The wine was some of the best we've ever had, if Jesus made Cabernet it must have tasted just like Scion. The views and grounds here are stunning! But that was about it. I admit that our group was about 15 minutes late to our reserved time, but I called the winery to let them know we were unfortunately caught in traffic. Once we arrived at our table, the service was rushed and subpar, and we were told that we needed to vacate our table for the next party. I have never been rushed out of a tasting like this and I have been wine tasting often for about 7 years now all over California! My friends and I (all women of color) also noticed that other parties that were there before us weren't rushed to leave, and they all happened to be white. So perhaps it was discriminatory, perhaps not. Also, the wine was okay but nothing extraordinary. I will not be returning given the area's multitude of great wineries with better service. read more

If you like the kind of red wines that suck the moisture out of your mouth this is the place for you. The Cab Franc and Petite Verdot are awesome but a kick in the mouth. All the wines here are good. The hostess took me to the wine cave that stays at a constant cool temperature for storing the wine. I left with the Cab Franc and Petite Verdot. This is a must see read more

We come every year for the Sonoma Wine Road event. This time around we decided to focus on the Alexander Valley because we had a few favorite wineries that were participating. Robert Young Estate is one of our favorites in that area. Our experience here has always been great. This time around we finally were able to enter their caves. So, nice! Now, to their wines.......Chardonnay! They are so consistent with their chard's and now I tell all my girlfriends this is the place. We have deemed their chardonnay Cougar Crack!!! I have given these chard's as presents for birthdays, Christmas etc. to my girlfriends and I always receive a thank you card. RY just does a great presentation, everyone we have encountered has been so nice and informative. All our times here have been very pleasurable. Grab a chardonnay and enjoy it on their patio. Oh! Nice out-of-the-way winery that has a small but very nicely designed tasting room and a beautiful setting. Hidden find -- head up around the back of the barn up the hill to an awesome picnic spot overalooking the valley. Robert Young sells more than half its yield of Chardonnay -- its a great spot for that wine. We did a vertical tasting going back to 2005 and were blown away at how good the aged Chardonnay was. Delicious. We are conditioned to think that aged white wine is crap. Not so here. Love the family producer vibe here, the complete opposite of the gargantuan tasting room you often find in Napa on the valley floor. read more

Robert Young Winery is a model for what other wineries should do: Limit their production and specialize in a few wines. They sell 95% of their grapes and keep the remaining 5% for themselves. There is something like 75 single vineyard labels of Robert Young designate. I have been here a couple of times and the staff is always pleasant. Their 07 Area 27 Chardonnay, 02 Merlot, and 05 Scion Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Young even has his own Chardonnay clone #17 which is growing in my backyard! read more

Made a trip up to Sonoma last weekend with my parents and boyfriend. Robert Young was my favorite stop. The estate is gorgeous and the tasting room quaint. Jeff was pouring the tasting and he was super friendly and really knowledgeable. We got to taste a vertical of Chardonnays and a vertical of their Scion blend, as well as a Merlot and Red Winery Road Cab Franc. I love tasting verticals because I think that is when you start to really learn about win. The differences in taste of the same type of wine help you understand how weather, soil, grapes, etc really impact the complexity of the taste. The only warning is that the tasting room is tiny - we were there with another couple but anyone else wouldn't have gotten a spot at the bar. I would recommend stopping here first (which we did) so you beat any crowds that may come in during the day. They also have a good wine club - which I just joined! They have good deals with members getting 20% off all their wine. And the 2005 Chardonnay was only $12 a bottle for members at the vineyard! That is officially the best deal I have ever seen for wine and it tainted the rest of our trip because nothing was as exciting as find that :) We bought 19 bottles of it between all of us!! read more

My favorite wineries tend to be small and low key...like Robert Young Estate Winery. We moseyed up to the small tasting bar (eight probably fit comfortably) where we decided to share a glass. Really enjoyed the cabs and the merlots...there were a few library selections open that day that we had an opportunity to taste. Always a bonus! One of the more pricey places in regards to bottle prices, but the product backs up the price, hands down. Tasting fee is refunded with a bottle purchase...the rule that I love (and which means that I brought home way more bottles than I meant to this trip). Our pourer was very friendly and didn't mind me poking around back. Loved the history of the farm & getting to hear a lot about the history of the general farming community. Definitely a place on my list to revisit next time we are in the area! read more

This is a neat family owned winery that has a lot of great wine. The history of the prune farm turned vineyard and then winery is interesting. Ask one of Robert Young's children or grandchildren and they'll tell you all about it! In a scenic little corner of Alexander Valley, Robert Young was an early grower in the area and his vineyards today supply the likes of big names such as Clos Du Bois and Simi. The winery and the tasting room are small and the tour covering the winery and caves was pretty basic. Our guide Norm, was helpful though in explaining the wines and Mr. Young's history in the valley. Sadly, Mr. Young had passed away the week before we visited. As for the wines, Robery Young is known for Chardonnay which is done in the big and oaky style; and for the Scion which is a Cabernet Sauvignon based bordeaux blend. We tasted through those as well as a merlot, and red winery road (a cab franc blend). The Chardonnay and Scion were definately the standouts. The main reason that I'm rating this five stars is that for a $5 tasting fee (refunded with purchase) we got to taste an 03,04,05 vertical of Scion (we chose 04). That was excellent, thanks Norm. I'd happily recommend Robert Young on any trip to Alexander Valley. read more

Couldn't agree more with the above review. Tiny tasting area (smaller than my kitchen counter) had three VERY knowledgeable people who loved to educate us on their wines. A large group of us dropped by and they were as friendly as could be. When we expressed an interest in their warehouse, one of them took us back and gave us a tour. We ended up staying at their grounds, at their invitation, and had a picnic in their shaded area near their wine caves. Nicest people, incredible wines. Great out of the way spot. Worth the short trip off the beaten path. This place is what wine tasting is all about! read more

Update 2007: The 2001/2002 Scion are both fantastic. Rich Cab blends that will sit down or with some decanting could drink well today. Bilal and I tasted three wines in early January and I was very impressed with their 2002 chardonnay(very complex) and the 2000 Scion. I also heard it through the grapevine that the '99 Scion in very tasty. Intimate service, very low-key and unpretentious. read more

I always like a story that goes like this.... At one point the winery was just vineyards and sold their fruit to all these high-end wineries in Sonoma and Napa, then they realized that maybe they could make killer wines with the fruit they had been selling off for all these years. Such is the story with Robert Young. A Chardonnay pioneer and excellent fruit producer finally decided to make their own product. The wines here are outstanding top to bottom. Our host was super friendly and accommodating. There were some tasters in front of us so we had to wait about 10 minutes for the tasting but once we were at the bar we had the server's full attention. Probably some of the best grapes in the world. Go here if you think good grapes will result in good wines. read more

Did a wine tasting here during a long weekend trip to Healdsburg. Robert Young is one of the older family owned estate vineyards in the valley with a great story. Unfortunately I don't remember that much of it since it was our 3rd or 4th winery that day. :) They had some great wines. We ended up picking up a really great chardonnay. read more

We stopped in here after hitting several of the wineries along 128. Very small tasting room, so large groups will feel cramped, but the wine offerings are outstanding. We wound up splitting a taste but Jeff the host was very generous and indicated that if we wanted to re-visit or try something different it was no problem. I had high hopes for this winery -- decent reviews, beautiful setting and dog friendly -- but the visit left a very bitter taste in my mouth. First of all, they're not really winemakers but provide grapes for them , producing a very small number of barrels for their own label. Not, by itself, a bad thing, but the wine is plonk. Drinkable but totally undistinguished and terribly overpriced. I could live with that and the $40 tasting fee, figuring my wife and I would buy a couple of bottles and focus on the ambience, which is nice. Four selections poured for $40, all tiny, which given the pedestrian wine may have been fortunate. Then informed that our tasting fee would be waived only if we each bought two bottles, something that I've never experienced. Not going to happen for poor wine. Told our server Scott that we were very unhappy and his response was basically to suck it up. Combative and dismissive of unhappy guests. Go down the road to deLorimier and you'll find a vastly better experience. Exceptional wine, hospitality and your tating fee waived with the purchase of a single bottle of excellent wine. read more

Went to pick up my club shipments at the winery tasting room. I had to make a pickup appointment. The process was effortless and touch-less. Robert Young Junior was there. another stop on barrel tasting weekend. 90something year old robert young actually lives in the house. his children were there helping run things. we met one of his sons, 2 daughters, and grandchildren. keeping it all in the family. the room where we tasted was where some barrels were stored. i noticed they also had a cave but we didnt get visit. the room we were in was shaped like a barn and made of wood, pretty. they served brownie/truffle bites and cheese. we sampled the chardonnay and some other reds. pretty good. read more

I was really unimpressed by the quality of the wines. Most were generic and some were just plain bad. I don't know why people rate this place highly. The tasting room experience was uncomfortable. Very small tasting room, pleasant and informative staff who were happy to provide references to other vineyards in the area based on our likes/dislikes. This was a great little detour. We were greeted as we walked up to the tasting room by Norm, he was all smiles and made the experience (Bruce was super friendly too). Its a small label and small tasting room but great wines. Norm also gave us a tour of their neat caves that can be rented for a party of up to 32 people for a seated dinner. I visited Robert Young for the first time at this year's Wine Road Barrel Tasting. And what a tasty treat it was. The wines are impeccable. I tasted the: 2008 & 2009 Alexander Valley Chardonnay 2007 & 2008 Alexander Valley Merlot 2007 & 2008 Scion Cabernet Sauvignon I was really drawn to the reds. And there was this wonderful difference between the 2007 and 2008 vintages-2008s and 2009s having this distinctive richness. The Merlots blew me away and made me realize that for some fool reason I had put Merlot into a ho-hum wine category. Not these Merlots. The 2008 Alexander Valley Merlot had this amazing rich, chocolately-leather taste to die for. And then of course, there is THE Scion Cabernet Sauvignon. Probably one of their best known vintages and for good reason! A Cabernet so rich and delicious with all of the things you crave in a big red. The flavour completely captures your full attention and transports you to wine heaven. The only draw back to these wines is that they're a little pricey and the wine club discount still doesn't bring the price down enough to be really accessible for me. But gosh they are soooo good. We splurged and took the 2008 Scion Cabernet home for dinner that night. But it doesn't end there. The atmosphere of the winery is extremely cozy and friendly. You even get a glimpse into what it was like way back when Robert Young first dumped growing prunes for grapes. The wine cave is a nice experience if you can manage it. Lastly, the folks working the tasting room Tina Cloutier and Pat Warren brought a whole another dimension to the experience with the friendliness and hospitality. Tina in particular was very knowledgeable of the wines and the wine making business and shared a lot insights into what makes Robert Young so special. read more

Stopped her for Winter Wineland Fest, and glad we did. The family has been growing grapes on their property for 4 generations, and as they say, the really know this place, acre by acre, row by row. They sell grapes to some well known wineries, and keep the best for themselves. As I told other wineseekers, "this one is worth the calories". We got to taste the Chardonnay and the Scion, and some Scion in the barrel. Had to join the wine club to get more (ok, I'm bitter about that - can't I just pay for the taste?)
