Author's note: this will be one of my calmest reviews to date. Also, this review is for last night, not today. A gloomy swath of clouds blanketed the town of Alexandria as my feet crunched on the gravel surrounding our destination. Said destination was Robbie G's: a place with fish and some fried stuff. I felt an dull, throbbing pain in my midsection, and realized that I was both hungry and needed to urinate. A helpful sign beside the entrance pointed toward the left, and I followed a path of scattered brick tiles toward the back of the restaurant where the restrooms were located. The women's bathroom was interestingly decorated. Bright, red walls burned the backs of my eyes as I stepped over the threshold and made my way to the black, plastic throne. Distantly, I noted that the color of the toilet was clever so that I could not tell whether it was clean or not. I also noticed that the toilet paper roll holders were both void of toilet paper, and considered replacing the brown, paper tubes with the supple white rolls in a basket on the floor, but like the other patrons who had sat upon this very throne, I neglected to do so. Sitting down was difficult due to not being provided instruction on what to do when entering the restaurant. We received no greeting nor a single indication that we were supposed to personally select the table at which to spend the next half hour or so of our lives. After about five minutes, we sat down and were finally greeted by a waiter. The waiter was quite amiable and explained the food very well. He explained what a boudin ball was, and the explanation correlated with the end product. He was a good waiter, and my Arizonan ears tingled at his rich Louisiana accent. This was a wonderful way to get to know the culture of one of the three piss pot states (those three states being Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi/Missy Pissy). The food itself was okay, but not $78 okay. It was ridiculously overpriced. I have eaten things that cost $10 but taste much better than what I ordered. The fish could have been seasoned a little better, in my opinion, though the onions and peppers were quite delicious and I demolished each and every one between my teeth immediately. RE-OPENED!! Went there with my parents, my brother (he's a chef) and my kiddo. We all ordered Po-Boys and they were FIRE. Bread was on point, shrimp was excellently seasoned and the fried pickles were yum. Great presentation too. More important, the service was excellent. Made you feel welcome and were very friendly. My 3rd stop in as many nights on the crawfish train, and I was still holding strong for pounds 11 through 14. 3lbs for $15.99, and they threw in an extra couple of potatoes because I said I liked them. Love the extra dry seasoning on the side for dipping. And more beer (the best thing to wash those lil' suckers down with). This place was pretty busy, and most people were eating things other than crawfish... so you know they're good at a variety of items. Casual bar interior. Another set of friendly staff. We were headed to another spot but decided to try Robbie G's. OMG!! First time having crawfish and while I am not great at getting to the good part, it was good. The chicken and sausage gumbo was excellent and the fish was perfect but the most perfect thing was the bread pudding! They should rename it Oh The Bread Pudding. Thanks Margaux! read more

Oh my, I didn't know where to go get a po'boy and a cold beer. Luke h's review inspired me to venture to Robbie G's. First off I drove past the place twice. The sign didn't seem to pop out at me, but there was also a lot of traffic for the ball field right behind it. I pulled in and parking was a breeze in the rustic little gravel lot. The building wasn't anything spectacular but it was a solid cleanish looking joint. Stepping inside I didn't see anything regarding seating so I went up to the counter just to ask. I think the waitress was pleasantly surprised I didn't just plop myself down. She quickly gave me a menu and asked for my drink order. I asked what they had for beers and she didn't know an exact list so I narrowed it to what was from Louisiana. Several abita offerings and a pilsner called Covington. I opted for the Covington. The table had a heaping basket of peanuts and I got cracking and tossed the shells right on the floor! The place was near minus the shells and the metal folding chairs. To eat I ordered the oyster po'boy ( I am incredibly allergic to shrimp, otherwise I would have gotten that.... Not being able to have shrimp or crab has so far been my biggest challenge to eating in the south). They didn't really have sides other than fries so I got a small curly q fry order. Within minutes I was present with a huge sandwich overflowing with fried oysters ( I counted 8 of those huge suckers!) with al of the fixings on the side of the plate. I loaded it up with the tartar sauce like spread, lettuce tomato, red onion and pickle. The only down side was that the pickle was a spear, not chips which would have been easier to keep on the sandwich. Delicious. So good, the oyster were super crisp on the outside and perfectly cooked and still a bit briney on the inside. The fries were hand cut curly fries complete with specks of peel sprinkled throughout them. One thin I don't get about the south? Te styrofoam cups for everything! read more

The food is only the tip of the iceberg for Robbie G's. The staff takes the cake. We were on a road trip across country from New York to Los Angeles. A random yelp search for seafood took us off of the highway and onto Jackson Street. When I say the service was impecable from the moment we walked in the door, I mean it. We were welcomed, our waitress sat at our table with us to explain some of the menu that we were unfamiliar with, then gave amazing recommendations. We had the crab cakes basket, a pound of steamed shrimp, a fried oyster po boy, and fried catfish platter. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!!! If you pick this place, bring your appetite and a smile. I was passing through Alexandria around dinner time and felt the need for a shrimp po boy. I ended up with the seafood platter and boy was I surprised. The catfish was perfect, the shrimp was perfect and the onion rings were some of the best I have had. I prefer thick cut onion rings but these were just right. I will definitely be back. Shrimp and oyster Po'boy. If you ask for it, they'll make it. Fried. Them seafoods were fresh. Flavor said fresh. Bite said fresh. They were covered in medium to light breading. A bit salty. Nothing famous or distinctive. I'll let them seafoods do the talking. Shake on a couple splashes of Tabasco. Now them little critters are singing. Harmonizing. The loaf is warm and soft. Crust is firm. The inside had a light toasty crunch. The parts to dress the sandwich are on the side. Tartar sauce was not any kind of usual. Sweet. Yes. The flavor made me think of perfume. Onion rings are red onion. Extra sweet and mild. Same crust. The rings never turned soggy. Generous portion. Maybe enough for two. Maybe. If the Po'boy was REALLY overstuffed, the maximum bang would have been achieved. That's inching to five. Pan francais with a crispy crust would be an automatic 5. I know a place on the River Road in Kenner that'll serve you a 5. Regardless. Robbie G has the answer for you right here and right now. read more

This place used to be good, but the new owner has ruined this place. Everything on the menu is double what the price should be. Ordered a fish plate, $20. Fish was cold. Son ordered a hamburger. They came back after 15 minutes and said that they didn't have any ground meat thawed. I hope they got a picture because they won't catch me there again read more

I don't know if I went at the wrong time or what, but I ordered a dozen of blue crab and they were severely over boiled. Crab is my all time favorite food, but I wouldnt get them from here ever again. My wife ordered catfish and fries. The fries seemed as if they were cooked hours prior, extremely under seasoned and the fish was mediocre. I will not order food from here again. read more

Robbie G's is an Alexandria, LA Institution! Ya walk in...peanuts cover the floor...sink on the wall to wash your hands, after you pick & claw your way through the mounds of the crawfish ya just chowed down on! Robbie G.s is very casual. You'll see white shirts, shorts & t-shirts, many locals, as well as tourists here. Lilly was the BEST waitress! She was fun, friendly & had some great menu suggestions. Hubby ordered the Grilled Shrimp PoBoy....WOWZZA! I ordered the friend shrimp basket...the shrimp are HUGE & delicious! Daughter ordered the fried Catfish....Yummmola! Son ordered the Shrimp PoBoy...delicious, as well! Daughter-In-law ordered the Grilled Shrimp....FYI...Very Very Spicy! We were so glad we picked Robbie G's...thanks to Luke H.! This little Hole In The Wall made a great impression on us. The food is great, the place is interesting & the wait staff (especially Lilly) is lots of fun! Best Grilled Shrimp PoBoy in Louisiana/USA/World/Universe. If Robbie G's was in New Orleans, it would have been on every major Food Network show by now. It is dirty...yet clean. Casual...yet can provide an exceptional date night experience. Hole in the Wall...yet institution. Great regular menu with items like duck, soft shell crab, grilled (charbroiled) shrimp, and fried pickles and Robbie G's also has all of the seasonal indulgences, ex. boiled crawfish. Like the peanuts on the floor, the gravel parking lot, the reclaiming an old building, but I heart the drinks in Styrofoam cups. read more

From the peanuts scattered on the floor, to the small dining room that makes you feel "uncomfortably close" to the party next your table, ugly panel wood walls...this place makes you feel like you're eating at an OLD SHACK and you will pay TOO MUCH to eat here (the average combo is $22.00. Their menu specialty is crawfish (which is basically the ONLY reason people eat here), but there is also other seafood combos like fried shrimp and fries...but ALL combos are expensive and NOT worth the fact that you're eating in a small, dirty and UGLY SHACK!!!! read more

If you're on the hunt for a typical Louisiana restaurant without any of the fuss, this is your place. Boiled crawfish is the cornerstone of Robbie G's. However, the catfish, fried tomatoes and poboys shouldn't go unnoticed. I am originally from the area but haven't lived here in maybe 8 years. I came back to visit my family and requested we stop here. Nothing like 3 lbs of crawfish to remind you that you'll never have food like this in Chicago. The prices are decent and the service is solid. There is even a convenient sink located in the restaurant that is just a sink to take off the crawfish smell and that soap does a fantastic job. This places is family oriented with the picnic table setting and the laid back atmosphere. This place is a hidden gem and always a good pick. read more

This place came highly recommended by a colleague and we had high hopes when we arrived as our first meal in Louisiana... but was somewhat disappointed. The soft shell crab on my poboy was a lil salty with not a whole lot more in it besides the shoft shell crab. The burger we ordered good and satiated the hunger but was not anything we likely would crave again. I was not going to rag on this place and let it have a good life because I'm a local. So I want everyone to succeed here. Please do not associate this restaurant with who it is named after, many years ago. This restaurant does not do this man justice. I love Robbie G. But as far as the restaurant goes, it's on the opposite side of the spectrum. I haven't been to Robbie G's in about 10 years. But I hope it's longer since I go back, which will be never. One of us got the JR Poboy because it was a mystery. But the mystery is out... it's terrible. Don't get it. It had very little meat on it. One of us got the Philly Poboy. The owner and cook need to go to Philly to lean how to cut the fat off and make a good sandwich. Or they need to order one from the Y-Not Stop down the road or Philly's Pizza to know how to rise to their competition. Even their staple, the seafood, was too fishy. This place was pretty cool! I liked the atmosphere of it a lot. We started with some crawfish etouffe which was really good but unfortunately was 80% rice. If it had more sauce and crawfish it would of been great! For our main course my fiance and I shared fried catfish, shrimp, and boiled crawfish. The cat fish was some of the best I've ever had. The breading was literally perfect! So good. The crawfish were also very good! The only reason I deducted a star was because our server had zero personality and didn't seem to care about much. Came down from Wisconsin to visit a friend. She suggested Robbie G's. I tried crawfish for the first time. Wow, it was delicious and so was the sauce it came with! Before leaving we took a walk around the back to see where they boil the crawfish. The cook happened to be on his way out, but he got out of his truck and came and talked with us. He showed us the process of he boils a basket full of crawfish. It was very neat and he was so friendly. If I'm ever back in LA, I will definitely be stopping back by and will be referring my family and friends there. read more

Extremely inflated prices since our last visit. $12.99 for a poboy that had just enough roast beef to cover the bread. That price also doesn't include a side. A child's chicken tender (3 tenders and fries) was $7.99. The poboy tasted just fine, but you have to make sure not to put too many of the toppings on it for the sake of drowning out the taste of the meat. Looked back on our receipt and also realized we had been overcharged by a few dollars. Probably wouldn't go back since this isn't the first bad experience I've had (previously experienced reheated frozen crawfish). read more

It was clearly never cleaned, very cold, and half of them were just heads. Our waitress was extremely unfriendly and refilled our drinks once after I got up and took her our cups. Came for dinner with the family on a Wednesday night. Has a nice dive bar type atmosphere which I enjoy. My fiance and I had the fried combo with catfish and shrimp and added 3 lbs of boiled crawfish. Both the catfish and shrimp were some of the best I've ever had!
