First, Road Agents Roost is a great name! If you're unfamiliar with the history of Montana including the road agents and vigilance committees, look it up. It's an interesting part of history. Road Agents Roost is an interesting restaurant. The walks are filled with memorabilia etc. The food is German. There is a nice selection of German and Austrian beers. The service is good too. I highly recommend stopping for lunch or dinner. read more

I am a 2nd generation American-born German and raised around authentic German food my entire life. When I found out there was an authentic German place in this little historic town, I was so eager to try! We were warmly greeted by the owner, who quickly sat us by the window with a view of the street (which luckily for us, featured the seasonal opening parade). The decor is purposefully dated and antique laden, almost to remind you of your grandmother's house. It was cozy and warm. Picking between specials and the regular menu was a hard choice. I would suggest finding an alternative to lugging multiple chalk boards around to show the featured sides, specials and the beer menu to make it easier for the owner and the patrons. That said, we both settled on the Schnitzel Reuben (hamburger bun with pork schnitzel, kraut, thousand island and Swiss cheese. All meals come with one side. Meals came out relatively quickly and appeared glutinous. Definitely not what I pictured in my head. The schnitzel was too large for the bun but nicely breaded and moist. The Swiss cheese tasted great but there was a tad too much, and with the kraut and slather of thousand island, it rendered the delightful schnitzel breading soggy. I would have loved seeing that sandwich on rye or at least a hearty bread that could stand up to the weight...I could only use a knife and fork after attempting to lift the sandwich one time. The devils egg potato salad was a nice portion and tasted good, though slightly under-seasoned and over dressed. It would have done better with more seasoning and/or mustard, but was a nice side overall. Biggest downsides: prices are higher than expected, be prepared to slap down $$$ for the authenticity and tourist trap location. Second, is that they charge $3 for 1 can of soda, no refills. A soda fountain would be appreciated especially after eating a lot of heavy food. Overall, a very pleasant experience and wouldn't mind trying other things on the menu if/when we come again. read more

Yesterday, we ate dinner at Road Agents Roost, and were amazed at the selection and quality of the food. The food was clearly authentic German cuisine with large portions. We had sauerbraten and jaegerschnitzel.Both were excellent. The owners were very pleasant . Prices were appropriate as well. We'll definitely plan to eat there the next time we visit. read more

Oh man, what can we say, except this little restaurant was a prize find! Authentic German food was spectacular! My husband had the rouladen and I had a curry german bratwurst. German food in historic Virginia City, MT. Decor is antiques and very clean. You can tell they take good care of this place. We enjoyed the potato pancakes, brats, rouladen with 2 sides each and a Huckelberry vinegarette on the salad. Everything was excellent and filling. read more

We've passed by this place many times and finally stopped. A quaint place featuring authentic German food right on main street in Virginia City MT. The town itself is impressive but if you stop, don't pass up Road Agents Roost. Maggi and Rose run a fantastic establishment. We went on a week night in November and were treated to wonderful, personal service, great German beer (they also have wine) and an exceptional meal. I and another guest had the tour of Germany which consisted of a brat, rouladen, sauerbraten and a potato dumpling plus two sides. More than enough food and it was excellent. Another had just the rouladen and another had to pork schnitzel. We started with an order of perogies. I don't like perogies. These were excellent. I can't say enough about this place and the owners. We won't let so much time go by in the future. We will be back. read more

OMG fantastic food! The owner/cook is so friendly and fun! I had the pastey with red cabbage; delicious! My daughter had perogies and noodles and her husband ordered the Reuben sandwich all with excellent flavor and huge portions. Finished it off by sharing huckleberry cobbler with cream! We stopped in to have lunch, the place only had 2 other tables with guest besides use. We were a party of four ladies. We ordered our lunch, when the waiter brought use the check, we asked to split it. I said I had the cheeseburger and water so my total is $17. He looked at us and said I'm not good at doing this, I will be back. He walked over to the counter and started doing the math. Meanwhile, the waitress walked over and took over splitting the bill up. Another table of guest were seated next to where she was working, one of the guest knew her and said hello. The waitress proceeded to tell the guest that we were rude because we asked to split our ticket and she couldn't talk to her and do math at the same time. The guest all looked over at us, we were not rude at all, we just asked to split the ticket. When the waitress brought the ticket over, she had already added their gratuity at a 40% rate. For a party of four people. When I asked her why the amount was so much she yelled at us, I simply explained that my cheeseburger and water was $17 but she was trying to charge me $27. All of the tickets had the same problem. She then grabbed the ticket and her credit card machine and went back to the counter. When she came back, she said that somebody had messed up her adding machine and that she had mistakenly added too much to our bill. She was then talking very quietly after she had yelled at us and embarrassed us for doing nothing, except for trying to have a nice lunch at a restaurant. The food wasn't half bad, but the service was horrible and completely uncalled for. There was no sign stating they didn't split bills. Splitting the bill when four ladies, go to lunch together is extremely common and not considered rude or uncalled for. She never apologized just lowered her voice. I do not recommend this restaurant whatsoever. There are so many nice restaurants in Virginia city. Skip this one and go to one of the other ones. read more
