It literally tasted like cheap canned tomato paste. Gross and certainly doesn't blend well on a gyro. The lamb meat itself had a decent taste, but the way it is served makes it difficult to eat in a pita. Gyros are typically chopped or shaved lamb which makes it easier to eat and helps ensure you're getting more lamb per bite. Served in these strips, it was just falling apart and not blending with the feta. The fries...terrible. Just terrible. $6 to sub truffle fries which seems like too much but I hadn't had them in a long time so had to go for it. Listed in subs it simply says truffle fries, so I didn't know they were going to be covered in liquid cheese. They ARE listed in appetizers with the full description but I didn't look there until after bc I didn't order an appetizer. The cheese was awful, completely overwhelmed the TINY bit of truffle taste, and SO salty! Take a look at the picture and decide for yourself if the gyro and fries is worth $23. I eat a lot of gyros, and this being the most expensive one I've had is the worst. Heads up that they charge a service fee. After reviewing the menu we chose to bypass an appetizer for fear of just getting too much food and not finishing our dinner . After I told my girlfriend how good whitefish is in Michigan we both ordered that instead of the salmon or short ribs that also looked enticing. . Before our entree was served we had the warm bread and garlic butter that was terrific and tempting to eat the whole basket . Our dinners were served very quickly even though the restaurant was sold out . As we took the first bites of the white fish I was extremely disappointed . The breading had absolutely zero seasoning or flavor . The fish was flaky and cooked perfectly but the breading was completely flavorless taking away from the fish. Neither of us finished the dish and my girlfriend tried adding salt just to get some flavor but it didn't make it any better . I was going to order dessert but we were so disappointed after our dinner we chose to bypass dessert . . I did order a coffee since they didn't have cappuccino. I will say the coffee was very good , but what good restaurant doesn't have a cappuccino machine . As a side note the bathroom very nicely decorated in old wine box shingles on the wall and was very clean . The kind of place where there is not salt or pepper on the table but none of us felt the need anyways. Attentive service from staff who are clearly patient with each other needing to navigate the narrow access back-and-forth from the storage/prep/kitchen area to service including outside. Honestly the only thing that would have been better is if they had not permitted a couple to stand near the bar after it was full and block the only walking path causing staff to need to weave between all the tables. It was pleasant and, most importantly, quiet enough to allow easy conversation with your fellow diners across a table or booth. Second in importance to my wife and I during our most recent visit to Southwoods was the food. My wife got the cod and shrimp special and said it was the BEST cod that she had ever eaten - and she loves her fish - and that the shrimp was also very good. I also felt the liver and onions were among the best that I have ever had. And the quantities were great - with both my wife and I taking half our meal home to eat for dinner this evening - and the prices were more than fair. But, most importantly to us was the service! We were served by Libby and she was FANTASTIC! She took care of all of our requests, and kept our glasses filled, while never being intrusive! On a scale of "10", I will give the ambiance and the food the maximum score of 10", but - ala the movie "We Ate Spinal Tap" - I am giving Libby an "11"! I almost said "rewarding Libby with" instead of "giving", but I feel that we were the ones rewarded by her service. We have eaten here before - though not often enough - and will continue to do so.
