Dingy restaurant with no atmosphere and a musty smell. The serving staff were all miserable with miserable looks on their faces. They keep the cart where they clear the plates in the main room of the restaurant and I spent my evening looking at filthy dishes while I ate. I asked the server - one of the 4 servers that came to our table - if he had a suggestion between the Pasta Roberto and the bolognese special and the answer I got was "one is cream sauce and one is red sauce" gee thanks. Finished my drink and no one asked if I wanted another. Bread was good but when we finished none of the 4 servers asked if we wanted more bread. Food was average at best. Both pasta sauces were drowning in peas which took away the flavor. Don't go here. There are a lot better options in the area. read more

The food is excellent. The fish outstanding. I have tried 3 of the pasta dishes, ravioli, ragu and tortellini. I need to branch out and try something different but the courses I have tried are so good, I keep going back to them. The salads tasty, the casear and rugola salads, almost a meal. Service - they are attentive, and do not rush you out. You may feel ignored, but you should realize, they are just letting you chill and enjoy. Ambiance - this is a classy restaurant. Dark lighting, with white table clothes, classy - I enjoy it. The wait staff are very professional and the closest to a "professional" wait staff I have seen in years, maybe decades. Guess what, you are not sitting on top of the other guests. There is room to get up, you not part of the other tables conversation - again, something I have not seen in years. Rarely do I write reviews a minute after exiting an establishment, but this place deserves it. Horrible service isn't even the word. Waiters are very inattentive, in a rush and I guess if you're not a known customer or possibly an African American, they just don't care. My experience here on a Saturday night was so bad that in just the first ten minutes of arriving, I was ready to leave. Despite my readiness to exit, I stayed and that was ONLY due to the guest in which I came with. As a lover of food and of course a lover of Italian food, but I would NOT suggest this restaurant to anyone that wants good service and an enjoyable time. Food was easily a 5/10. This place is terrible. We made an error once with a takeout order and they threw us out as customers. The Boss said they won't make us food anymore. Over a pork chop. I am shocked. We've been getting food here for over a year multiple times a week. We were apologetic when the order was an error. I have been going through a difficult time in my life and made an error due to stress as I'm normally meticulously doing things. It was a complete accident. The food is the star at this very plain restaurant space. No windows and no attempt to decorate, but boy do they get high marks for the food and the wait staff. I had driven past this place a million times, and kept saying I needed to go check it out, so I very happy I finally convinced my parents to have dinner with me here. As an FYI they have valet, as there's no street parking outside which is nice. If you don't see a valet guy, just wait a few minutes, he may be parking someone else's car. I'm really surprised some reviewers said that the service wasn't great, I thought the service was outstanding. Immediately upon seating, they handed us menus and asked us if we wanted some drinks. My parents ordered some martinis and I had a glass of Sauv Blanc. On the specials menu it said that house bottles of wine were $25, which is pretty awesome! (My glass of Sauv Blanc was $9). In addition to the great service, I loved how extensive their food menu was. In addition to their regular menu, they have a specials menu and additional specials on top of that, so many options to choose from! We started with their hot antipasto which came with little bits of just about everything on their hot appetizer menu (stuffed mushrooms, stuffed peppers, shrimp and artichoke hearts). Then for dinner we had a grilled shrimp special and a chicken special. My parents were very happy with everything and they're often very difficult to please! The owners mom came and chatted with us for a bit and the wait staff was very hospitable. It's a very cute, neighborhood like spot, that's not too expensive and have an adorable ambiance. Traditional Italian with specials that will blow your mind. My husband and I were taken here years ago by family who have been going here for ages. My first time there I got a 1 pound meatball, it was outragious and as big as my head. My husband got a "peasant style" pork chop. Initially I was thinking that's not at all what you get at an Italian restaurant, I couldn't have been more wrong. His very Italian self got it after reading a ton of reviews about this magical pork chop pounded to perfection. It's easily one of the best meals I've ever eaten and still is. Every time we go we share the pork chop and get another entree, while all the food is absolutely delicious, the pork chop lives on its own planet. I've also had several of their pasta dishes, the veal alexa, and all the tasty apps (baby artichokes are my fav!) all so good! They have a really nice wine selection, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff makes you feel like your home. Oh, did I mention they have valet parking? No stress looking for a spot. The lede: Great food and lots of it! Stopped in on a Saturday evening. We didn't have a reservation, so I'm glad we were on the early side, a few minutes before 6:00, because it filled up fast. They have a nice wine list, not enormously extensive, but balanced and well-chosen. The bread they provide on the table hits that right spot of being substantive while also airy and fresh. Although their available appetizers looked promising, we went straight to entrees. They split a kale Caesar salad for my daughter and son-in-law, which was thoughtful on their part. They enjoyed it a lot. My first indication of the entree size was the lasagna I saw served to a boy of about ten or eleven. It wasn't as big as his head, but it seemed close. Long story short, the three of us who ordered pasta finished maybe up to half of what they served. Not for lack of trying or desire, mind you. It was all fabulous. Bottom line: Great service, pleasant atmosphere, even when the restaurant was full, and wonderful meals. We loved it. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Walking distance...48 years in business. Nice professional staff. Maybe an off night but... The marinara was so acidic (not rancid sour) unbalanced sour that you really couldn't eat it. Just a little sugar or sweet source would've cut the acidity. Also it was way too watery. The veal Parmesan barely had cheese just two paper thin "slices" that looked like they were thrown on and melted by the heat of the acid marinara sauce. They don't substitute a veg for the pasta but would give potatoes so I went with the linguine instead. This was way too firm to be called al dente...same for the pasta (pappardelle?special with shrimp, mushrooms and cream sauce). The linguine was inedible due to being very under cooked and in that watery acidic sauce. Btw the special I mentioned...shrimp, mushrooms in a cream was actually very good except that pasta being way undercooked. I got the baked clams though I shouldn't have. I inquired about it and was told it's not "clams oreganata" but instead was a breadcrumb mixture with chopped clams...why? It had no clam flavor at all and not worth eating but the plated sauce was good. Also the special "baby" artichoke hearts weren't baby but had some breading and Parmesan cheese which was good not great and I'd prefer the full stuffed artichoke which is also on the menu. Staff was nice and professional and the place had the "feel" like you were about to be served great food but sadly weren't. Off night? Maybe? But a bad marinara should never happen in a good place on a bad night. Too many basic mistakes. Not sure if I'd try it again...but it's so close maybe. read more

If you want to be abused, this is the restaurant for you. We've been going to Roberto's 2 for years and years. We have found, as have others, that the owner, Bobby, has become more and more abusive. He yells at you if you want another table or do not have a reservation. Bobby is abusive and very rude!!! We will never go back there and recommend that you go down the road to GP's in Guttenberg where they are thrilled for your patronage and treat you with respect!! It's not about the food! read more

Some of the food was awesome and some just ok (we got the hot antipasto, a special with scallops/shrimp/fettuccini, and the zuppa di pesce). service was great. but what really ticked me off was the over pricing. i asked for a dessert menu and the server just rattled off what was available - the lemoncello cake was recommended which was ok. when we got the bill they charged me $18 for the freaking SLICE of cake - are you kidding me? that's not inflation folks - that's called gauging. i'm taking 2 stars off for that - so not cool. read more

I just can't say enough on how amazing the food is here. We have enjoyed this restaurant since the late 1970's. I made the mistake of moving to Florida in 1990 and I make it a must visit to have dinner here anytime I'm in North Jersey. I happened to be in the area this week and made a point to stop for dinner. Still amazing as ever! Food is fresh, tasty and big portions. My favorites are the stuffed artichokes, ceaser salad and linguini carbonara. Other notable dishes are the zuppa de clams and linguini and white clam sauce. Plus there are always amazing specials. Don't hesitate, stop by and enjoy a great meal with great atmosphere. If you all want Old School Mom and Pop locals Italian this is it! I've tried this restaurant several times while visiting and it is amazing. Step back in time ( place hasn't changed in 50 years) and imagine as if your grand ma was cooking all day in the kitchen just for you.! Well almost, except the owner Roberto will greet you often in his kitchen whites and personally prepare your favorite dish. Doesn't get more real than this. I have been coming here pretty much since I was born. It is one of the last Italian restaurants in the area that has that older Italian restaurant feel to it. I must warn you, if you decide to come here, make a reservation or you will be waiting FOREVER. Valet parking is available, and if that's not your thing then there's a huge parking lot right across the street. The bar area is nice, and the older bartender is a pleasure to talk to. For an appetizer, my new favorite is the stuffed peppers, they are absolutely delicious! Their seafood dishes are also real winners here. The service can be slow, and the crowd is older. However, it's a nice place in the area to go for a nice Italian meal. read more

We came for the Sunset Dinner special (arrive before 6pm) and you can get a 3 course meal for $24. It is worth it since you can try a bit of everything at a great price. This was great for sampling and sharing. We started with the mussels (recommend) the stuffed artichokes (very good) and the mozzarella and tomatoes (really good). Then we had chicken parm, veal parm, and chicken marsala. ALl were great and all come with either linguine or potatoes. Roberto makes a good gravy (sauce). The food plentiful. The taste was good. Truly Italian. I lived the fresh sauce and the onions. This was a great meal and a good neighborhood place. The happy hour specials are worth it to drop in and try them out. Really liked it and would recommend it to anyone. I am going to head back and try the pork chop specials - for which they are known. Also talked to Roberto. I went to this restaurant with friend a while ago and gave it a 5* rating. A friend and I returned & dined there on a weeknight less than 2 weeks ago and I must, again, give it a 5* rating! There are tables adjoining the bar area but we sat in the 'back area' which was very pleasant; it is decorated 'old school' and I like that. There is an area with nice tables for 2 against the wall that seems very nice for couples in a 'romantic' frame of mind. However, I would suggest not to sit there if you are ordering larger amounts of food---WHY?---because the portions served are quite plentiful and your food & drinks may be a bit cramped. My buddy & I sat at a square table for 4 and I am glad that we did! We had drinks, wine, and main courses that were quite large as the servings tend to run from what I have seen! My Beefeater Martini was served as I ordered (very cold) and it was in the largest size true martini glass--(no skimping)! Our food was served hot and was really delicious! What I find interesting is that there is a copious regular menu & a 'special' menu that has more items than most restaurants have on their regular menu! There are, without doubt, more selections than anyone could ask for and it seems that they are all AVAILABLE! I hate ordering something on the menu & being told 'we are out of that'! Regarding the menu & varied/interesting dishes, I personally regard this restaurant as 'Italian-Continental'. The owner/chef, Bobby, tends to come out to the dining room on a reasonably frequent basis--That usually is a good sign that he cares about the customers & what is going on. In any restaurant, no matter how good, there may be legitimate occasions in which the service or the food is not up to par; that sometimes comes 'with the territory'. However, my sincere suggestion is that if you find yourself in this situation, talk to the chef/owner when he comes out of the kitchen (you cannot miss him) and politely & quietly tell him what is disappointing you. Any chef/owner such as Bobby is virtually 'married' to his business and I sincerely believe would want to hear any negatives from customers as well as the compliments. I think that this is the best way to proceed, the issue can be immediately addressed, you will have a nice dining experience, and there will be no need to write a bad review afterward and furthermore deny yourself returning to a place which you otherwise have enjoyed many times in the past. I realize that this review is quite lengthy. I am writing it as much for the patrons as for the establishment. I AM NOT BEING GIVEN ANY RENUMERATION FOR THIS; I have only met Bobby 3 times, twice in his restaurant & once in another restaurant. Among other functions of my previous employment, I entertained professional people in a number of the finest restaurants in NYC and I know what makes for a nice dining experience and one that is disappointing. read more

So after reading all the reviews from this restaurant I decided to give this a go. When we walk in the hostess and bartender was very sweet and welcoming despite everyone awkwardly starring at my date and I. We got seated in the back corner and we got our menus. We engaged in conversation and decided what we wanted to eat but we never got our orders taken. We sat there for about 30 minutes while all their servers were passing our table and serving other people! I had to wave down the hostess just to let her know that we weren't served..not even water! We had ordered an Makers Old Fashion for myself and a wine for the lady and for food we had the Filet Mignon and the NY Strip and took about the 30 minutes for a MR temperature which wasn't bad but it came out as a MW. The sides that came with steaks weren't good. I had sliced up potatoes in a sauce that was very bland but instead of complaining about it I just left it on the table. The strip was lacking flavor. Seems like it wasn't seasoned..not even with salt and pepper. We were talking after dinner and the waiter randomly came over to us and just handed the Check, not asking if we wanted coffee or dessert which we wanted. We felt like we were pressured to pay and leave and it wasn't even that busy in there. So I left the bill on the table and continued to talk. Within 10 minutes, 4 different waiters came to the table to collect the check until I had to step up and ask if we were getting rushed to leave because from what I saw no one was waiting for a table. We finally paid and left and as we were walking out the hostess apologized and then we went on our way! We won't be back, that's for sure! I'm giving this review a star, one for the hostess and bartender. There's room for improvement on the food and flavor. This old school, grandma's cooking, been here forever gem is one of the best restaurants in Edgewater. I had the fettuccine Roberto (hold the peas) and it was fantastic. You can't beat the homemade fettuccine with a delicious creamy sauce with prosciutto and a nice wine flavor. Love the chickpeas they serve with hot bread (in olive oil, herbs, red pepper flakes) and they have a full bar. Moderate prices- $17 for a homemade pasta dish can't be beat. I will def try the pounded pork next time. Valet parking available and good luck with street parking :) read more

We didn't even get to the food bc after being served wine, we sat there waiting for 20min for our server to take our order, it was absurd. What was worse, other than a party that was buffet catered and 1 other table of 2, there was nothing going on in the restaurant. We kept seeing 4 servers milling around tending to the other table while our server was MIA for 20MINUTES! No one thought to check in on us sitting there with no food while we clearly looked around trying to get someone's attention. It was crazy! My wife, two friends and I ate dinner here. We were looking for "old-school" Italian and we found it here. A friend and I had that night's special of Italian sweet sausage and meatballs with spaghetti. I normally would not order this at a restaurant but decided to go with my gut feeling. The meatballs, 3 total, were baseball sized. They were some of the best meatballs that I have ever had. The Italian sweet sausage, 2 large pieces, were very good with just a hint of fennel. The spaghetti noodle was cooked just how I like it, al dente. The best was the tomato sauce/gravy. It was an excellent basic tomato sauce, not sweet and acidy. The portions are large. We had enough food for two meals. The staff was attentive with out intrusive. After dinner, we had a nice chat with some of the staff. (We were some of the final customers that evening.) We gave them positive verbal feedback. My wife was a part owner of a restaurant and we really enjoyed our dinner here, the quality of the food, and the service. We will return here again when we are back in Edgewater. read more
