I worked with Rob for my S Corp from 2019 to 2023 and I believe I can give an honest review of his services based on my personal experience. With the rise of AI in various fields, such as professional services by CPAs and legal advice, it may soon become a question of cost for small businesses and entrepreneurs when choosing between a bot for CPA services and a human with a personality (i.e., your CPA). When dealing with a numbers-oriented person, you may encounter a lackluster personality that can be unprofessional or prickly when responding to clients, and unfortunately, that was my experience with Rob. While appreciation should be mutual, I never felt like I was valued as a client by Rob. I often felt like I was imposing on his time when I did reach out to him (maybe 2-3 times a year...) Rob is a CPA with the ability to do taxes; he'd have to be pretty incompetent to ruin this and still stay in business. However, this isn't why he gets a rating of 2 stars - Read on: Based on my experience, Rob's responses are often quick but curt or unprofessional in tone. The short version is that he typically made me feel as a client that he was doing me a favor, a favor I WAS PAYING FOR. I often felt like I was bothering him. It seemed like there was never a good time to reach out for his assistance. I'm a pretty low-maintenance client. I didn't expect the sun, moon, or stars, but that's the impression he seemed to give. I just imagined his eye roll with the under-your-breath annoyance in the way he'd respond... Entrepreneurs and small businesses in California may get the short end of the stick as bigger clients with deeper pockets are prioritized. Maybe it's the inherent truth, but it can always be done tactfully. I asked him a question via email, to which he promptly replied stating his consultation fee was $100/15 minutes. He also inquired whether I wished to proceed with a call and informed me that he would bill me in advance. We later clarified that it was just a simple question about something that I was informing him about my business updates, that did not require a "phone consultation." I never had a problem paying for something when the value of the services lined up. If Rob wants his clients to pay based on the value of his services, maybe he should also make the value he provides more transparent. Unfortunately, he is not an isolated case in this matter. Most CPAs have similar expectations from their clients. I believe that Rob can certainly improve his professional delivery and engagement even when it's brief. The cost of something and its value are not the same. People often mistake the two. Even as a consultant, when I'm upselling to a client, it's crucial not to make them feel like they're just another dollar sign. I also don't give the impression that I can't wait to nickel and dime my clients either. Admittedly, the last time I reached out to Rob, it was during the holiday time, but as most small businesses or entrepreneurs know, we tend to work unconventional hours. I try to fit in emails and send out correspondence when I find the time. It was downright awkward the way Rob responded in the scolding tone that he did. This in no way means as the sender I intend for the other person to drop everything and respond to me like it's a fire drill, especially during their holiday either. Emails can wait till the next business day. This is part of living in the modern world. PER ROB: "...Also, please note this is a holiday weekend and I'd appreciate you respectably not sending this until a normal working day." During holidays or vacations, I don't know why Rob couldn't do like other professionals and have an OOO "Out of Office" message stating he's unavailable and will respond to emails later. This is a typical professional solution that Rob could easily implement, without any unnecessary prickliness in tone or scolding his client in his responses. Generally speaking, if a client's email or text is not urgent (or something I may have done wrong), I will respond on the next business day. It can wait! If Rob wanted to end our business relationship or be dropped, he succeeded. Sometimes, one must weigh the pros and cons. For me, it was mostly cons rather than pros. The taxes Rob did for my S Corp could probably be done using business tax software; there wasn't anything special about them. Otherwise, I prefer working with a CPA who values me as a client and doesn't make me feel like our communication is an annoyance. If you are looking for a CPA who treats their clients in the described manner, then feel free to select Rob. However, it is important to note that there are many reliable, competent, and welcoming CPAs in California, and it ultimately boils down to finding the right match. It's a little nerve racking hiring someone off Yelp for something as important as taxes, but Rob has been A+. This year was my 2nd year working with him and I don't really have one negative thing to say about him. His prices are fair, he is responsive, and gets things done quickly. I never write reviews on Yelp. In fact, this could be my very first. Very disappointed in this tax preparer. I emailed them yesterday to inquire about their rates to help my husband and I file our taxes, and I received a short/weird response back that my email looked like spam and I needed to find another tax preparer. I told them I was a legitimate individual and made my case but they only emailed me back to say they still recommend another tax preparer because they don't believe I am real person. They could have at least picked up the phone to call me and talk to me to verify my identity. I even left a voicemail yesterday with no reply. Never had such a weird interaction with someone I was trying to hire. They don't seem very professional or good at customer service. Do not recommend. read more

I see all the 5 stars but it wasn't for me, Normally I'd prefer and in person meeting or in the times of Covid possibly a zoom. I personally like to see the person I'm giving such sensitive information too, I inquired about this but he didn't even answer the question so I took that as a no and just let him do my business and personal taxes because I was behind. With all the emailing back n fourth my business and personal taxes were not correct, my social security number was incorrect 3 times and I kept correcting it each time, he also referred to the IRS that this was the last tax return forever for my business, because I bought my partners out, when I inquired as to why he did this he has yet to respond. A connection with your cpa for a small business is crucial, he doesn't follow up or help assist further than what exactly you compensate for. I ended up overpaying in taxes on funds that should have been equity in to my business as my new cpa has enlightened me on, not me paying taxes on the equity as Rob had me do. I hate leaving bad reviews especially to my fellow socal business owners as I want us all to thrive, when we thrive the city thrives; but I think he needs the constructive criticism to possibly adjust his client interactions. read more

THE SHORT VERSION: Robert Ricco is outstanding at his job. Professional, responsive, and exceedingly competent. I highly recommend him for both Personal and Corporate filings. THE UNABRIDGED VERSION: I had been anguishing about finding a new CPA for about a year. My accountant of over 15 years had recently been "slipping". There were more filing errors and...even worse...poor/no responses to my communications. I knew that I had to find someone new, someone competent, someone responsive, and find that someone QUICKLY (corporate filings were due in just over a month!) I found Robert Ricco, CPA on Yelp. I read his reviews, and more importantly I read HIS responses to reviews (which are the best indicator of his good character). I was impressed by both. So I wrote to him. I explained my situation, my stress about changing CPAs, my tendency to get worked up about finances especially regarding my S-Corp, my need for timely communication to queries, etc., etc., etc. His response was immediate and understanding. We emailed back and forth a bit, both to inform him of the specifics of my financial situation and to allow me to further feel comfortable with this much needed transition. ***I just checked my email history and am somewhat embarrassed by how many "follow up" questions I sent him. (Sorry, Rob!)*** He assured me that enlisting a new CPA was not as daunting as I feared. Rob's respectful, knowledgable and "no-pressure" responses had me convinced. This was to be my new CPA! Bringing him up to speed was easier than I thought it would be. I gave him the last couple years of tax filings (he only needed last year's), so he could set up a profile for both my S-Corp and my personal taxes. Then, all my 2019 documents were uploaded to this fantastic online portal. Never even had to go to an office (though I did just to shake hands). I can't promise the all-digital experience will be yours, but he certainly is set up for it. He is thorough! I received a couple clarification emails to make sure that he was 100% clear on my deductions. And then, just like that, my 2019 filing was done! SIDE NOTE: I got a MUCH larger refund than I was anticipating. So there you have it. All my woes about finding a new CPA are in the past. And, unlike my previous CPA, Rob is younger than I am, so I don't see any reason why I'll ever need to switch again! Ever. read more

We had a sticky situation with the IRS because of some pretty extreme negligence on the previous CPA's part. He explained the real problem to me, reassured me on the next steps, and actually turned around an amended return in less than 3-4 business days. This happened not during tax season FYI. He also responded to my emails and lots of questions (I was a lot more "hands on" after my last experience) in a timely manner, never being rude or over-charging me because I was in a tough spot. I very rarely contribute to Yelp or write reviews -- but I found Rob on it and he is amazing -- simply put. So here goes: I had to file a previous years tax return and was anxious about it to say the least. I called him just days before tax day and he took the time to talk me through the process and assured me it would be easy to take care of. Within 24hrs I had my returns! We did it all over email and text (I even texted him some of the docs). I was so amazed how thorough and detailed he was, that I had him do my 2019 returns as well... And I had already purchased TurboTax and was 95% through the process -- but it was clear looking through the 2018 returns he had just prepared for me that there were things he accounted for that were just simply out of my domain (and I had spent hours on it).
