The cancellation policy is a an absolute trap. You have to be there on the exact day to remove your lock and do a walk through. One day before of one day afterwards and you will be charged another month. I went in and signed the intent to vacate, and was suggested to by the employee at the front desk to leave a key for my lock so they could remove the lock when necessary. All the notes of our discussion were written on the intent to vacate note. Per their 10 day rule. And still they charged me for another month. I had already PREPAID the month and I was 3 weeks before the renewal day of that month. So don't trust them if you can be there on the Exact 10th day NO EXCEPTIONS. Whatever they tell you when signing up IS A LIE. Totally False.!!!!! Use someone else, unless you are local and have all the time in the world. i came in the middle of the ending of a marital situation, Lots of stuff and stress. Rob Roy was so helpful in letting me pick the locker location i wanted and type of locker. The video surveilence and the morning and nightly security gaurds that open and close the place add safety to early or late visits. Rob Roy is an excellent storage facility. It is very well managed by staff who are always helpful and friendly. The owner, Tye Tyson, has made huge improvements in the facility since purchasing it some years ago from two pretty flakey owners. Rob Roy has been good to me with both the previous and new owners. I have had a storage locker here three times twice with the prior owner and the prices were good but the staff was a bit cold and not friendly at least to me. The new owners came in and really cleaned the place up lots of brush clearing and added some landscaping and better lighting. The new owner has been very friendly and willing to work with his customers so that they can find a economical ways to store their things and he's not just about making a buck as is true with several storage spaces in Santa Cruz county. They have night watch patrols and 24 hour cameras posted through the facility. So if you're in the south county and looking for a spot to stick your extra stuff I would totally recommend checking with Ty and his crew at Rob Roy storage. read more

Don't go with these guys. They are pretty shady. I emailed them twice that i was moving out of my unit. Twice. I have both the emails to prove it, and i was payed up on my rent for my final month and they sent me to collections with a $525 bill! Not only was it shady to bill me, but the amount is unreasonable. They act friendly but at they end of the day don't trust them. Go with someone else. On a side note... the doors of their units have at least a one inch space under them and when i went to visit my unit i saw several mice scurrying around, including one that ran out from under my units door. Very disappointed snd frustrated with these guys especially after being a customer of theirs for over a year. Not the way you treat people. read more

Needed safe and secure storage in local Aptos. Reading reviews made Rob Roy Storage attractive. However, after visiting the site, we were disappointed. Old wooden buildings, broken fences on the perimeter, cut and missing barbed wire and no unit or hallways security made us look elsewhere. It appears to have at least 2 people living on site which we believe is illegal. The rental prices were out of line and so many empty and available units gave us pause. Something is certainly amiss. Super honest and fair. I came to this place last minute needing emergency storage for 2 weeks. They did not have a big enough space for me so I was just going to rent two or three smaller units. They could have crammed me into the smaller storage units and I would have been happy because I was desperate. Instead, they sent me down the street to Aptos Security Storage just to check for a larger unit. It turned out perfect as they had one large unit left. Saved me money, time, and convenience. At first, I thought Rob Roy was fine even though the doors into each building were not always closed, but the issue for me was when I went to empty my storage room. At the gate I was stopped by the owner who said my truck was too big even though a vehicle of about the same size was seen leaving the facility (and came back later). There were also extra large motor homes in the facility as well. The owner was emotional and unprofessional and would not bow to the driver's calm request to back in and not take any corners. It took us 3 hours to do a 1 hour job. read more

As we were moving our nonprofit science class stuff out we were surprised by a $148 fee. All we could think of was a $13 rate increase from 6 months earlier but there was no explanation. Their list of our payments had none missed except for the invalid 13. The notice of the increase arrived too late to start when they wanted it to as later documented in their own email. We even documented on video they said it wasn't important, but we don't know if the 13 was connected to the 148. Somehow a collections agency sent us a notice for 148 with a veiled threat to our credit record. We started the process of going to court and found it was online and pretty easy. A lawyer friend told us about the (US Govt.) Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (helpful website- thank you, Ian). A CFPB complaint about RobRoy and the collector got the collector to excuse itself. Now were even bigger advocates of video, always using email (ph calls don't count as evidence) and robust home security systems. read more
