Robert Fresh Market is hands down one of my favorite spots to grab lunch. Yes, lunch. At a grocery store. Don't judge it until you try it. Their hot bar is $9.99 a pound and it is worth every penny. I'm talking fried catfish, crawfish étouffée, a full wing bar, crawfish cornbread, and so many other options it's hard to choose. Whoever is back there cooking is not playing around. The fried catfish tastes like somebody's mama made it on a Sunday afternoon, and the crawfish étouffée is rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. They even have little packs of Louisiana hot sauce ready in case you want to top off that fish the right way. And let's not forget, it's still a grocery store. So you can grab a cold drink, check out the boiled seafood, or hit the salad bar if you're trying to balance things out. The options are endless. The employees are always friendly and helpful. I frequent the hot bars for breakfast and lunch hours. The food bars are always full. The food is delicious and there's always customers waiting to get their turn. LOL. I don't visit Robert Market often but I found myself there today, 12/15. They were sampling wine and some fine spirits. They had the Grinch and the Coca Cola Christmas bears. The store is very nice, but the aisles are always full of merchandise carts and suppliers. The people are lovely. I love the sushi and the salads, but the soups are really thin and not very flavorful. For example, the split pea soup and I am a lover of "real" pea soup, but this split pea soup is limp, very thin and not full of any type of flavor. It seems like it is full of collard leaves and other debris. Please, if you are going to serve split pea soup, do it right! Full of real peas, cream, carrots, onions, ham and potatoes. It should be thick and crazy full of flavor from a simmering ham bone broth to the finished goodness. If you cannot afford to do it right, then Do Not Bother. Robert's is my go to neighborhood grocery store! What I like most about shopping here is the selection of fresh meat, seafood, produce, local food offerings, florals, and the store employees. I know practically all of the cashiers by name! The day time manager, David is by far the nicest most dutiful employee. He's all around the store making sure it's running smoothly. Short lines, organized, fully stocked shelves with friendly faces, what more could you ask for from your local grocer?! This location is and always has been a staple for the Uptown New Orleans and surrounding locations for quite some time. Plenty of parking spaces on parking lot, a light tight but nonetheless usually plenty of parking. Always a clean store that has a very warm & welcoming home feel to it upon entrance. There is a PJ's Coffee at the entrance for those of that would love a boost or just some type of refreshing beverage during your adventure throughout the store. I must say on this particular visit they opened the hot food bar/buffet that was loaded up with tons of that Southern home-cooked delicious goodness ranging from fried catfish, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, mac&cheese, etc.. Due the Covid stipulations Chef Allison and a few part of the kitchen staff worked the line and made your plates filling it up with whatever you requested. This is perfect especially for those individuals who have been effective by the recent hurricane that just past through and need a good hot meal. Wonderful $5 Rotisserie chickens at the deli! The chicken is very juicy and tasty. The back has boiled shrimp. The deli also offers $5 creole and cajun jambalaya. There are $10 frittatas. There were no nectarines or peaches in stock even though it is summer. There is no self-service checkout. This isn't Walmart. What you can get at Walmart is marked up higher. So don't buy those stuff. Stick with the rotisserie chicken. read more

This place should be SHUT DOWN. I have contacted the health department and begged them to do an inspection. I went today and most of the prepared food had MOLD growing all of over it. The last two times I got packaged entrées they were not good. Shrimp creole was like they got a can of Campbell's tomato soup and tossed in a few shrimp and poured it over a big serving of rice. It was truly inedible. I was really hungry so I decided to try again tonight and got crawfish etouffee. It was 90%rice and I counted 12 crawfish. It did taste good but there wasn't enough sauce for most of the rice. Adding to my dissatisfaction was the price of almost $9 for each. I used to get meals there all the time but it's just too expensive to be satisfied with food that's mediocre at best. Be prepared to pay double for almost everything in this store. Last week they charged me 2 dollars for one yellow onion! Quality. Their produce is often rotten or days away from being rotten. Whenever I visit N.O., this is usually where I stop for groceries because it's near her house. I usually get small items but I noticed they had crawfish. I was not expecting them to be as flavorful as my normal spot, but they were. The icing on the cake was that they were cheaper($3.50 a pound), so I was definatly pleased. I live near Robert's so I did a little math to figure out if I need to start paying for home deliveries. I compared a random sample of popular brands and staples from Rouses, Walmart, and Robert's. Unlike other reviewers, I found the in-store prices matched Robert's website and weekly ads. Buying from Walmart would probably save me about 10-35% on average compared to Roberts. In my case, the costs of driving to Walmart or delivery are about $6 or $8 respectively. So for weekly grocery orders over $80, I would greatly benefit from driving to or delivery from Walmart. For weekly orders over $20 there is a good chance I would save some money. If I only plan to buy $20 of groceries in a week, I am better off buying from Robert Fresh Market. This does not include Robert's weekly deals. Deals can reduce prices for a few items by about $0.30 to $1 per unit cheaper than the same item at Rouses. For items on sale, it is always better for me to buy from Robert's. Their pricing seems (to me) meant to give the impression they're a high end store and maybe discourage lower income customers. With home deliveries getting cheaper and easier, this old school Whole Foods strategy might not last. read more

So wanted to grab a quick lunch and I was staying around the corner so I figured I might as well check it out. This place really lives up too their motto we put accent on service! They have a wide selection of cooked foods and salad bar. And on the Saturday I went they even had a build your own seafood boil. I got the oyster Rockefeller soup which was delicious. I also got. I don't get why everyone was so enthused about this place, months before it opened. I suppose it's a New Orleans institution and a nice switch up from Rouses, Winn Dixie, and Walmart (note: I miss New Orleans, but not its dearth of decent grocery stores). But it's just so "meh" to me. I guess Robert is of awesome convenience factor where it's located, because Rouses may be a little too far into Mid City if you're around the Claiborne, Carollton area. So it's an especially nice spot for students not wishing to trick to Mid City or Magazine St. It's a much vaster selection than Walgreens and Rite Aid - there's actual substantial food available for purchase. But it just isn't all that, I'm sorry to say. Everything here is a few cents (or far more) expensive than Rouses. And yes, considering it's a rather small space, there's not very much in terms of selection. There is a lovely salad bar that's reasonably priced, but it gravely pales in comparison to the Whole Foods salad. This place is not especially vegan friendly - as with most non-Whole Foods groceries in New Orleans. I can't say I ever mean to stop by here unless it's extremely convenient. I rather driver the extra mile or two to Rouses. I will admit this place has an okay beer and wine selection for those of you in need. I'm not lowering my rating because a handful of times I find something about this store that redeems it, like when they carried peonies that one time or when they stocked that unique product like Cookie Two Step or prepackaged spaghetti veggies or that time the cashier was actually quite speedy and kind, and as Harry T. mentions, I attempt to win millions upon millions of dollars, and they're the closest seller of Powerball tickets. So why the update? I want to reiterate why I still think this is a two-star operation. I was scooping up a few grocery items before heading home, and I should've chosen a different lane (of which miraculously nearly all were open at the time) than the PJ's counter where this particular cashier's frustration with the receipt paper should've been a tell-tale sign. I put my handful of items on the counter, and then noticed that the Romaine Hearts looked a little funky (not funky fresh) in their packaging, like maybe they shouldn't be on the shelves funky (totally based on personal observation). The veggie section is right around the corner, and I asked if he didn't mind me just running to grab a new one. Instead of taking what looked to be a not-so-great produce behind the counter (since it probably shouldn't be on the shelves) he insisted on scanning it (since it was assumed I'd grab the same product and this would, in theory, make it an expedient process) and then to my confusion told me to put it back on the shelf? Que? Whatever... So I got to return the not-so-great produce to the shelf and realize the three other packages from the same brand and product all look funky so I grab the romaine hearts next to them which was a different brand. I quickly returned, and everything had been rung up. Great. I present to him the new package of romaine and he growls at me! No joke, I've never been growled at by a human being before. Um, what? He says, "you grabbed the wrong brand" in a huff. "Well the other brand's produce all looked the same, so I grabbed this one". He then says, "well now we have to wait". You have to void something with manager's approval. I get it. Like you've never voided something before, and it's not like we're in Costco, bro. The manager comes over and the cashier gruffly explains the situation and is still very hostile towards me, which I then reiterate, "the produce did not look fresh, so I got a different one". At this point, the dude that was patiently waiting behind me has gone to a different line. Good call, buddy. The manager clicks some keys after finally understanding the situation, and everything is right in the world. In his defense, the cashier mechanically said, "sorry for the confusion" and rung me up, but I haven't been talked to that way by anyone in a really long time and definitely not by someone who is in the customer service industry in forever. I mean, what if you had ordered a coffee and told him it wasn't sweet enough?! Maybe take Charles off of customer-facing duties 'til he learns that growling at people and putting potentially unfresh produce back on the shelves is not the way to win on the customer service front. read more

Robert Fresh Market is absolutely not the least expensive in the city. It's not large and it doesn't have a huge variety of options. What it does have is incredible to-go food, essentials, and convenience. It's near my house and has all the ingredients I'd ever need for my day to day meals. I'd honestly rather shop here than get stuck in a 5-person line at Rouses. Their beer and wine selection is TOP NOTCH and their flowers are gorgeous. My favorite go to grocery store. I guess mainly because its literally one street over. They are a little pricey than most groceries so its a good place yo grab a few items on the go. This is one of the weirdest grocery stores I've ever been to. I, too, am a Carrollton resident who has to occasionally acquiesce a trip to Robert's because we run out of cat food or can't make it the three miles in either direction to go to Rouses. Here you will find everything and nothing in the same trip. They will have self-rising flour, but no all-purpose. Jif but not Skippy. Some things will actually be a good value, while some products will be 50% higher than the same product at Rouses. The wine and cheese selection is actually fairly decent for such a small store and I have gotten excellent produce and hot boiled crawfish here. We've also had some oddly uncomfortable experiences with the people at checkout. The current 8th circle of construction hell at Claiborne and Carrollton makes the process of getting in and out of the lot an exercise in wracked nerves and yelling Jesus Take The Wheel. The only reason I ever go there is for one or two items I need right then because this place is super close to my house. The prices are those of Whole Foods (I feel like I should rate the price range as "Ultra High-end" but I guess that's a little dramatic.), but the quality is that of Breaux Mart (or maybe even as bad as that corner store down the street..). Everything is SO overpriced. They have, like, nothing. And I don't have ridiculous demands. I just want Scooby Doo shaped blue box mac and cheese, for crying out loud. The few advantages? It was ridiculously low on vegetables - two tiny slices of tomato, and a sad little piece of lettuce, that's it. Very bad for the price. The ice cream cooler was empty - very disappointing.
