pleasant. They always play THE BEST music and the space itself is small, warm and inviting with huge mirrors and circulating original artwork on the walls that's usually also for sale. I really like how friendly the receptionist was here. I really like the way my color came out. I had partial highlights and a bang trim. Vanessa did a great job. The only thing was I really didn't like her attitude. I felt like she was judging me and making underhanded comments. I thought she could have been more personable. Everyone else seemed to be nice including the lady who washed my hair. I really thought it was a low key place. Nothing glamorous but definitely not ugly either. It was a great price also. Maybe I couldn't figure it out because I'm now a natural looking blonde (KIDDING-don't be offended blondes)! Anyway, I found this salon by Googling and trusting reviews I read. I promised myself I'd write an honest review after...payback. So here it is: This place is adorable. Every single person is sweet and the environment is laid-back and cool. Angelo listened to what I had to say, gave me his input, and then did exactly what I asked (natural looking blonde highlights that won't need tons of upkeep). Went here based on yelp ratings. I travel for work and have to get my hair cut all over the country. This was one of the best haircuts I have ever received period. Angelo took one look at my head and said "I can do a lot with that." I told him what I usually do, and he asked me what I wanted every step of the way. AMAZING salon! I scheduled an appointment for my hair to be colored, but due to time constraints and my own misunderstanding of single vs. double processing, walked out with just a cut (by Lennie I do believe, and he's wonderful!) Regardless of this change of plans, the cut - while subtle - was absolutely perfect. Just the right length was taken off and my hair feels so light and revived! Every other haircut I've had at other salons has been... less than stellar. Something about my hair must throw people off... Anyways, the blowout was amazing too, made me feel like a movie star! It's clear that the staff are very knowledgeable and are so so helpful and accommodating. Unfortunately I had to cancel the appointment I made in salon for the next day (an ombre with Angelo) because of midterms, but I will definitely be back in a week or two for it! Was looking to find a new place to get my hair done after going to the same woman for 5+ years - needlesss to say I was a bit hesitant to try something new. Espeically because I have blonde hair/highlights, which is very easy to mess up. That said, I came upon Rizza - and after reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to give it a try. I made the appointment online - which couldn't have been easier. Angelo was awesome - really took the time to understand what I was trying to acheive and made me feel comfortable. For me, it's difficult to explain exactly what I want, so it was nice to have someone listen and understand before just doing my hair. Some salons in NY can be a bit stuffy and stuck up - but Rizza was not at all. Very relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was so nice and attentive. The staff was great - offered me water as soon as I walked in, and even a glass of wine! The only "negative" thing I could say about Rizza is that the haircut was a but pricey for a trim, but that's NY. I will say, that the trim was great - and he didn't cut too much off... but I have a simple style, so I didn't think it was worth the money. However, highlights are definitely affordable and worth it. The color came out great. I will be going back! read more

Decided to try Rizza because i wanted a salon in the neighborhood and saw the high yelp rating. Don't be fooled. Angelo has a serious attitude and the other staff isn't much better. While i was there a woman came in to get her color fixed because she had asked for an ambre but Andre had put one big streak of blond almost near her roots and it was obviously out of place. He agreed to fix it but his attitude and distaste for the situation was palpable. He ordered Chinese take out during my appointment and complained about the food. Overall, poor taste and a low-frill uncomfortable salon. I was holding my phone in my hand, not even looking at it or texting and Angelo rips it out of my hand and says i need to unplug and relax. Don't be fooled. Angelo is a cocky mediocre stylist in a failing salon. read more

Came here last year due to yelp reviews. Originally Angelo was set to cut my hair as confirmed on the phone as well as extra time for the length and thickness of my hair. Walk in to my appt, he sees I have a lot of hair and immediately says his wrist hurts someone else will cut my hair and it will be great and save me $10. Haha! how unprofessional. Woopty do, $10. I specifically requested a SR stylist and not only did someone who was clearly inexperienced with thick hair cut my hair, but after requesting a longer appt due to having long hair the stylist ran out of time and had the inexperienced shampoo girl blow dry my hair and burn my head several times. Worst haircut I received in NYC. FYI you cannot charge tips either so bring cash. Def overpriced and under serviced. Would not return. Please also note the majority of the great reviews are from new yelpers with 1 or 2 reviews and 0 friends. Angelo was also really cocky, arrogant and obnoxious waltzing around saying this is great the whole time. Super awkward and again unprofessional with his "sore wrist". I came here for the good reviews- I have been getting my hair highlighted for over 10 years, it is pretty standard with me I have ashy-ish brown hair and it takes bleach really easily. The first time I came here I saw Jimmy- and he did a fantastic job. The price is reasonable (not inexpensive) so I thought, great this is the place. 8 weeks later I'm scheduled to return and I get a call an hour before my appointment "Jimmy is sick/want to go with someone else" I said no- b/c its generally about the person and was rescheduled for Sunday. I go in on Sunday and have maybe the worst mishap I've ever had at a salon- they used some sort of toner it was really awful and made my hair WAY to warm, almost red/orange? He knew he messed up and tried scrubbing vigorously - but the damage was done. He told me come back in a week and I can "re-tone it/fix it" but then they charged me the full price when leaving. I just thought it was odd- to admit you made a mistake and then charge someone full price? But whatever I decide to give it one more try- b/c it was so great the first time. Again Saturday roles around an hour before im set to go in I get a call- Jimmy is sick- want to reschedule. Ok no I cant I am going out later this has to get done so they tell me the owner is available and it will be great. Fine whatever. He spends the entire time telling me how amazing he was etc etc- took forever, had to put other clients in between because the schedule was all messed up and then he even took a walk in-in the middle of this. The highlights were not orange but there were lots of spots missing and it was not close enough to my head- literally had to go get them re-done 5 weeks later. I have no idea why the 3 stars but I gave it three try's and I'm done. read more

i've been going to angelo for the past three years. it started at robert kree (which closed a couple of years ago when the landlord decided to jack up the rent), i followed him to chris chase, and here i am, at his salon! i've never been one for the fancy pants, you're-lucky-to-be-here attitude that is prevalent at many of the high-end salons in the city. rizza salon is cozy, warmly lit. the only thing that keeps it from being to low key is the rockin' soundtrack that matches the mood of the staff. and the staff is a blast -- on my last visit, one of the stylists had me listen to a band that she styled for a shoot. in terms of expertise, angelo rocks. i haven't had a cut from him that i didn't like, that didn't grow out gently. he's funny, patient, and he won't steer you into any hairy disasters. in terms of price, i pay about $95 all in. is it expensive? maybe, but it's not overly indulgent. in short, great salon. read more
